Mark Hughes’ Stoke City are the next team to come under the microscope in our series of pre-season analysis articles for members.

We start by assessing the performance levels at the team level to look for any trends of improvement, before checking out their standout individuals ahead of the 2017/18 season. This includes an in-depth look at their likely key attacking target for the new campaign – Joe Allen.

Although they mirrored a total of 41 goals from the 2015/16 campaign last time out, Hughes’ men were hardly prolific – only the bottom five sides found the net on fewer occasions.

The Potters’ fell from ninth spot to thirteenth over the two seasons, though as the underlying numbers highlight, their threat inside the box was on the rise.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    Bottomed. Can you name a

    A) 6.5 mid who will outscore Kolasinac at LWB

    B) 6.0 mid who will outscore Bertrand

    C) 5.5 mid who will outscore Cedric

...Over the first 8 GWs or so. Or will these defs outscore the mids?

Do you expect Redmond/Tadic to outscore Kolasinac over the first 8 GWs or the whole season?

    3. 6thGoal
      • 8 Years
      8 years, 4 months ago

      A) Tadic if he lives up to his underlying stats.

      B) Ince potentially, like how he is lining up for HUD and while I don't put much into preseason hype, he's played well. Capoue, depending on how he gets off to start the season. Shaqiri is another I think could better his numbers from last year as well.

      C) Capoue, Allen, Puncheon possibly.

Now ask me who I start, I will learn towards the defenders, but I do plan on a potential 6.0 midfielder rotation, which I think can work based on HOME fixtures.

I could also see a Southampton option outscoring Kolasinac potentially, given the fixtures. But I'm not sure about the long term.

There is clearly alot of worth in having defenders this season, whereas alot of the best midfielders are higher priced.

Personally, I think 4-3-3, 4-4-2, or even, 5-3-2 make sense

The caveat is that is assuming Kolasinac plays LWB

The other caveat is that there surely will be exceptions in each of those positions when the points start to roll, but that's my best guess before the fact 😉

Which ones? I can't have Tadic and I have Redmond already.

I can't afford to swap one player several times in 8 weeks, given injuries and other priorities. Not sure how many FTs you get

First attempt at the draft league game.
My general tactic is to get atleast 2 decent strikers and 1 premium mid, then try and max out defenders and take whatever is left. Is the tactic generally a good one, and how good was my attempt? I was 8th btw....

Draft league so no money (this team actually costs over 100m)
And keep for the season so I thought over the whole year, hazard is still a premium pick?

And 100% I want Benteke as long as can get him 3rd round. Look at his history, incredibly consistent even at Liverpool, relatively injury free and no competition at palace.

Also 8th in an 8 - mine is Ederson, one gk left to pick,
      Milner, Cahill, Kolasinac, Trippier, Lindelof
Alli, Bernardo Silva, Lanzini, Ramsey, Philips
      Lacazette, King and Austin

I really lost out in terms of premium attackers.

        Laca and Alli ain't bad!
They both went top 6 in my draft!
For real, I'd be too concerned about gametime for Milner, Cahill and Lindelof. What do you think for those 3 over the whole season?
You did amazing to get Philips last mid and Austin last forward!

Im confident in Lindelof - I think he was brought to play next to Bailly, and Mourinho has been experimenting with other selections in preparation for Bailly's absence in the UCL games because of suspension, and because of the need to prepare ahead of potential injuries down the line.

I expect Milner to start most games but not all - it's that attacking threat that encourages me. He would have been the top scoring defender in the game if he had been classified as a defender last year..although he will invariably be rested on occasions.

Cahill is a weird one. I'm not sure what is going to happen. I think he will be a sure starter, and I think Luiz will continue too. At present, I think it's Rudiger vs Cesar and Cesar vs Moses. That said, Rudiger is athletic and powerful and Cahill is less athletic..maybe he is at risk. It's hard to say.

