Our Watchlist player rankings – listing would-be mid-term targets – were revised earlier this week following Gameweek 1.

These can be found in your sidebar on desktop, or via your slide-in menu on mobile or tablet.

They effectively collate our current thinking on player selection for each position, listing the factors that are contributing to the given rank.

When viewing, it’s important to bear in mind the “rules” at play, particularly when it comes to “coverage”. While Harry Kane sits high in the forward rankings, this can dent the appeal of both Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli as midfield options. Similarly, if a goalkeeper looks to be the go-to method of covering a defence, this will be reflected in the ranking assigned to their defenders.

As a rule, we try to force ourselves to commit to one player per position per club. However, in some circumstances – when we consider it viable, and maybe even advisable, to double up – two players will be listed.

Right now, with just a single Gameweek to consider, form has not played a major role in the rankings. This will kick in once we have three to four Gameweeks to analyse. However, in some cases – should a striker score a hat-trick for example – we will start reflecting this in the factors shown.

In general, there have been few seismic changes following the opening weekend.

In goal, we’ve promoted West Brom’s Ben Foster to the summit in light of Newcastle United’s defensive injuries that limit Rob Elliot’s budget potential.

Huddersfield Town’s Jonas Lossl is the biggest climber on show after his impressive haul in the shut-out of Crystal Palace.

West Ham’s Joe Hart also experiences a slight climb, despite the Hammers’ Old Trafford drubbing. Their fixtures improve radically very soon, with their prospects gradually improving as each of the first three away matches are ticked off. Hart, at just 4.5, is currently the cheapest secure route into Slaven Bilic’s backline.

In defence, we have chosen to topple Manchester United’s Antonio Valencia, with Phil Jones currently offering strong value at just 5.0.

Victor Lindelof is clearly set to be eased into action by Jose Mourinho, so Jones looks destined for a run in the United rearguard – while he remains fit, of course.

He ranks high, though Southampton’s Ryan Bertrand – with his ridiculously favourable early schedule – is elevated to top spot.

Lower down, Arsenal’s Sead Kolasinac is a climber following his impressive Gameweek 1 debut, while John Stones is our current candidate in Man City’s defence – at least while we can assess how Pep Guardiola intends to rotate at wing-back.

In midfield, we’ve elected to keep faith with Kevin De Bruyne for now, although he is under real threat from the buoyant Mo Salah, along with the Spurs pair Eriksen and Alli, who both recorded returns in Gameweek 1.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan is a climber and gets the nod over Paul Pogba as our weapon of choice in the Man United midfield. The option to double on Jose Mourinho’s attack looks far more favourable following Sunday’s impressive dismantling of West Ham.

Mkhitaryan’s lot is improved by the injury to Wilfried Zaha, with the Crystal Palace winger reportedly set to be sidelined for up to four weeks. We await confirmation from Palace, although as it stands, Zaha’s transfer traffic is only heading one way.

A dearth of obvious replacements – with Willian likely to come under threat from a fit-again Eden Hazard – also boosts Mkhitaryan’s prospects.

Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey is another 7.0 option who is yet to establish steady stock. Benched against Leicester City, the Welshman is not assured of his start at Stoke City in Gameweek 2.

Gylfi Sigurdsson makes his first appearance in our thinking following confirmation of his move to Everton. He enters low thanks to the Toffees’ abhorrent set of fixtures over the next four Gameweeks. However, clearly, the Icelander is set to rise up our rankings as those next four encounters are ticked off.

In attack, Romelu Lukaku’s explosive Premier League debut for United saw him leapfrog Harry Kane at the top.

The Spurs striker needs to find a response against Chelsea in Gameweek 2 to hold off the claims of Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus; the Brazilian is preferred to the Sergio Aguero option, despite his blank at the Amex Stadium.

Under this, there are climbs for Roberto Firmino, Jamie Vardy and Alexandre Lacazette after impressive Gameweek 1 performances.

However, they seem likely to struggle to break into the top three, unless Kane and Jesus continue to falter.

Huddersfield Town’s Steve Mounie is promoted as our budget option of choice, though Burnley’s Sam Vokes also climbs having matched his opening day brace.

