Newcastle United completed their fifth summer signing with the addition of Borussia Dortmund midfielder Mikel Merino on a season-long loan.

The Spanish U21 international struggled for pitch-time after joining the German giants last summer, but Magpies boss Rafa Benitez believes Merino can thrive under his guidance over the coming campaign:

“Mikel is a midfielder with talent, an under-21 international for Spain. He’s a good size, has quality on the ball and he’s very, very focused and professional. Hopefully, he’s the kind of player we can improve a lot – he certainly has the mentality to get better and better. He has to show what he has, and hopefully, he can enjoy playing here for a long time.â€

The History

Merino began his youth career at Osasuna and made his debut for the reserve side during the 2013/14 season.

He broke into the first-team squad the following campaign, making 29 appearances and registering one goal and four assists in the Spanish second tier.

The midfielder enjoyed another strong season in 2015/16, producing seven goals and one assist in 38 league outings, as Osasuna gained promotion to La Liga via the play-offs.

Merino then signed a five-year deal with Dortmund, but featured in just eight league matches last term, making only two starts.

The 21-year-old has represented Spain at both U19 and U21 levels, scoring two goals in 19 matches, and was part of the squad that finished as runners-up in this summer’s UEFA U21 Championship.

The Prospects

While both of Merino’s starts for Dortmund came at centre-back, the Spaniard is predominantly a midfield player, capable of operating either as a deep-lying playmaker or as a box-to-box midfielder.

In his first interview for his new club, Merino offered his own perspective of what he can offer.

“I am a midfielder with a lot of potential. I like to help my team-mates always with the ball or without the ball. I always want to attack to have the ball and score goals and to help the team to go forward. This is always my main mentality, but of course, we know that defence is a really important part of the game.”

At six foot two, Merino is strong in the air (he won over 60% of his aerial duels throughout his career at Osasuna and with the Spanish youth sides), while – as you’d expect from a Spanish midfielder – he’s very comfortable in possession, which does make him an option on the left of a three-man defence if Benitez operates with wing-backs.

Merino can spray both short and long passes with a high degree of accuracy from his trusted left foot, while he is also renowned for his work rate in the middle of the park.

The Spaniard is not blessed with a huge amount of pace, though, and he may take time to adjust to the physical nature of English football.

He did win 18 of his 19 attempted tackles last season, suggesting he’ll bring some combativeness to the Magpies’ midfield

His arrival will certainly boost the options available to Benitez.

The Newcastle manager generally favoured Isaac Hayden and Jonjo Shelvey as the central midfield pairing in his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation last term, with Jack Colback the main alternative.

Shelvey was instrumental in Newcastle’s title-winning season and, having been named in the PFA Championship Team of the Year, should remain relatively immune to his manager’s tinkering.

Merino is expected to ultimately claim a regular role at the expense of Hayden, with his ability to read the game offering protection in front of the back four.

Given that Merino may offer limited attacking threat in that role, he could come in at 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League, with a chance he may be priced at 5.0.

In the Sky Sports game, he sets you back 7.3 to Shelvey’s 8.2, though Matt Ritchie looks better value at 8.3.

Newcastle have been handed a favourable start to the season, with five promising fixtures (hud WHM swa STO bha) following the testing opening home clash against Tottenham Hotspur.

The addition of Merino will certainly provide much-needed strength in depth in central midfield, with his quality on the ball and energy likely to mean that he gets plenty of minutes.

But given that he is still in the early stages of his development, and has missed much of Newcastle’s pre-season, it’s perhaps later in the season when he is more likely to assert himself at St James’ Park.

He will likely have little impact on our preferred Magpie midfielder – the aforementioned Ritchie – who could offer strong initial value via his set-piece and penalty duties. Priced at 6.0 in FPL, the Scot returned from injury to feature for 45 minutes in the midweek win over Bradford.

is Austin guaranteed to start or will Southampton stick with gabbiadini?

    Foster / Myhill

    Alonso / trippier / Cedric / naughton / Francis

Coutinho / pogba / fabregas / ward prowse / Carrol

Lukaku/ Kane / Austin or gabbiadini

Or is it worth going with chicarito from the beginning??

Cant bring myself to go without triple Spurs. Dont think its that good of an option regarding their fixtures and the Wembley factor but Trippier and Alli/Eriksen are some of the best value in the game and Kane is, well, Kane.

I'm in this position too and I'm not comfortable with it. I was always having Kane and I love Eriksen. Trippier is too good a price to ignore.

I've considered waiting until GW3 for Eriksen and having Özil as a differential for Arsenal's decent start but it's risky.

Same. If Ozil was the expected 9.0 hed be in my team already but I cant warrant he will outscore one of Alli/Eriksen at the same price. The only one I can see doing some damage are Lpool mids and I love to have Mane in my team but reckon there might be problems for them early on with CL qualifications and rotations.

