The time has come to roll out our regular post-Gameweek members’ article and check up on some of the stand-out performers across the most recent round of fixtures.

Much of our focus turns to midfield, where Arsenal, Man City and Everton’s big hitters finally hint at the form of last season.

West Ham and Newcastle’s budget strikers also catch the eye, while defenders from Man City and Bournemouth shrug off slow starts to make significant bids for our attention.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    FOSTER | Fabianski
    BERTRAND | DANIELS | Naughton | Mee | GOLDSON
    Hazard | RITCHIE | JESE | BRADY | Carroll
    Kane | Kun | JESUS

Would you WC the above team to the below team?

    ELLIOT | Fabianski
    DAVIES | CEDRIC | Naughton | Mee | MBEMBA
    Hazard | STERLING/REDMOND | ATSU | CHOUPO | Carroll
    Kane | Kun | VARDY/JESUS

Basically, I just want to downgrade a few players in mid and attack to strengthen the defense a little bit.

    My WC team, any thoughts?

    Elliot / Pope
    Otamendi / Bavies / Luiz / Ward / Mbemba
    Hazard / Silva / Richarlison / Fellaini / Carroll
    Kane / Jesus / Vardy

Defence and attack looking good but not so much the mid. But you do have to sacrifice somewhere

  3. Wildcard Formation Strategy

With so many wildcards active I’m going to share some of my current thoughts with you…
I guess a lot of you have to make some similar decisions.

There have been a lot of managers who already switched away from the classic 3-4-3 formation.
A main reason for this is that there aren’t really any cheap strikers and midfielders constantly delivering points, while in past seasons we have had the likes of Mahrez, King, Vardy, Kane, Alli, Sigurdsson and Austin.

In opposite there’re several, better value defenders scoring constantly well.

For me that gives us the following team structure possibilities:

    1) 4-3-3 (3 expensive mids)
    Fabianski / Elliot
    5.5-6.0, 5.0, 4.5-5.0, 4.5 / 4.5
    Eriksen, Coutinho, Silva / 4.5, 4.5
    Kane, Jesus, Vardy

This formation gives the advantage being able to ignore the mid price options (5.0-7.0) in midfield and attack altogether.
There is Vardy and several midfielders you can easily downgrade to upgrade elsewhere if some must have player emerges.
    Looks very flexible.
The downside with this line-up are probably the two 4.5 cheapies who are nearly useless (same goes for all further line-ups with the 2x 4.5 double-pivot) and a bit of a reduced group of premium options at the back.
It’s very difficult to include any Chelsea players for their great run of fixtures in this formation.

Lukaku doesn’t feature in any of these line-ups because many are ditching him on the wildcard, for the chance he gets outscored over the next four (liv, hud, TOT, che).

    2) 4-3-3 (2 expensive mids)
    Fabianski / Elliot
Azpilicueta, Davies, Stones, Jones / 4.5
    Eriksen, Silva, Choupo-Moting / 4.5, 4.5
    Kane, Jesus, Vardy

Similar to the one before with the difference being a sub 6.0 mid in place of Coutinho.
This could again lead to a long search for the best pick in this price bracket.
Transfers like Fraser > Mooy > Brady > Ritchie > Richarlison > Choupo-Moting > Shaqiri… and so on could follow (same for all line-ups with a mid priced midfield option).
In exchange for Coutinho, the defence looks far better here, including Spurs, City and Chelsea assets.
Upgrades further up the pitch could be more difficult (beside downgrading Azpilicueta) because the money is spread on more defenders.

    3) 4-3-3 (Top heavy)
    Fabianski / Elliot
    Luiz, Davies, 5.0, 4.5 / 4.5
    Eriksen, Silva, Choupo-Moting / 4.5, 4.5
    Kane, Jesus, Lacazette

With this one you can ignore all forwards below the 10.0 mark and beside Vardy and Firmino (bad next two fixtures), there aren’t really any good options available anyway.
Enables switching big hitters in and out, depending on form and fixtures.
With two transfers or a maybe -4 hit, it’s easy to switch back to another system.

