Romelu Lukaku scores again as Man United’s impressive pre-season form continues, while fellow big ticket striker Alexandre Lacazette is on target in Arsenal’s loss to Sevilla.

Elsewhere, Bournemouth also suffer defeat, but give valuable pitch-time to their summer signings. Here are the notes from Sunday’s matches.

Valerenga 0 Manchester United 3

Romelu Lukaku notched his third goal of pre-season as Man United swept aside their Norwegian hosts with a swagger, much of which came from Paul Pogba.

Lukaku – with 47.9% ownership the most popular player in Fantasy Premier League – headed home an Andreas Pereira corner just after half-time as Jose Mourinho changed personnel and formations at the break.

One of the few to play more than 45 minutes was Pogba. His performance earned rave reviews and he was unlucky not to open the scoring when his shot hit the post.

That honour instead fell to Marouane Fellaini, his powerful header just before the interval coming from a Henrikh Mkhitaryan cross.

United youngster Scott McTominay rounded off the scoring, with the assist coming from Anthony Martial.

Ander Herrera and Juan Mata returned from injury as Mourinho rolled out a 4-1-4-1 first-half formation, in which Marcus Rashford was used as the lone striker, and a 3-5-2 after the break.

United’s most popular defensive pick in FPL, Victor Lindelof (12.1%), put in a more assured performance as part of a back three, with Mourinho declaring post-match that patience was required with his new centre-half.

“Benfica is one of the dominant teams, so he’s more used to playing with the ball than without the ball, so he needs his time and we are going to give him his time to develop. Such a young player needs time. Manchester United is a huge club with huge responsibility; the Premier League is the same. So let’s give him time, but we’re happy with what he is doing, step by step.”

With Phil Jones preferred alongside Eric Bailly in the first half, it would appear that Mourinho may well be leaning towards that pairing for the opening fixture at West Ham. Certainly, Lindelof’s start remains far from assured and the teamsheets against Sampdoria on Wednesday and Real Madrid in the Super Cup on August 8 will be key.

Elsewhere, Pogba – found in 19.9% of FPL squads – enjoys an even bigger ownership base. He continues to impress from a deep-lying midfield role which allows him a certain freedom to roam forward but he’s produced just one pre-season assist and is yet to score.

The news that Nemanja Matic is due to sign for United could well be vital to Pogba’s Fantasy potential.

The arrival of Matic will give Mourinho greater security in central midfield areas and allow him more freedom to grant Pogba license to join the attack with greater regularity. Matic will surely be handed the responsibility to screen the defence, with both Ander Herrera and Pogba relinquished of defensive duty – at least to some extent.

Mkhitaryan also remains a consideration and warrants tracking. He now has two goals and three assists as he looks to nail down regular starts, perhaps in the number ten role.

The Armenian’s 5.6% ownership marks him out as solid differential material to exploit United’s excellent early schedule – a trip to Liverpool looks like being the toughest test they’ll face across the first eight Gameweeks of the season.

Jesse Lingard, who had featured in every pre-season match prior to yesterday was absent with a knock.

United XI First half: Romero; Darmian, Bailly, Jones, Blind; Carrick; Fellaini, Pogba, Mata, Mkhitaryan; Rashford.

United XI Second half: Romero (J. Pereira 61); Lindelof, Smalling, Tuanzebe; Mitchell, Fosu-Mensah, Pogba (McTominay 61), Herrera, A. Pereira; Martial, Lukaku.

Arsenal 1 Sevilla 2

Arsenal’s record signing Alexandre Lacazette hit his first goal on home soil as the Gunners contrived to lose a match and yet still win a cup.

The French striker, owned by 18.3% of FPL managers, converted an Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain cross at the far post to level their Emirates Cup tie with Sevilla.

Lacazette was then substituted, with a number of reports suggesting he had picked up an injury.

Arsene Wenger was quick to scotch those rumours post-match, taking the chance to play down the expectations on his new signing while he was about it.

“No, he was okay. I did take him off, but it was not because he was injured. The only thing I must say with Lacazette, week after week he looks to adapt quickly but overall I think it will take him one or two months.”

The Sevilla match was the Gunners’ second in 24 hours, prompting Wenger to field a much-changed side in which Hector Bellerin, a 13.7%-owned FPL asset, and Oxlade-Chamberlain were used as wing-backs and midfielder Mohamed Elneny again found himself in the back three.

