Next up in our summer series of members’ articles, we move to focus on one of the key sources of Fantasy talent – Tottenham Hotspur.

We start by analysing their performance on a team level, assessing last season’s data in order to spot trends and areas improvement. Following that, we drill down into the player data, pinpointing the key individuals.

For this article, we also focus on two specific points of interest for Fantasy managers – assessing the Dele Alli versus Christian Eriksen conundrum, while weighing up the allure of Harry Kane as a “fire and forget” captaincy option.

It’s fair to say that Mauricio Pochettino’s side showed their mettle last season after a disastrous end to 2015/16 saw them pick up two points in the final four fixtures and tumble out of the title race.

Spurs improved their points haul from 70 to 86 and also scored far more goals than beforehand – a total of 86 was far superior to 69 in the previous campaign and more than any team in the top-flight.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

1/ Puncheon's got the captaincy so I can see what you mean and indeed figures as my enabler if I do a Kun Kaku Kane front 3.
Had a couple of really below par seasons; have to hope he gets back to that.

2/ Wilf is well priced. 4+ ppg is really good for a 7.0

RMT please, first post on here and I'm pretty settled on it, so feel free to rip it to shreds and have me waste another week of my life:

    Foster Elliot
    Yoshida Trippier Alonso Daniels (4.0)
    Willian Salah KBD Mkhi RLC
    Jesus Kaku (4.5)

There doesn't seem to be much mention of Alonso on here, and if last season form is anything to go by he's a surer pick than of the 7m midfielder (and forward!) options. I'm also thinking of going 5-3-2 when Willian is taken out of first team duties unless Chicarito pulls some blinders. Any thoughts?

Which players are genuine wing backs? (i.e. Essentially a winger with defensive duties, listed as a midfielder in formations, but listed as defenders in FPL)

I think we are overstating the size of this pool of players. Alonso is a wing back. Kolasinac probably will be, Bellerin could be if he wins his place back. Valencia could be if united continue to play 3 at the back, and one of Shaw/Darmian/Blind. Then we have city, who may play 3 at the back sometimes with wing backs of Walker and one of Danilo/Mendy. Someone else pointed out Watford may also adopt this system. Everton have also experimented.

To my eyes we have one nailed on wing back at this stage: Alonso. A few probables (e.g. Kolasinac) and then a few more gambles. The likes of Trippier and Bertrand are defenders in 4 at the back formations, albeit attacking... they often rely on a midfielder dropping back in order for them to bomb forward.

    1. Eze Really?

Not many players have defensive cover like Azpi for Alonso. My concern if Azpi goes to RWB

Tottenham don't play 4 at the back? Last season they played a back 3 with Rose/Davies/Trippier/Walker as wing backs.

      1. The Tinkerman
        • 10 Years
        8 years, 4 months ago

Dier wasn't playing as a CB the majority of the time. They had a back 4 of Walker, Toby, Vert, Rose (when fit) with 2 of Dier/Dembele/Wanyama in front of the back 4. I think it was vs. Chelsea they tried to play 3 at the back to match them up, they tried it a few more times around then, but for the majority of the season it was a back 4.

        1. The Tinkerman

          Walker:
27 games as RB in a back 4
          8 games as a RM/RWB

          In PL and CL.

Correction: Dier did actually play CB quite a lot, but often in a 4 at the back because of injuries to their other CBs. They still played a back 4 the majority of the season including when all of the central defensive players were fit.

I've always felt this. At the same time, clean sheets are such a stable source of points for your team and relatively speaking, are largely overlooked and dismissed by the wider manager.

I think it's more important to nail the early WC than this one now.

Additionally, it's more straightforward in nailing those early clean sheets and being able to afford the necessary players that cover them.

I have still seen lots of comments regarding how Aguero is still "Essential"! Really?

Myth Busting: Aguero has hardly ever been essential.

    Lets look at some facts.

The Early Years: I would say this would be the seasons before 13/14. I would suggest that players like Robin Van Persie and Gareth Bale were far more essential than Aguero back then.

2013/14: I like to call this the Suarez season. I, like many I presume, would have had 2 Liverpool forwards for large chunks of this season. I did play Aguero on occasions but no way was he essential.

2014/15: He had a strong season with an explosion against Spurs (still missed a penalty though). He was still injured for parts of the season but when he was fit he was in my side.

2015/16: Another strong season with a huge explosion against Newcastle (will he ever play against a defence that bad again?) Injured for parts again, but again, when fit he was in my side.

2016/17: Pep's first season. He was quite clear from the start that Pep had issues with Aguero. On occasions last season if you had captained him, you wouldn't have collected many points!! Penalty misses and a red card didn't help! No way essential... and one could argue that for the first time in his City career he was even nailed on.