    4) 4-4-2
    Fabianski / Elliot
    Azpilicueta, Davies, 5.0, 5.0 / 4.5
    Eriksen, Coutinho, Silva, Choupo-Moting / 4.5
    Kane, Jesus, Calvert-Lewin

With Choupo-Moting and someone like Calvert-Lewin there are two of our important attacking spots occupied by cheaper players.
One of them has to play almost every week but maybe it's possible to cover the bad fixtures with the 5th defender.
The defence looks strong while the team maybe lacks some transfer flexibility.
With this squad, it's easy to line up different formations (3-4-3, 5-3-2, 4-3-3) from week to week though.

    5) 3-4-3
    Fabianski / Elliot
    Azpilicueta, Davies, 5.0 / 4.5, 4.5
    Eriksen, Silva, Ritchie, Choupo-Moting / 4.5
    Kane, Jesus, Vardy

The classic formation. In my opinion this looks best with a cheaper 3rd striker around the 6.0 mark.
We also need someone like Sigurdsson 6.0 / Mahrez 5.5 a few years ago in the 4th midfielder spot.
Both don’t exist so far this season.

    6) 3-4-3 (Top Heavy)
    Fabianski / Elliot
    Davies, 5.5, 4.5 / 4.5, 4.0
    Eriksen, Silva, Ritchie, Choupo-Moting / 4.5
    Kane, Jesus, Lacazette

    Options 3 and 5 combined.
Here is an additional advantage of being able to have a 4.0 defender to save some funds.

I know there are a lot of other possible formations, including 5-2-3 etc.
These are only the ones I’m considering atm.
Please note that you don't need to agree with some of the selected players, it's more about the structure. Instead of Eriksen/Silva/Coutinho there could be Hazard/Salah/Alli etc.

    A bit longer than planned…

Which team structure do you prefer?

532 with Alonso, strangely, you've ignored this formation, person at no 1 in FFS Members League has been playing it all season (without Alonso) and sits in the top 1k.

He's extracting real value with his starting 11 with no duds or fillers like you see in a lot of alternative formations.

              Oh...

IMO there's no cons other than not having a 3rd striker but as a result you have a stronger all round team to compensate.

My taste may differ to yours but this is mine.

              Elliot / Foster
Alonso, Ben Davies, Jones, Cedric, Naughton
Eriksen, Salah, Mkhitaryan / RLC, Carroll
              Kane, Jesus / Hemed.

1.5m in the bank for Salah to Hazard, Jesus to Lukaku, Mkhi to Coutinho, Mikhi to Sane/Sterling/Silva etc next week or this week for a hit.

Hemed and Naughton cover each others suspect fixtures if I want to play Hemed in their 'easier' home fixtures and switch to 433.

Think this gives a lot more flexibility than some of the rigid 343's we see that max out on strikers.

The value in defence means that this should be explored, bloke at no 1 in the members league is showing it can go toe to toe with 3 big striker teams.

Just my take on it, there's seems a lot of forced 343s that dont look great.

Certainly different to all formations I've played before but I quite like it.
Some City in and defence and midfield doesn't get much better.

Thanks, I have been thinking about those, If I don't go Hazard or back to Lukaku I have the option to go Mikhi to Sterling and Foster to the City keeper, just have to make that big call.

There's so much value in defence this is year that it should be explored IMO, wing backs are like mids now so the defence feels like an extension of the midfield.

Yeah, I agree. I'm looking at all those mentioned defence options.
Azpi/Alonso, Davies, Man.City, Jones, Daniels, Cedric, Ward etc. some great value there.

I agree. I've been hovering over this:

                    Pope Elliot
                    Jones Stones Cedric Davies Azpi
                    Hazard Sterling Martial
                    Lukaku Kane

Midfield could be Silva Miky Salah/Cout. But I want to bring Hazard in...

Right. Very good. However, your first problem is that your goalies are a shambles after four weeks. Try Ryan/Elliot, Gives you:

      BRI/NEW: EVE 79 CPL 222 SOU 27 BOU 193 STK 178 WAT 250 CPL 213 LIV -138 LEI 236 EVE 88 BUR 219 WAT 241

Your second problem, is that you are ignoring the individual qualities of your defenders.

