Swansea’s fine 3-2 win over Arsenal concludes the weekend action, leaving tomorrow evening’s clash between Wigan and City as the only unfinished business in the Gameweek. Time then, for us to extract the key statistics from our Members area and make a stab at the destination of the Fantasy Premier League bonus points…

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I must say Dyer's returns of 10 10 and prob 13 have been some of my sweetest, most undeserved points of the season! I just never got round to binning him!

Here's another looooong post - "When to WC". Just systematically going through my thinking when I decided which GW to WC - hope it helps you decide too if you haven't already. If you have another WC remaining, disregard this.

    CRITERIA
Since the wildcard grants unlimited transfers until the GW deadline, the timing of it is a compromise of 6 factors:

    TEAM-DEPENDENT FACTORS
    A) How many transfers do you need to make?
    B) How many transfers might you need to make after your WC?
    C) How many points will you lose while waiting for it? (if at all)
    D) How many points will you gain from using it? (if at all)

    TEAM-INDEPENDENT FACTORS
    E) How much information do you have?
    F) How much time do you have to trade players for profit?

    APPLICATION
Currently like many I have quite a few United, Spurs and Arsenal players and also some poor sods who play for Everton. Given the big clashes this GW and Everton's form, let's consider if I went for this GW. The answer to A and C would seem to be LOTS and LOTS.

At the same time if I specifically WCed against those three clubs I would obviously at some point want to bring some of them back later, making the answer to B LOTS. I would possibly gain points over that GW and even the next 3 perhaps. But I wouldn't be set up for the long term and there's have an opportunity cost - I wouldn't be able to respond to new trends because I'd be busy making these enforced transfers. So the answer to D is NOT SO MUCH.

Information. The longer you wait in January the more information you gain regarding transfers, injuries, suspensions, true form (think McClean) and the considerable list of big players returning from injury. So the answer to E would be NOT AS MUCH AS GW23/24. But for information GW23 is even better than GW24 because the GW starts just before the transfer window closes, and you know the team sheets for Chelsea, Arsenal, United, City and Liverpool!

Time. That's where the final factor F comes into play - the break before GW23 is 10 days whereas it's only 3 for GW24. That's a whole week less to chase profit in a GW. Price changes could well be turbulent in GW23 because that's when the fixtures turn and thus the players turn.

    CONCLUSION
So I've gone for GW23. Yes, I may well have a crap week this GW. But it's a marathon, not a sprint - and I'm choosing the 16 other GWs over the coming one.

Just a final thing - GW23 is not necessarily the best for you because factors A, B, C and D are team-dependent. If you are set up well and don't need to make many transfers, you could wait til the end. Alternatively, if your team is horrible you could do it now. But GW23 looks like the best compromise. Suck it and see.

I think my main wildcard choice will be the classic choice between stars and scrubs and having a completely balanced team that has the potential to annoy me with points from the bench. This is nowhere near finished but for instance:

    Vorm Krul
    Richards Evans Enrique Cahill Senderos/Kelly
    Silva Bale Dempsey Sessegnon Dyer
    RVP Adebayor Sturridge

    OR

    Vorm Krul
    Richards Evans Enrique Cahill BAE/Dawson
    Bale Demspey Sessegnon Walters Cabaye
    RVP Adebayor Sturridge

The second one would be better if Evans gets dropped or Richards/Cahill are rested but has the potential to annoy me when the person I bench due to harder fixtures inevitably outscores the guy I play. How is everyone else approaching their WC?

I tend to agree, double United defence that I've only just noticed, Bosingwa is in there, Given will bite you, Villa don't keep many Cs and he doesn't make enough saves to compensate (unlike Hennessey). You'll be playing Walters every week, which is 2 points each away game. Forwards are ok

a bit of perspective for arsenal's loss today.
at rb they had their 4th choice right back, at lb they had their 5th choice left back, and when everyone is fit mertesacker is 3rd choice centre back.

I really think the full backs are whats letting us down at the moment. Djourou offers nothing going forwards and isnt comforable with his positioning. Miquel tried hard to get forwards but let himself down with some pretty poor delivery. This takes away a lot of the pressure on tdhe opponents defence and invites them forwards. Makes you realise how important Sagna was.

I still don't understand why Arsenal didn't bite the bullet in the summer and buy a Cahill or Samba type centre back. It was clear they needed it (and still do). Arsenal, despite their injuries have not bought well at all imo.

Ha! Yeah thought my reference to a "Cahill or Samba" type cb, means I was clearly excluding Mertesacker! Verm, and Koscielny, whilst good on paper, will probably only ever play about 5 games together a season! Mertesacker always felt like a "look, I bought a defender" from Wenger.

I'm not an Arsenal fan, so no consigning here. Just my observation from his 20 games that he looks slow, clumsy, and isn't reading the game very well. Wenger almost certainly had the option to buy a proven premier league defender in the summer, but didn't.

