Mark Hughes’ Stoke City are the next team to come under the microscope in our series of pre-season analysis articles for members.

We start by assessing the performance levels at the team level to look for any trends of improvement, before checking out their standout individuals ahead of the 2017/18 season. This includes an in-depth look at their likely key attacking target for the new campaign – Joe Allen.

Although they mirrored a total of 41 goals from the 2015/16 campaign last time out, Hughes’ men were hardly prolific – only the bottom five sides found the net on fewer occasions.

The Potters’ fell from ninth spot to thirteenth over the two seasons, though as the underlying numbers highlight, their threat inside the box was on the rise.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Yeah, looked to be playing in number 10 role in European qualifier, he didn't get much of a mention but I thought he looked class. Position would be at threat if they sign Siggy, but I think he'll stay somewhere up front.

What are people's opinions on bench fodder? How crucial is it that you have a whole bench to rotate with your squad or is it better to put full value into a nailed XI that you wouldn't replace anyway?

As long as you have at least 1 playing player on your bench imo

Value in starting 11, with enough fodder that will actually come on and get 2/3 points if needed. Essential to have playing bench if you've questionable starters in first 11. Really annoying to have a high scoring bench.

I'm going to concentrate on 11 nailed on players, and go for ultra cheap on the bench. I don't care about missing out on the odd 2/3 points.

Unexpected things happen all the time.
I support the logic of having at least 1 reliable player on your bench.
If you don't, you'll either have to take a hit, or have player(s) with 0 points in your starting 11 at the end of the GW.

I like a 4.5m defender to rotate for hard fixtures. After that I usually go 4m, 4m and 4.5m

It's not a good idea to have players that are not starting, even if they are 4.0. They will drop in value and be difficult to get out of your team without sacrificing others

I think that's true, but for the first 2-3 months last year my bench was maybe only used 1 or 2 times - every week I had 5-20 points on the bench.

Early on in the season, not much as you don't need points off the bench so much. But as the season progresses and injuries, suspensions and rotation mount up you absolutely need a playing bench.

I think this is spot on: I'm going to go bench-less at first, then bring in a couple of bench players at the wildcard when it becomes more clear which cheap players are getting games.

For me 4.0 keeper is a cert. Last season, Pickford, Grant and Jakupovic all emerged at 4.0. Elliot looks likely this year and hopefully another one emerges.

4.0 fifth defender too. I'll have two well priced defenders from good defences (Trippier + Monreal maybe) who I'll play every week plus a 5.0 and a 4.5 stand in.

      Fifth mid also a 4.5.

Really bothers me having a bench with Fletcher, Hunemeier, etc. one good thing with playing three mids is that you can have two playing 4.5's on the bench.

My bench is Elliot, Daniels, Carroll, and Loftus-Cheek. First three will probably rise in value, not sure about the fourth yet

for god sake I had a really nice looking team and ten decided to down grade Austin to a player who probably wont touch ball up front to fit in Coutinho..

So basically I upgraded Redmond to Coutinho and down graded Austin to Quaner but now I cant really rotate that much over the first few weeks and team looks like this..

Can someone or all tell me if this is stupid?

team now looks like this.. Is this stupid ??

    Foster / Elliot

    Mee / Ake / Cedric / Trippier

Alli / Coutinho / De Bruyne / Willian

    Aguero / Lukaku

    Rangel / Quaner / RLC

No guarantees Austin will start, so maybe not as bad as you think.

The problem for you is that you can't transfer out Quanier for a replacement striker without taking a hit, should you want to go to 3 strikers.

The problem with this is it's like bib theory.

Only Pellegrino knows what his starting 11 is going to be against Swansea and it doesn't necessarily follow that who he starts in practice matches is going to be the week one starter.

Austin should be leading the line, but I'm not the manager so I can't make that decision.

Saints fan forums reckon he'll be their first choice striker. He's in all of their lineups.

Also worth noting that they think Gabbi will play on the wing (with Redmond on the other). He has played there in his Serie A career several times and he also played there when he came on in the friendlies (Gallagher replaced Austin upfront).

      It's looking good 🙂

Depends how often you intend to play them.

If you pay £6m for Ince then you want to be starting him every week. If you pay £5m for Milo then it's easier to bench him when he has pants fixtures.

Ritchie disappointed at Bournemouth last time out. I'm wary of him for that reason.

Strangely, of the 3 promoted teams I find myself liking Newcastle's options less.I think I just can't quite make out whether Rafa built a team of players who were too good for the Championship but actually not quite good enough to stay in the Prem, or if they are actually best equipped off the 3 promoted teams to stay up.

Sometimes it's teams like Huddersfield and Brighton that actually come up and do well because they know their limitations and work as a unit and listen to their manager.

One of Newcastle's main problems last time was too many players who thought they were too good to go down. I wonder if they still have some of that mentality?

I think our main issues in 15/16 have pretty much gone now. Sissoko turned up for about 4 games in 38, Wijnaldum went missing away from home, and all of our hopes were pinned on a 21 year old kid who was new to the league in Mitrovic. McClaren didn't help matters, for example deciding to play Aarons at LB against Chelsea.

I think a large part of why we didn't perform as well as people expected in the Championship was due to Benitez setting us up how I expect us to set up this year, so that we got used to the system. It's a very counter attacking set up, and you can't really counter attack against a parked bus.

I would say ince, he's been the most prolific goalscorer over his career. Could get 10 goals this season imo

I wonder the same including Milivojevic as an option
For the moment I am going for Ince.

Yeah he's pretty nailed on right?
I may go Ritchie or Ince 4th mid then Milijevic or Carroll 5th. What you think?

        1. beetlejuice

I ve Ince as 4th and Caroll as 5th mid in 3-4-3.
I think I ll keep Caroll and see about Ince..

Is Carroll only worth it cos of the price or does he actually have the prospect of getting attacking returns?

Those with Trippier and Alonso, what is your plan GW2? Hope for attacking returns, or a 0-0?

Attacking returns. Clean sheets are a bonus, especially for Alonso.

Lest we forget Ake's meteoric eight games for Bournemouth between GWs 12 & 20 last season. Sixteen appearance points, eighteen goals scored points, twelve clean sheet points, seven or eight bonus points(??) minus five goals conceded points made him a 6.1 ppg defender during that period. Bournemouth's fixtures are a little mixed at the start of the season but so were they during that eight game period.

I don't see him in an awful lot of RMTs but surely 0.5m is well worth spending to upgrade from a donkey to a potential Top 10 defender?

I agree he's a good prospect but I think 8 games is a small sample size. Was the purple patch a one off? A lot of people have Daniels instead as he's been reliable for attacking points but Ake could outscore him as a differential.

Daniels has proven more reliable over a longer time period.

Problem is if you're going to buy into their defence it's hard to look past Daniels.

Dawson or Daniels? I think normally Daniels makes more sense but Dawson's fixtures.......

Dawson, but I prefer Foster and Daniels than Bego and Dawson

I'm on Dawson. Think he has the potential to score more than the 4 goals a season he's been getting. If you look at his record for Rochdale and England under 21's he was prolific, albeit at a lower level.

Thoughts on Bellerin on here? I reckon he's perfectly suited for the wing back role. Kolasinac doesn't seem so great going forward from game's i've seen and statistically.

There's better value for 5.5 than Monreal, attacking threat non existent at lcb.

He has looked good in pre-season but I wouldn't buy him until United sign a CDM, then he'll effectively bomb on. He's as nailed as you can get as well obviously

        This.

I'm willing to bet that he's going to be everyone's 4th mid by Xmas too.

If Siggy goes, which looks to be the case, then he's going to be Swansea's main man.