Now, I think that Coutinho, Eriksen, Sterling, Kane and Jesus are must haves.

That leaves the United question. Their fixtures aren't great, so a defender may be ignored. Fellaini does not wholly answer the question.

In GW 10, you will discover that only Arsenal nd Liverpool have really decent fixtures. Coutinho, yes. But what about Arsenal?

Fabianski is just a 4.5 placeholder atm. Your Ryan/Elliot combination looks good!
Jones may end up in my team as I probably want him back in a few weeks.

You can check you formation scores on statistico - https://anewpla.net/fpl/report/ - Pity I can look back at last years

      3-4-3 (4 times - average 46 points)
      4-3-3 (3 times - average 80 points)

I'll be playing 5-2-3 or 5-3-3, depending whether there are better fixtures for one of my two "3rd" midfielder or the 4.5 defender

Current line up using starting prices:
      6.5, 5.5, 5.5, 5.5, 4.5
      8.0, 8.0, 6.0, 5.5, 4.5
      12.5, 10.5, 10.5

Good luck with 5-3-3, but a 5-2-3/4-3-3 hybrid looks good.
That's what I've been playing all season actually, and 5-3-2 may be even better.
But circumstances can change, and many top players are still having success with the good old 3-4-3.

Last time I checked on the formations used by leading players in my Top 10k Any Season mini-league, 3-4-3 was the most popular, followed by 4-3-3 and then 5-3-2. The current leader (who also tops the FFS Members mini-league) plays 5-3-2.

5 solid defenders with option to play 5 at back
2 pricey mids, 2 low mids, 1 bench fod
      3 great strikers
      looks like this:

      Fabianski (elliot)
      Azpi,Stones,Jones,Davies, Ward
      Eriksen, Silva (fellaini,choupo,king)
      Jesus, Vardy, Kane

with this team there is: 5-2-3, 4-3-3, 5-3-2 and cash cows to get back in players like lukaku.

Yes it does, I just managed to play the markets right and get players in before price rise which allows me to get the differences. I like it and it allows ways to maneuver to different fomations and get in players the suddenly become "must haves".

Yeah exactly, I might even get rid of one the def, thats the nice thing of having strong back 5, come GW12 I could downgrade stones or azpi to daniels or someone else and use that cash to fund lukaku. Just keep an eye on Footballfix and fplstats for prices and make moves that could be to do with your final WC if there prices are rising, thats the key.

Laca came in for Kun last week, so he was a disappointment against Brighton but I am not convinced by another of the forwards below 10M ... I would look to upgrade him but Lukaku is out of reach at present

It's all very marginal, not a lot of player to choose from ... If I sell Mkhi there aren't any similar priced midfielders, with Eriksen, Alli, Salah, Mane all costing an extra million and I my City slots are taken

That might mean ending up with only one really strong midfielder and dropping Mkhi down to e.g. Fellaini
Having 2 or 3 of these lower priced mids is also useful for swapping out and getting on the next bandwagon

I wildcarded last week and went for option 3, though with Lukaku.

As a general point, I think people should be keeping Lukaku. Can't quite understand the obsession with people getting rid of him when he's averaging 7.1 points per game and is the top scorer in the league. At this rate he'd get 38 goals in the season, so who cares if it's one goal every week?!

Potentially - if you got him at 11.5m though it's going to be expensive to get him back in. He could easily keep ticking along in those fixtures too.

Oh I got rid a while ago and got in firmino and jesus, admittedly much to my regret, but it did mean I only had one option for captain that was of course Kane so there is always pros and cons! part of the game!

        It's just a big gamble.
There is a chance he gets outscored over the next 4. But I agree in the next 2 against liv + hud he could easily get a big score. It's just a chance to make up ground if he doesn't score too much.

Agreed - and it's how you use that extra budget that is key. I'm not the time of manager who goes in for big gambles like dropping the top scorer at this stage of the season!

Last year it was always said before every big game that he couldn't do it vs top 6. This year with obviously more chances, it will be interesting to see if he does it, thats whats stopping me right now and the fixtures the other top attackers have.

