Arguably the most imbalanced international break of the season, involving both vital World Cup play-off matches and friendlies of questionable relevance, kicks off with significant wins for Switzerland and Croatia.

But it is events off the pitch that are of more interest as injuries continue to stack up to trouble Fantasy managers.

Here are the first set of notes from the November international break.

The injuries pile up

An almost farcical spate of withdrawals is in danger of tipping England’s friendly with Germany the wrong side of meaningless tonight.

The latest member of Gareth Southgate’s increasingly beleaguered squad to pull out was Stoke City keeper Jack Butland, who broke a finger in training.

The stopper, in 3.2% of FPL teams, will be assessed by his club today ahead of a pair of attractive trips to Brighton and Crystal Palace.

More significantly, the 8.8%-owned Spurs defender Jan Vertonghen will miss Belgium’s friendly with Mexico this evening after picking up an ankle injury.

The centre-half has played every minute of Spurs’ league season so far and is our preferred route into the Spurs defence in light of compatriot Toby Alderweireld’s hamstring injury and coach Mauricio Pochettino’s consistent rotation of wing-backs.

Belgium boss Roberto Martinez was quick to play down the extent of Vertonghen’s problem.

“Jan won’t be in the team tomorrow. He is suffering a little pain in the ankle, but it isn’t serious.”

All eyes will now turn to Belgium’s second friendly of the break, against Japan on Tuesday, for the involvement, or otherwise, of Vertonghen.

Spurs travel to Arsenal for the north London derby on Saturday lunchtime.

Vertonghen’s international team-mate Michy Batshuayi will play no part in either of Belgium’s friendlies, however.

The Chelsea striker has a foot injury and has now returned to his club ahead of next weekend’s away match against West Brom.

Welcome break for Salah…

There are no such concerns for Mohammed Salah, who remains in Merseyside over these two weeks.

The Egyptian is now owned by 39.7% and they’ve been treated to a fine recent run of form in which he’s hit three goals and provided an assist over the last three Gameweeks.

As a result, he’s the most purchased player of Gameweek 12 to date, with more than 134,000 snapping him up.

Salah has been a key component of the Reds attack this season – he’s been involved in all 11 league matches, and a further six Champions League fixtures, thus far.

With Egypt’s friendly in the United Arab Emirates, scheduled for last night, postponed, Salah called to be omitted from their squad for their final World Cup Qualifier with Ghana on Sunday.

Head coach Hector Cuper duly obliged, with Salah left at home for what is a somewhat irrelevant fixture. Egypt have already secured their place at Russia 2018 – courtesy of a Salah penalty.

His owners will now look forward to seeing a well-rested Salah available for next Saturday’s Anfield clash with Southampton, an encounter which follows his season-high 15-point return against West Ham.

Elsewhere…

West Brom trio Jonny Evans, Gareth McAuley and Chris Brunt all started Northern Ireland’s World Cup qualifying play-off first leg with Switzerland.

Southampton midfielder Steven Davis also played for the Ulstermen, whose chances of making it to Russia next year were dealt a major blow by a 1-0 home defeat.

Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka and Stoke midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri played the full 90 minutes for the Swiss, with the latter’s shot leading to the controversial handball decision that settled the tie from the penalty spot.

Should Northern Ireland fail to overturn the deficit, veterans McAuley and Brunt could well retire from international football to boost their Fantasy appeal.

Croatia all but booked their place in next year’s finals with a 4-1 home play-off win over Greece in which Liverpool defender

Dejan Lovren was involved throughout. Everton winger Nikola Vlasic was handed a late run-out for the Croats.

The second legs of both play-off ties take place on Sunday.

Scotland lost a home friendly with the Netherlands 1-0.

Liverpool full-back Andrew Robertson and West Brom midfielder Matt Phillips started for the Scots, while the Dutch fielded a strong Premier League contingent of Virgil van Dijk, Nathan Aké, Timothy Fosu-Mensah, Daley Blind and Georginio Wijnaldum.

On-loan Crystal Palace defender Fosu-Mensah played 72 minutes, while Brighton midfielder Davy Propper missed out having picked up a “minor ankle injury”. Dutch manager Dick Advocaat expects Propper to be back in contention for a friendly against Romania in Bucharest on Tuesday.

Bournemouth winger Ryan Fraser came on for the Scots after 71 minutes.

The international break actually started with two Wednesday friendlies.

Burnley midfielder Johann Berg Gudmundsson played the full match as Iceland lost 2-1 at home to the Czech Republic. Everton’s Gylfi Sigurdsson was an unused sub.

Meanwhile, Huddersfield striker Steve Mounie played 88 minutes for Benin in a 1-1 draw away at Congo.

Which position is most important so far this season in terms of value, and which formation is best to take advantage of said value?

Ive been switching between 3-4-3 and 4-3-3 mainly due to my Kane Aguero Morata front line. I just feel like having Tom Carroll, Atsu and Shaqiri in Midfield, makes the squad look thin, upgrading Atsu is a must this GW i feel!

