Maybe it’s the blue blood, but I don’t recall ever having a strong first half to the season and I was well outside the top 100k in the FPL game at this point last year. I always manage it turn it round somehow; a lot of it is blind luck of course but as more and more casual players begin to lose interest and take up more sensible hobbies like going to the gym or talking to their girlfriends, it always seems that bit easier in the second half of the season.

With the tactic of jumping on bandwagons to build team value becoming less and less relevant, it’s time to focus on picking the players we like regardless of whether everyone else is buying them – call me a romantic but I believe it’s the “Differentials” of this world that keep this game interesting……

Steven Gerrard

It seems bizarre that we can be talking about Steven Gerrard in this article but with an ownership of just 1.9% and a marked absence from the numerous wildcard teams being thrown around, Liverpool’s DJ-hating midfielder is almost the definition of a “Differential” right now; very low ownership, a reasonable price and the potential to unleash a huge score on his unsuspecting opposition.

It was only three years ago that Steven Gerrard amassed 216 points in the FPL game; his 16 goals and 10 assists made him an essential pick and the massive number of transfers in during the season saw his price soar to an eye watering 12.5. A lack of form and fitness and a succession of injuries has seen Gerrard fall out of favour amongst the Fantasy masses in recent times, but now that he’s started to shows signs of his old form, his current price of just 10.5 looks like strong value.

After picking up a goal against Newcastle the day before New Years Eve, Gerrard continued his return to fitness by starting his first full game and scoring the only goal in the 1-0 victory over Man City on Wednesday. With Luis Suarez absent for another four league games, Gerrard will be expected to help out in attack wherever possible and we’re backing him to make a big impact over the coming weeks, starting against Stoke.

Darren Bent

Another strange choice for the “Differentials” considering his past form, but Darren Bent’s injuries problems this season has seen his ownership drop to a season low of just 4.0% and a price of 9.6. With an appealing fixture against an injury ravaged Everton side up next, we’re expecting the Villa striker to pick up where he left off last season, when he slotted past Tim Howard twice at Goodison.

Everton’s injury problems have become so bad in recent weeks that when Sylvain Distin limped off at White Hart Lane, he was replaced by Shane Duffy, a player that until Thursday morning wasn’t even listed on the FPL site. The Youngster actually did ok but with Phil Jagielka definitely out and Distin a major doubt, Alex Mcleish will surely abandon his defensive tactics at home and go on the attack against such a weakened Everton side. Barring a last minute injury, Darren Bent will be leading the line and represents Villa’s best chance of attacking points in what is historically a high scoring game between the two teams, so could be a nice option if funds can stretch that far.

Hatem Ben Arfa

The departure of Demba Ba to the African Cup of Nations is expected to provide a timely boost to Newcastle’s unsettled Frenchman, whose extraordinary solo goal against Blackburn threw him right back into the limelight last weekend.

Ben Arfa hasn’t started a league game since the last time he made the differentials in Gameweek 14, but now that he is seemingly fully fit once again, we’re confident that this time round, he can start to put a run of games together. Where he will be deployed is open to debate; his preferred position would probably be tucked in behind the striker but a place out wide is probably the most likely considering how well he played against Blackburn. Regardless of where Pardew chooses to play him, if he’s on the pitch then he’ll be involved and the potential is there for a bumper score if Newcastle can put together another big performance.

It’s always a lottery which way a side can go when a new manager takes over, but QPR boss Mark Hughes will have his work cut out and Newcastle look too strong right now. We’re backing a home win here then, and with an ownership of just 1.4% in the FPL game and a bargain price of just 5.4, Ben Arfa could be a key player and major differential for those who take the punt.

Should I play Simpson ahead of Sess (I have Krul on the bench)?

Sess away to Chelsea. Simpson at home to QPR. I'd go for the latter. In fact I have benched Sess, but will play him for their other upcoming matches.

Yeah i want to. I'm thinking possibly Jones -> Richards and Walters -> Barfa just for this week and then when i WC either next week or week after get walters back and try grab either Aguero or Rooney for Ade and Sturridge for Morrison. Also Howard -> mignolet and a few other on my mind. What you reckon?

    Sorensen
    Richards - Enrique - BAE
    Nani - Drenthe - Silva - Bale
    RVP - Adebayor - Sturridge

Subs: Vorm, Simpson, Walters, N Taylor

Do my subs look alright, in your opinion? Feel my starting 11 is pretty average compared with those who've wildcarded this week. Does it look strong in general though?
The doubts are Drenthe and Silva and 2 not so good fixtures for my goalies. However it's not enough to make me need a wildcard i'd say. Your thoughts?

    Wishlist for the gameweek:

    - 0-0 in the Liverpool game
    - RVP Hattrick
    - Nani to outscore Valencia
    - Newcastle to concede

Your team looks awesome considering you haven't WC'd yet! It's not that much different to my current WC team.

