As announced last week, Fantasy Football Scout will be working with Yahoo Daily Fantasy Football throughout the new season.

With a scoring system that awards points for a range of player actions – all powered by the Opta data we know and love – the game looks ideally suited for our community.

To get started, you can sign up and claim a free £50 in credit to your account when you deposit just £5.

Ahead of Friday’s article focusing on player recommendations for Gameweek 1, here are our key strategies and tips for success in the Yahoo game.

Deadlines and Player Selection

As you might expect, we have a budget – this time £200 million – and are tasked with selecting an 11-man line-up.

Notably, you pick a keeper, three defenders, four midfielders and two forwards. You then have a utility slot that can cover a player of any position within your budget restrictions. This effectively allows you to deploy a 4-4-2, 3-4-3 or a 3-5-2 formation.

There are no substitutes, which means you will need to ensure that you select certain starters, or use the “late swap” feature to tailor your line-up once teamsheets are announced.

As an example, the deadline for Saturday’s £10k Contest is 3pm. This means that you can view the teamsheets for the six matches included when they are announced at 2pm and tweak your line-up accordingly. So pay close attention to deadlines and try to use the teamsheets to your advantage.

Recruiting a last-minute bargain can free up some valuable funds. It often pays to have a likely target in mind – in case of this scenario developing – so you can act fast to finalise your line-up before deadline.

Scoring Points

Analysis of Yahoo Daily Fantasy’s scoring model is key to success.

One of the first things to note is that goalkeepers earn points for draws and victories. This will clearly influence our decision-making in this position.

While cheap goalkeeping options that play for sides under the cosh will return points for saves, they will need to make seven saves to surpass a rival that keeps a clean sheet and wins the match – and that’s without the latter making a single save in the process.

The holy grail is a keeper that makes a couple of saves, wins the match and keeps a shut-out. The likes of Arsenal’s Petr Cech and Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois immediately spring to mind for Gameweek 1. Of course, you’ll pay a premium – relative to other goalkeepers – for these names.

When selecting defenders, you should note that, while they gain points for clean sheets, they are only rewarded with three, compared with a goalkeeper’s six.

Without points for saves, defenders can rely on a series of defensive actions for returns. Clearances are not factored in, but blocks and interceptions are included, as are tackles won. Even so, from our analysis, attacking actions, even for defenders, are vital to their prospects.

If we look at last season’s top Yahoo defenders for minutes per points (above), we see that five of the top six were full-backs.

There are a number of factors at play here, not least their ability to provide crosses and win corners. Full-backs are also more likely to make challenges and therefore win tackles.

Even when we look at the pure centre-backs included in the top ten, both Nathan Ake and Vincent Kompany supplement their defensive actions with some form of attacking points.

With clearances omitted from the scoring, if you’re going to go with a centre-back, you’ll need to find one who is either a monster for interceptions or blocks or, ideally, one that gets forward to provide a threat and shots on goal.

Because shots are absolutely vital in Yahoo.

It stands to reason that attacking players who take shots are more likely to score goals. However, even those who suffer a low conversion rate can prosper.

A shot is awarded with 0.5 points. If it also hits the target it gains another 2 points, with a further 0.5 points if it results in a corner. You can appreciate how this can layer up to reward those who pepper the goal.

If we look at the top ten Yahoo scorers in attacking positions, we can see that the purely creative players – Fabregas aside – are conspicuous by their absence, with shot makers and goal scorers dominant.

As an example, outside of the top ten, Swansea City’s Gylfi Sigurdsson outscored Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne.

The Belgian’s superior creativity and assist count could not see him better the Swansea playmaker. Sigurdsson scored 158 points for shots and shots on target, compared with De Bruyne’s 85 – and that proved decisive.

In short, then, we must isolate attacking players that shoot as much as possible. If they make a lot of passes, cross the ball and draw fouls then all the better.

While combative midfielders have a place in the Yahoo game, we should not expect to pay a premium for these. Indeed, they should really be seen as “enablers” to free up funds.

