Our summer series of members’ articles, offering an in-depth team-by-team analysis of the previous campaign, continues with Manchester United.

To get things up and running, we’ll look at the performance levels on a team level and attempt to spot trends or improvements.

We then delve into the player data, analysing the key individuals as we scour for early targets ahead of the new season.

Replacing Louis van Gaal as manager last May, Jose Mourinho could only manage a sixth-place finish in his first year in charge at Old Trafford.

This was, in part, due to the club’s successful march to Europa League success as Mourinho rotated his side towards the latter stages of the league season.

Despite adding big-name buys such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan in attack, the Red Devils netted just 54 times – up five on 2015/16 and only eighth best in the top-flight.

Meanwhile, a total of 69 points was just three more than their haul from Van Gaal’s final year at the helm.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Sorry for the repost, didn't get any reply on previous page...

What's your thoughts on this team :

    Foster Elliot
    Alonso Trippier Francis Dunk Rangel
    Alli Sane Willian Phillips TCarroll
    Kane Lukaku Austin

    * Austin is a place holder for now.
** If Francis is not nailed, I will change the rotation pair to Lowton/Tomkins

    Thanks!

9/10, v similar to mine a few posts below. Maybe a couple of changes you could make in defence to favour early fixtures. I'm thinking maybe Kompany or Chelsea double up..

That would mean more money in defense, which will be too hard find...

How about Dunk and Trippier out for Kompany/Luiz and 4.0? Haven't spurs bought another right back also?

Nice, although it's quite reliant on a 6.5m striker, and we don't know who will start for SOT.

Better options at around 8m IMO, Hernandez will probably be around that price, will be my 3rd striker.

Thanks. Yes, it will all depend on the 3rd striker, if Austin is not nailed, I might go with Gayle

Consider a strike force of Lukaku // 10.5 // Firmino

10.5 + Firminho might well outscore 6.5+ Kane

Assuming you'd captain Kane half the time (looking at the opening fixtures it's plausible):
            It's Kane x 1.5 + 6.5 vs 10.5 and Firmino (x 1.5 on either).

Will Flectcher play? That's why I'm trying to play 3 up front because the are not nailed 4.5 forwards but at least with mids you have a few (RLC, Carrol etc) so I'd be more inclined to play 3 starters IMO. You could downgrade Alonso and upgrade Fletcher?

How many of you are going big up top and how many are opting for the 'usual' 12 / 10 / 6-7 spread? I usually opt for the latter and would have my midfield spending something like: 10 / 8 / 8 / 6 / 4.5, but with the lack of 8m midfielders and the abundance of heave hitters up front I think we may need to revisit the usual spending template and instead invest more up front instead of in midfield? Or does that decrease your flexibility?

I've got Alonso to combat the lack of 6-8.5 milfs.

I like the question. The Liverpool mids are pricey at 9 or over. There are plenty of good strong mids at 7.
I'm not thinking of going big 3 though as I don't think Kane at 12 or Kaku at 11.5 will double the tally of Gayle or J-Rod at 5.5 and 6. Will Kane score 50% more than Firm?
      He's 50% more dosh.
So my thinking is 2 10+ strikers with a 3rd playing

        Fat fingers...
..striker. The key is finding which 2 of the big 5 you have.
Kane, Kaku, Laca, Morata, Costa and which auxiliary you add in the mix. Rooney, Firm, Gayle, J-Rod, Austin etc.

I agree that the chance of Kane or Lukaku scoring twice as much as Gayle is not that high.. But you do need captain choices right? And if you're not going near the Liverpool mids and have a 3rd cheaper striker, where are you spending the money that you save? Are you investing the extra money in defense?

I might be going 1 Pool. Undecided. They are all a big commitment this season unless you like Lallana.
Yes I'm looking at two premium defenders.
          Kompany for one.

Personally I think having 3 big strikers increases your flexibility this season at the moment.

Last season the 5 in midfield was so valuable because it increased flexibility with the in-demand midfielders. This year it's the strikers that are in demand. Having 3 big slots allows you to more easily rotate Kane, Lukaku, Aguero/Jesus, Lacazette and Morata in and out around the fixtures.

I'll certainly be going with 3 big strikers to begin with to benefit from the flexibility here. But if/when any 2 of those strikers stand out as being the better options when the season is 6-8 weeks in, I'll definitely reconsider.

        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

Good point. At which point you downgrade a big striker to auxiliary striker and upgrade mid to a Haz or Mhki or Salah or Mane or Cout.
Sound logic. I might have a rethink. Spreads you bets early on.
For what it's worth I'm going kaku, Aguero and Firm.
        But I still have a hunch for J-Rod being a bargain 3rd.

Exactly, by that time you'll know which midfielder you want too. I'm currently on Lukaku, Aguero and Lacazette, but will be dropping one of them for Kane in week 3 for sure.

My team hasn't changed since Thursday night now so I'm pretty set on it, though all this talk of Lindelof and Cedric not being nailed to start the season has got me a little concerned.

It's in pencil atm because I'm waiting for signings and pricings.

      But roughly this:

      Trippier - Cedric - Riedewald - Mee - ?Rosenior?

Hopefully Riedewald comes in at 4.5m, because I think he'll start for Palace, and they rotate beautifully with Burnley for the first few weeks.

4.0m slot is still a mystery. We'll be able to make a better guess at who is most likely to start nearer the time.

West Brom look weak this season, I'm staying clear unless they make some good defensive signings.

Currently got Begovic & Elliot. Not usually fussed about fixtures in goal. The tougher the fixtures, the more save pts, and the more chance of a mega haul against a big team.

I believe that people are misreading the situation at Palace. Badly. They have a talented, and experienced, squad. But, they have had two abysmal managers in succession. I think de Boer will be pleasantly surprised by what he finds.

As to newcomers, that is going to be one tough dressing room.

What do you think of this 4-3-3 team? Based on good fixtures for the defense/GK at least for the first 10 gw.

    Foster/Fabianski
Valencia - Trippier - Bertrand - Dawson (Lowton)
Willian - Chadli - Tadic (Carroll - McArthur)
    Kane - Lukaku - Aguero

Was considering going 3-4-3 with Austin, but not sure he will start. If Aguero is a bit sketchy I might downgrade 1 fwd and upgrade 1 mid to a premium one.

Could work. Personally I'd go go Aguero to Chicha and upgrade midfield. Guessing Chicha will be 7.5m to 8m.

in percentages, what is the likelihood of the following players to be starting every week:

Lindelof most likely of those. So far in pre-season, De Boer seems to be favouring Schlupp over PVA. One to keep an eye on though. Fabregas will only start if Bakayoko not fit for week 1 and Austin is up in the air I think right now so again keep an eye on this.

    A. Lindelof, Zaha & Lacazette
    B. Dunk, Phillips & Kane
    C. Another combo up to 23.0 (please suggest)

I think A is maybe stronger overall but I'd be very concerned about not having Kane.

The rest of my squad is:

    Foster, Begovic
    Bellerin, Trippier, Cedric, Lascelles
    Alli, Coutinho, RLC, Carroll
    Lukaku, Defoe