Simpson is a very useful first sub if he's available. I think Newcastle will keep a CS.
Walters might have a hard game, but you never know, a penalty to the opposition at Anfield does happen once in a blue moon. N. Taylor is a wise 3rd sub as Swansea will surely concede.

Thanks everyone. It's appreciated. Looks like the consensus is to go with Simpson over Drenthe. Have a bad feeling about Newcastle without Tiote though. Simpson will either play 90 or 0. I think i'll go with my heart and hope for a Drenthe start at the weekend. Fancy him to get something off the bench, even if he doesn't start though. Was 1 wrong decision away from picking up potentially 3 extra points v Spurs.

I've just about finished my Wildcard tinkering I think, but I have one last thing that I'm tempted to change. Do I replace Sessegnon (my 3rd sub for GW21) with McClean, to allow me to upgrade Valencia to Nani?

I would be tempted to bring Sessegnon back in for GW22 as a starter, replacing Nani.

            Does it seem sensible?

            This is my current team:

            Krul.
Richards. Assou-Ekotto. Jose Enrique. Evans J.
            Valencia. Silva. Bale.
            Van Persie. Yakubu. Rooney(c).

Subs: Mignolet. Ben Arfa. Santon. Sessegnon.

Going out on a limb this week and playing the WC:

    Vorm Ruddy
    Simpson Enrique BAE (Kompany McAuley)
    Valencia Bale Mata Gerrard Dempsey
    Sturridge Yak (Morison)

Im not big into the idea of acquiring expensive forwards. Usually like to stack the midfield and see what happens...although the no RVP this year has hurt a bit. Finished top 1300 last year (top 60 US).

My WC looks like this :

Krul/Mignolet : Perfect Rotation till the end plus Mignolet is great with easy Sunderland fixtures.

Evans-Williamson-Hanley-(Caulker-Kelly)-Cheap yet mostly reliable defense. Evans is obviously prone to rotation, and Kelly is not a nailed on starter so its kind of a risk, but one I hope works.

Gerrard-Lampard-Bale-Valencia-Mclean-Gerrard is on a renaissance, Lampard is trying to prove his critics wrong, Valencia is extremely consistent, Bale is man in form and Mclean is the cheap and extremely potential candidate with the fixtures in hand.

Torres-Aguero-?? : Its been a year, and if there ever was a time for Torres to shine, then its got to be now, its a risky differential but one that might and I have a feeling will work. Aguero is just too good a player not to have.

Now, the Dilemma is with the 3rd striker, i've got 7.5 mn in the bank and I cant decide b/w Sturridge, Agbanlahor, Bendter, Zamora, Welbeck, Odemwingie, Crouch or HENRY (basically too many options) so suggestions? (and yes, I did remove RVP)

No harm in having one non-playing stock player as 3rd sub. Especially consider that I have two decent subs ahead of him in the pecking order.

as my midfield is filled with 5 class players, post-WC. So I had to sacrifice one of my strikers. I now have RVP and Yakubu as my strikers, with no back up striker, which is compensated by my resoundingly attacking team.

    My current team:

    Krul.
Richards. Assou-Ekotto. Jose Enrique. Evans J.
    Valencia. Silva. Bale.
    Van Persie. Yakubu. Rooney(c).

Subs: Mignolet. Ben Arfa. Santon. Sessegnon.

I'm really struggled to know who to start and who to bench.
I really wanted to play Ben Arfa but I don't who to replace!

I know that Silva is still a doubt but I expect him to play most of the Wigan game.
Johnny Evans may also miss out this weekend, so at least there are two decent players who could come off my bench for them.

Any of you kind folk, care to give some advice? Who would you bench out of that lot?

After a disastrous DGW the trigger finger is a little itchy... although saying that I want to leave the WC as long as possible and have decided not to use it until next week maybe...

I'm thinking of using my free transfer this week to transfer out "Osman Uber Fail" for Ben Arfa...

Can you guys look at my team and reassure me that I'm making the right decision... It's so tempting to use the WC to rearrange my team and have a punt on Stevie G...

Do NOT bench Ben Arfa, he's the flavour of the week! Play him over one of the United defenders imo.. The decision will be taken out of your hands id Jones doesn't play anyway but I would spread the risk and start HBA..

Why have him, if you don't start him for QPR at home when he looks set to play!

So after posting 4-5 identical posts worded differently cos no-one will reply to your posts.. You get one reply and this is your response?

So what is your rank anyway so I know if I'm worthy enough to reply to your questions..?

you could wait a while for Jones and take a chance on him, but Kompany to Richard seems a good move too just depend on how much budget are you looking to loose over the transfer Richard could rise more if he do some damage too.
