Manchester United’s 2-1 win at the Emirates appears to have come at some cost, with Phil Jones reportedly facing “weeks” on the sidelines as just one of several casualties.

Jones was forced off after 17 minutes of the Emirates clash with an apparent ankle injury and Sir Alex Ferguson’s post match comments suggest that he could now face several weeks on the sidelines…

“It’s not good news for us…I think Jones will be out for a few weeks – it’s ankle ligaments.”

Reports state that Jones will undergo scans on the injury on Monday, at which point we will hopefully gain a confirmed term of absence.

Jones has suffered a number of knocks and niggles in his first season at Old Trafford and another setback would seem likely to diminish his Fantasy ownership further. The former Blackburn man has suffered heavy sales following his recent layoff with a jaw injury and illness.

There are also further reported knocks in the United camp, with Ferguson confirming that Michael Carrick had sustained a hamstring problem which left him stricken in the closing stages of today’s victory.

The Daily Mail also reports that Nani left the stadium in a protective boot having suffered an injury which forced him off on 75 minutes. Wayne Rooney is also reported to have been struggling with a knock which left him limping from the field on the final whistle.

Should Nani and Rooney face a spell on the sidelines, it would seem likely trigger significant FPL sales. Nani’s blank at the Emirates was his fifth consecutive game without returns, while Rooney has also gone off the boil, fetching just two assists in his last four league appearances.

We await further confirmation of those injuries from Old Trafford, with further reports likely to surface in tomorrow’s press.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Current team:

    Krul - Vorm
    Senderos - Evans - Richards - Raylor - Huth
    Dyer - Sess - Silva - Bale - Demps
    RVP - Fletcher - Aguero

Need to ship out Raylor, I think. Stupidly got him in on WC last week, so he's worth £5.3m. Plus £0.3m in the bank. I'm thinking of Raylor > Santon and keeping funds to upgrade elsewhere? Sound good?

you still need depth in your defence. With Jevans' fixtures and ful/stoke rotation, you'll be calling on that 5th defender. Ok, so it wasn't Raylor. Santon sounds fine but then look to maybe upgrade huuuth (no more rotation) - can you count on stoke cleanies every 2nd game?

            Whats wrong with you?

You played your wildcard last week , presumably put some thought into it , and now because several of your players only scored one or two points you already want to get rid?

I bought Sturridge , Huth Mingolet Sorrwnsen Walters Mclean Rooney Riise

with mine last week ,but im hardly looking to ship them out ater one week of underperformance

I never said anything about getting rid of defenders. Only Raylor, given that his starting position is under threat.

You've only taken 1 hit this season - that's impressive.

I'm a firm believer in fixing problems as soon as possible.

I had gambled on an intricate defensive rotation - could have been promising and based on my already owned stokies, but I see now that was a bad plan. I had nagging doubts and wanted Valencia anyway - in hindsight I was too trusting of Walters, who has been good for me.

My real misjudgement was gambling again, with pig up front.

Neither gamble paid off in the short term. Given that you have to play 3 defenders every week, I addressed that problem first. It also made me feel like my FPL fate was in my hands *sigh*

Our very different approaches has led to roughly the same end result 🙂 - At roughly the same pace, I might add.

yea we all doing about the same overall, last season took plenty of four pointers and finished in top 500
This season so far i havent had to , Been very lucky with injuries etc and still have original wildcard

What do you guys think is the priority for me this week? I'm wildcarding in GW24 so this week is just a 1 week punt. It's either:

    a) Wilko -> Kelly (benching Caulker)
    b) Nani -> x
    c) Rooney -> y

    Mignolet
    BAE, JEvans, Caulker
    Nani, Bale, Sessegnon, Dempsey
    RVP, Rooney, Adebayor

Solid team for this gw mate. Id stick with Nani and Rooney if they're fit and rid one of them during the wc. Also Id do A so that gives you 3 home defenders as the rest of the team is fine.

