A West Ham pair catch the eye despite playing thousands of miles apart, a Crystal Palace player actually scores a goal – in vain, fittingly enough – and results set up a massive Monday night for many Premier League assets.

Here are the notes from a dramatic Friday night of World Cup qualifying action.

Hammers duo in the spotlight

West Ham players were to the fore on two continents in Friday’s World Cup qualifiers.

Striker Javier Hernandez scored in Mexico’s 3-1 win over Trinidad and Tobago, while his club team-mate Marko Arnautovic was on target as Austria beat Serbia in a 3-2 thriller.

The midfielder recovered from illness to play the full 90 minutes for Austria, who did a huge favour to both Wales and the Republic of Ireland by beating the Group D leaders.

Serbia’s goals came from Crystal Palace’s Luka Milivojevic – only the second Eagle to score all season – and Man United midfielder Nemanja Matic.

Southampton’s Dusan Tadic and Newcastle striker Aleksandar Mitrovic also played the full 90 minutes for the Serbs, who will now have to beat Georgia at home on Monday to guarantee automatic qualification for next year’s finals in Russia.

The form of both Hernandez and Arnautovic could be welcome news for Fantasy managers looking to tap into Hammers assets.

Slaven Bilic’s side, who have won two and drawn one of their last four matches, have a good run of fixtures through to Gameweek 14, with only a visit from Liverpool representing a major test.

Hernandez (19.3%) is the fifth most popular Fantasy Premier League striker, and he has now scored twice in his last three matches for club and country.

Monday night showdown looms

Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey provided the assist for Wales’ winning goal in Georgia.

Chris Coleman’s side was packed with Premier League players, including Ashley Williams, Ben Davies, Andy King, Joe Allen, Sam Vokes and Wayne Hennessey. Hal Robson-Kanu and Ben Woodburn were handed late minutes from the bench.

The Welsh now face a winner-takes-all match at home to the Republic of Ireland on Monday.

Martin O’Neill’s side beat Moldova 2-0, with assists coming from Brighton’s Shane Duffy and Burnley defender Stephen Ward – that’s back-to-back assists for the Clarets full-back now.

Newcastle’s Ciaran Clark, Duffy and Ward all started and finished the match for the Irish, while Southampton striker Shane Long played 83 minutes and Bournemouth’s Harry Arter recovered from an Achilles injury to play the final 11 minutes.

The victory means that any one of Wales, Ireland and Serbia can still win Group D, with a play-off place for finishing second also up for grabs.

Draws for Serbia and Wales would secure them first and second place respectively.

Elsewhere…

Defenders Matteo Darmian (Man United) and Davide Zappacosta (Chelsea) played the full 90 minutes as Italy were held to a shock 1-1 draw at home by Macedonia.

Southampton striker Manolo Gabbiadini was an unused sub for the Italians, who now face a play-off to make it to Russia next year after Spain won Group G with a 3-0 win over Albania.

David de Gea played the full match and David Silva 74 minutes, while Cesar Azpilicueta, Pedro and Nacho Monreal watched on from the bench.

Everton playmaker Gylfi Sigurdsson put in a full shift as Iceland edged closer to a first ever World Cup finals with a 3-0 win in Turkey achieved with just 25% possession.

Burnley midfielder Johann Berg Gudmundsson played 82 minutes.

Ivory Coast duo Eric Bailly and Serge Aurier started and finished a goalless draw with Mali. Swansea City striker Wilfried Bony shook off a hamstring issue to travel with the squad, but didn’t even make the bench.

Brighton striker Tomer Hemed, currently serving a three-match domestic ban, played the full 90 minutes as Israel won 1-0 in Liechtenstein, while the man he was cited for stamping on, Newcastle defender DeAndre Yedlin, started for the USA in a 4-0 victory over Panama.

Stoke City defender Geoff Cameron was an unused sub as the Americans closed in on qualification for Russia 2018.

Burnley striker Chris Wood kept up his fine form with a goal for New Zealand in their 2-1 friendly defeat to Japan. Southampton centre-half Maya Yoshida played the full match for the hosts.

England’s U21 side beat their Scottish counterparts 3-1 in Euro U21 qualifying. Swansea City’s Tammy Abraham converted a penalty and Liverpool forward Dominic Solanke was also on the scoresheet.

Elliot is the first player you should have on your WC.

Brady -> RLC gives you a milly to have a second goalie and upgrade Crouch.

Yeah I really want to keep Silva, seems to be nailed. Mkhi+Atsu to Cout and Fellaini seems a tempting option for now, got exact funds for it now for a hit. Wait till next round and hope prices remain unchanged?