It's important to remember he is at a completely different team this year though, where he actually gets decent service. Watching Everton this year is a real reminder of how Lukaku did it all himself last year. At the end of the day if United score in the next 4 games (which they should do) then chances are Lukaku will have some involvement.

Superb post - echoes my own thoughts while wildcarding.

For me it is a straight shoot out between 1. and 2.

The 4-3-3 seems to suit the pricing and player form this season.

Currently I favour the first - for flexibility - it gives me the option of going back to 3-4-3 but also allow me to leap on 8m+ bandwagons and have a good defence.

It is also worth noting that those going for 1 or 2 that this gives a cash cow to the team - who can free up 2m if needed. For 1. Vardy is the cash cow . For 2. It could be Azpilicueta.

We need those enablers sadly - but as well as magic beans we also need cash cows.

Jonty are you not tempted with a big 3 up top? Even with the injuries, Lukaku, Kane and Jesus looks like a great option.

Does mean you probably can't get a Chelsea player though.

1 or 2 for me too, and I agree 4-3-3 looks best.

#1 really has great attacking players and still a decent defence albeit no Chelsea/City while #2 has a great defence, good attack but also a sub 6.0 mid which I don't really like.
I still haven't found the right pick in this price bracket since selling Mahrez before GW32 in Leicester's title winning season 😆

If Richarlison had two good fixt next he'd be ideal. But he doesn't sadly.

But when Watford's fixtures improve he is an option in place of one of those top mids - which would free up 2m+ for perhaps Vardy to Morata or a 5m defender to a Chelsea one.

This is another bonus of 1. - it gives that flexibility to do that move in a couple of GWKS time.

I agree tho - currently no other 6m mids appeal, especially as Shelvey has stolen much of Ritchie's set pieces.

Great post, but I don't think the finances add up in option 1 - if you total the player costs you can't afford a single premium def, which could be an issue. Unless of course you had some of the players in the wildcard from their original cheaper price.

      Pope (Elliot)
      Alonso Luiz Davies Jones Maguire
      Eriksen Silva Sterling (RLC Carroll)

Great effort and useful to see different approaches on paper. However personally I feel you are dismissing the 5.5m mids too quickly! If you are going big in defence then of course the midfield has to be sacrificed, but is it all that bad?

Choupo-Moting 5.5m - mci BOU wat LEI bha cry LIV

OOP and second for shots in the box for mids. Seems quite wasteful but 22 goals and 18 assists in 106 games for Schalke will blow his price away if he comes anywhere close to that.

Ritchie 6.0m - sot CRY bur BOU mun WAT wba

Penalties, free kicks and corners - a good start. Also proven decent value so far and has a yet to even score from the spot.

Gross 5.7m - EVE whu SOT swa STK mun CRY

Weak attacking team but high involvement and has an amazing history of creating chances and has somewhat proven to be value so far. On corners and free kicks and Brighton's centre backs will score goals as well as Hemed when available.

I am contemplating having at least two of these to afford the defenders I want as well as a big front 3.

Yes, I agree there are some promising picks, it's just about getting the right one at the right time. Most of them are good for 1-2 games before they disappear again.
I'm still a bit cautios here after being stuck with Joe Allen for ages last season.
This season didn't start any better with my decison to opt for Ryan Fraser.

Choupo-Moting is my prefered choice of them right now. Richarlison after the next 2.
Getting the right one is key, as we all need one or two of them from time to time.

          Davies, Jones, Azpi, Ward
          Silva, Eriksen, Richarlison
          Jesus, Kane, Vardy

subs: Elliott --- Choupo-Moting, Cork, Hünemeier, 0.4 ITB

Jones and Ward could be switched to Stones and Mee but somehow I fancy keeping Jones

Nothing really wrong with this team. Looks good.
Richarlison and Choupo-Moting are looking good atm but the former with two tough fixtures coming up while Choupo plays v City. We don't know yet if they will continue to get some points or if they will disappear like several other players have done.
Hünemeier someone I probably would avoid but it's possible to have a fodder defender with your setup I guess.

