Mark Hughes’ Stoke City are the next team to come under the microscope in our series of pre-season analysis articles for members.

We start by assessing the performance levels at the team level to look for any trends of improvement, before checking out their standout individuals ahead of the 2017/18 season. This includes an in-depth look at their likely key attacking target for the new campaign – Joe Allen.

Although they mirrored a total of 41 goals from the 2015/16 campaign last time out, Hughes’ men were hardly prolific – only the bottom five sides found the net on fewer occasions.

The Potters’ fell from ninth spot to thirteenth over the two seasons, though as the underlying numbers highlight, their threat inside the box was on the rise.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    Liverpool fixtures in August:
    12.08: Watford (A)
    15.08/16.08: CL Qualification, 1st leg
    19.09: Crystal Palace (H)
    22.08/23.08: CL Qualification, 2nd leg
    27.08: Arsenal (H)

Any thoughts on which players that might be extra prone to rotation in this period?

I fear Liverpool won't get a great result on the 1st leg, which will force them to care more about the 2nd leg, and, inevitably, rotate their good players in PL.

    -----------------Ederson------------------
    Walker-Kompany-Otamendi-Mendy
    ----------------Gündogan---------------
    ------De Bruyne-------Bernardo----
    Jesus-----------Agüero-----------Sané

Bench: Bravo, Stones, Danilo, Fernandinho, Yaya, Silva, Sterling

I've said this will be the City lineup when all are fit, based on who Pep likes and what succeeded last season. The only real question for me is whether or not Silva plays, that's what would turn this all around and put Agüero and Jesus at risk. But Pep and Bernardo have suggested that he will play CM.

Indeed I am not disputing that could be the team. I think you could be right. It's just with Mendy and walker making it into midfield too the defence in my opinion is going to be exposed especially on the counter

It doesn't really as KDB has a good defensive work rate and gundogan played DM for his whole career at Dortmund.

Mendy is injured and so is gundogan so Danilo and Fernandinho/yaya will take their place for first couple of weeks. Also I think stones or a new cb will take otamendis place. I think Bernardo silva and David silva will share minutes as well. Also, I've got a feeling Sterling will share minutes with sane and maybe Aguero in case Pep wants to go with 1 striker.

Don't think Sane can play wing back. He's very much like an inside forward than a natural winger, having a knack for goal. Sterling or Navas who are natural winger s would be better wing backs, even tho Navas has left. IMO, this is where Sane is not nailed in this formation.

This is right as well. Pep will hardly play this formation but Sane still is not nailed as I can see him coming off in the second half for Sterling/Bernardo/David silva and losing minutes to them.

Gündogan didn't play in that role at all last season. What makes you think he'll do it this season? He's an option to David Silva/KdB.

Also there is no chance that Bernardo Silva will knock David Silva out of the midfield.

      1. ★Kuntheman★

He was bought as a replacement for Silva. I think it's very likely that they will share minutes.

Gundogan played as a deeper CM in every game. I think he'll make the transition to CDM. I'd rather Fernandinho, remember this team is made by Pep's comments and biases.

What is the point of this? It's like asking what the weather will be without specifying when. 😕

I did some research early last season about Guardiola and he really is wedded to the idea of rotation. At Bayern even players like Müller, Robben and Lewandowski were benched intermittently. Guardiola in November 2015: "for harmony, fitness and mind, rotation is the best solution. I like it when all of the players are getting a game." This was after 97 games where he hadn't named the same team twice in succession.

"Sometimes you were playing, sometimes you were on the bench and sometimes you were just left at home. That was a new situation for all of us. Personally, I need to be playing games." That was Franck Ribery in 2014.

Guardiola did the same at Barça too. In 2011-12 he picked 25 different lineups in the first 25 games of the season, benching players like Puyol, Piqué, Villa, Fabregas and even Messi. "There’s a pressure from the press and the fans of having to pick certain players. Every time I left Messi on the bench, for example, there was a fuss". That was Guardiola looking back on his time at Barça in 2014.