Anyone else thinking the days of cheap defences being necessary are passing us by? There's absolutely no value in the big hitters this season.

RVP had a real hot streak but he's turning into an up-front Silva with his recent returns of a goal but only a goal in most games.

Look at the expensive players who haven't been returning lately: Rooney, Aguero, Torres, Drogba, Adebayor, Hernandez, Van der Vaart, Nasri, Gerrard, Suarez, Carroll, Malouda, Lampard, Nani, Mata, Young.....

All for various reasons of course but now there's so many budget options throughout the positions, would it really be all that crazy to supplement Bale, RVP and Silva with a few more budget options and spend some big bucks at the back?

If you were wildcarding now you could afford combinations like Hart and Valencia instead of Krul and Nani, or Vermaelen and Ba instead of Simpson and Rooney, or Evra and Morison instead of Senderos and Aguero.

Beware doubling on city - it's a lot of money tied up in a defence that's not as tight as is made out. 1 is a must though.

There is some contradictions going on here I feel. These posts feel a little kneejerkery imo. We've had a weekend with very few cleenies and folk are saying that uber-defences are not the way anymore. If anything, the lack of cs should be a sign to us all that getting in expensive defenders is a waste of time.
Yet we've seen SWN, NEW, (neither at home this week) and one or two others keep a decent amount of cs.

Hard to predict? Relatively so. The above teams though have been fairly consistent.

Best way this argument up in the context of the season so far rather than one goal-infested weekend. 😕

I've had players like Wilkinson, Simpson and Senderos in my team this season though, and there's nothing more annoying than that moment when they let in a goal after 15 minutes and you know you've got another 2 pointer if you're lucky.

Then I've had players like early-season Bosingwa, Vermaelen, Kompany, and at a mere price upgrade of 2M-2.5M, there's always a chance of attacking returns which yield 6 points per goal, as well as the chance of the 4 points for a cleanie, which is instant double figures.

And you can free up two "expensive defender" spots by downgrading Rooney to Sturridge or Ba, or Aguero to Fletcher, Graham, Morison or Helguson. Then you're raking in double figures from the Verminator, consistent 6-7 pointers from your budget striker, and only missing out on the odd explosive return sandwiched by 2 pointers from Rooney.

Perhaps its 6 of one and half a dozen of the other but its a different approach and one that could pay off handsomely, surely.

Simpson and SWN defenders have been a little goldmine of cleenies this year. Boswinga delivered next to nothing and now hardly starts. Verm is always crocked and Bad K averages 4.5 ppg. Why do you want these type of players for so little return?

When the bps are generally going to forwards, this is not a time to go cheap uptop. Granted, Ba has been a bargain. You only have to look at the points totals for each playing position to realise the difference and where your priorities should be.

I don't think that your positiions are as far apart as they seem. There have been a couple of quality options but SWA and NEW defences have been gold and won't often let in many goals.

You probably wouldn't want more than 3 luxuries, and no less than 1 imo. That's why I have 2 🙂

Money in defence is secondary to up top, esp this year.

Mind, I still get the shivers every time time I have to play Senderos.

I brought in Skrtel as well as Enrique who i'd had for ages to double up on a clean sheet banker too - 1 point from the two of them, to go nicely with Simpson's -1 and Sorensen's 1.
Dempsey and Tony V rescued my gameweek.

I had planned to switch Skrtel to Kompany after a week or two, i might do it this week as I can't see everton scoring against city..

I agree that it's important to have 2-3 mid-expensive defenders. I mean, a defence like Shotton-Senderos-Simpson-Caulker-Evans looks like real 'value' but is risky since a couple of those aren't sure starters and could come back to haunt you. I'm thinking of going with Vermaelen and Kompany as my 2 expensive defenders, maybe Cahill at mid price (will he start?) and two of Senderos/Caulker/Simpson for my cheapies. This improves the goal threat/ clean sheet chances significantly IMO.

I've played my WC, went with a defence of Santon-Senderos-Baines-Agger-Warnock, deliberately keeping money in my defence so I can use my two FTs to get Verm and Kompany in for Baines and Agger for the next GW.

