Bottom of the league entering December, the light appeared to be dying for Steve Kean and his beleaguered Blackburn side, but a series of determined displays in recent weeks have demonstrated that neither the players nor the manager have any intention of going gently into the night…

Attack appears to be the only form of defence available to a side with no clean sheets in the league all season, and with the Ewood Park faithful sometimes resembling a lynch mob it seems a kill-or-be-killed mentality on the pitch may be the only way to save the team from the drop and the manager from the gallows.

The loan signing of striker Anthony Modeste from Bordeaux is Steve Kean’s first significant foray into the transfer market this month, and seems indicative of the attacking mindset that is slowly propelling the club’s climb up the table. With Yakubu the only consistent goal scorer in a somewhat agricultural front line, Kean appeared relieved to have acquired an option with more cultivated qualities, commenting:

If you look at his attributes as a player, then he has something that we don’t have, he likes to play on the shoulder, he likes to run in behind. He can stretch the game and technically he is good.

THE STATISTICS

A product of the Nice youth system, Modeste made his full professional debut for the French Ligue 1 outfit back in 2007 and returned a modest 10 goals in 63 appearances over two seasons at the Stade Du Ray. Loaned out to Ligue 2 side Angers in the summer of 2009, Modeste relished regular starts and re-ignited his faltering prospects with an impressive haul of 21 goals in 37 appearances.

A 3.5m Euro move to Bordeaux the following season seemed to herald a rebirth for the young striker in the top-tier of French football, but a frustrating second season saw Modeste reduced to a peripheral role. As a result, Blackburn’s scouts endured a wasted trip earlier this month, as the forward was nothing more than an unused sub in Bordeaux’s clash with Valenciennes on the 14th January. Over a season and a half at the Stade Chaban-Delmas, though, Modeste has notched 15 goals in 63 appearances. He’s also represented the France U21 side on 15 occasions, scoring 6 times, but has yet to make the step up to full international level.

THE PROSPECTS

Modeste’s goal scoring record for Bordeaux is perhaps more impressive than it might initially appear, given his regular position on the substitutes’ bench. His arrival will give Kean more options in terms of formation- the Blackburn boss prefers a lone striker system and has started with a front two just twice this season. Aside from Yakubu, the forwards have failed miserably, with David Goodwillie and Jason Roberts netting 2 goals in twenty-five appearances between them.

Clearly, Bordeaux still feel the young striker has a promising future, having refused to countenance a clause in the loan contract that would allow Blackburn to seal a permanent deal at the end of the season. Watched closely by Arsenal following his fruitful spell at Angers, Modeste plainly has his admirers amongst European football’s elite, and with two disappointing spells at French Ligue 1 clubs already blotting his copybook, he will be anxious to prove himself at what could be a make-or-break loan spell in the Premier League.

With a Fantasy Premier League (FPL) valuation of 5.0, Modeste will primarily be competing with Danny Graham, Steve Morison and Leon Best for investment in a budget striker bracket that has so far failed to deliver the kind of output enjoyed by owners of Andy Carroll and Peter Odemwingie last season.

Blackburn’s fixtures are a mixed bag in the short term with trips to Arsenal and Manchester City sandwiched between some kinder home ties against Newcastle, QPR and Aston Villa. This spell should give Fantasy managers ample opportunity to assess Modeste’s potential in time for an enticing run of games for Blackburn between Gameweeks 27 and 31, and with goals the only likely path to salvation for Steve Kean’s side, Modeste should get every chance to make his mark in what could be a long and bloody battle against relegation.

    How's this overwhelmingly generic WC-team looking for this week and beyond;

    Lindy
    Send - Komp - Evans
    Sess - Silva - Bale - Demps
    Welbeck RVP Aguero

    Krul - Simp - Walters - Shotton

GK's - rotate nicely all season (although I fear De Gea will get some game time)

Defenders - Gonna play Komp every round, and as I said about the GK's, NEW and MAN rotate nicely, the same does FUL and STK.

Midfield - Rotating these players will be a pain in the a*se. Getting rid of Walters for Valencia in GW28 (Will have to free up some funds elsewhere)

Forwards - Welbeck seems in-favour and is in form. The other two speak for themselves.

    Thoughts?

ur team is 70% same as the team i am planning.

kun is not worth the price IMO, and lindy is too much risk. i am sure SAF will use de gea as 1st choice in the future. Evans is enough utd. defensive coverage IMO, i am getting mingolet instead.

