Bottom of the league entering December, the light appeared to be dying for Steve Kean and his beleaguered Blackburn side, but a series of determined displays in recent weeks have demonstrated that neither the players nor the manager have any intention of going gently into the night…

Attack appears to be the only form of defence available to a side with no clean sheets in the league all season, and with the Ewood Park faithful sometimes resembling a lynch mob it seems a kill-or-be-killed mentality on the pitch may be the only way to save the team from the drop and the manager from the gallows.

The loan signing of striker Anthony Modeste from Bordeaux is Steve Kean’s first significant foray into the transfer market this month, and seems indicative of the attacking mindset that is slowly propelling the club’s climb up the table. With Yakubu the only consistent goal scorer in a somewhat agricultural front line, Kean appeared relieved to have acquired an option with more cultivated qualities, commenting:

If you look at his attributes as a player, then he has something that we don’t have, he likes to play on the shoulder, he likes to run in behind. He can stretch the game and technically he is good.

THE STATISTICS

A product of the Nice youth system, Modeste made his full professional debut for the French Ligue 1 outfit back in 2007 and returned a modest 10 goals in 63 appearances over two seasons at the Stade Du Ray. Loaned out to Ligue 2 side Angers in the summer of 2009, Modeste relished regular starts and re-ignited his faltering prospects with an impressive haul of 21 goals in 37 appearances.

A 3.5m Euro move to Bordeaux the following season seemed to herald a rebirth for the young striker in the top-tier of French football, but a frustrating second season saw Modeste reduced to a peripheral role. As a result, Blackburn’s scouts endured a wasted trip earlier this month, as the forward was nothing more than an unused sub in Bordeaux’s clash with Valenciennes on the 14th January. Over a season and a half at the Stade Chaban-Delmas, though, Modeste has notched 15 goals in 63 appearances. He’s also represented the France U21 side on 15 occasions, scoring 6 times, but has yet to make the step up to full international level.

THE PROSPECTS

Modeste’s goal scoring record for Bordeaux is perhaps more impressive than it might initially appear, given his regular position on the substitutes’ bench. His arrival will give Kean more options in terms of formation- the Blackburn boss prefers a lone striker system and has started with a front two just twice this season. Aside from Yakubu, the forwards have failed miserably, with David Goodwillie and Jason Roberts netting 2 goals in twenty-five appearances between them.

Clearly, Bordeaux still feel the young striker has a promising future, having refused to countenance a clause in the loan contract that would allow Blackburn to seal a permanent deal at the end of the season. Watched closely by Arsenal following his fruitful spell at Angers, Modeste plainly has his admirers amongst European football’s elite, and with two disappointing spells at French Ligue 1 clubs already blotting his copybook, he will be anxious to prove himself at what could be a make-or-break loan spell in the Premier League.

With a Fantasy Premier League (FPL) valuation of 5.0, Modeste will primarily be competing with Danny Graham, Steve Morison and Leon Best for investment in a budget striker bracket that has so far failed to deliver the kind of output enjoyed by owners of Andy Carroll and Peter Odemwingie last season.

Blackburn’s fixtures are a mixed bag in the short term with trips to Arsenal and Manchester City sandwiched between some kinder home ties against Newcastle, QPR and Aston Villa. This spell should give Fantasy managers ample opportunity to assess Modeste’s potential in time for an enticing run of games for Blackburn between Gameweeks 27 and 31, and with goals the only likely path to salvation for Steve Kean’s side, Modeste should get every chance to make his mark in what could be a long and bloody battle against relegation.

I had Sturridge in my team, but thinking this morning that Welbeck leading the line at Utd is better than Sturridge on the wing.

Chelsea's fixtures for the next few are quite bad anyway.

Leaves me with strikeforce of RVP, Dzeko, Welbeck which looks alright for the next few then whoever is in least form out of Welbeck/Dzeko is the dropper for Ba.

Been deliberating over a change of tactics! Until now i've been convinced that spending big on at least 2 strikers was the most effective choice.