As I've already WC'd, I'm not really in a position to start thinking of rejigging my whole team and adopting the philosophy I outlined above but it just seems that on current form, you could quite easily put together a solid scoring team with an abundance of cash in the bank.

But yes, Vermaelen and Komps is the way forward. I'm not too excited by Cahill though. Chelsea leak goals and I see him as a rotation risk right now with Luiz, Terry, Ivanovic and Bosingwa to accomodate as well.

I'm starting to think playing 5 mids is better than 3 strikers.....more points for goals, baps, clean sheet bonus etc.

7 qualified for the 20% League so far. Scores needed to qualify at least after hits are

    GW20 = 65, GW21 = 58, GW22 = currently 35

GW24 wildcard - thoughts? Numbers in brackets are the prices I paid for players I currently have. Also, I'll be wildcarding again in GW28 so this is for 4 weeks only....

    Sorenson, Ruddy (4.0)
Richards, Huth, Simpson (4.0), Kelly, Caulker (3.9)
Silva, Bale (8.9), Walters, Dempsey (8.5), Sigurdsson
    RVP (11.9), Aguero, Helgusson

    Notes:
    1) Bank 1.6m to potentially do Helgusson -> Zamora in GW25. If I need to fix injuries then Helgs has good fixtures so no problem to keep him.
    2) Ruddy (swa), Kelly (STO) and Caulker (NOR) would only play GW25.
    3) I'd bench Dempsey (mcy) for Sigurdsson (wba) in GW24.

I like how its not too kneejerky with not having the fantastic 5 in midfield (Dempsey, Sess, Bale, Silva, Valencia). I also like how you are holding faith in Aguero. Defense looks sound and I trust you have considered rotation?

I like it, although with Dempsey already giving you Fulham coverage (really hate that term D: ) you might be better served upgrading Ruddy to a keeper with more CS potential with that 1.6m

    Aguero----

Have never owned him , and to be honest i dont quite see the attraction. I mean hes not reallt a striker is he?
If Dzeko played every week he would be a much better option , as it is i would much rather have just Silva.

Sadly Rooney seems to have gone the same way, i like to see my Strikers actually playing as strikers , and two of the three most expensive players in the game are actually oop midfielders at the moment

I think I only played Baines in the dying embers.

Tbf, I owed my rank to the five ubers as I hit the top 500 before the halfway mark. I seemed to moving between high 300s to mid 400s and barely left the top 500 if at all.

At the end of each season, I analyse the winner's strategy. Last year's winner went 4+1 for the majority of the season. This has influenced a lot of my thinking and a reason why I employ this strategy.

The year before, the winner played 5 ubers all season long. Nothing above 5 mill.

What's the common denominator here? Cheap defences and minimum investment in expensive defenders.

This year, the scores for defenders are down. Way down. Look how far ahead Baines was at this stage last season. My mistake was to get him too late. I'm sure that is what kept me from making the jump to the top 100.

Still an interesting post though Jafa. I suppose with the uber cheaps you could also argue perhaps that some expensive attacking players aren't living up to their price tag at the moment. With the leftover cash would it not be wise to spend more on defense instead of leaving it in the bank?

      Gareth '£150m pricetag' Bale?

I'm not so sure he'll move assuming Spurs get champions league..

RVP on the other hand, if the money's right and he hasn't signed a new contract and they don't have CL they might sell him to fit in with their business principles - don't lose a player for nothing.
Then Arsenal really would be down the toilet, where would they be this seaspn without RVP's goals and assists, very midtable or below

Bale is a lot better than I thought, the real deal in my opinion. I think he could be a good signing for Barcelona and play him as left back where he would be an auxiliary winger like Alves on the other flank.

RVP is far too good for Arsenal, FA Cup in 2005 is only silverware he has won since joining in 2004. He also may have lost faith in Wenger, his reaction to that bizarre sub was damning.
