Mark Hughes’ Stoke City are the next team to come under the microscope in our series of pre-season analysis articles for members.

We start by assessing the performance levels at the team level to look for any trends of improvement, before checking out their standout individuals ahead of the 2017/18 season. This includes an in-depth look at their likely key attacking target for the new campaign – Joe Allen.

Although they mirrored a total of 41 goals from the 2015/16 campaign last time out, Hughes’ men were hardly prolific – only the bottom five sides found the net on fewer occasions.

The Potters’ fell from ninth spot to thirteenth over the two seasons, though as the underlying numbers highlight, their threat inside the box was on the rise.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

      Very nice.

I'm not sure about J Rod in a WBA team not known for their attacking prowess... but could be great.

Hunemeier and Rangel are just bench fodder but it would be nice to have one of those as a 4.5

Yacob will be my third sub so I don't want to upgrade him.

Plus Alli I think is a better and more settled pick than Coutinho.

CLQ also puts me off Pool players.

So here's the thing about 4-3-3 or 4-5-2. It's not just that you want your 1st Defender to score like a midfielder, it's that he has to do that, while the rest of your defence, 234, tries to score like a normal defence. This renders 4-5-2 unaffordable, in my view, and I have to confess, that I, at least, have been unable to solve 4-3-3 - to my satisfaction, anyway.

For people who have a budget of 5 - 5.5 for their 4th mid it might just be better to go with defenders like Trippier, Bertrand, Youshida, Cedric, Dawson etc who have good short term fixtures and can outscore these mids.

Is McArthur nailed? I like his stats, but I look at that Palace midfield and don't see where he fits. Cabaye and Mili are probably nailed and it seems like RLC and Puncheon are competing for the 10.

I think this is the season for it, because of some very well valued defenders.

Defenders, at 5.0-6.0, who can return 125-140 points, look fantastic value, especially as it enables the more powerful midfielders/strikers which seem a necessity, especially in the early season, because of a lack in the lower ranges.

There's also the issue of bandwagons and creating value. The milf is more likely to do that over a 4th defender.

If you go 4 at the back, 2 of the four need to be premium in my view, 5.5 and 6.0+. It will also require a lot of patience since you are not likely to be getting hauls on a weekly basis and people don't like making defensive transfers to jump from one premium defender to another. A mid-priced mid transfer every other week is still easier to make since it is inherently an attack minded transfer.

I can't understand why people are obsessed with formation.

A team at the start of the season consists of £100m divided by 15 players who are all priced depending on FPL's guess at what their potential points score will be by the end of 38 gameweeks.
We then take in to account the special conditions:
      * Captaincy - this means you need at least one very high points scorer even though they are often worse value for money.
      * Allowable formations - don't pick two good keepers as you can only play one, remember you can only play 7 of your front 8.
      * Fixtures/Form - allowing weekly transfers means you can try to get players with short term prospects which outweigh their valuation.

As long as the conditions for an allowable formation are followed it makes no difference with you play 352 or 523. You just fit in the players who you believe have the highest points potential vs their valuation.

OK, fair enough. Personally, I don't agree with much of that. I have 4 possible captains. I rotate my keepers.

But, I do agree with following the fixtures.

I will be playing 3-5-2, until team value, or inspiration, allows me to go 3-4-3.

      Leading question. He couldn't.

Ask him "Which English players could play for Barcelona?" and Barkley wouldn't be on the list.

Is it fair that defenders and keepers get the short end in FPL?

They lose tons of points through teammate errors e.g. penalties against, keeper or defenders mistakes leading to goals conceded.

I think they should automatically start a game with 6 points and get deducted a point for every goal the team concedes.

      Downgrade Vardy and upgrade Ince.

2 x 4m defs on the bench is not ideal.

Yeah - I think Vardy is a great pick...in a few weeks. But his start is horrible and it's costing you elsewhere.

I'd downgrade Vardy, upgrade Ince, and perhaps downgrade Bertrand to a 5.0 Southampton defender (Yoshida or Soares) to give you more elsewhere.

      Cheers guys.

Yeah ramsey can be swapped in for zaha / willian if they fail.

I actually had lacazette in for ages, then saw man city and jesus play against real and they look too good to ignore.

Jesus's PPM from last year is incredible and I think Man city as a team will be much better this year, and Jesus will benefit.

Can easily change to lacazette if one of the striker's fail.

I'd prefer your original team tbh, which is very well balanced. Stan probably wont make the start and is a rotation doubt, whereas Willian will play the first few.

I think Alonso could be a must have later in the season, but Chelsea's concluding defensive performances, Alonso's price, and their tough opening fixtures lessen his early appeal imo.

It's good, and I think the KDB, Coutinho, and Lukaku picks are crucial. The lack of Spurs is a bit worrying though, as I think Kane is the best player in the game and Alli and Erik undervalued by 0.5.

Gayle could be great - I had him before but I'm little worried about Mitrovic occasionally displacing him. It's a punt with a potentially huge pay off though.

I'm not sure about Redmond - again, he could be good, but he, like Gayle and Laca is a risk. I think he flatters to deceive a little.

The defence is sound, but I wonder if you are missing a trick by leaving out Trippier? You could downgrade a 4.5 defender to a 4.0 and accommodate him. Or else, drop Bertrand for Yoshida or Cedric. I'd prefer Trippier, with Spurs defensive strength and his attacking potential, to Palace options.

        Thanks for the feedback!

I am a Spurs fan so let me explain my reasoning.

I'm planning a WC in the International break so only really concerned about first 3 weeks.

Newcastle away is a potential banana skin and Spurs don't often start well. Can't see us getting much there.

Then Chelsea at 'home' (Wembley), can't see much there,

Might bring in one Spurs for GW3 but it doesnt fill me with optimism.

Loads of people doubling up on Southampton defence, I'm not feeling it. Otherwise good.

Same as you. I usually hate short term investments... but Willian and Fabregas are really 9m+ mids in disguise when in the team. I can't refuse Willian at that price, nailed in my team at the moment. I'm not convinced on Fabregas' game time so he's not near my team at the moment. Zaha is my second favourite 7m mid.