Elneny’s fellow defensive midfielder Francis Coquelin played no part in proceedings and Wenger confirmed that he is unlikely to be fit for the weekend’s Community Shield clash with Chelsea.

“He looks like he has a scan tomorrow (Monday) and I don’t think he will be available for the weekend. He doesn’t look bad, but he will not be available. (It is an) ankle problem, ligament.”

Sevilla won both their Emirates Cup matches and yet it was the hosts who lifted the trophy on goals scored – a strange state of affairs that had a slight ‘my ball, my rules’ feel to it.

Arsenal won’t enjoy such quirks when the season starts, but a relatively generous early schedule could compensate for that.

The Gunners end their pre-season with the Community Shield clash with Chelsea on Sunday. Wenger’s line-up at Wembley will surely give us clear indication of the likely XI to face Leicester City in Gameweek 1.

Arsenal XI: Cech; Koscielny, Elneny (Walcott 77), Monreal; Bellerin (Bramall 46), Ramsey, Willock (Xhaka 60), Oxlade-Chamberlain; Ozil, Welbeck; Lacazette (Iwobi 77).

Bournemouth 0 Valencia 1

Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe started his new recruits as the Cherries fell just short against a strong Valencia side.

Jermain Defoe, Nathan Ake, Asmir Begovic and winger Connor Mahoney, signed on a free transfer when his contract expired at Blackburn Rovers, were all given more than an hour’s pitch-time.

Two Smiths – Adam and Brad – returned from injury to slot into a defence that performed well, and it took a fine second-half goal from Valencia’s Fabian Orellana to breach it.

Bournemouth had played just 24 hours before, against QPR, so the side Howe picked for the Valencia encounter was closing in on his strongest available, although the likes of Charlie Daniels and the in-form Jordan Ibe were rested and Josh King, Junior Stanislas and Callum Wilson are currently out with knocks or injuries.

And which of Begovic and Artur Boruc ends up claiming the starting goalkeeper role remains open, according to the post-match comments of Bournemouth’s assistant manager Jason Tindall.

“There’s no guarantee of who will start. There is healthy competition for the goalkeeper position this year with Artur playing yesterday and Asmir playing today. Artur has been an excellent goalkeeper for us over the last three years and Asmir has impressed us so far. They push each other at training which is good to see”.

Bournemouth XI: Begovic (Ramsdale 69); A Smith (Worthington 67), Cook, Ake, B Smith (Harfield 67); Mahoney (Whitfield 67), Arter, Gosling, Pugh, Fraser; Defoe (Cornick 67).

I think he's worth the punt, if you're feeling brave. He's mostly been played with Bailly, who is surely first choice, so why would Mourinho play them together so often if not to get them comfortable with each other for the league?

Also a chance we'll play 3 at the back sometimes.

    De Gea - Elliot
    Valencia - Bellerin - Huneimer - Prodl - Mee

Quite risky Team, IMO. Sterling is an expensive rotation risk, Tadic hasn't looked great, still unsure about Lacazette. I would say two City players are needed though - KDB seems to be the best shout, and I like the look of Kompany or even Danilo, possibly Jesus over Lacazette.

Just to throw the cat among the pigeons....

Are we placing too much emphasis on our strikers?

Last season the top 10 points scorers comprised of only 3 FWDS and 7 MIDS (the top 3 all being midfielders). The next 10 comprised of 2 FWDS, 3 DEFS and 5 MIDS

Does this suggest that we should be looking at only 1 premium striker and spending more on our premium midfielders?

    1. mearley14

Alternatively, is it essential to identify those top strikers and include them at all costs?

Thanks for your great work on this. I think your argument may be slightly flawed though. While it's true that the premium midfielders scored better than the premium forwards, what happens at the budget end of things?

12 midfielders costing £6m or less (admittedly at this season's prices) scored over 100 points last season. Only one forward did so. A further 10 midfielders scored more than the second highest scoring budget striker.

So I would argue that the premium strikers are essential, unless you want to limit yourself to 4-5-1 or 5-4-1 formation.

    A) Why Austin over Gayle?
    B) Why Yoshida over Bertrand? Only price?
    C) Why Carroll over RLC?
    D) Why Ince over Ritchie?

      A) Better player, fixtures and team.
      B) Price. I personally have gone for B.
      C) RLC place is not guaranteed. Especially if Palace buy a CB.
      D) You've got me?

