Jack Wilshere suffers a setback in his recovery from an ankle injury. Alan Pardew admits he is unsure whether Demba Ba and Papiss Demba Cisse will play at Blackburn next midweek, Frank Lampard is out of Chelsea’s FA Cup game with QPR and Chris Samba takes Blackburn’s owners to task as he looks for a way out of Ewood Park:

Arsene Wenger confirmed earlier this afternoon that Jack Wilshere has suffered a setback in training. The midfielder has yet to play for Arsenal this season but had been on course to return from an ankle injury next month. While The Guardian claimed earlier today that Wilshere could be at risk for the season, Wenger refused to scaremonger, saying only:

Wilshere had a little setback. We don’t know how bad it is. I can’t give you any news on Jack because I could be wrong.

The Gunners boss also revealed that Bacary Sagna may return after long-term absence this weekend, with Mikel Arteta and Thierry Henry also standing a good chance of making the Villa game.

Andre Villas-Boas admitted Chelsea will be without Frank Lampard and John Obi Mikel for their FA Cup game with QPR. Lampard has failed to recover from a calf injury picked up against Norwich last weekend, though the Blues boss is hopeful he will be ready for the midweek trip to Swansea.

Alan Pardew’s Thursday press conference centred mainly on Senegal’s exit in the African Cup of Nations. With Newcastle front pair Demba Ba and Papiss Demba Cisse both flying home on Monday after their country’s final group game against Libya on Sunday night, there’s a possibility one or both could be ready to face Blackburn on Wednesday evening. Fantasy managers have already been drafting in the strike duo since Senegal’s omission. Over 8,000 have transferred in Ba, the fourth highest Fantasy Premier League (FPL) player to date this season, while new signing Cisse, who was priced at 7.0 by FPL yesterday, has attracted just over 200 in comparison. Though Pardew admitted he was delighted to have them back, he was cagey over their prospects of appearing at Ewood Park:

It’s not as simple as them playing at Blackburn. We have to contact Senegal and they might want the squad to fly back together or whatever. I really don’t know what the chances are, I really could not put a percentage on it. But the plus side is they are coming back to Newcastle early and they will definitely be involved against Aston Villa. Cissé has literally only had eight hours here. He has to get used to that number nine shirt.

Sir Alex Ferguson remained vague over Man United’s injury situation this morning. Speaking ahead of the weekend FA Cup trip to Liverpool, Ferguson revealed no specifics, much to the frustration on Fantasy owners of Nani and Phil Jones- both have been reported as being possible absentees for the next few weeks. The United boss failed to elaborate on reports that Wayne Rooney hasn’t trained all week and would only say:

I can’t give you much of an update on injuries. Hopefully we’ll have two or three training this morning and we’ll be better by tomorrow. It is not the best situation for us.

Chris Samba has hit out at Blackburn’s owners Venkys as he tries to engineer a move away from Ewood Park. The Rovers skipper has already seen a transfer request turned down this month and with four more days left before the January window closes, a furious Samba has lashed out at those in charge, as he continues to look for a way out:

Blackburn need players who are 100% for the club — and I’m not. The only way to solve this is for them to let me go. It will be very difficult for me to play for this team again. I’m at the end of the road here. I’m not going to change so, for their good and mine, they must sell me now. I’ve got nothing against the manager. It’s not like he’s been given £100million to spend, he’s trying to do the best he can with what he has. This is between me and the owners. It’s personal.

Marc Tierney is available for Norwich’s FA Cup trip to West Brom. The left-back has missed his side’s last five league games due to a groin injury but looks set to return to the first-team for the Hawthorns showdown this weekend, according to Paul Lambert. Tierney had previously started every one of the Canaries’ first eighteen gameweeks.

Nicklas Bendtner is expected to be sidelined for a number of weeks with facial injuries. The Sunderland forward was taken off early in last Saturday’s game against Swansea after receiving an accidental kick to the face by Angel Rangel and with Martin O’Neill admitting the Dane’s injuries are worse than initially anticipated, it affords the like of Connor Wickham, Ji Dong-won and fit-again Fraizer Campbell a first-team opportunity up front for the Black Cats:

He’s got a bit more than a broken nose. It’s difficult to put a timescale on it, but it’s going to be lengthy. We thought at one stage he might be okay. The early signs, even on Sunday morning, were that it looked as if it might be okay. But he’s going to be out for a number of weeks now, which is definitely a blow to us. He has a few cracks and we just have to bide our time with that. That’s a big blow to us and to the lad himself, who was beginning to enjoy a decent spell of football for us.

Steve Sidwell has recovered from a knock that forced him off in Fulham’s 5-2 win over Newcastle last weekend and is available for the FA Cup game with Everton. Moussa Dembele misses out after failing to recover from a hip injury, while the club’s official website has revealed both Orlando Sa and Mark Schwarzer are “a week or so” away from returning to action. Schwarzer’s return will, of course, be of particular significance- the Australian has failed to feature since the end of gameweek 15 but is expected to reclaim his spot between the sticks from David Stockdale as soon as he is fit.

David Moyes is set to be without the majority of his injured players for the Cottagers clash. First-choice centre-halves Sylvain Distin and Phil Jagielka are still sidelined, meaning Shane Duffy is likely to continue alongside Johnny Heitinga in the heart of the back-four. Leon Osman, Seamus Coleman and Jack Rodwell are all still out, while Ross Barkley continued his comeback from a knee problem with a midweek run-out for the Toffees youth team. One piece of good news for Moyes is the return of Tony Hibbert at right-back.