However while the good mids seem to be on form and piling on the points whereas the strikers have been hit and miss (so to speak) maybe its a plan to just play one expensive forward (say VP) and a couple of other on form cheapies. This would give the opportunity of playing the 5 on form mids! Thoughts?

Yep lots of good and affordable mids right now, but when Sunderland's fixtures toughen and City's get easier in a week's time it might be RVP/Aguero time again.

depending on your budget you can balance two big strikers with a cheapier one and some big and mid level mids and one or two bit hitters in the back

for example a team with kompany/richards and maybe one midpriced defender and some cheapies, silva, and then some combination of bale, dempsey, valencia, sess and walters and rvp, aguero and sturridge/ba/welbeck/fletcher etc

      for example my team:

      vorm, sorensen
      richards, enrique, simpson, brown, kelly
      silva, bale, dempsey, sess, walters
      rvp, aguero, sturridge

I think it works well because you can get two big strikers and rotate a cheaper one plus i get a very strong midfield. this might not work later on but besides silva there aren't any mids above 10 that I want so i have more room to fit in five mid priced to expensive mids

just my thoughts/how i set my team up but your strategy could work too. just think this way you can get a mix of two big forwards with 5 good mids

ill reply here to avoid having to return to the previous page. nice team mate! howd you get so much value pre wildcard though?

would take brown over evans for now. sunderland have gotten a couple cleanies recently and united have some tough games coming up so i don't expect too may cs from them. whats your thinking behind having moreira? would prefer someone who will actually play. sorensen, mingolet, kenny, linde all decent shouts.
and your midfield is the midfield i'd like to have. just i can't find a good way to get enough to upgrade walters to valencia.
forwards look good too. only question mark for me would be fletcher. could work out well but theres several other options around that price range that could do quite well too

nice team though mate! you plan on trying to catch any price rices or do you have more than enough budget/team value that it doesnt matter anymore?

Well as I said before Ive taken Nani out for Valencia and Walters out for Sess this week so i will catch the rises for them. I actually wildcarded 2nd week last year to catch the early risers won my mini league and finished 8k and a bit so I employed the same tactic this year, wildcarded at the 1st opportunity available, I know this is not to many peoples liking but my theory is that at the beginning more people play the game and have more enthusiasm therefore there is more likelyhood of transfer activity early doors and a good opportunity to boost your budget, I then get rid of players who are about to drop and tend to replace them with players who are going to rise, using total fpl and ctc this allows me in the 2nd half of the season to afford better players and make less transfers getting these players in, while my rivals have to make 2 or 3 changes to afford the player they want, my Moreira choice was solely to afford my wildcard team at the time, he will be replaced soon thanks for your insight on my team

This is a pretty good assessment.

I was new to FPL last season and started two weeks in. Played wild card early, but more to do with some rubbish choices that needing sorting than thinking about strategy.

This season I've learned (albeit a bit late) about the importance of building team value. And I've discovered Crack the Code etc. So the way I play next season will be a whole lot different! Agree about the early weeks. It's when people realise that Silva is going to be massive, or Adebayor is way too cheap, and that's when the big value can be made. I've paid the price this year, although the UCL game with players like Frei and Kroos has worked a treat. Next year I'll be following your strategy.

It felt wrong all the time, but after someone posted Bales stats vs top10 team (not he's fault anyway!) I ended up benching Bale instead of Fletcher. Lost five points there, but my own stupidity hurt even more.

Now I'm already getting tired of that Fletch boy so thinking maybe straight swap for Bobby Z - toughts?

If we only knew when Ba is coming back to town....if gw24 => I would keep Fletch and get two free transfers to get Ba in for gw24. If not, there's not much to do with my team before gw26 anyway, so I could do that Zamora move.

Vorm and Sorensen dont go well, they rotate home-away ok until GW28 but not after that and they both have difficult fixtures some weeks, like this one.