I am confused as to why no one seems to be picking Henderson? He stands out as the best 5.5 option, direct free kick taker and behind Milner for penners (who doesnt look a guaranteed starter). But no one seems to have him, have I missed something here?

In my opinion, he is not much more defensive than Pogba who has 20% ownership. Take into account Henderson's threat at set pieces, 5.5 seems a bargain.

        1. AriseSirGiggsy
          • 14 Years

Pogba had 2 midfielders deeper than him most of the time last year. In Liverpool's first choice XI, who plays deeper than Henderson?

          1. ZaZaZu
            • 10 Years
            8 years, 4 months ago

Mata has roughly the same goals and assists as Henderson in past 3-4 seasons and he's a playmaker. I don't dispute that Henderson plays more defensively but he is definitely a threat for assists and goals (he can score from distance and he's their free kick taker). He roams similarly to Pogba in Midfield, yet he has a dramatically lower ownership and 2.5 mil cheaper. I'm just saying that at 5.5, for a 4th or 5th mid he is surely a decent option?

    Lukaku AND Rashford???

So does anyone think that having Lukaku and Rashford is good idea? My reasons for considering the option: - out of premium strikers right now Lukaku looks most set to score points (Lacazette new to the league and maybe no Sanchez to help supply him, Morata may start on the wing until Hazard is back, Jesus/Aguero may be rotated to some extend, Kane has a bit tougher fixtures and there's the slow start and Wembley factors, Firmino may be subject to rotation due to CL) - Rashford is amongst the best options in the 4rd striker category (questions remain on some of his competition - Rooney tough set of fixtures, Defoe/King not clear who will get the points and they have a tougher start to the season, Chicharito starts with 3 away games, Batshyai may only play a couple of games and have Spurs week 2, Gayle starts versus Spurs, Benteke is kinda inconsistent historically, Austin/Gabbiadini there is no guaranteed starter of the two, Vardy has a tough start, Mounie is new to the league and playing for the ultimate underdog in Huddersfield, JRod may be playing on the wing for WBA..)
The arguments for Lukaku - obvious goal threat historically, good fixtures, absolutely nailed as 70+ million signing that has been there all preseason. The arguments for Rashford - good fixtures, has been starting either as lone striker or geenrally played behind Lukaku in pre-season, has looked red hot in pre-season and the creater for most dangerous situations for United, Mourinho is on record that he likes Rashford and that Lukaku and Rashford together is an option for him. If Lukaku does get rotated for whatever reason, he becomes striker. Can play in all three positions behind Lukaku and seems Mourinho's favorite alongside Pogba and Lukaku. It is hard to justify picking up an Unted midfielder either due to rotation risk (most of them) or very high price for what he may potentially return in Pogba.
Who thinks I'm crazy and who is on board to take the risk for first few weeks until a potential WC move (WHU, swa, LEI, sto, EVE, sot, CPY, liv, hud)

It is but only if they play 352 with both upfront. Otherwise Rash will be on the wing and a rotation issue with Martial and Mkhi in form.

Rashford created lots of chances both for himself and for others in their last friendly from behind Lukaku. Unlikely not to get 2 scores (goal and assist). Best player on the pitch by far. Also don't forget what other players are capable of from position behind the striker (Alli, Coutinho, Sanchez, Hazard). Rash is 7.5

    A. Ince
    B. Ritchie
    C. Iwobi
    D. Fraser

Would consider Stan but not until passed fit. Other ideas welcome!

Coin toss between Ince, Phillips and Ritchie for me.

Of those, B imo but consider Phillips at 6.0 with good fixtures as well.

Yep good shout on Phillips. Just felt he was overhyped last season but worth another go

I'm concerned that he had 1 purple patch and the rest of the time was not up to standard

Probably upgrade your bench. Or maybe get Mane for Cout if fit.

Huneymonster to a 4.5 def so you have 2 playing options on your bench.

Repost. How's this for a draft. A little top heavy, but going without Kane and Kaku looks dangerous.

    Foster (Elliot)
Trippier - Kompany - Yoshida (Suttner - Hanley)
Alli - Coutinho - Willian - Ince (RLC)
    Kane - Kaku - Austin

    Any input? Cheers!

I can only see Austin starting the season in the team if they play 2 up front or Gabbiadini is injured

      Toss a coin.

D or E to start with.

Probably E, cos of fixtures mainly

      But I'm warming to Ritchie...

I fancy Ince over Phillips and Ritchie for sure.

Ince vs. Redmond or Tadic depends on your other Soton cover. If 1 or none i would go with Redmond. If you run 2 i would stick with Ince.

    Foster / Myhill
    Cedric Walker Bailly Trippier Long

    Lukaku Defoe JRod

    Hi guys,

Any Southampton fans around or just anyone with good knowledge avout then who can give some clearification about "certain" starters?
From what I have read, Boufal has impressed the most during the pre-season. But is Tadic and Redmond more nailed or will the three of them all start? I know it is just speculations, but ant ideas?