I've been looking at gk combos and have noticed that when Newcastle play away Sunderlands home fixture is often against a top 6 team.

Im now re-thinking my Krul and mignolet combo. Anyone have any better solutions?

    Helgusson owners beware!!!

QPR are facing a massive injury crisis ahead of tomorrow's FA Cup fourth round tie against Chelsea.

Apart from long term problems Keiron Dyer and Ali Faurlin, four more of Mark Hughes's squad will definitely miss the high noon showdown - and a further four face a race against time to face their west London rivals.

The major concern is last week's scorer against Wigan, Akos Buzsaky (Achilles) and striker Heidar Helguson (groin). Neither have trained all week, and defender Danny Gabbidon (hip) and Matt Connolly are also doubtful.

Armand Traore and Adel Taarabt are away with their countries at the African Cup of Nations, and the work permit for new left-back Nigerian Taye Taiwo, on loan from AC Milan, failed to come through in time.

"As far as I know, Taye is in the queue at the embassy still," said Hughes. "We had hoped to get an extension from the FA for a deadline where we could register him, but that sadly is not the case."

cheers guys so here it is. I am drafting Taiwo in to my wc team, but with the Hughes effect beginning to hit I want some QPR coverage higher up. I will have an RvP, Aguero, Zamora strikeforce (with Zamora becoming Ba GW26 and Aguero - Rooney GW28) so it has to be midfield. I'm convinced by Buzaky's minutes yet, so I wanted thoughts on Barton and especially SWP.

Barton? Never a big FPL scorer. SWP? Frankly he's looked tired at times and most of his shots have gone wide. He's capable of scoring in bursts but has never been consistent in front of goal either.

My advice? Wait and see who else we get in. Moses is rumoured to be high on the wish-list. Maybe if we get him I'll jump that bandwagon 😉

No, they sacked Warnock because he was tactically inept at this level and had lost the dressing room.

I have limited knowledge, but I would say that Barton is the one to have there, with a few set pieces etc, and SWP's lack of form. He is a bit of a card magnet however, and according to HDAL further up the page, the Hoops are struggling with injuries which may lessen Barton/SWP's output.

I wouldn't go overboard on our players at the moment.

Hughes is, rightly in my opinion, building from the back and I think the emphasis will be on keeping clean sheets.

For that reason I'd go for Taiwo, Kenny or Onuoha as they may be more consistent points scorers.

If you want an outfielder go for Buszacky imo. Buy make sure you have a good bench if you do.

Only problem is it rules out Etherington as my 4th mid option. I do like it, but Schwarzer and Lind/Sorensen also looks good, plus I'm not sure I'd want to use a spot on Lind when I can get Evans and I'd want my last slot free for Rooney in GW28

Well not necessarily, I was just looking at the options you were pondering at the time. Either way, by the numbers, Krul/Lind is the best rotation and is fairly cheap to boot, but it might not be the best in practice due to the other defensive options for each side. Evans may be more nailed on, Krul is 0.8m more than the cheapest NEW defender.

Those reasons are partly why I'm probably gonna go Vorm/Mignolet despite their relative lack of rotation (average gpg GW23-31 of 1.18) because they're the cheapest way to cover all the defences I like. Could go even cheaper and go Vorm -> Lind, Evans -> Caulker but just worried about Lind's rotation risk.

If the difference in price between Schwarzer and Krul makes Etherington too pricey I'd say that's not the end of the world (don't rate Stoke) but if you really want him, Schwarzer and Lind still have an average gpg of 1.07 so still pretty good.

    Who to bench next gameweek?

    Mignolet (NOR), Vorm (CHE)

Senderos (WBA), Enrique (wol), Smalling (STO), Santon (bla), Kompany (eve)

Sessegnon (NOR), Bale (WIG), Ben Arfa (bla), Silva (eve), Valencia (STO)

Van Persie (bol), Sturridge (swa), Fletcher (LIV)

.....currently it is Sturridge, Santon and Enrique because even though all 5 defenders have good games, I'm not going with only 1 striker. Suggestions?

I'm doing both. Exactly the 4 names you've mentioned actually. The rotation is great, and both United and Newcastle can be relied on for CS's in their easy games.

Also, I'm 100 points behind in a mini league, so I'm gambling with the double ups. It should pay off in this case. The biggest worry is Lindegaard rotation, really.

I'm looking more at the united fixtures from GW 28 onwards. Till then, you can play Linde in 23 and 26, Krul in 24 and 27. It's only 25 where you don't get a great fixture, but after that, United look great for clean sheets.

I'm sticking with one United attacker (Aguero to Rooney in time for GW 28), but I see why you might want to get 2.

I want to keep Enrique for when Lpool fixtures become good again. so I am looking at something like this for my GW24 WC:

            Vorm Lindy/Sorensen
            Richards Enrique Simpson Evans Kelly/Shotton
            Bale Silva Valencia Walters Sess

What's wrong with Given + Sorenson? Look at it. Doesn't get a mention AT ALL on here. Only downside (apart from neither keeper playing for Citeh or Liverpool) is that Sorenson may be rotated with Begovic in the future.

I always look for reasonable defences with reasonable fixtures and where the keeper is a cheap way into their defence. Neither Krul or Vorm tick those boxes if you're getting onboard one.