And that, combined with Pep's disposition to want to change the game of traditional strikers (like Aguero) was what caused me to drop Aguero quite early last season. There was much derision at the time but I was proven right.

OK, that's the history. Here's last season's data...

      >City made 115 changes last season in the PL, over 3 changes per game on average. Only United made more and they had a much more demanding schedule to reach (and win) the EL Final (17 games, that's almost half a PL season) as well as winning the League Cup. (thestatszone.com)

      >As of April 2017, City had never once named an unchanged team. As far as I know that continued all season. (talksport.com)

      >Reportedly even the new fullbacks have been told they will be rotated this season. (thesun.co.uk)

      >To take one example, KDB was available for 37 of 38 PL games last season. He started 33 (89%) and was on the bench for the other 4. Of the 33 games he started he was subbed off in 11. So even KDB isn't immune from rotation.

In that context, saying "this will be the City lineup when all are fit" is a nonsense. Not only will they not have a settled team, they probably won't even have a settled formation. And the team given in the OP would be wrong anyway. If there's one player less likely to be rotated than others it's probably Fernandinho. But the bottom line is that you have to be prepared for unexpected and random benchings if you pick City players.

Whether the upside outweighs the downside is a judgement call.

Agree with Ruth. They will face rotation but I think we need to accept that and weigh it into our decisions. Perhaps there will be less rotation up until Champion league starts. Personally I will start with De Bruyne and just accept he will not start 1 in 10

        1. Ruth_NZ
          • 10 Years

Yeah, it's like the Arsenal midfield a few seasons back - easier to pick for FPL when injuries reduce the options. With Gündoğan and Silva doubtful for the start of the season it may be safer to pick City players initially.

Personally KDB is a borderline decision for me but if the deadline was tonight he'd probably be in my team. Jesus and KDB are the only City players I'm considering initially. Although the defenders may be better value this season too if the new GK does well.

And Kompany stays fit. He if plays he is a great pick. Gets alot of goals although City attackers often take the bonus, well from my experience owning him. That may be just bias talk. I agree with Jesus over Aguero. Think he will play if the formation only has one striker and he can play on the wing too. But im going Kane and Lukaku so cant fit in Jesus

Pep named an unchanged team twice last season. Both near the end in April/May

It was the first time he'd done that in his managerial career.

But... he played the same team for 4 of the last 6 games of the season so...

“Everybody will play, I’m a guy who makes a lot of rotation during the season, not a fixed 11.”

I agree but we have to run a few possible line-ups to see who 'probably' plays the most. There will be a formation of 11 that are picked more than others, there will be core players that are picked more than others, so having a go at thinking it all through is the only thing we can do.

If there is no point in doing this, there is no point to playing the game

RMT guys tinkered with it last few days. Let's see what you think:

    Foster (4m)
    Otamendi Cedric Alonso (4.5m, 4m)
    Sane Willian Cout Lingard (4.5m)
    Aguero(c) Kaku Rooney

Rooney out after last night for me. Lingard a big rotation risk and Otamendi won't keep clean sheets. Sane also not nailed.

I think it's safe to say that having only Sane is not the greatest route into city's attack as it seems that KDB,Jesus, Kun are more explosive and play more essential roles to the team. They also look more nailed with Sane sharing minutes with Sterling and maybe Bernardo in the second half of most games. You can have Sane and one of the other three but not only Sane, he just isn't explosive or nailed enough.

They won't play 3 at the back , pep was just experimenting, I also think Walker is pretty much nailed as Danilo will be playing lb while mendy is injured for the first 3 weeks. I don't see Walker being dropped for Danilo at all if he plays well.

I think you'll see a lot of teams playing 3-5-2 this season especially when the bigger sides come up against each other. Also in light of his recent strengthening I actually do think they'll go 3-5-2

    4.5, 4.5

4.5, 4.5, 4.5, 4.5, 4.5 (two rotating pAirs and another 4.5 with decent enough fixtures such as Hegazi if he's nailed).
