The top two captains in Fantasy Premier League leave their backers frustrated after failing to produce the goods at home to Brighton and West Brom.

After his weekend brace in the 5-1 rout over Stoke, our faith in Harry Kane was on the rise for a Wembley Stadium showdown with Brighton.

The number one armband choice for FPL managers (25.2%) in Gameweek 17, he was also the top transfer target – over 213,000 drafted him in ahead of Tuesday evening’s deadline.

Five goals and an assist in his previous four home matches had suggested that his toils at Spurs temporary home were finally over.

Yet Kane proved a bitter disappointment, blanking for the sixth time in nine appearances at Wembley.

It was hardly for lack of trying, though – he fired more shots (10) and attempts on target (four) than any player in the Gameweek.

His 41.2% of FPL owners are now faced with a dilemma.

With trips to Man City and Burnley and a blank Gameweek 21 on the horizon, Kane has one favourable match – at home to Southampton in Gameweek 20 – in the next four rounds of fixtures.

Yet with no premium forward boasting the form, or underlying numbers, to rival the Spurs striker, many backers may choose to hold with one eye on Double Gameweek 22, when he faces Swansea and West Ham.

Son takes centre stage again

With Dele Alli dropping to the bench as Erik Lamela was handed his first start of the season, Son Heung-min was again included on Mauricio Pochettino’s teamsheet against the Seagulls.

Transferred in by over 100,000 managers for Gameweek 17, the South Korean’s late strike (courtesy of a Christian Eriksen assist) took his tally to three goals and two assists in the last three league outings.

Yet while Kane looks a near-certain starter for Saturday’s trip to the Etihad, his team-mate’s pitch-time on the road may be enough of a deterrent for would-be suitors.

Whereas Son has started eight of his side’s nine home fixtures, he has been named in the first XI in just two of their eight road trips.

His form, however, may persuade Pochettino to retain his services against a City defence with one clean sheet in five at the Etihad.

At the back for Spurs, both Kieran Trippier and Ben Davies look set to return to the XI after Pochettino rotated his full-backs, starting Danny Rose and Serge Aurier in a 4-2-3-1.

Rare off-day for Salah

After shuffling his pack for Sunday’s Merseyside derby, Jurgen Klopp unleashed his so-called “Fab Four” for Liverpool’s plum home clash with West Brom at Anfield.

Second only to Kane for the FPL armband, Mohamed Salah was backed by 17.8% after serving up a goal or assist in each of the previous eight Gameweeks.

Unlike Kane, though, he struggled to offer much threat as the Merseysiders surprisingly failed to breach a backline that arrived at Anfield with a single away clean sheet to their name.

Salah, Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino all played the full 90 minutes and – along with Sadio Mane – fired two attempts on goal apiece.

The one silver lining is that at least the Egyptian played from start to finish – indicating that the hamstring problem that forced him off on Sunday was no more than a niggle.

Whereas Kane’s armband appeal is in decline for the City match, Salah now travels to face a Bournemouth defence that have allowed 117 shots on goal at home – no side have conceded more.

With 33 points in his last three road trips, a return to form at the Vitality Stadium would be no surprise – Liverpool have scored 20 times away from home compared with just 14 goals at Anfield.

Meanwhile, Klopp’s side continue to defy the critics and show reliable defensive form at Anfield. Last night’s result brought a sixth clean sheet at home, second only to Man United’s seven, while no defence have conceded fewer home goals than Liverpool’s three.

While Joe Gomez’s owners were left frustrated by a single-point return off the bench as a late replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back, Andrew Robertson retained his place on the left for the third successive league match.

Priced at 4.6, the Scot’s security of starts look to have been cemented in the continued absence of Alberto Moreno – as well as that trip to Bournemouth, he hosts Swansea and Leicester in the next four.

The latest reports suggest that Moreno will not return to contention to threaten Robertson until early 2018.

With Simon Mignolet rested amid talk from Klopp of a minor ankle issue, Robertson currently looks to be the most secure route into the Reds defence.

Ragnar Klavan (4.3) earned successive starts and picked up three bonus points in Wednesday’s encounter, though with Joel Matip thought to be closer to return over the coming Gameweeks, his role will also be back under threat.

Posted this on another thread early this morning Aus time, but thought I'd go gor another audience's experience...

I think we are having many knocked out of the Cup by some average teams.

    Your story?

