Welcome to the first of this summer’s pre-season Rate My Team Surgeries.

These articles will look at initial Fantasy Premier League squads and will be published ahead of Gameweek 1. Each time one of the FFScout moderator and contributor team will put forward their selection for scrutiny in order to start the discussion.

The aim is to highlight some of the key concerns we have faced in constructing our squads, which hopefully will chime with other FPL managers’ issues.

In addition, we want the comment section to provide a useful opportunity for you to submit your own RMTs. Please also be helpful to those asking for advice. The key to successful rating of teams is to give advice as well.

I have drawn the first straw to start off this series with my balanced 3-4-3 selection.

My Team

Key Concerns

My lack of Manchester United or Chelsea defence is a concern as both sets of players are highly owned. It is the gaping Red Devils shaped hole in my back line that is my biggest issue as Chelsea’s fixtures are not great after their opener at home to Burnley, while Jose Mourinho’s troops early matches look superb. David De Gea or Eric Bailly are targets – although each will need funds to be freed up elsewhere.

De Gea could be a possibility as I’m not wholly convinced by my cheap as chips West Brom goalkeeper double up. Would I be better off going for the Spaniard, or indeed the save points that perhaps West Ham stopper Joe Hart or Watford’s Heurelho Gomes may offer early on?

The third striker spot is a tough one this season. Southampton’s Charlie Austin is there as a place holder currently and I’d be particularly keen to hear arguments for other strikers priced at 6.5 or below or even why I should invest more in this berth.

Nailed On Picks

Flexibility is driving my initial selection – and that for me is why Harry Kane is nailed on. Downgrading an injured or poorly performing Kane is easy, upgrading to the game’s most expensive striker could require surgery or an early wildcard. I’m also not convinced that Dele Alli or Christian Eriksen will match last season’s golden boot winner’s output.

Kevin De Bruyne looks the best attacking Manchester City option for me and is 0.5 cheaper than the only other one I’d consider – Gabriel Jesus. The Belgian looked particularly commanding in City’s 3-0 rout of Spurs in pre-season.

One of Nathan Ake or Charlie Daniels looks essential for me. Bournemouth defenders are among the best FPL resources due to their command of attacking points. Clean sheets are merely a nice extra for them. Both this pair appeal, but currently Ake has the edge as one of the best defenders last season for points per match. He was also 2016/17’s best player in terms of baseline bonus points.

As a Brighton fan I’ve got to have some representation and I believe defence is the main place to find it. With two assists full back Markus Suttner has impressed in pre-season and has even been fielded on the wing at times during matches. Lewis Dunk is another option here  – but his ill discipline concerns me. Also talk of his bonus potential hinges on clean sheets – which I’m not convinced my team will excel at in the top flight. Suttner’s attacking potential gives him the edge for me.

Romelu Lukaku is going nowhere with United’s fixtures and his strong pre-season form. Don’t even attempt to persuade me to ditch him.

The Punt

John Stones is my main punt. I originally had United’s Victor Lindeloff in this place but I’m concerned that he may be eased into Premier League action and miss the odd game at the start. City’s Stones could also be a rotation risk, hence the punt, but with wingbacks set to be deployed I can see him earning starts at first and if pre-season is anything to go by he could also bring me attacking returns. Already he has scored twice and assisted another goal during pre-season. If he can carry on that form his lowly 3.6% ownership and 5.5 price tag could rocket.

Formation

I’ve tried to construct a team around a four at the back formation but it just doesn’t sit right with this dullard. I favour the attacking prospects of midfielders and strikers over the dull ache of disappointment when a defender loses a clean sheet.

I’m currently favouring 3-4-3 but am willing to swap to 3-5-2 should five viable midfielders emerge and the third striker well dries up completely.

First game back in the Prem, at SJP, and under Benitez we're generally defensively sound. I think it'll be a Spurs win, but it doesn't seem like they'll wipe the floor.

I've got to say I like your selections Jonty, because they're very similar to mine!

