Watford concede two goals in the dying minutes to throw away the points at Selhurst Park, but for Fantasy managers, it is injury concerns over Richarlison and Kiko Femenia that prove most troublesome.

Marco Silva’s side bossed the first period against Crystal Palace and it was Richarlison who inevitably proved the catalyst.

The Brazilian was a livewire on the Watford left, running at Timothy Fosu-Mensah and raiding the box with regularity.

His evening started with a sixth assist of the season when his deep cross was met smartly by Daryl Janmaat. That ended a run of three Gameweeks without attacking returns, to give him a goal or an assist in eight of his last 12 appearances.

Once again, Richarlison could and should have fetched a bigger tally. He provided Troy Deeney with a big chance later in first half, then missed an easy opportunity himself after the break – one of three shots on goal in Tuesday’s encounter.

But more significantly, he appeared to suffer a tweaked groin late on and was replaced with six minutes remaining.

There’s little or no information on the injury, though he did attempt to run it off and took his place on the Watford bench once withdrawn.

Silva had talked of the need to protect Richarlison before the Palace clash, hinting that he may hand the starlet at rest at some stage.

“We need to manage him if we feel he’s too tired. He doesn’t look tired but he cannot play a high level every time. We expect a player with his skills to play at a high level all the time but it is not possible. We need to take care of him, as he’s 20 years old.”

However, his performance before the injury was not befitting of a player suffering fatigue. Richarlison was full of running and always a danger to the Eagles defence.

We can now only await Silva’s update before the Gameweek 18 meeting with Huddersfield Town.

Femenia return short lived

Richarlison’s late replacement was full-back Kiko Femenia, who returned from a muscle injury to line up among the Watford substitutes.

However, the Spaniard played just over 11 minutes before pulling up and walking off the field of play.

It was a bizarre and unwanted appearance for his 303,000 owners, who lost their auto-sub and gained zero points.

The right-back had been cited as the optimum route into Watford’s defence over a period of improving fixtures.

Crucially, Femenia offered attacking potential and a propensity to gain bonus points – he has earned bonus in each of Watford’s five clean sheets so far.

But with no word on this latest injury, we can only presume that he has aggravated his muscular problem once again, potentially ruling him out of Gameweek 18.

That will force us to switch our sights when contemplating the Hornets rearguard.

Janmaat is a temptation given his similar potential to raid forward, illustrated by that goal at Selhurst Park – a second of the season.

But with little information on Femenia’s term of absence, Christian Kabasele appears to be a more secure avenue to explore.

The Belgian centre-back is cheaper at 4.6 and has started every match since Gameweek 3. With two goals this season, he also poses a threat at set-pieces.

Marvin Zeegelaar – at just 4.4 – is certainly the other consideration once he returns from his ban for Gameweek 20. That’s just in time for back-to-back home matches with Leicester City and Swansea City when he will be expected to oust Jose Holebas at left-back.

The supporting cast of Adrian Marriappa (4.1), Sebastian Prodl (4.3) and Miguel Britos (4.4) could all offer alternatives, but the security of their starts is still in question.

Palace feel Sakho absence

Wilfried Zaha was undoubtedly the most notable Palace asset on show from an attacking perspective. The winger conjured both their late goals, earning an assist for James McArthur’s winner following his run and cross.

But with our midfield slots so in demand, it was the Eagles defence that had provoked more recent interest.

With Mamadou Sakho sidelined through injury, Roy Hodgson’s rearguard was breached early and struggled to cope with Richarlison and the Watford attack.

The Frenchman’s calf injury is set to keep him sidelined into the New Year, so the prospects of the Eagles defence from a Fantasy perspective has to be questioned, including the viability of Julian Speroni (4.1) in goal.

Our concerns are hardly eased by an injury to Fosu-Mensah and a fifth booking of the season for midfield enforcer Luka Milivojevic, who will miss the Gameweek 18 meeting at Leicester.

Scout Pick Community Champion Lottery – Gameweek 18

Once again we are on the look out for a champion to represent the community to take on the Scout Picks and win the chance of a prize.

If you want to take part please email your FFS name and FPL ID number to community@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk .

Really quick turnaround, with the champion selected at random at 9:00am tomorrow (Thurs) and then asked to submit their XI by 12noon by Friday by emailing me at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk

We only need 11 picks and please be mindful of the 84m budget. There’s no captain in the picks either and please stick to a designated FPL formation, including no more than three players from one team. No captain or chips will be applied.

At the end of the season the champion who beats the picks by the highest margin will win a £100 Amazon voucher.

The champion will be revealed in a midweek Scout Squad article, which will outline our initial thinking around the picks. Our and the champions picks will be revealed as usual in the Scout Picks article.

Should the community “Champion” fail to provide an initial or final Scout Pick selection, then an “Assistant Manager” chosen by us, will gain control of the selection to represent the community for the Gameweek in question.

Injuries to Salah and Richarlison aren't as bad, as everyone has them. But when your hard earned differentials get crocked, it's so frustrating.

It's not true though. Salah had an issue with his hamstring against Everton that the early substitution prevented from becoming an injury.

I think reading between the lines, you're right that an 'injury' is probably too strongly worded.

However if he tweaked something on Sunday then why would you risk an injury today in a relatively straightforward game (or at least start on the bench)?

I think this the most likely outcome. Bench start and a run around from 60-70 mins and I say that as a Salah owner!

Wouldn't worry about it too much, I'm sure he'll get a ten minute run around at the end when Liverpool are battling 0-0.

Even though there hasn’t been an official update on Kiko, he looks finished. Coming back from an injury and goes off after 11 minutes isn’t a good sign at all.
Even if Burnley has a tough schedule ahead, I still think they could do well - especially at home. With injuries and playing second defenders, they still seem to keep clean sheets. 🙂

What makes you think Kane will definitely score against Man City? He's delivered just twice in the last 5 gameweeks against some arguably rubbish defenses.

Technically, that is impossible to respond to, properly.

Ayew is our left-footed left offensive midfielder, but he is either played on the right, or brought on as a sub upfront. Masuaku is, or was, a left back, but Cresswell, our in situ left-footed left back, is right back to form.

As a result of playing three at the back, we are able to play Cresswell on the left side of midfield(Obiang and Noble), while Masuaku had a free, although strict marking, role further up the pitch, on either side.

That, together with good performances from Lanzini and Arnautovic(!), and Zabaleta being very disciplined on the right flank, meant that we were able to mark Hazard out of the game.

      I hope this helps.

At the moment Masuaku is one of our most in-form players so he is nailed at the moment. Alsohe is getting forward very well so is a good attacking threat. If you were going for a West Ham defender I would go for him.

      It's complicated.

Depending upon formation and the return of Fonte then his competition is Cresswell.

Cresswell is currently playing in a back three in the position that Fonte may take when he's back...leaving Cresswell to return to LWB in place of Massuaku...

No. Cresswell has shown that he is not really able to cross properly in free play, at least, not as well as Masuaku. Also does not have Masuaku's pace. BUT, Cresswell is positionally much better.

I think its fair to say that Reid and Zabaleta are nailed (the latter has no deputy because Byram is injured in any case). Creswell probably too. Then Ogbonna and Masuaku will play most games. Aside from that you have Rice, Collins and Fonte, who are not worth your consideration for numerous reasons.

    g) Niasse and spend money elsewhere
