A third of the season is almost done, and Burnley’s defence is riding high as a source of Fantasy returns.

After a surprising debut campaign in which a recurring series of defensive heroics – particularly at Turf Moor – saw the Clarets survive in 16th place, their sophomore season has been altogether more impressive.

Sean Dyche’s side sit in seventh place – tied on points with both Liverpool and Arsenal –a nd have conceded fewer goals than all but the top three of Manchester City, Manchester United and Spurs.

Can their defence continue to perform at such a high level throughout the campaign? And who among their array of options looks best placed to prosper from this upturn in solidity?

Our latest Technical Area article for members is heading north in search of Fantasy value from the Burnley backline.

You realise you asked 9 times whether you should wildcard. 14 people said no, 4 said yes. Then you wildcard anyway. Was there any point in filling the comments with those posts?!

He didn't. He was discussing transfers and they got onto discussing swapping goalkeepers and the like and the show finished before he stated his captain. It will be either Kane or Lukaku I imaging though.

Anyone else here doubling up on Burnley defenders? I have Pope and Mee on WC but have always preferred to hedge my bets and not double up on defenders.

DEfender + goalie is not really doubling up, as you can rotate defence and goalkeepers independently

I had two free transfers and went -4, in order to bring in Pope, Moreno and Lukaku in place of Krul, VVD and Jesus.

    Elliot, Pope
    Naughton, Moreno, Otamendi, Dann, Daniels
    Silva, Salah, Zaha, RLC, Carroll
    Lukaku, Kane, Morata

    Right or wrong move?

Let's look at who Burnley have played so far.

    che(a) 2 - 3
    WBA(h) 0 - 1
    tot(a) 1 - 1
    CPL(h) 1 - 0
    liv(a) 1 - 1
    HUD(h) 1 - 0
    eve(a) 0 - 1
    WHU(h) 1 - 1
    mci(a) 3 - 0
    NEW(h) 1 - 0
    sou(a) 0 - 1

There defence is clearly strong, even predictable; only conceding more than 1 goal to Chelsea and Man City, both away matches. However, the point I want to make is that fortune has been on their side in terms of when they've played the teams they have. Let me explain.

Aside from WBA at home which they uncharacteristically lost (West Brom started the season well with 2 CS), they then went on to face CPL, HUD, WHU and NEW at home. All favourable fixtures for clean sheets; Palace and West Ham struggling under FdB and Bilic, and Huddersfield and Newcastle more defensive oriented teams thus far.

I would suggest that away games against Chelsea, Spurs, Liverpool and Man City account for the poor away stats highlighted above - not that Burnley are playing any worse away from home. But by being competitive in each of those games (except at City.. who is?), they've carried confidence into the Everton and Southampton away games and picked up further clean sheets. Again, two teams struggling to click with very little goal threat.

Burnley have Swansea up next at home - perhaps another CS unless Abraham can spark Swansea into life. They then have a run of games where I'm not sure clean sheets will follow.

    ARS(h)
    bou(a)
    lei(a)
    WAT(h)

I'm going to suggest the next CS won't come until Stoke at home and Brighton away.

      • 9 Years

Totally agree. As i also wrote Burnley may keep a clean sheet against Swansea but i think they will concede in all 3 next fixtures (ARS,Bou,LEI).

      Similar situation we could say is with Everton if you see their opponents in all the away games.[MCI (A) 1 - 1, CHE (A) 2 - 0, MUN (A) 4 - 0, BHA (A) 1 - 1, LEI (A) 2 - 0].They played against 3 of the top 4,against superb Brighton and Leicester with a new manager.

      1. Twisted Saltergater
        • 16 Years

Yeah, even looking at Burnley's away games, those fixtures had the potential to upset their home form and we could've seen Burnley struggling instead. Dyche doing a great job.

I do agree that the fixtures don't look too promising. And after Brighton it's rather bad. I'm on WC and thinking of doubling up with Pope and Mee but don't feel to confident. Pope gets saves and bonus points though.

If Jones is 100 % out I might get De Gea and a 4.5 def in stead of Pope and Jones. I've never spent more than 4.5 on a goalkeeper but it would be nice to have a sure starter from United defence. Pope is also a transfer waiting to happen but still no news on when Heaton's expected to return.