    Foster / Elliot

    Alonso / Kolasinic / Daniels / Yoshida / Hunemeier

    KDB / Pogba / Willian / Carroll / RLC

    Kane / Lukaku / Gayle

As far as I can tell the major difference we have is the 4th midfielder. You've spent an extra 2.5 going from RLC to Zaha. Do you not think the attacking returns from my defender outweigh the extra input from Zaha? It basically comes down to Alonso and RLC vs Suttner and Zaha i guess?

    What does everyone else think?

I feel Alonso could be a rotation risk early on and also not convinced he'll once again perform as a 7.0 def. He was brilliant at 5.9 last season -which is how much he cost me. At 7.0 though I expect vintage era Baines or Vidic.

I can see problems down the line with relying on playing one or two or Carroll, RLC and Gayle every week. Leaves you exposed to price falls and not much wiggle room to upgrade. Zaha is easy to downgrade to RLC if he fires...but upgrading to Zaha is tough.

I think that's a good basic rule early on - make sure your team is flexible.

Be flexible. One good 5-6.5 option will emerge...so keep Gayle for now.

It's JWP and Mesa that is the issue. Have a look at RMT in the Members area - filter mids and 5.5 and see what comes up.

Please give me some honest critiques on my team this year. My team was a train wreck last year so hoping for a better showing this year. I plan to play 3-4-3.

    DeGea (Fabianski)
Jagielka - Daniels -Dawson (Hanley. Hunemeier)
Salah - DeBruyne - Alli - Pogba (Lee Chung Young)
    Rooney - Vardy - Firmino

I have 1.5 in the bank and had Morata in instead of Vardy but i like having the extra bank to upgrade if things start bad as Rooney and Vardy frighten me a bit. Thoughts?

You need more captain options. Lacazette/Lukaku/Aguero/Jesus/Kane/Morata/Sanchez/Hazard type players.

Jags has an absolute horror show of fixtures after STO. Same goes for Rooney. Leicester has not showed up once in preseason. No premium forwards, not even one, so it will be very hard for you to get one. No need for Fabianski if you have De Gea. Some serious tinkering needed.

Fabianski > Elliot save the .5 since you will be starting DDg every week most likely

Ditch Jagielka immediately. Horrible fixtures in the first 8 and will be on the bench at to start with in any case. Go with Trippier using the .5 saved from above.

Upgrade one of the 4.0 def fillers to a 4.5 def like Mee/Suttner/Dunk/Naughton

      Firmino > Austin/Gayle
      Pogba > Willian
Use the 3m saved to upgrade Vardy to Lukaku. Leicester have looked torrid in preseason and they don't have great fixtures to start.

Lee > T Carroll. Nailed on starter in place of somebody who will get few mins.

      Rooney > Defoe
Everton fixtures again and he will likely play behind Sandro

      Hope this helps

I have Zaha until Gameweek 6.

Gayle is a differential and has good fixtures.

Austin/Ramsey might have reduced gametime and Chicharito would need monitoring (even though he played in the prem).

      Just my thoughts...

Way too many risks for the start of the season imo.

Ashford looks good but is a risk, as is Mkhi although I like that punt.

Ramsey is too punty as he's often deep.

    Hi!
Will you guys help me out and do you agree?

    – FOSTER –
(cheap goalie, plays for a defensive team and WB has great fixtures)

    – CÈDRIC –
(offensive wb, plays for a good defensive team and they have great fixtures)
    – DAWSON –
(plays for a defensive team, alittlebit of goalthreat and great fixtures)
    – WARD / LOWTON – rotation
(two defenders that you can rotate for extremly good fixtures)

    – POGBA –
(should be able to attack some more with Matic coming in and we know what this guy can do. Good fixtures too)
    – SALAH –
(had to have a liverpool mid. On fire atm and have PL-experiance. The two first games are really good)
    – ALLI –
(also had to have a spurs attacking player. But I´m not sure what to expect early on from spurs so 12,5 for Kane was too much)
    – TADIC –
(good fixtures and he is a good player. Consider Redmond, Chadli and Ritchie aswell)
    – LOFTUS-CHEEK –
(cheap and offensive player that can get minutes on the pitch early on)

    – LUKAKU –
(an absolut beast. Don´t need to say more)
    – JESUS –
(with no ManC midfielder (so much alternatives and rotation going on…) I had to get an attacker. Pep seems to love this guy and he preformed good last year)
    – FIRMINO –
(liverpool scores for fun at times and with two good fixtures to start with)

!!! No Chelsea player because they downgraded Costa to Morata and Hazard is injuried. Also pretty hard fixtures to begin with !!!
!!! No Arsenal player because they have hard fixtures. I don´t think they will start the season very well !!!
!!! West Ham, Everton and Bournemoth will do very well after a few GW. I´m going to consider lots of players from them !!!