I agree that Kun is a bit over-priced (he will come good when the weather heats up though :P) but he will be a differential in my ML so think I'm going to back him for the next period of games.

Lindy is a risk, and I would easily had chosen Mignolet if their home fixtures were a bit better after this week. Still might switch, though.

Interesting to see you having Welbeck instead of a cheaper striker so that you can fit Valencia in for Walters.
Since you're getting Valencia in GW28, why not get him now with WC and you can also catch on the price rise?
Just wanna hear some of your thoughts 🙂

Yep that is the only concern I'm having at the moment (should have listed that in the original post)

Its basically Valencia & Helguson or Walters & Welbeck

The second one makes it easier for me to bench one as Walters is useless away from home. And I'm going to gamble on benching Sess for GW26 as I most likely will play both Krul and Simpson that week.

Really torn between the two though, will have to wait and see but a bit annoying to not take advantage of Valencias rises, I must admit 🙂

If you look at my comment below, I have the same concerns too.
Walters fixtures doesn't look good. Away MU, Home against rejuvenated Sunderland, Away against Fulham. That's three bad games in a row. I think I am very much on shipping Walters out.

Yep good point, don't see him doing any damage in either of those 3 tbh. (Hopefully Sunderland, if I keep him I'm playing him ahead of Dempsey that round) Swansea and Norwich are two tempting games though...

Shotton a rotation risk? Could save a little bit on my WC by swapping Sorenson and Brown to
Mignolet and Shotton. Would allow me to pick Morrison Ahead of Helgusson as well.

He should have scored 2 at the weekend. Points will come. Tempted to go for him over Silva on the WC so i can double up on City defenders + Aguero. Mata is bossing Silva as far as stats go for key passes, dribbles & attempts on goal.

My new strategy has worked a treat. I will captain Torres every week. That way I will achieve top 50k in the world for that week and a lovely green arrow.
The success rate for my new strategy is 1 out of 1. That's 100% success in anyone's book.
I think I'm onto something here and now firmly believe that I will win FPL this year.
All of those thinking that they might copy this are sadly mistaken if they too, believe that they will win FPL, as they are already a week behind.

It's only a good idea if you feel a WC this week will benefit your team more than using it next week instead. Don't get too caught up by gaining the odd 0.1 or 0.2 for your team value.
The first WC was the time to make money. The second one is all about setting your team up for the run-in, especially in GK/Defence, where you don't want to be wasting transfers.
I would be really, really happy if I went the rest of the season just swapping in/out the form players in midfield and up front.

Ya and a good one too, Macheda doesn't count. I'll be getting Taiwo in when he is added to the game, thinking about getting Buzsaky too as a dirt cheap punt. Strange Warnock played Derry ahead of him all season.

Kieron Dyer on goals on Sunday said Warnock told Buzsaky he could leave on a free transfer in January

What did you make of Barton blasting Neil on Twitter? Well out of order I thought, he really needs to learn to shut his mouth.

Agreed. He was way too disrespectful to a decent man who gave QPR so much especially from someone who achieved very little for the club so far. Barton is an overrated, overpaid arsehole, i don't like him at all.

ooh, that is exciting...then maybe this week, yeah, there should be a few double risers. The NTIs for today were very high for a Monday. It looks like a lot of people waited til this week because of City v Spurs and Utd v Ars last week, plus you've got 9 days to tinker...good luck

    Strong debate:
    Valencia vs Silva

Valencia has bad fixtures coming in, but in a superb form.
Silva has great fixtures and always consistent, but his return is not as explosive as Valencia.

    Which one lads?! 😀

Even if I dont WC and I am leaning towards playing it, I still have to ditch Nani for either Valencia or Dempsey. Am thinking Valencia for this weekend and then maybe move to Demps, Get Valencia and move from Sess to Demps in a couple of weeks - am lost here, I know I have to choose but it's a tough one.

Jones will apparently be ready for the Liverpool FA cup game this weekend now. His injury isn't as bad as initially feared. You should be fine, I would sell Nani for Valencia with your FT and save your WC.

Personally I think city defenders are better, for example kompany is 6.5 and hart is just over that, they both get CS points but Kompany scores headers and gets bonus points. I think if you are willing to spend that much on city defence go kompany

Valencia & Evans (STO, che, LIV, nor, tot)

    or

Mata (swa, UTD, eve, BOL, wba) & Caulker (CHE, wba, NOR, sto, wig)

Before you answer here are some stats from the last two weeks.