If we look at the minutes per points averages, one of the most successful defensive midfielders is Everton’s Idrissa Gueye. But he only achieved a point every 13.4 minutes, despite winning an impressive 50 points from tackles and 40.5 points from interceptions. Elsewhere, Arsenal pair Mohamed Elneny and Granit Xhaka won a point every 12.9 and 13.1 minutes respectively.

That can’t compete with a player providing crosses and, in particular, shooting for goal. Even those outside of the “elite” players for those metrics can prosper over a midfield destroyer.

As an example, Burnley’s Robbie Brady chipped in with a point every 10.2 minutes, while even the Clarets’ new signing Jon Walters fetched a point every 12.3 minutes while at Stoke City. Walters earned a third of his points through shots and shots on targets combined.

Player Prices

Player valuations will fluctuate weekly based on their previous performances.

Pinpointing the cheap, hidden gems with the potential to score big each week is obviously vital.

Each week our dedicated Yahoo article will attempt to unearth these players while giving you a breakdown of our primary XI for big contests in the Gameweek.

Look out for our first article this coming Friday.

wondering if i could get a hot topic to discuss this...

Are we giving the premium defs enough consideration over the mid price mids?

what i cant wrap my head around is the fact that if i switch to 5-2-3 and move Zaha and Ritchie to something like Alonso and Kolasinic, am i not bringing in players likely to score more overall?

Zaha last season - 149, Alonso last season 177
Ritchie in his last season in the PL 119, Players like Luiz/Koscielny and 6.0 defenders on other big teams comfortable eclipse that.

Based on those facts why are we not choosing the big hitting defenders like alonso/kos/bellerin/luiz/cahill/azp/kolas/kompany over average midfielders in average teams like zaha/lanzini/ritchie/willian/ramsay.

overall points wise it makes complete sense to go with the big defs. am i missing something?

Primarily because you move around mid-priced midfielders based on form and fixtures.

Zaha got 149. But if you went Zaha to Ramsey to Willian to Fabregas at the right moments you should be able to exceed the defender totals.

However, going for wing backs over midfielders is perfectly valid.

I'm pasting my response to a post on a previous page:

Without meaning to cause offence, I think it is your logic that is floored.

It's not a question of Alonso or Zaha or any of the other comparisons you make, as they play in different positions and the prices reflect that.

If we look at Kolasinac and Ritchie for example (I have both by the way), you have to take into consideration relative cost vs the others in their price bracket.

Kolasinac is above average in defender cost, whereas Ritchie is below average in midfield.

You therefore have to factor in who you would be able to afford in the opposing position and really only look at these decisions in pairs.

      For example:

      A) Alonso and Atsu
      vs
      B) Cedric and Willian

There are quite a few viable 4.5 options in defence capable of scoring well for defenders relative to the big hitters. The same can't really be said about midfield.

i understand the logic in this and i would look at them with bench fodder.
i get that a 4.5 def is somewhat better than a 4.5 mid which makes the case to go with a mid better but how often does that bench fodder really come in to your team over the year.

i simply have willian ritchie and zaha in my team right now and am playing 3-4-3.

i can move my 4.5s from def to mid and move zaha/willian/ritchie to alonso/kola/spurs etc etc, without having any impact on the rest of my starting 11. yes it impacts my bench but hopefully their use will be limited - which is why i am looking at them as pairs

      im playing 433

523 is not flexible, esp if you have 3 x 4.5m mid

The trouble is you are looking at total scores for the season for individual players. But that isn't how the game works. You don't keep players in all season, you rotate and transfer so it's the week by week score that counts. Clean sheets are more predictable than goals so rotating defenders often pays dividends.

I actually don't believe it's about rotation, it's comparative value amongst the positions.

To compare, you need to look at pairs of defenders and midfielders from last season. For example, does a 4.5 defender and 7 midfielder score more or less than a 7 defender paired with a 4.5 midfielder.

What the poster above fails to consider is who he would have in midfield were he to try and fill his team with premium defenders

its bench fodder vs bench fodder - why is it so relevant?

Because 4.5 defenders don't need to be bench fodder. They can score well as starting defenders.

4.5 midfielders pretty much (unless we are lucky) are destined for the bench.