If you choose to avoid Kane and Sanchez(if he stays), you should have a heavy defence. Your defence seems weak and Tadic, Firmino are not a heavy material. Downgrade a striker or a mid and upgrade defence or get Kane imo. Good luck

    Thoughts?

I see Kane, Lukaku and De Bruyne as essentials. The rest of my squad I tried to balance.

I kept 1mil in case I need to replace or upgrade any players should they not be starters. I'm only worried about Lindelöf for now. If my starting 11 is nailed, I may look at upgrading Foster to De Gea, upgrading Lindelöf to a premium wingback, or upgrading Willian/Zaha to Pogba/Mkhitaryan should they hit the ground running given their fixtures. Alternatively the 1mil could also help with getting any early in-form players.

Lindelof is iffy to start gw1. I would go Foster to DDG and Lindelof to Dawson.

Personally don't like Chicharito for the first 2 gw's. I would use .5 to get Defoe since you have Zaha. Alternatively downgrade to Gayle/Austin and upgrade Zaha to Pogba.

    5-3-2 RMT!

    Foster

    Valencia / Kompany / Trippier / Bertrand / Daniels

    KDB / Pogba / Willian

    Lukaku / Kane

That is actually a real solid team IMO.Really strong.
Never thought about a 5-3-2 formation, to be honest...
Maybe change Pogba into Miky> He has had a great run in the pre-season, and seems to fit well with United's Lukaku era style of game.

However, you are basically not playing a 3rd Striker throughout the year - which isn't terrible with both Kane&Lukako - but still....

What do you think pf my team?
      Foster
      Alonso / Cedric / Trippier
      KDB / Ali / Coutinho/ Willian
      Lukaku / Austin/ J-Rodriges

      Elliott / Blind/ Yeddin / Carroll

Really not keen on the 4th mids / 3rd forwards that are available right now, none seem to really stand out to me.

If/when form players emerge in those roles I can downgrade Valencia to a 4.5 defender and upgrade one of the bench players, or wait till the GW7 WC, so I'm only without a 3rd striker until one emerges in the first few weeks or I WC at the international break

Little bit of tinkering just now though has done Kompany to Stones and Milivo to a 4.5, which has enabled Pogba to Coutinho

Ahhh! Sorry, I had a bigger reply but FFScout hasnt put it all up 🙁

          Main points:

2 budget strikers and no Kane worry me a little - he might get off to a slow start, but if he gets off to a flying start its v hard to get him in without taking multiple hits

Love the midfield! Would love to have Alli too but couldnt find room for him amongst KDB/Kane/Lukaku/ and now Pogba/Coutinho

Cedric > Yoshida until we hear clear word that former will start GW1 (had extended rest from Confed Cup, Cedrics only just gone back to training)

Blind at 5.5 is a lot of money to leave lying on the bench, especially considering uniteds fixtures - ideally upgrade to someone more nailed like Bailly and dont leave him on your bench - he will taunt you with CS points

Like Alonso when Chelseas fixtures improve (FPL fixture tracker has a great run from GW8-27), however I'd leave him alone at first - get a similiarly attacking minded premium def from United/City/Spurs until then, which will free up 0.5-1.0 for upgrades elsewhere until then 🙂

Avoiding MUN, MCI, CHE possible rotation

    Begovic, Hart
    Alderweireld, Ake, Monreal, Suttner, Hunemeier
    Alli, Salah, Ozil, Lanzini, Carroll
    Kane, Benteke, Mounie

Have a thought to get both Brighton's GK's and upgrade Monreal to Kolasinac but will probably stay with this, it has been a whole week and dont really want to change anything. Thoughts?