It's certainly better than the hit you suggested. I personally wouldn't be rushing to get in a player who's been on international duty up in Bolivia and who's playing a Mourinho side

      1. diesel001
        • 9 Years

Why? If I go three big strikers it stuffs up my midfield and defence. Morata is injured. Aguero is injured. Lukaku has tough fixtures. Jesus hasn't been prolific like Aguero. Firmino out of form.

I know it's hard, but I'd pick one of Azpi Alonso and upgrade Vardy to a 10.5m just for the price point. Don't think both Azpi and Alonso will provide you value for 13.5m.

Would really appreciate some advice on whether my situation makes WCing a sound tactic.

    Current team (on -4):
    Forster - Elliot
    Jones - Mee - Cedric - Davies - Lowe
    Salah - D Silva - Atsu - RLC - Carroll
    Jesus - Lukaku - Kane

    Potential WC team:
    Pope - Elliot
    Jones - Ward - Cedric - Davies - Azpi
    Sterling - D Silva - Richarlison - RLC - Carroll
    Jesus - Vardy - Kane

with 2.2ITB to get Morata back when fully fit for Vardy, or help enable a move to Aguero/Lukaku.

Would wipe out my -4 and massively improve my team but doing well could (and should) I save it? TIA

I wouldn't. Was thinking of wildcarding myself but realised my team should do well in the coming weeks so decided to save for a probable GW12 WC.

Saints defence has fantastic fixtures in the next four and you already have double City attack + Kane and Lukaku. Salah could always score even though he's wasting a lot of chances. Richarlison can wait two GWs imo.

    Gomes
    Mee, Davies, Cedric
    Mkhitaryan, Fabregas, Eriksen, David Silva
    Morata, Kane, Chicharito

    A) Mkhitaryan, Fabregas --> Hazard, Fellaini
    B) Mkhitaryan, Fabregas, Morata --> Hazard, Fellaini, Jesus
    C) Davies, Fabregas, Morata --> Azpilicueta, Hazard, Abraham

I believe Davies will be benched due to the upcoming game with Real Madrid. Also, I think it's time for Hazard to repeat his previous year with goals and assists.

No response to my original post so I'll try to simplify it

      A) Forster, Mee, Lowe, Salah, Atsu, Lukaku (-4)

      B) WC to Pope, Ward, Azpi, Sterling, Richarlison, Vardy (2.2ITB for Morata or funds for Aguero when fit)

A easily. Forster has some lush fixtures coming up too. Bench Lowe

Thanks both, needed someone to talk some sense into me. WC could be very handy later down the line when we know more about Hazard/Sanchez/Coutinho/Morata/Aguero

No one going for VDijk with these 4 (5/6) fixtures? Had 3 attempts last game. Same as Cedric but surely, we know to expect a goal from him sooner..

I was tempted to do Mkhitaryan and Hegazi > Sterling and VVD - 4

But I'll just play Carroll this week as the math for a defender hit ain't good. Nice fixtures tho certainly worth considering

Im on a wc and possibly have the funds to take him instead of Cedric. Not sure whether thats the best way or rather get a second playing keeper next to Elliot.
In principal I dont wanna spend on a 4,5 if Elliot could get me savepoints all the way. Ncastle havent looked to shabby.

I don't think a Southampton asset is for for the season just 4 games. Whereas a keeper pair will last you a a season. Alternatively I'd you invest in VVD you have funds in place to jump on

Updated WC side following earlier helpful ideas. Views on this welcome?

      Fabianski
      Alonso Davies Cedric Ward
      Hazard Sterling Fellaini
      Kane Jesus Vardy

      Elliot Choupo-Moting Lascelles RLC

Looks decent. Don't like the potential Newcastle double up in defence tho

Pretty nice, I've gone for Coutinho over Hazard which allows a back five of Ederson Alonso Kolasinac Trippier Ward. Rest of my team is the same.

Maybe rotate Atsu with Ward instead of Lascelles and downgrade the latter to 4.0 and RLC to Atsu.

Not sure on Fellaini too. I have pretty much the same idea ecept for 2 4,5s in mid on the bench (+Atsu) and playing 523
but the excact same players but Otamendi instead of Chupo and one 4.5mid instead of Lascelles.

Now thinking Van DIjk with the remaining funds (0.6) instead of Cedric too

I'm just going cheapest. Difficult to say. Sane is a beast at home however

Sterling maybe thru the middle with Agu out and Pep talking him up for different positions.
Sane would be the mega differential and much better player when on the ball tho. Sterling tapping them in and getting in more dangerous positions..

      A) drop Salah for Sterling?
      or
      B) drop Salah+Mee for David Luiz+Choupo

Doos, with respect to.your point pn Kolasinac earlier: Arsenal have kept three consecutive CS with him in his favored position. Also, look here: https://arsenal-mania.com/forum/threads/sead-kola%C5%A1inac-signed-sead-delivered.30199/