            Cheers for your full opinion.
I really want Milner but I know I will have to draft early and that is a big gamble if he isn't nailed, people are saying though, if Klopp wanted to replace him, he would have gone much bigger than 10m worth Robertson, what do you think?
Also, I'd love Lindelof to be nailed cos I can draft him later on, but once again, a gamble cos I feel I absolutely need a United defender, I guess Bailly might not go too soon though.
And as for Cahill, I'm not convinced. If Alonso is nailed then I'd happily draft him 3rd pick but with all the talk of sandro...does conte trust him?

My first 3 picks were all strikers, figured with 10 teams that's 33 strikers to be picked from the pool so if I left it late I could end up with an average 2nd striker & a non starter. Missed out on a premium mid and defender though unfortunately.

Looking at fixtures over first 10 GWs has completely turned me off Chelsea defenders. Also highlights some strong rotation pairing options which to me suggests you only require 2 premium/mid value defenders.

Home fixtures avoiding big 7 for1st 10 GWs.
    5 = Arsenal (1,4,6,7,10) + Burnley (2,4,6,8,10)
    4 = C Palace (1,3,5,10) + Southampton (1,4,8,9) + Swansea (4,6,8,9) + West Brom (1,3,5,7) + West Ham = (2,4,7,9)
    3 = Bournemouth (2,5,7) + Brighton (4,6,10) + Everton (1,6,7) + Huddersfield (2,3,5) + Leicester (2,8,10) + Liverpool (2,5,10) + Man City (6,8,9) + Man Utd (1,3,7) + Newcastle (3,5,9) + Tottenham (3,5,8)
    2 = Chelsea (1,9) + Stoke (7,9) + Watford (3,10)

Not that anyone would rotate out Arsenal defenders but rotation with either Huddersfield or Newcastle gives you 8 home fixtures against 'easy' teams. With Newcastle favourable as GW2 would be away to either Stoke or Huds.

I suspect Rashford MIGHT play up front with Lukaku, but I want cover in MF just in case he doesn't.

Anyone bold enough to use 4.5 player as their 4th mid?

I think Carroll is not far off. RLC?

1 mil more opens you realistic possibilites for few starting weeks. consider it.

Have £10.5m for two defenders, both of whom I will need to play regularly for the first five weeks or so. Thinking Cedric and:

    a) Bertrand
    b) Tripper

        He's £6.0 and I'm not sure I'd like having a £4.5m defender play every week in a 3-4-3

Starting to get pretty happy with my team. My concerns are mostly defence, David Luiz and Soares, better combos for 11m?

    Foster
    Luiz Trippier Cedric
    KDB Coutinho Zaha Redmond
    Lukaku Kane Rodriguez

    Elliot Carroll Rangel Hünemeier

It's a good team. I like the approach of going with 3 4millers to squeeze as many funds into the first 11. The worry obviously is if a defender gets injured then you might not have anyone to come in. Make sure Cedric is good to go or else pick a nailed 5m such as Dawson.

Had my first draft experience. I was unfortunately 8th of 8th - I think going first or second is going to give a considerable advantage.

    Ended up with this:

    Ederson, Heart
    Milner, Cahill, Kolasinac, Trippier, Lindelof
Alli, Bernardo Silva, Lanzini, Ramsey, Philips
    Lacazette, King and Austin

I lost out in terms of premium attackers - what is clear, is that great defensive choices are left over later in the draft, as the previews etc have suggested. I made an error going for Austin a little too early - some good strikers were picked quite late too (Rooney for example)

Same I also ended up with the 8th pick resulting in all of the premium strikers been picked before me so I ended up with King - Benteke - J Rod as my front 3

It's frustrating isn't it? I got lucky, I suppose then, with Laca being left over.

I'm inclined to say that a league of 6 might be the best

          • 10 Years

Exactly. I want to see a front 3 of Sané Kun Jesus with KDB in a free role behind. Silva/Silva alongside him with a holding mid (gundogan?). Sterling a pacey option to bring on late on.
What you think? Is it possible?

I see Coutinho + Mane as nice picks but you can't really compare them with a defender

Matip was a real threat at goal last season, though he only scored 1 goal. He could also turn into a BAP beast and I think Liverpool will be more solid at the back this season