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Best ever individual international performance

To mark the occasion of England selecting perhaps their worst ever starting XI I thought I'd look back to happier times and canvass views on the best ever solo performance in a game.

I'm looking for a performance where they drove their team on and were the key influence.

This can be any player, from any era, from any international side.

Maradona versus England at the Mexico World Cup is perhaps the most obvious example.

But what other great performances have there been over the years.

ronaldo vs argentina 2004. you sort of knew deep down he was starting a downward spiral but performances like this really perked-up your denial.

Pele v England 1970 World Cup, Bobby Moore in the same match. Pele stated at the time that it was the best defensive performance by a player he had ever seen. Pele was still world class in the match and Brazil won. Maradona in all the matches in Mexico 86, he singlehandedly won the World cup for Argentina. I have arguments all the time with mates about Maradona v Messi. Messi as had the greater club career but Maradona for me is a class ahead when it comes to performing on the International stage.

Paul Gascoigne in every match at Italia 90, the best player in the world at the time.

Geoff Hurst World cup final 1966, Obviously!

Zinedine Zidane World cup final 1998, unplayable.

Have to be the England Germany game, 2010. At half-time, the England players were tired, deflated, and dehyrdated.

So what I consider the finest individual performance, was the heroic efforts of the team waterboy, Jack Stiles. He made sure water and electrolyte fluids were distributed in a timely and efficient matter, also communicating with players to ensure their thirst was quenched. The England manager at the time, Fabio Capello, stated (paraphrasing), "... each of the player looked refreshed and like their thirsts were fully quenced. I usually have a spare (water bottle) handy in case
one or more lads were not sufficiently hyrdated, but I was pleased to see it was no the case this time. They were the most refreshed half-time I have ever had the privelege of seeing, and its all thanks to the heroic hydrating efforts of Jacko (Stiles). I don't know where the lads would be without him, he is the backbone of this team"

Jack reportedly received a heroes welcome at his local pub, where his thirst was quenched even more. Although he became an alcoholic shortly after this incident, and died of massive liver failure, he will be forever be remembered and in our English hearts.

    Morata or Aguero?

With Batshuayi out Morata will probably play every game, especially since Conte doesn't trust Batshuayi. Is the security of starts enough to overlook the fact that Aguero is a better option when he plays? Aguero might be rested every third game with the upcoming fixture congestion.

he is first choice but will be benched from time to time or subbed but still very good pick imo

I personally think Morata is a better pick. The city rotation wrecks my head. Think with the fixtures for Chelsea he could score very well over the coming 5/6 weeks

Who is 1st priority to lose in the coming week?

    A. Luiz - might not be a starter anymore

If you need to make a decision before next gameweek then I would prefer to lose Luiz over Jesus.

However Luiz has only been dropped for one game and if he starts against West Brom then I'd keep him until/if its likely he will be dropped often.

Jesus. Both have gametime risk atm but Jesus is more expensive, should be able to get more upside by changing him (eg morata)

Think my move this gameweek will be Lascelles > Mee / Lowton depending on any further injuries. Apart from that gtg?

    De Gea

Daniels / Kiko Fermenia / Mee

    Ramsey / Sterling / Salah / Chuopo-moting

    Aguero / Kane / Morata

    Elliot / Naughton / Carroll / Long

Haven't looked at clean sheets odds yet, but I would have guessed Naughton vs Burnley would be slightly better then Kiko vs WestHam? Swansea defend well away and Watford are worse at home, but I'm not 100% on that. might be worth looking at nearer the games

Yeah. Naughton being relegated to 3rd sub I think, they look diabolical.

      8/10
good team, Naughton the only weak link on the pitch.
Easy fix, plenty of 4.5m defenders to replace.
With your existing defence you could consider Duffy?

I have no free transfers left so next week I will change:

Hunemeier > Dann, Mee, or Moreno....

    2FT, any ideas?
I was thinking Luiz to Jones this week and then Hazard to Sane and Vardy to Morata for next gameweek.

    Ryan
    Duffy Ward Luiz
    Hazard Salah Richarlison Choupo
    Kane Vardy Jesus

    Bench: Elliot, Otamendi, RLC, Hune

don't you think that Pep loves Jesus and will play him in every game by giving him 60 and just benching once verey 5-6 games? He start on the bench last game but still scored. I think he is still good FPL pick

    Current WC team

    Pope Elliot
    Jones Daniels Ward Duffy Chilwell
    Salah Sterling Sane Richarlison Zaha
    Kane Morata Murray

    Thinking of doing
Pope, Jones, Zaha > DDG, Verts, RLC

    Worth it?

Presume you'll bench Murray, is it worth spending the extra over say Calvert-Lewin/Niasse if he's a bench warmer? same with zaha, RLC seems a good shout anyways?
      Murray > niasse (+0.9m)
      Zaha > RLC (+2.3m)

with the saved you can easily do
chilwell > Vert. or my preference would be a Chelsea defender like azpill
Still leave you with 0.8m ITB