And congrats on your rank 🙂 Never been in that heights... 516 once after 3 Puncheon assists in one game 3 seasons ago. Even at this rank I felt some pressure, must be interesting to be inside the top 10 😉

      Great post Lyonnais!

After your post, I tried to construct a 1) with the players that I consider 'essential' and simply couldn't make it fit. I've been back and forth on it all week. I think we also need to consider a personal style element to how we play the game when constructing our sides. Some people are alright with the risk vs reward approach of having a 4.5 pivot - I'm not as much a fan myself as I'd rather have as many players I can rely on, on the pitch and (hopefully) contributing.

I've gone with a modified 2), which I feel gives me flexibility in formation - though as you point out, it might take some surgery in order to bring in a Sanchez/Hazard type.

      Ryan/Elliott
      Azpi/Davies/Jones/Cedric/Ward
      Eriksen/Sterling/Gross/Choupo-Moting/Loftus-Cheek
      Kane/Jesus/Vardy

I'm gambling that I can rotate Gross/Choupo-Moting in the 3rd mid spot (or even bring in Ward and play 5-3-2) - and that I think Loftus-Cheek can still deliver on the promise at the start of the season, once Palace work out how to put the ball in the net.

      Hoping.

All right, lets talk Eden Hazard.

      The way I see it:

      Pros
      - Playing against a team that has conceded 17 in 7, with two good fixtures after that
      - maybe the most consistent 200+ points player in the game
      - On penalties as the only premium mid
      - Great differential with high ceiling

      Cons
      - Still no sign of actual FPL form
      - Chelsea with a dip in form now?
      - Sometimes plays quite deep
      - Expensive

      Neutral
      - Effect of Morata gone is uncertain. Might play higher up, but they may struggle more for goals

      I'm unsure, but certainly tempted

      Alonso. Kolasinac. Davies. Luiz. Cedric.
      Eriksen. Silva. Ritchie. C-moting. Cheek.
      Kane. Jesus. Abraham.

I'm not a fan of 5 a the back but the dearth of options in attack and mid between 6-8m keeps leaving me with this. Thoughts?

I don't think I'd have Foster on a WC. Ritchie also appears to have lost set piece duties to Shelvey so I'm not sure if he's a good option. I'll be getting rid of those two from my team when I WC.

Also, maybe a city defender instead of Luiz

What changes would you make to this team over the IB

      Foster Elliott

      Davies Bertrand Mee Dunk Maguire

      Eriksen Salah Carroll Gross Ritchie

      Lukaku Kane Chicarito

      1 FT 0.2 ITB

      Any ideas would be welcomed

      Elliot - Fabianski/Pope
      Mbemba - Ward - Luiz - Monreal - Davies.
      Fellaini - Coutinho - King - Hazard - Silva
      Kane - Morata/Jesus - Okazaki

1.0 ITB. Is it really worth losing Fellaini to Carrick/4.5- , Luiz to Simpson, Montreal to Cedric to get Vardy in?

A special place in my heart belongs to the one short pulled up lethal hitman in the picture right above

Here's a WC draft with SANCHEZ

      Pope / Elliot
      Davies / Luiz / Jones / Otamendi / Ward
      Sanchez / Sterling / Silva / Coutinho / Richarlison
      Kane/ Ayew / 4.5

a 4-5-1/5-4-1 with Ward and Richarlison rotating

Nothing really can be said about pep's plans but in my opinion silva and de bruyne have been really essential to pep's gameplan in premier league matches. I don't think they will be rested.maybe they'll play less than 90 mins but I am confident that they will start every fixture if not injured.

I would take Hazard and Otamendi - it's an extra 0.8M but you could downgrade Choupo to a 4.5
Most weeks you would be happy with a mid of Sterling, Hazard and Richarlsion with Fellaini an option

I don't fancy Coutinho timing wise - IB followed by 2 tough fixture and CL matches
Get Hazard, see how does vs CPL and Watford, then you could re-assess
You have an option of a City double up in midfield or could then try and squeeze to Sanchez home to SWA

Stating the obvious, but with a choice of two players - e.g. Hazard or Coutinho, it is easier if you start with the higher price one and can downgrade rather then trying to upgrade from the lower price