The likes of Javier Hernandez, Jay Rodriguez and Jermain Defoe are yet to fire, but will have their opportunity to climb in our reckoning following Gameweek 2.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    (4-3-3)

    Foster (Elliot)

    Jones / Stephens / Daniels /Mee (Mbemba)

    KDB Willian Matic (Mooy) (Carroll)

    Lukaku(c) Firmino Kane

Would prefer to go 3-4-3 and start with Mooy but don't know which def, if any, to drop, as they all have good chance of a clean sheet this weekend IMO...

Goal threat is a better option than assists. Mooy plays a bit too deep for my liking. More matches should give us more information.

I believe Mooy might be on penalties which increases his goal threat. He is an assist and baps sort of guy though. 5.5m can't go wrong.

Mooy is key to the way HUD play. I dont know if it will translate well to FPL, but there's a good chance it will. His deliveries into the box are brilliant. Should be good value

    RE: Draft

Is it worth swapping Trippier for Jones (or someone else who has a good chance of a clean sheet) but running the risk of someone scooping up Trippier? I already have Davies. Or even swapping out Koscielny?

    Looking at clean sheet potentials.

    Heaton (Foster)
Stones / Davies / Stephens (Koscielny / Trippier)

Swansea's midfield let the team down, imo. The defenders, especially Fernandez, were great. It says something that Southampton only had two shots on target, despite have 20+ shots the whole game.

Crazy numbers. I'm seriously consideding jumping on this week as I much prefer him to the 7.0's on offer.

It would involve a JWP to RLC downgrade though.

Thing about the draft, be careful with dumping good assets. Once they're gone they won't come back. We can only play 11 a week, use the bench to save. (Zaha & Cesc bencher here)

I have him and wouldn't count him as coverage particularly. Fantastic for price yes but if you want in on the majority of City's points you want Aguero or Jesus.

I'm happy I avoided Zaha pre-season, but I wish I didn't have to read about him here 24/7. This is one of those occasions that illustrates how the hot topic system here can fail to cure a problem.

Each team is a different situation. The hot topics also saved many questions.

I don't think many asking these Zaha questions have looked at the Hot Topic. The Hot Topic is hidden since by default only the comments tab is displayed, and so people just fire away a question out of impatience/anxiety/general cluelessness without looking at the Hot Topics. I think it would may be help to have the Hot Topics always visible between the Comments and Fixture Ticker or something like that.

Watched Atsu vs tottenham and he looked pretty fantastic. That being said I noticed he had more sub appearances than starts last season. Any Newcastle fans on here care to elaborate why that was so? Cheers

    Hello DZ..

Going forward in a draft league, would you lose any of Gabbiandini, Benteke or Andre Gray for either Mounie or Vokes?

Mounie's appealing but I also already have Ince + Lowe..

Might be tempted by Gray te Vokes seeing how wat are only playing 1 striker atm

Would keep Gabbi and Tekkers for now. Would easily swap out Gray. For me, I'd grab Vokes if you have 2 Hudders already

I went Mooy and banked the cash. Hopefully no injuries in the next two will mean 2ft and 1.5m in the bank to tweak over international break. I'd be happy to make four trades for a -8, somewhat of a mini wildcard.

Reason I don't want 2 5.5's, I'd like to keep a mid-range spot open for the likes of Antonio or maybe even an 8, not too tricky to do from 7, but hellish from 5.5

Nobody knows who will score exactly. No matter how good you are at this game at the end of the day there is plenty of luck involved. I thought about Rambo also for a long time but in the end I went Mooy and also sold Gabbi and got Firmino. I don't mind taking hits especially early on.

Hmm, I didn't start off with any 7m mids, so got a bit lucky. You convinced about Rambo? Think he does well when they get really desperate for goals. If Arsenal is comfortably in the lead, he's usually not one to return. And then there's him missing tons of chances too. Of the 7m mids, Mr. Ayew serious caught my eye against United. They were horrendous in general and well worth staying away from for a game or two, but he had a couple of chances with only DDG to beat. Also, loves hauling away from home, that fella.

Rambo? Looks his ideal position in a 3-4-2-1, in front of the DM and in that space surrounded by all the talent to run into space. 7m punt? Yeah, nice mid-range platform to go up the food chain too.

Not sure what all the fuss is about Atsu. I saw the game last week and he was ok... Now Siggi is gone I think that makes Carroll way more important. I'd start him over Atsu. No United would worry me a bit too.

No united is a worry indeed, but I am not going to take a hit to fix that this week. My plan was to rotate Atsu and TC, and this week's fixture suggest to play Atsu. I don't see Swansea scoring against united.