Vorm goes better with Kenny, Schwarzer or Krul and I think someone said Krul and Lindegaard go well together but I havent looked at that myself.

      Schwarzer | Vorm

Pretty much happy with my WC team now, just one or 2 questions that I can't answer on my own and would really appreciate some help with!

    Sorenson Mignolet

    Kompany/Richards Kelly Shotton Simpson Caulker

    Bale Silva Sess Dempsey McLean

    RVP Aguero Sturridge

I'm not sure that going so light at the back is wise and I need to decide whether or not to shift Sturridge and reinforce my backline. I haven't actually sold Vorm yet, I'm planning on swapping him for Mignolet and bringing in Caulker for BAE

I'm worried that I have too many potential rotation risks (i.e. Sorenson, Kelly, Shotton, maybe Caulker and Mignolet) but it allows me to have Sturridge over a cheaper, less productive forward.

My question is should I shift Sturridge, keep BAE and upgrade Kelly to Senderos and maybe Caulker to Rangel?

Sturridge might come good... so it is a gamble, but i dumped him for Welbeck this week..
Sorensen could easily be dropped after the weekends performance, and i agree about your other backline players... you are gambling on them not being rotated.. if you want more security at the back you need to upgrade a bit...

Yeah I know what you mean about Sturridge being a gamble but to get rid would surely be a bigger gamble?

I'm fine with having one or two players rotated at the back and my bench defenders coming on.

I've brought McLean in because I think he's much better value than Moses or Dyer. He'll hardly play anyway unless someone in my front 7 are injured/banned.

          Cheers for your thoughts

Personally I think you'd be fine with that.

You'd only ever be looking to play 3 at the back and you should always be able to do that with Kompany, Simpson and Caulker even if Shotton and Kelly don't play.

        Agreed.

Also I don't think I'm missing out too much by not having BAE, I only really expect one or two assists and maybe 5 cleanies between now and the end of the season, although he does has Wigan and Newcastle at home in the next 3.

I'm not going to get a player in just because he plays for United.

Rooney and Nani aren't playing well and Wellbeck's and Valencia's stats aren't that great and they are rotation risks. I'd rather have Sturridge/Ba/Yakubu and Dempsey

I'll admit I've got my eye on Lindy or Evans but I have until GW28 to get them in!

    Morning all,

Had a great week last week after playing my WC, but not having Valencia is annoying me.

    Vorm (Ruddy)
    Kelly, Enrique, Simpson, (Huth, Cahill)
    Bale, Sess, Silva, Dempsey (Dyer)
    RVP, Aguero, Sturridge

    Have 0.1m in the bank.

Sturridge and Aguero are worrying me, and Im liking the look of Dyer > Valencia & Aguero > Zamora/Welbeck, but it would involve a hit.

Should I save the transfer and give Sturr & Aguero another week? If they dont deliver, then I can do it next week for free yeh?!

Downgrade Aguero > Dzeko to finance Dyer > Valencia, Dzeko should be guaranteed to start with Mario serving his ban.

I currently have Rooney/RVP/Sturridge. I was considering changing it around a bit to Welbeck/RVP and one other.

No strikers are a must right now, truly. RVP would be at the top of the list, there are a lot of other options - Welbeck/Rooney/Zamora/Fletcher/Morison/Sturridge/Aguero/Ade.

You'd be better off sorting your midfield out first so you have a price bracket you are looking for, then choosing.

Not his fault - that card waving fool dropped him after his 4-goals Vs Spurs... tried to be clever, benching him against Wigan (the game after) and selected Tevez who missed a pen that game.

Lost his rhythm after Spurs, and then played intermittently like a light switch with Champs League games...

Mancini is a fool - he's runied Dzeko this season who could have been much much more...

Doesn't matter a great deal, his points per minute is pretty good. I swapped him out on the week of the derby and was initially relieved to see him benched. Then he comes on and scores 2.

I don't actually rate him much, a profligate mans Peter Crouch, but my 1 year old son could score goals in that team.
