Next up in our summer series of members’ articles, offering in-depth team-by-team analysis are Southampton. A side that carry extra significance ahead of the new campaign given their exceptionally kind early fixtures.

To get underway, we’ll analyse performance at a team level and attempt to spot trends or improvements. We then delve into the player data, analysing the key individuals as we scour for potential targets ahead of next month’s Gameweek 1 deadline.

In addition, we’ll also focus on any specific periods of interest brought about by tactical changes or breakout Fantasy performances – in this case we’ll focus on the Saints’ home/away displays, investigating a trend that saw them score just 17 goals in front of their own supporters.

Southampton finished in sixth spot under Ronald Koeman back in 2015/16 – a total of 63 points was just three points behind Manchester City in fourth. But the Dutchman’s decision to move to Everton proved detrimental to their prospects, with replacement Claude Puel struggling to maintain those standards.

Despite claiming eight place, Southampton bagged just 46 points and found the net on 41 occasions – a tally that bettered only the bottom five and well behind the 59 strikes under Koeman.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

I really think King is being overlooked. I know he's a forward. I know he's going to play as a second striker to Defoe. I know he's probably not on pens.

But it was such fun owning him last season, he's only going to improve, Bournemouth will be an improved unit this season with Ake and they never had any trouble banging in goals.

Reckon he could match his output last year.

      Otherwise Defoe.

How does this team look. Midfield possibly too weak but thinking of Alonso as midfielder. Annoying Ince v Zaha first game but think both worth having.

Let's be honest to ourselves, we can pick a team that looks lovely on paper for the season but most of us will wildcard by end of September (Gameweek 7).

For that reason why not just pick your team as a combination of the must haves i.e. Kane & the ones with the best fixtures i.e. Cedric.

I think the best teams with the best fixtures are the following:

    Man City
    Man Utd
    Southampton

For that reason is it not best to pick 2-3 players from each team then fill the gaps.

    My current shortlist:

Man City - Otamendi (good value), De Bruyne/Sane/Sterling, Aguero/Jesus
Man Utd - De Gea, Valencia, Lukaku
    Southampton - Bertrand, Cedric, Austin

Are there any other teams who's fixtures are really strong at the start?

Crystal Palace, Newcastle, Huddersfield, West Brom but I don't really fancy any of them much apart from maybe looking at Zaha, Matt Ritchie if fit & Foster or a West Brom defender.

Then after that it's filling the gaps & my essential players are currently Alonso, Willian & Kane.

This all with a bench of Myhill, Rangel & Carroll/RLC works out quite nicely.

Trying to find alternatives to their template equivalents (in brackets). Is anyone able to share any insights on the players below?

Simon Francis (Daniels): Those picking him seem sure he'll play at RB - isn't Adam Smith a serious rival for his place?

Ben Watson (RLC/Carroll): Seen comments that Silva likes him and that he's on some set pieces. I fancy Watford to do fairly well this season. Nailed?

Markus Suttner (Dunk): Heard he's on set pieces. Likely source of assists?

He is. I'm just saying he's an alternative to a fellow Bournemouth defender.

If assuming Daniels at LB, that leaves Cook and Ake CB, and then Francis/Smith at RB. Those picking Francis seem convinced he's nailed... I just don't know if that's true!

They are both reasonable punts at their price points, but if funds are needed elsewhere, they can go.

Watch out for Gayle's high ownership, though. He could drop heavily in price if he blanks and Austin/Chicharito/Rooney start well.

    Foster | Fabiansky
    Alonso | Ceric | Cresswell | Suttner | Martina/Holgate
    KDB | Eriksen | Coutinho | Mkhitaryan | Carroll
    Lacazette | Chicarito | Austin

Well it seems you at least find it interesting. I inferred that you may have been surprised, so I asked to confirm one way or the other! 🙂

I saw your friends, the Kaiser Chiefs, recently in Bruges. They said, "look at the moon! It's so bright. We don't need the lights. Now everybody get out your phones!"

And everyone turn on their phone torches and waved them about.

Could you explain this behaviour to me please? Much obliged.

A few burning questions on my mind.

    What position does Kolasinac play?

Has Phillips been starting pre season?

Kola plays either wing back or in back three. Phillips have been playing and been quite good.

I'm surprised if Spurs are interested - don't see he is anywhere near as good as what they already have got.