Mignolet is good as long as he stays but check his rotation with Vorm. I'd have Skrtel over Enrique, but it's really neither here nor there. it's a better team, but why keep Ferguson when you have 1 million in the bank and you could get someone WHO ACTUALLY PLAYS, or even just get McLean in for him and go BAE or Cahill - Richards/Kompany

According to the figures Richards looks more likely to rise tonight. I reckon he's as likely to rise by .2 as BAE tbh.

What are you looking at? BAE over 4000 transfers in today, Richards just 829. BAE has a much better chance of the second rise.

Thoughts on the Cabaye injury? I think he went off to save face after his embarassing behavior.

It's funny seeing all the Rooney owners on here arguing that Rooney "deserves" the assist, even if it's not strictly in line with the rules of the game.

I seem to recall a certain Rooney assist in the 8-2 Arsenal game where he crossed into the box, ball got cleared by a defender to Young, who then curled the ball in from outside the box. Where were all the Rooney owners then to argue whether he "deserved" the assist?

To me, rules are rules. Black and white. There's no such thing as whether an assist is "deserved", cos that brings in a huge degree of subjectivity. Did Young himself "deserve" his two assists for tapping the ball to Rooney then in that 8-2 match?

"These undeserved assist points to slight touches that have no direct influence on the goals are a flaw in the rules and a detriment on an otherwise great game."

You both disagree I take it?

The assist rule is flawed- I agree. But it's just not possible to have a perfect rule anyway. But despite its flaws, the current rule is still more objective than what you're proposing.

What next? Change the rules for goals to rule out "undeserved goals"? e.g a player does an awesome chip over the keeper, the ball is goal bound but the gets tapped in by someone else on the line to make sure of the goal. Are you going to give the goal to the guy who made the initial chip simply cos he did all the hard work and created the goal?

How is it ridiculous? Same theory mate. Last touch gets the goal. Just like how last touch gets the assist.

How do you determine whether someone "deserves" an assist without adding subjectivity into the process?

The current rule- whilst flawed- is still objective. In any case, does it really make sense for Rooney owners to be blaming the rule as part of their argument? You take the good with the bad- can't have it both ways mate.

Don't want it both ways. All I was saying was that in these cases, where there is no clear cut evidence to take it away, and it was the key pass that led to the goal, it deserves to be upheld as an assist. If there was clear evidence that it touched Wellbeck, fair enough, but it still a flawed system that could do with fixing.

What about the second assist then? Thoughts? You reckon it's still an assist?

I also recall Aguero losing an assist in dubious circumstances too against Arsenal I think (for a Silva goal). That's no different to Rooney's assists imo.

Morning everyone, 3 red arrows in a trot and so I come for your expert advises 🙂

    Team is,

    Vorm, Ruddy
    Jones, Jevans, Clark, Naylor, Simpson
    Silva, Nani, VDV, Bale, Moses
RVP, Ade, Studge - On wc and 0.7 in the bank

    1. Plan to sell Ade/Nani for Aguero/Dempsey, decent move?
    2. VDV for ??
    3. Any suggestion to replace Jones, Jevans and Clark? Which cheapos rotates well? Plan to get Kompany once he's back.

    Any thoughts appreciated 😀

Sunderland and Newcastle rotate pretty well so that could be an option. YOu should get a Sunderland GK/DEF for the next 2 games, clean sheet potential

I think so. Swansea and Fulham don't rotate well though, you may have to play them both but if you're okay with 4 defenders for some weeks, then it's good

Considering you're getting rid of Nani, I'd get Valencia for VDV. That's what I think I'll do anyway. This is expert advice from someone who's had 9 red arrows in 11 weeks. Caveat emptor!

Ouch thats gotta hurt mate 😡

Haven't been watching alot of United but people here seems to dig Valencia although he sometimes play reverse oop. Guess Nani and Rooney aren't consistent enough for their prices 😕

But yeah id still like a United cover and Valencia seems to be enough. Thanks for the shout.

Thankfully none of them have been catastrophic but I'm starting to forget what a green arrow looks like.

United are slowly getting defenders back so I'd be surprised if he's at right back anytime soon.

Valencia could easily have had 2 or 3 assists yesterday, looks very sharp. Looks more likely than Nani at the moment and imo Nani is definitely not worth 2.5 million more even if he does score a few more points in the end.

You'd be climbing up the ranking again with that team 🙂 also like the Gerrard punt.

Yeah I might go with Valencia afterall in the wc team. Probably like Ramires, kinda cheap and effective.

What do you reckon with the Ade/Nani to Kun/Dempsey transfer?

That is the money making team! Probably won't stick with that at all. I'm not sure about whether I'll keep Gerrard or not at the moment. Aguero shall be coming in so there will be changes.

When I actually finalise my WC team I will have done that exact transfer so I clearly like it! I'm sick of Ade and there's better value out there. I'm a huge Dempsey fan in FPL terms, only worry is the lack of returns since Zamora's return.

Final team will probably look something like this:

              Sorenson/Schwarzer

              Senderos, Kompany, Simpson, Caulker, TBD

Dempsey, Valencia, Bale, Walters, McLean. (Might try and work Silva/Gerrard in)

              Fletcher, RVP, Aguero