      A) Austin more PL experience
      B) Price
      C) % ownership
      D) Not sure on this, I've seen a few say Ritchie is the better option.

Better team, proven in prem, Austin love has gone down a bit again though.
Price and Yoshida has some goal threat.
      More nailed.
      More pre-season goals.

      A) Mostly preference. Austin is PL-proven, plays for a better side - but not nailed.

      B) Mainly price. Targett put in a good showing for his last game (2 assists I think). I doubt it affects Bertrand's starting role too much, but is food for thought.

      C) Carroll is more nailed-on than RLC, who could be rotated with Puncheon, McArthur, etc. Hard to say right now.

      D) Ince has been in good form, so I hear. Ritchie is a great shout if his injury wasn't too bad - but this is rather 50/50.

Any chance Hegazi could start with McAuley injured?

Coin Toss really. I've gone for the first, purely because of the fixtures.

How does this look? Too many heavy hitters in defense?

    Foster - Myhill

    Alonso - Kolasinac - Trippier - Aké - Mee

    KDB - Mané - Mkhitaryan - Ward-Prowse - Chalobah

    Lukaku - Benteke - Gayle

Rate my team please. Think it's pretty decent 🙂

    Foster | Elliot
Jones | Cedric | Dawson | (Löwe, Suttner)
Willian | Mkhitaryan | KDB | Chadli (Ince)
    Austin | Lukaku (c) | Kane

      7/10
Jones is not good value, Chadli is very punty, and Mkhitaryan is far from guaranteed a starting place in the team.
      I would prefer Pogba, personally.

Good morning guys. Please RMT and maybe any suggestions. Read the article regarding Kane and have decided to go without him.

    Foster/Fabianski

    Dawson/Yoshida/Bertrand/Daniels
    KDB/Mane/Pogba
    Lukaku/Lacazette/Gabbiadini

    Loftus/MacArthur/Dunk

    Thanks ladies and gents!

Just want to talk about pricing per player. I have read that a lot of people think that there are more players this year over priced than ever before but I'm not so sure.
Like me, I presume most people have 16.5 million on their bench (GK 4.0, Def 4.0 Def 4.0 MF 4.5) or at a push 17 million (GK 4.0) Def 4.5 Def 4.0 MF 4.5). This gives you at least 83 million to buy 11 players, that is just over 7.5 million per player. Now with the current batch of 7 million midfielders and 5-6 million defenders that gives you a great opportunity to buy at least 2 big hitters up front, possibly 3.
If you look at it this way, we haven't got to pick a great squad for 100m at the start of the season, we only have to pick a great first 11 for 83m.
Especially at this stage of the season when we have less information than at any other time, trying to pick a great squad of 15 is nigh on impossible. My idea would be to concentrate on picking the most nailed on first 11 that is possible with 83m and once we have the information (GWs 3-4) either play your wildcard to pick a more balanced squad of 15 or carry over 2 transfers so you can do a double transfer before GW 3 and another double transfer before GW 5.
I still think there is value out there, ie. at present you could get a Chelsea attacker for 7m or a Liverpool attacker for 8.5m. Throw in players like Defoe, Pogba, Zaha, Beneteke and King, we have plenty of options.

Chelsea attacker for 7m, is that Willian?

Willian mainly, you could throw Fab in there as well if he plays number 10.

I don't see it that way. I think ahead of GW1 we can't be sure who's nailed, so it's too risky assuming your first XI will all start. Therefore, I like cheap options on the bench who are probable starters, so no 4m defenders. Also, if you have a 5.5/5m mid on your bench, it is easier to do 1FT to jump on the next Capoue.

So flexibility in your squad of 15 is my view, as opposed to going all-out on XI.

An example of a nailed first 11 (there are plenty more, this is just 1 example)
        Foster
        Daniels Yoshida Dawson
        Zaha Pogba Salah Willian
        Kane Defoe Lukaku

        Cost 83.5m.

I understand what you are saying regarding your bench but I am not picking a first 11 in GW 1 with the intention of someone coming off the bench to replace one of my starting 11. That's why I have said, try and pick 11 players you are sure, or as sure as you can be at this stage, that will start.

I've seen Cedric's stock drop quite a bit in the last few days. Is he now a rotation risk with Pied?

He is only back in training today. Soton have two friendlies left with latter on Saturday. Not sure he'll make that after five days of training which would mean he won't start the season.
