We draw the curtain on our summer series of team-by-team analysis articles for members by dropping in on West Ham United.

Initially, we assess the performance levels on a team basis in an attempt to spot trends or improvements.

We then dig deeper into the player data, analysing the key individuals as we scour for early targets ahead of Friday’s Gameweek 1 deadline.

We’ll also highlight the Hammers’ displays in light of Dimitri Payet’s decision to return to former club Marseille midway through the campaign, in order to assess the impact of the Frenchman’s departure.

The Hammers thrived in Payet’s only full season at the club in 2015/16. He pulled the strings as they claimed seventh position, scoring 65 times (a tally bettered by only three other sides) and earning 62 points.

But last season was a pale imitation of that campaign. With Payet leaving the club midway through the campaign, Slaven Bilic’s men netted on just 47 occasions and limped home in eleventh position on 45 points – just five clear of seventeenth placed Burnley.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

I like this tactic but only to an extent. It's for coverage and safety in GW1, but dominant players from smaller clubs outperform the passing players of the big teams.

Stick or twist? 4-4-2, not much of a bench expected - at least until the WC.

Alonso | Kompany | Yoshida | Francis (Hunemeier)
KdB | Pogba | Willian | Zaha (Carroll)

My thinking of going for Mkhi instead of Lakaku.

No Lukaku enables Jesus. For sure keeping Kane. But I want 2 City attacking players. KDB obviously, but other midfielders at greater risk of rotation than Jesus.
Mkhi is good value, and will likely be the second highest player up the pitch going by the Madrid game. He was basically a number 10 when United were attacking. Played every (?) / most pre-season games and feel this could be big season for him.

    1. Prison Mike
      • 10 Years

I really like Mkhi as a pick as well but I prefer Lukaku to begin with even more than Kane, plus almost half of the game owns Lukaku

      1. Slippy
        • 9 Years

Sure. But City will score more goals than United and this feels like the only way to get a City mid and attacker.

He will play a lot but he isn't nailed like pogba. I think he will likely rotate with mata? When he plays he could score big so could be a net win over pog but I'm not risking him. Luka is enough utd for me right now

    Final RMT before tomorrow:

    Foster Elliot
    Kolasinac Yoshida Ake Mee Rosenior
    KDB Eriksen Zaha Ritchie TC
    Kane Lukaku Mounie

    Points I have considered:
    - I'm not sure there's much value/difference in getting DDG, Forster or even a 4.5 GK alternating pair. Foster should be decent, Elliot ok'ish if he remains/starts.
    - Not fond of going too heavy on defense, value lies with mids/forwards in my humble opinion. Kola seems a good option with both attacking returns and CS possibilities. I had to get someone from Southampton's defense, Forster and Bertrand a tad expensive, both Yoshida and Stephens did well last season, chose the former. I also had Ake before he went back to Chelsea, served me well and liked the guy, was a 50/50 really with Daniels. Mee is a loyal pick for his price. Rosenior for fodder (other possibilities too for 4.0).
    - Will stay clear of Liverpool mids for now, the conundrum is too much, points will probably be shared this year too.
    - I reckon KDB is a steal with 10.0, nailed and excellent player, should at least produce last season's 200 points. Eriksen, my most favourite, picked him last season and stuck with him, nailed and steady produce (Alli is of course a great pick too). I believe Zaha will perform slightly better, nailed and a good pick. Ritchie also seems a good and cheap option, while TC is a favourite around here. Obviously with this mid I'm expecting a lot of assists, some goals, good performances and nailedness. Time will tell.
    - Kane and Lukaku should provide a goal galore and I'll stick with them. Lacazette also a great option, but I'd like to see how he does first. Also not sure on the Jesus/Aguero dilemma and who's going to edge it. Firmino/Benteke/Vardy/Rooney/Defoe are all of course good options for 3rd striker, but don't have the funds. So, Mounie will have to do for now, not the best option, will be the one to monitor for me and may switch to Abraham if need be.

That's all from me, new season is going to be nothing but exciting. Good luck to everyone!
