A smart finish from rising star Dominic Calvert-Lewin confirms Everton’s progress in the Europa League following a generally uneventful evening in Slovakia.

Ruzomberok 0 Everton 1 (0-2 on aggregate)

A Dominic Calvert-Lewin goal settled the second leg of Everton’s Europa League tie with Slovakian side Ruzomberok, with the Toffees now through to the competition’s play-off stage.

The England U19 international came on in the second half and finished smartly from the edge of the area after being released by Davy Klaassen.

Everton controlled a rather drab match, dominating possession and having 12 shots to their hosts’ four, but the lack of overall quality on show was demonstrated by the fact that the Toffees managed only two attempts on target.

Manager Ronald Koeman played four at the back in the first leg, but switched to a three-man defence of skipper Phil Jagielka, Ashley Williams and Michael Keane in Slovakia.

Tom Davies and Leighton Baines were used as wing-backs in a 3-5-2 formation in which Wayne Rooney and Sandro played up front, with Klaassen in the number 10 role just behind them.

Fantasy veteran Baines has consistently produced points as a left-back over the years. Should he spend time this season in a more advanced position, he could become a very attractive option indeed.

As for Davies, who managed two goals and three assists from a limited run in central midfield last year, he might struggle to repeat the feat from a wider and more defensive role. He did, however, impress, bringing an energy and verve notably lacking in Cuco Martina when he played as a right-back in the first leg.

Should Davies be utilised as a right wing-back in the continued absence of Seamus Coleman, it doesn’t look good news for the Fantasy prospects of either Martina or Mason Holgate as 4.5 options in defence.

Jordan Pickford made his debut in the Everton goal and would probably have wished for more to do as he bids to make the number one jersey his own, while up front, Rooney, Sandro and Klaassen again indulged in some nice interplay but produced little in the way of end product.

That was left to Calvert-Lewin, who replaced Sandro and played centrally, with Rooney allowed a freer role. Koeman used a similar tactic in the first match and Rooney looked more comfortable in both ties when not required to operate solely in the centre.

Whether that means Calvert-Lewin could be handed a regular role up front remains to be seen, although Koeman was quick to praise him, and hint at his future, post-match.

“Maybe Dominic feels a bit more comfortable as one of two strikers. He’s strong, he’s fast and he scored a great goal.”

His price – 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League and 7.8m in the Sky game – is classic budget third striker material, but how much pitch-time he’ll be handed is the great unknown.

What is beyond doubt is Everton’s daunting start to the domestic season. An opening day visit by Stoke City is the calm before a storm involving last year’s top three and a trip to Man United.

At least the Toffees now have two competitive matches under their belt, and they go into today’s play-off draw with another two-legged tie awaiting them on August 17 and 24.

In domestic terms, the first leg is four days prior to a Gameweek 2 trip to Manchester City, with the second leg taking place two days before a Gameweek 3 visit to Chelsea.

Progress past the play-offs and they will qualify for the group stages of European football’s most gruelling slog, throwing the risk of rotation into the mix of their squad.

Everton: Pickford; Williams, Keane, Jagielka; Davies, Schneiderlin (Barry 81), Gueye, Baines, Klaassen; Sandro (Calvert-Lewin 69), Rooney (Mirallas 86).

Subs not used: Stekelenburg, Martina, Holgate, Lookman.

Could I get some thoughts on this please? Fairly template, but solid right??

    -----------------------Foster // Elliot
    Valencia // Trippier // Cedric // Lascelles // Hunemeier
    ----KDB // Salah // Willian // Loftus-Cheek // Carroll
    --------------Kane // Lukaku // Chicharito

Maybe consider swapping cedric for yoshida, cedric might not be playing straight away. perhaps find a way to get a better 4th mid? Loftus-Cheek might not be nailed.

I'm sure this will have been said somewhere before but those wanting to get wembley tickets to watch your team against spurs, Chelsea (the 1st home game) have a ticket allocation of 3,000.

Yep that's right. Not 13 or 30 but 3,000. So be on your toes and ready for when they are released.

Happy enough with this team, but is it too balanced? Also feel uncomfortable with no Spurs or 'pool attackers:

    DDG (Elliot)
    Trips Yoshida Kolasinac Ake (Suttner)
    KDB Pog Fab (Carroll Ritchie)
    Luka Laca Chica

    Where should I improve? TIA

    hi guys,

with iheanacho going to LCFC is he going to start? I have the below dilemma

    a) Willian & jordan ayew
    b) iheanacho & can

Can isn't going to score you points! Ineacheo will play and I think he will be good bit limited supply at stoke ... coming from a ciity team who provided quality balls and had a lot more of the ball than stoke ever will. Go Willian/ fab and ayew.

Although there's surely better options than ayew? Abrahams? Not sure what his price is

    Team at the Moment
    Foster, Elliott
    Trippier, Kompany, Kolasinac, Dunk, Rangel
    Salah, Alli Willian Carroll
    Jesus, Austin.

Last midfielder and forward im torn. What's everyones thoughts ?

    A) Safer option, Lukaku and Zaha
    B) Riskier option, Lacazette and Mkitharyan

A is obviously the safer option but B gives me an attacking player from all the big 6 and Mkitharyan has been smashing it in pre season. What's his likelihood of him starting most games and is he a good enough selection to partly cover Lukaku?

    Cheers Everyone

He looks a strong option at that price.

Afternoon, guys. Your thoughts on this bunch? I will return the favour in due course ...

    Foster (Elliott)

    Lindelof Trippier Stones Daniels Rangel

    KDB Mkhitaryan Willian Ritchie Carroll

    Kane Lukaku Austin

Should I downgrade a 5.5m defender and upgrade Ritchie to Zaha?
Alternatively, a 5.5m defender to Yoshida/Cedric and Austin to Iheanacho in due course?

    Thanks.

Liverpool have a really tough draw in the champions league playoffs, Hoffenheim away between gw1&2 and at home the following week.

I have had Salah / Mane earmarked for midfield slot but the prospect of heavy rotation around these must-win European matches is making me nervous. Anybody else having second thoughts?

It is a bit of worry but I think Klopp will want to play his best team together to get them ready for those games. It might be a case of trying to guess who is more likely to be rested. Maybe Mane because he's coming back from an injury and hasn't had a full pre-season like Cout, Mo and Bobby?

They're Hoffenheim and they'll beat them. Can't pick players based on who might be rested for Euro games, cos most of the players not in teams playing in Europe will get very little points.

I don't, they've a good home record and Pool's defence is still dodgy, but I expect them to beat them.

Do you guys take into account what your ML opponents are likely to do when picking your starting squad? For example, there are lots of Liverpool fans in my ML. To me this makes it more risky to go without a Liverpool player because if they score some goals in the first couple weeks and I know for sure that my rivals will own one (or even two) of their attackers.

No. Use the old football adage. We concentrate on we can do then see where we are.

    Please choose which is better?

    A. Salah
    B. Mkhitaryan
    C. Pogba

Afraid of Liverpool CL qualification, any idea?

    Thx you.