Just because you are planning to distribute your money in this way, doesn't mean you couldn't get more points from downgrading some premium defenders and adding the money elsewhere to your starting 11.

For example, downgrading Alonso to Daniels would allow you to upgrade Austin to Firmino, or Pogba to KDB.

Regardless of whether you want your midfielders to be your bench fodder or not, the relative value of premium defenders needs to be considered.

Do you gain more points from upgrading a defender by a certain amount, or a midfielder/forward.

I am not saying you are wrong to consider a premium defence. Far from it, as I think it could well be a good plan.

What I'm saying is that you cannot simply compare a 7mil defender with a 7mil midfielder.

    My current backline's ownership:

    Cedric (14.2%), B.Smith (4.4%), Danilo (3.7%), B.Davies (2.5%) Suttner (0.8%)

Only B.Smith is a rogue FFS pick (thought I'd go for a 4.0 who may break through), everyone else crops up lots on this site. Can be an echo chamber on here, but the rest of the fantasy world are picking very different players.

Nearly there! Prioritising fixtures and hoping Kane starts slowly...

    DDG
    Kolasinac, Danilo, Yoshida, Cedric
    KDB, Alli, JWP
    Lukaku, Jesus, Firmino

    (Elliot, RLC, Carroll, Mariappa)

What would you do with the spare 0.5? Would be nice to get Willian in for JWP but Saints have fantastic fixtures...

    Cheers!

anyone else not confident on Atsu as a 4th midfielder?

Too risky for me. One bad game and Murphy could take his spot. Also very likely to be subbed early.

Not really, would rather have Fraser or JWP

Not for me. I've punted on Walters. Risky I know, but most are in that range.

Hi guys, we've just finished our non-draft format FPL draft (i.e. still have prices and use regular squad rules). Care to rank the teams 1 to 5?

    A) Kane / Chicharito / Benteke
    Alli / Salah / Redmond / Loftus-Cheek / Stephens
    Walker / Alonso / Bertrand / Aké / Lindelof
    Begovic / Gomes

    B) Defoe / Rodriguez / Iheanacho
    KDB / Hazard / Eriksen / Pogba / Carroll
    Danillo / Alderweireld / Cedric / Mee / Stephens
    De Gea / Elliot

    C) Aguero / Firmino / Gayle
    Sanchez / Sigurdsson / Zaha / Wijnaldum / McArthur
Cahill / Milner / Daniels / Rangel / Brad Smith
    Hart / Myhill

    D) Jesus / Lacazette / Gabbiadini
    Ozil / Mhikitaryan / Pedro / Willian / Ritchie
    Trippier / Yoshida / Lejeune / Marriappa / Kolisanac
    Foster / Federici

    E) Morata / Vardy / Lukaku
Mane / Barry / Atsu / David Silva / Fabregas
    Bailly / Lowe / Valencia / Tomkins / Fuchs
    Pickford / Fabianski

Kane -> Jesus allows so many options for me...ugh... decisions, decisions.

Ok, think I'm all set. Will upgrade Willian once Hazard is back, I've tried loads of teams with Lukaku / Jesus / Kane up top, but its just too weak everywhere else. Is begovic nailed? liked him the most out of all the 4.5 keepers.

    Begovic / Elliot
    Bertrand / Daniels / Danilo / Mee / Long
    KDB / Willian / Zaha / Ritchie / Carroll
    Kane / Lukaku / Firmino

    Any feedback would be great.

Anybody doubling up on Saints defence to make the most of the fixtures?

Thinking Cedric and Bertrand, or is it wiser for Monreal and spread the love?

    Good day

The draft below has not changed in quite sometime.

    Foster
    Cedric / Danilo / Monreal
    Salah / Can / KDB / Willian / Zaha
    Lukaku / Kane

Sub: Myhill / Mitrovic / Francis / hunemeir

    -------------------------------------

Please note the Can inclusion is due to the absence of Lallana. My understanding is that he will be playing in the RCM slot with henderson holding.

I'm going for Foster but only because he's so cheap. I think the WBA defence is overrated.

Dawson here. Only because of goal threat.