Now lets also throw in Jesus to the mix (a Pep signing who is loved by the manager). Throughout his city career, Aguero has always been first choice. Other forwards like Tevez, Dzeko, Negredo and Iheanacho all had to take a back seat to the Argentine. That certainly is not the case now. Jesus is the first choice, can play in multiple positions and is £1m cheaper.

    Conclusion:
Those that are still thinking that Aguero is the first name in their squads please read this. He has hardly ever been essential week in week out. In fact I would argue that apart from large chunks of the 14/15 and 15/16 seasons you would have done better without him by spreading the money over different players to give you an overall stronger squad. Yes he probably can still be explosive (that is always the worry) but with the number of attacking assets City have got, the chances of him staying on the pitch long enough is a long shot. I feel that the younger Jesus will definitely start more games and even when they start together, it will be Jesus that plays the 90 minutes and not Aguero.

Take from this what you like but he will not be coming near my squad when I can have Jesus and a better midfielder/defender.

PS. Explosion incoming against Brighton anyone!!!!!!!!

Aguero being essential in last seasons is not a myth.

However this year yes even as a city fan I would agree with giving him a pass for Jesus

I'm a Brighton fan and I think we'll get hammered....but I'd say Jesus and KDB are more secure options to start.

If Aguero starts he will score - 20 goals in 25 starts says he's worth the risk.

I'm risking Suttner. Even with Jesus playing up front for me, I 'm hoping that Brighton score and that Suttner does a bit of marauding up the left flank (against Walker).

I've gone with Jesus over KDB. If you're right and Brighton do get thrashed, I'm hoping that it is Jesus who bags a brace at least!!

True, but to predict these 25 starts will be a nightmare. If people are happy with an 11.5m forward sat on their bench for a 5 minute cameo then they are indeed risk takers.

    A) Cedric / Yoshida + Austin (433)
    B) Bertrand + Richie (422)

B gives second sub a likely non playing forward, A gives a 4.5 mid. Other subs are a 4.0 def and T. Carroll.

I'd be dead happy with that to be honest. Yeah I'll definitely be waiting till I've got a front 3 and 3/4 midfielders before I start picking defenders. Morata and two 10+ goal forwards seems great.

    3. britlander
      • 10 Years

I did an 8 person draft:

      Courtois / Gomes
      Valencia / Alderweireld / Monreal / Bellerin / Otamendi
      Eriksen / Ozil / Mkhitaryan / Pedro / Mirallas
      Jesus / Iheanacho / Gray

My advice would be to pick a striker first. That position has the fewest appealing choices, and you'll want at least 2 in pretty much any formation. I went for a strong midfield, and you can see that my second and third strikers are pretty dire.

Also worth considering that you're picking for the whole season. I grabbed Pedro even though he's injured because I think he'll do well once he's back in the team. Flagged players can be bargains, keep an eye on Hazard as he's likely to last a few rounds. Same for Sanchez/Coutinho, though they're obviously risky with the transfer situations.

A good defense is pretty easy to end up with. Might want to grab Alonso fast if you're keen on him, but otherwise you're pretty much guaranteed to get a strong back 6.

Looks good, that midfield is sweet. Thanks for the tips, I've been thinking along the same lines. Want to get a good front three quickly for sure. I'd be happy enough with Iheanacho, could work out great if he gets a move.

I was watching Everton recently and Sandro sucks and Rooney past his best , maybe this Calvert Linen guy at 5.0 m might be an alternative for a cheap 3rd striker to stash on bench if playing 4-4-2 or 3- 5-2 ? Especially if Siggy signs.

As an Everton supporter and watching recent matches. One would have to be brain dead to pick him. My guess is he won't get in the side after week 3. Everton will take until xmas to settle.

Trippier - Yoshida - Ake (Rangel) (Mee)

Mane - KDB - Willian - Salah (Carroll)

    Lukaku - Jesus - JRod

Nearly identical to mine. I worry about lack of Arsenal cover though.

similar to mine also but I was concerned about Arsenal cover and swapped Salah for Ramsey, which also freed up money for a better 3rd striker

heavy defense works after a few games when you have sure shot idea of CS returns. Better to strengthen your attack.

    A: Kola-Ritchie-Sigurdsson
    B: Blind/Monreal (or other 5.5 or less)-Atsu-KdB

Plan to bring in Hazard when fit

No no no no no no I'll tell you why.

Conte said he needs to adapt. To the prem = rotation risk

      Bad fixtures.

      Unproven in premier league

      Unproven in ormeirr

From what i have seen, Conte who never worries about dropping people and Bats form, I would not be surprised if Bats starts over Morata for the first few weeks.