Thanks for the replies, getting Lukaku/ Jesus/ Morata over Benteke means i should downgrade my mid which consists of 4 players i really believe they ll bring points. And Benteke could easily outscore all of the above for the first 5 GWs. Lukaku plays for Mourinho, Jesus could swap with Aguero and miss a game, Morata is worse than Bats atm. Plus they all have CL games and things will get complicated. I will surely consider Lukaku in the future but his high ownership makes me stay away for now.

RMT... which one do you prefer:

    Team A
    DE GEA, ELLIOT
    Trippier, DAWSON, Yoshida, Lowton, 4.0
de Bruyne, ALLI, Willian, Zaha, Carroll
    Lukaku, JESUS, Austin

    or Team B
    FOSTER, MYHILL
    Trippier, NAUGHTON, Yoshida, Lowton, 4.0
de Bruyne, COUTINHO, Willian, Zaha, Carroll
    Lukaku, KANE, Austin

I like A far more but I'm worried about not having Kane in there.

I like it though you have two non players - possibly three if RLC is rotated. I'd try and eek out another 0.5 to upgrade one of Rangel or Fletcher...or at least swap RLC for a more reliable starter - that's why Carroll is in so many RMTs - almost perfect 4.5 player.

Yeah. I've always gone dead bench route. My thinking is, if one of my main players doesn't play and a cheap playing sub comes on, you usually get 2 points.

Im happy to not get those 2 points that week and have a stronger regular starting 11.

Hi Jonty really like this article. It would be nice if you could do one for each of the Scoutcast team and discuss the feedback in the run-up to GW1. Looking at your team, how about downgrading Austin to an Abraham or Okaka and upgrading Stones > Valencia or Foster > DDG?

Cheers- that Abraham move is one I'm considering to get Bailly/DDG in.

I have small wiggle room to swap Abraham to an emerging 5.5 fwd should they emerge.

Pedro is injured (Willian frees up 1m)

Cedric isnt 100% to start GW1 (switch to Yoshida for same price, or Bertrand for .5 more)

Lindelof at risk of rotation (Bailly is .5 more and nailed on if you can spare the cash)

Definitely wouldn't go for Blind, too much of a rotation risk for a pricey defender. Could downgrade there and that would perhaps save you having to do so for Alli or Coutinho.

      A few comments:

      - no kane is scary
      - I don't rate tadic, I would try to save 0.5 on your defence and get zaha instead
      - Cédric may not play 1st GW as he was playing with his country. I would replace with a 4.5 to save 0.5 (see above)
      - Francis is not nailed, I would replace him with another 4.5

I have always preferred a value defence to accommodate a premium midfield. But now struggling with 3rd striker and bench as a result.

    Foster l (Elliot)
    Trippier l Bertrand l Dawson l (4.0) l (4.0)
    KDB l Alli l Coutinho l Willian l Loftus-Cheek
    Lukaku l Jesus l (Abraham)

Key question - how much bench fodder can you get away with? Will having two ghost 4m defenders on your bench really hurt you?

What formation are you looking at starting with? If it's 3-4-3 you have too much invested in def.

I would downgrade Evans > 4.0 filler that has the lowest ownership and is uninjured.

Lindelof isn't looking a likely starter so would swap Foster > DDG to cover United's backline and Lindelof > Dawson. If you do this, downgrade Fabianski to Elliot since you will start DDg every week.

Cedric > Yoshida till we know for certain if the former starts gw1

      Daniels to perhaps Trippier

Use the .5 itb to go Mounie > Austin/Gayle and swap RLC for Tom Carroll

Either 4-4-2 or - 3-4-3 depending on the weak..

I might just witch foster to DDG and Blind in to Hegazi, who should start - seeing how the west brom d is injured...

With either of those formations you do not need 5 defenders that start. I would downgrade Yedlin to a 4.0 filler to free up 0.5. Use the 0.5 to turn Foster > DDG and Blind > Dawson perhaps.

I thought about keeping both 4.5 mil as 4-5 D players in order to maybe transfer in a future window one to a 4mil D player, and upgrading ethier JRod to Gayle or Austin to Chicharito, after his harsh fixtures at the start..

I'm afraid my front is not strong enough for the long run
