A third of the season is almost done, and Burnley’s defence is riding high as a source of Fantasy returns.

After a surprising debut campaign in which a recurring series of defensive heroics – particularly at Turf Moor – saw the Clarets survive in 16th place, their sophomore season has been altogether more impressive.

Sean Dyche’s side sit in seventh place – tied on points with both Liverpool and Arsenal –a nd have conceded fewer goals than all but the top three of Manchester City, Manchester United and Spurs.

Can their defence continue to perform at such a high level throughout the campaign? And who among their array of options looks best placed to prosper from this upturn in solidity?

Our latest Technical Area article for members is heading north in search of Fantasy value from the Burnley backline.

    Bench 3:
    a. Moreno (SOU)
    b. Mee (SWA)
    c. Daniels (HUD)
    d. Duffy (STK)
    e. RLC (EVE)
    f. Abraham (bur)

At lease one of e and f must be benched

    Bottomed, so repost my question:

Who do you prefer, and why?

    B) Richarlison

      Richarlison.

Great stats, slightly cheaper, one of the main attacking outlets in an attacking team and the return of Benteke could dent Zaha's appeal.

Which one looks better? A or B?

    A) 4-4-2
    DDG
    AZPI Mee Daniels Moreno
    Salah Sane Sterling Richarlison
    Kane Morata

    Elliot Dann Niasse RLC
    0.3 ITB

    B) 3-5-2
    COURTOIS
    JONES Mee Daniels Moreno
    Salah Sane Sterling Richarlison GROß
    Kane Morata

    Elliot Dann Niasse Moreno
    0.3 ITB

So in effect DDG, Azpi and RLC as a sub with Moreno starting vs. Courtois, Jones and Groß with Moreno as a sub?

Of course I will have quite a few transfers before the Xmas period to shift players around.

Very close to my drafts. I'm closer to A than B atm. DDG will play all matches while Jones might not play this weekend and potenially many more. José said he played vs Chelsea because it was a big game. If he favours Jones in the big matches he could be rested in the easy games, especially with the tight fixture list.

On Wildcard and wondering what to do about Phil Jones...

Is it worth having him and starting him, with Daniels first sub? Seems strange having a player with an injury/knock on wildcard but he’s someone I want going forward.

    1. Going Home
      • 14 Years
      8 years, 22 days ago

Did you already have him? If so, keep. If not, you can bring him in later on for the same price/less

      1. Football Weekender
        • 9 Years
        8 years, 21 days ago

Not owned him this season - brought him in for £5.4m as soon as the WC was triggered.

The issue with not having him and bringing him in further down the line is that’s a “planned transfer”, which never seems to work out on a wildcard. Something else will inevitably come up!

          • 14 Years

I'll be honest, if I were putting together a ££ no object FPL team for the next two months, Jones wouldn't be in it. I can't ship him now as I'd lose value and will want him when they go back to one game a week in January/February

Interesting, good point about the rotation. Most teams tend to stick with their CBs week in, week out but Utd have such a surplus in that position I guess rotation is inevitable.

As I’ve mentioned below though, I’m drawn to Utd’s next three fixtures from a defensive aspect. It’s a short term vs long term issue I suppose.

I’d stay away from Jones if on a WC. No way he’s going to play every game from now until the new year. Spurs & Chelsea defenders look the best picks but they’re too expensive perhaps.

          1. Football Weekender
            • 9 Years
            8 years, 21 days ago

It’s Utd’s next three fixtures which are affecting my judgement maybe. I think they’re nailed for at least 2 cleanies so I really want a piece of that. I guess I’ll just wait on Jose’s presser and make a late call on it.

Yeah, price is the issue with those Spurs & Chelsea assets and the value picks like Trippier & Christensen aren’t nailed.

Smalling could be straight in for him in that Utd team. He’s started the last 5 in the league and almost every game in the other competitions, so Jose seems to trust him.

On a WC, would you keep Jones and hope he plays? Have good autosubs so can accept it if he just misses this GW

Dunk or Duffy, who will get more attacking points?

Defence is looking a right mess! 0 FT 0.2 ITB, any suggestions?

    De Gea
    Mee, JONES*, MARIAPPA* (Cedric, Hegazi)

Worth taking a hit to bring someone in? Hegazi and Cedric surely going to end up with 2 points (or less), Jones and Mariappa unlikely to play...

    Cheers

its impossible to always have favourable fixtures every week without taking a ton of hits , so just play what you have and hope for the best

    Better 1st bench for jones?
Abraham - have two Burnley defence if he ruins their CS will make it less painful
Naughton - probably a good chance of clean sheet but wouldn’t be surprised by a 2 pointer
