Update Four of our summer development programme is imminent, so I thought I’d bring you an early preview of the new feature introduced in this round of changes – the Fantasy Football Scout heatmaps.

While you may be familiar with the use of heatmaps in football as a means of displaying player touches in a single match, we wanted to go further.

As our members know, we enable our Opta data to be displayed per match, across the season or indeed over a number of intervals. These include all home or away matches, or even the last two, four and six matches or Gameweeks – home or away.

By ensuring that our heatmaps could also be built and displayed for these intervals, we were able to increase their scope significantly.

Firstly, this meant that would could create meaningful heatmaps for events other than just touches.

Because we could visualise data over a group of matches, or even the season, there was some real value in mapping events such as shots, chances created and passes received, among others.

These really came alive when we built heatmaps into our comparison tools.

This enables us to view patterns in player behaviour – analysing queries such as “where has Alexis Sanchez received passes in his last four home matches, compared with away matches”.

The answer is below.
Alexis Sanchez Passes Received Last Four Home vs Last Four Aways
members

As you can see, Sanchez received the majority of his passes out on the left flank over his last four away matches, while he took up more central positions when receiving the ball at the Emirates.

This is the kind of analysis that is now possible, confirming information that has been difficult to decipher or collect previously – other than by watching all of Sanchez’s previous matches, of course.

But our heatmaps can also be applied to teams and, in this way, Fantasy managers can analyse pairings created by forthcoming fixtures and attempt to identify areas of strength and weakness.

For example, AFC Bournemouth travel to West Brom for Gameweek 1 and, analysing their heatmaps for last season (all matches), we can find some areas of potential for the visitors.

West Brom Challenges Lost vs Bournemouth Successful Take-ons – 2016/17 Season
members

West Bromwich Albion’s lost challenges are mapped on the left, indicating that they were more susceptible to being beaten by attackers on the right-side of their defence.

Equally, if we look at Bournemouth’s map of successful take-ons – when a player beats his defender – we see that the Cherries are particularly strong down their left flank.

We can therefore deduce that West Brom’s Craig Dawson may be targeted by Ryan Fraser and Charlie Daniels in this match and that they may get some joy in this area, perhaps even some Fantasy returns.

These are just two examples of how the feature can be used to improve your analysis of teams and players.

I’ve also produced a preview movie showing further cases and illustrating the heatmaps in action.

Heatmaps are currently on our test server and will be made available to our members as part of Update Four, which is due to go live later this week.

Heatmaps Preview Movie

A reminder that, if you want access to this forthcoming update and other future additions to the members’ area, you can sign up for the new season now for our pre-season price of £12.50 (RRP £15.00).

Existing registered users can upgrade via this link. New users, who are yet to get a registered account, can sign up via this link.

If you’re new to the benefits of Fantasy Football Scout membership, you can get full details, along with a series of movies previewing the content, via this page.

Tough one with city. Like kdb and Jesus. But both have an element of risk with kdb playing slightly deep and Jesus wide. Kompany I would seriously like but can't make the numbers add up.

Had missed Abraham joining. Thanks. Rightly or wrongly looking for the cheapest possible player who plays on the bench. They are only there for rotation or injury to the main players, both of which I'm ideally avoiding anyway. Having said that I'm not looking to put three subs into the team who have no chance of game time. So maybe need to reconsider ayew.

    Best 3-way rotation?

In these times of xi consisting of five at the back, I will probably go against the grain with a classic 3-way rotation. In my view, Trippier has too much predicted value to be overlooked. But then what? The United defense has to be covered so for the moment I have DDG due to the uncertainties of the xi. I also have picked Cedric as my second main defender. For Sotons tougher fixtures, I might have to play two of the rotating trio.

The rotating defenders I've chosen are Mee, Dunk and Naughton. It is crucial that the rotating trio are nailed on. Are there anybody else going for the classic 3-way-approach out there? Which defenders have you picked? Has the pre-season given you any hints of a better trio of nailed on gems?

I also have DDG Trippier Cedric, and it will either be Kompany + a backup 4.5 or a 2 way rotation with 4.5, my 5th defender will always be a 4.0

Suttner is prob a good bet and Bruno even though he is 37 could be golden, both for assist and bonuspoints, and Newcastle defenders comes to mind, and one of the Stokes wing backs but mauybe not until fixtures loosen up a little. Francis is captain at Bournemouth and one will suspect he starts at RB, could be golden but has comp from Smith though. i would avoid Swansea atm, not looking great that defence.

Cheers! Have read it and before and it is a great post. Was interested though of the communitys views of potential prospects now when predicted line ups have a higher degree of predictability.

Any of them really, plus you also have Fraser, Ritchie etc who are also popular on here. I'd take a punt on any one of them to start with, and if another one catches fire and yours doesn't, it's an easy transfer.

Cedric hasn't played any pre-seasons matches do to his absence on international cup with his national team - so yoshida is the safer bet for GW1

I'd expect about 9 goals this season from a nailed KDB and about 19 from a nailed Sanchez. That's about 50 FPL points more - that's a hell of a lot of assists he'd have to beat Sanchez by even to justify the price difference.

    KdB - Coutinho - Fabregas - Fraser - Carroll
    Kane - Jesus - Ayew

All players seem likely of game time - although some (KdB, Coutinho, Kane) are more assured than others (Fabregas, Fraser, Ayew).

The idea is to play Fabregas every week and if he doesn't feature then one of Fraser or Ayew can fill in. Fraser and Ayew themselves offer very good rotation option - wba, WAT, pal, NEW, BRI, WAT, LEI, HUD, LEI

    Carroll used for emergencies

If you can stretch Abraham for 5.5 could be better than ayew

i feel that going for abraham would be bad for the fraser/swansea rotation. Too many points on the bench

JRod and a 4.0 defender, or Abrahams and a 4.5?

Planning to play 3 at the back, so 5th so not a problem having 5th defender as bench warmer

Can't really squeeze another 0.5. Plus I already have JWP and Cedric from Soton. Don't like trebling up on a team this early.

Hoping he has a quiet CS so his ownership stays low - could be the best differential ever.

For me its him or Kane. And Sanchez's 12.0 in midfield feels like a bigger jump from the next best option (KDB/Erik/Pool), that Kane's 12.5 is over his next best (Kaku/Jesus/Laca) even though theres really only 0.5 in it.

So I'm taking Kane and a 9.5 mid and pocketing the change.

True, if he stays. Lacazette being the go to forward has changed my opinion for now on Sanchez if stays... If he goes Man City my head will fall off as got KDB & Jesus

Only 4 teams kept a CS at home to West Ham last season. So their attacking players could still be decent away from home....

6th most away goals last season, right behind Chelsea.

Those fixtures don't put me off chicharito, he will be desperate to score at old Trafford too

5.0 defenders is a tough bracket. Is Daniels really the best 5.0 going around? Ake seems like a good bet, as do the Southampton lads. Phil Jones maybe?

If you had Yoshi and were looking for one other at 5.0, who'd you take?

Would probably try and find .5 to get Danilo or another 5.5. But options in the 5.0 may consider Schlupp if nailed

Daniels. He's a bargain at that price given his performances the last 2 seasons.

Anyone think Aaron Mooy can replicate his Championship form in the Premier League? Decent option for 5.5m.

First time I've seen Colback in a RMT - is he nailed? Played 21 Championship games last season, and scored zero goals?
