A smart finish from rising star Dominic Calvert-Lewin confirms Everton’s progress in the Europa League following a generally uneventful evening in Slovakia.

Ruzomberok 0 Everton 1 (0-2 on aggregate)

A Dominic Calvert-Lewin goal settled the second leg of Everton’s Europa League tie with Slovakian side Ruzomberok, with the Toffees now through to the competition’s play-off stage.

The England U19 international came on in the second half and finished smartly from the edge of the area after being released by Davy Klaassen.

Everton controlled a rather drab match, dominating possession and having 12 shots to their hosts’ four, but the lack of overall quality on show was demonstrated by the fact that the Toffees managed only two attempts on target.

Manager Ronald Koeman played four at the back in the first leg, but switched to a three-man defence of skipper Phil Jagielka, Ashley Williams and Michael Keane in Slovakia.

Tom Davies and Leighton Baines were used as wing-backs in a 3-5-2 formation in which Wayne Rooney and Sandro played up front, with Klaassen in the number 10 role just behind them.

Fantasy veteran Baines has consistently produced points as a left-back over the years. Should he spend time this season in a more advanced position, he could become a very attractive option indeed.

As for Davies, who managed two goals and three assists from a limited run in central midfield last year, he might struggle to repeat the feat from a wider and more defensive role. He did, however, impress, bringing an energy and verve notably lacking in Cuco Martina when he played as a right-back in the first leg.

Should Davies be utilised as a right wing-back in the continued absence of Seamus Coleman, it doesn’t look good news for the Fantasy prospects of either Martina or Mason Holgate as 4.5 options in defence.

Jordan Pickford made his debut in the Everton goal and would probably have wished for more to do as he bids to make the number one jersey his own, while up front, Rooney, Sandro and Klaassen again indulged in some nice interplay but produced little in the way of end product.

That was left to Calvert-Lewin, who replaced Sandro and played centrally, with Rooney allowed a freer role. Koeman used a similar tactic in the first match and Rooney looked more comfortable in both ties when not required to operate solely in the centre.

Whether that means Calvert-Lewin could be handed a regular role up front remains to be seen, although Koeman was quick to praise him, and hint at his future, post-match.

“Maybe Dominic feels a bit more comfortable as one of two strikers. He’s strong, he’s fast and he scored a great goal.”

His price – 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League and 7.8m in the Sky game – is classic budget third striker material, but how much pitch-time he’ll be handed is the great unknown.

What is beyond doubt is Everton’s daunting start to the domestic season. An opening day visit by Stoke City is the calm before a storm involving last year’s top three and a trip to Man United.

At least the Toffees now have two competitive matches under their belt, and they go into today’s play-off draw with another two-legged tie awaiting them on August 17 and 24.

In domestic terms, the first leg is four days prior to a Gameweek 2 trip to Manchester City, with the second leg taking place two days before a Gameweek 3 visit to Chelsea.

Progress past the play-offs and they will qualify for the group stages of European football’s most gruelling slog, throwing the risk of rotation into the mix of their squad.

Everton: Pickford; Williams, Keane, Jagielka; Davies, Schneiderlin (Barry 81), Gueye, Baines, Klaassen; Sandro (Calvert-Lewin 69), Rooney (Mirallas 86).

Subs not used: Stekelenburg, Martina, Holgate, Lookman.

Mili ---> 4.5, no point wasting 0.5 when you're not going to play him.

Use that 1.0 to upgrtade the defence, would not want to go into the season with 2 x 4.0 defs.

Everton will face a relegation battle this season.

People who think Everton have done well this summer I disagree with. They've signed a lot of players, but they've lost a world class striker and their best playmaker in Barkley.

Now all I see is a very slow team all over the pitch. The wide players are poor, the forwards lack quality. They will struggle for goals this season for sure. The defence is adequate but ageing.

15TH place and below I predict for them. Fantasy points? I wouldn't pick a single Everton player.

Trust me, Everton are going to struggle big time. It's all well and good having a lovely little core of the team, and I'll admit that Pickford, Coleman, Williams, Keane, Baines, Schneiderlin, Gaye, Klassen is a very, very decent core to the team, and they've got some excellent youngsters. But going forward? they will be abysmal! this season. All those Coleman, Baines assists, they're gone.

Whilst I do not agree they will be in a relegation battle, I do think they'll struggle a lot more than people think. Not sure on the lad they signed from Spain but losing Lukaku and possibly Barkley is a big kick in the teeth. Rooney not the player he was. Tom Davies is some player, mind. Currently have no Everton cover but Davies could be in by this time next week. If he plays he is exceptionally well priced at 5.5.

I have him in R. I guess, from watching last night, he is going to play Seamus Colman type role? At 5.5 he could score 5 or 6 and assist 6 or more? If he concedes, not too bad as classed as mid?

Which set should I go with?

    A) Heaton, Valencia, Lacaselles, Zaha
    B) Elliot, Darmian, Rangel, Salah (leaves me with .5)
It's basically Valencia & Zaha vs. Darmian (no fit LB's at United) & Salah with rotational players involved.

Also would there be any other DEF to consider from the big teams (other than Trippier) that are 5.5 or less?

    THANKS!

    Think I've cracked it.

    DDG
    Trippier Yoshida Danilo Hegazi
    KDB Salah Fraser
    Kane Lukaku Firmino

Only risk is rotation for Firm and Salah but I think it's worth it. Liverpool will score loads. Pretty settled on this until Sanchez scores a brace in community shield ....

Think so until Mendy back. He's in my team for now.

Way I see it whether they play 4 at back or 5 he should still be favoured on the left with Mendy out. Guess Sane could compete with him for attacking wing back but can't see it.

Yes - but he was Elliott's understudy when Elliott was fit

Yes, by the sound of things at the moment.

As a side question, does anyone know what's happened to Krul?

No Liverpool or Spurs and one space in midfield for 9.5:

    A) Alli
    B) Eriksen
    C) Mane

Would you swap Lukaku for Mikhitarian?

    Sidenote:
I already have Kane atm with Lukaku up front and KDB in the middle. If I get rid of Lukaku for Jesus, I can swap KDB for Sanchez. Mikhitarian would be utd cover.

With so many Scouts planning 4-4-2 I would really like to see an article on best budget 3rd forwards ... just saying

    Hi guys
I have chosen 3 main defenders
    Trippier Daniels Yoshida

But I thought I will upgrade either Rangel or Hunemeier to a 5m Def
Any suggestions in the 5m bracket?

Or maybe a shuffle around of what I've got, I am concerned there's no Man U defender in there.
    I have 1 Man U slot available
    Cheers

Cheers for that. I had Daniels last season and just seemed decent last year with 4 goals and 3 assists and guaranteed starter.

Are there any 4.0 defenders who are starters?