    Attempts on goal.
    Mata - 10 - Valencia - 2

    Successful Dribbles
    Mata - 6 - Valencia - 4

    Key Passes
    Mata - 7 - Valencia - 7

Point is, Mata should have scored at least two at the weekend but his finishing, which is usually good, let him down. He is getting chances and the stats back that up, points will come.

Valencia and Caulker if you have no vorm in goal.
Might even double up on Swansea def. I don't like Evans, very frustrating FPL player.

We can actually ignore the Successful dribbles, key passes and touches stats.
Dribbles- Chelsea are slow, even with Mata's dribbles, the opponent will park their bus in penalty box and chelsea couldn't finish the ball to the back of the net.
Key Passes- Do you expect Torres to score the chance?
Touches- Chelsea are slow, always have too much time on middle of the field, that's why Mata have so many unnecessary touches.

Historically, all langauge eventually evolves into the quickest and most efficient form of understandable communication

For example, the extremely wordy and obscure prose of Shakespeare evolved into basic communication of the mid 20th century, and now, we are enevitably heading towards text speak

I was thinking of doubling up on City defence too but with Balotelli's inevitable suspension I assume Aguero will be on penalty kick duties.

Dzeko could also be an option as a punt as he plays higher up. Aguero effectively plays in the same position as Silver just in behind the front striker. For me this is off putting

To be honest id rather have Aguero for these fixtures if I only had one as he could be more explosive. So whos the better choice Richards and any priced midfielder or silva and any other defender?

Is it heresy for me to say that I think GK rotation is fruitless?

Pick a good goalie + the cheapest playing 'keeper.

Spares yet another heartache each week and might pull even in the end.

Considering your overall ranking, definitely not. I'm tempted, but I'd still end up spending close to 2 mill more with that strategy (Hart and Ruddy?), than if I rotate cheaper goalkeepers.

Was planning Sorensen and Lindegaard, but I have a feeling Lindegaard will not play enough games to justify it.

Conventional wisdom says J Evans & Dempsey. However I like the idea of Jones and Zamora but only if Jones plays CM. He should be fit too by the way. One of the tweets say he should be ready for the Liverpool FA cup game this weekend

Ok, so I'm wildcarding in GW24 and have 1 freebie this week. Silva is in my wildcard plans, so given he is due a rise and Nani a fall tonight/tomorrow is it worth doing:

    a) Nani -> Silva tonight, or
    b) Wait until the last minute and if Nani is confirmed out then either Nani -> Silva or Valencia? If Nani is confirmed playing, Wilko -> Kelly and bench Caulker.

    Mignolet
    BAE, JEvans, Caulker
    Nani, Bale, Dempsey, Sessegnon
    RVP, Rooney, Adebayor

    Ruddy, Reo-Coker, Simpson, Wilkinson

I already have Dempsey and Sess otherwise they would be coming in. Problem with Walcott is he has looked aboslutely awful the last 5-10 weeks. After Arshavin he has been our worst player in that period. I'm thinking either Larsson (he's due and Norwich normally concede a few away from home) or Valencia (bang in form, but may be pushed to RB)

I think you should go Dempsey for sure, especially if you've already wildcarded. Dempsey is a goal hog and has great fixtures. 2 hat-tricks already this season for a midfielder - who else can do that from midfield!

Ahaa, same here! I think we are in the minority! In that case, I think you have a tough call between VDV, Valencia and Dempsey. All could score big this week. VDV has the best fixture, but Valencia and are on fire. Probably Dempsey for me.

I don't like it tbh. Would rather have Silva in there somehow and I think you have too much invested in defense. Enrique and BAE are no longer needed with their tough run of fixtures coming up. Also I'm not too sure about your other forwards as both seem out of form. Buzsaky seems like a bit of a risky bandwagon

4-3-3 most weeks, I presume? I like the defense, just wondering about Kos/Enrique. I'm guessing you want to keep Stur for a Ba-placekeeper ... Dropping one/two of those def's down might change Buzs to Valencia, or somesuch?

Just random stuff ... off the top of my head.

You will have major headaches deciding which defenders to bench every week even if you play 4-3-3 most weeks. Imo downgrade Enrique and Koscielny and get Silva.

Also I don't think United will keep many clean sheets in the next 5 games, so I wouldn't double up. I'm really unsure about Sturridge at the moment too.