The team who beat me had 3 non-players on the park (no backups) & Rashford (1pt) as capt with Okazaki's 16, & de Gea's 11pts dragging him over the line.

    Have to laugh.

On the same lines, the guy who won this GW from my office forgot their was a round of mid week games...

Had Otamendi, Valencia on his bench (benched them for the derby) but both came on...had Morata as captain...which changed to Eriksen as Morata didn't play.

Beaten by a dead team of rank 1.3mil. Used all 3 subs, Danilo was last sub and contributed 7 points. We drew 43-43 and he won on goals scored. Lukuku scored for him, I had no goal scorers.

Thank you Morata, Niasse and Ward!

Which of these would you do this week (will likely get both over the next few weeks):
    A) Mustafi > Jones
    B) Zeegelaar > Kenny
    C) Mee > Kenny

Rest of the defence is Christensen and Mbemba

kane has 1 assist in 17 gameweeks. this is what should be discussed, not getting over-excited in brace week and overly down in blank week. can score 30 goal a season and still be a waste of money if you're not assiting

^ His lack of assists are a big worry.

Also, top scoring forward in the game by 10/11 points. Kinda depends how much you can do with the extra 1.3 - 2.2 million you save on other premium forward options.

top scoring player in any position often just means the big hitter who has played the most games.
not advocating selling kane just surrpised a 12.5mil striker can get 1 assist in almost half a season and it doesn't get a single mention

              Agreed.
Tbh I sold him a number of weeks ago. Lack of assists one issue I had. It's a risk, obviously, but I prefer the look of the team without him and at the moment it's not really caused many issues. His returns can be matched so far (again coming back to the lack of assists).

broken even at best. needs either more goals or more assists. should the most expensive player in the game be joint 5th for points, level with a goalkeeper

rescind this goalkeeper reference, is not fair to use as de gea's scoring is freakish.

It means he's breaking even. First off, 12 goals is not some phenomenally great tally so far for a player like Kane. Not saying it's bad, but he's not blowing FPL out of the water. Second, due to the lack of assists, it means other, cheaper options keep up with him.

essentially he would have to push to on previously unseen goal levels to really justify his price, break past the record 31 mark *if, if!* he carries on at his current assist rate. maybe has that potential in him, if not this season then sometime in the future, especially back on proper home turf. waste is possibly being misinterpretted here, seen as too strong. even if he's worth 95% of his price it's a waste.

feel we always focus too much on goals, if not only half the equation it's not too far off

Pure bonkers of a post. If a guy is scoring 30 goals a season, that's 200 points plus in FPL. Not many will achieve that.

Stick the armband on him each week and that's another 200 plus.

We need him to be selfish otherwise he wouldn't score. It's what makes a great striker.

Btw, have you looked at chances created?

One positive for him is the lack of cs which gives him a much better chance of bonus points as he will not have to compete with his defenders. That might change once toby and Victor come back though.

He’s too explosive not to have regardless of assists, plus he’s a captain pick always every week which isn’t the case with most “cheaper” options.

    What to do with Choupo?
He was a reliable bench player for me, a nailed-on starter for Stoke.
Can't see many other options, apart from Gross. Doucoure would give me two Watford mids.

Which two should I prioritise shipping out of these crocks...

    Morata
    Richarlison
    Mee

I think Moreno is the only one we know isn't available this weekend.

All others still to be updated.

I've got 0.7m in the bank and 2 FTs. Had a shocker of a GW. What do?

    Fabianski, Elliot
    Jones, Simpson, Duffy, Mee, Mariappa
    Hazard, Salah, Gross, Sterling, Richarlison
    Kane, Morata, DCL

Pretty lost as to what to do. Team looks decent to me on paper, except for the backline, but I've consistently had bad GWs and now am chasing a major mini-league points gap.

      Simpson -> Kenny/Ogbonna/Masuaku or Fab -> Pope.

      Rest looks good to me.

Can you do mee to Christiansen? If not I'd maybe do morata to firmino/Rooney and next week upgrade defence and midfield a bit.

Season keeper. No need to panic sell.

Definitely not a panic sell as I’ve had him since week 1. This is first time I’ve actually thought maybe it’s time to go, with 2 tough away fixtures and a blank in next 4. Buy him back again for 12.7 or so for DGW

Well as he is the most expensive player in the game, you can get any replacement you like.

      Personally I'm keeping.

I don't see a better option at the moment, all other options are crocked, rotated or out of form. Morata is the best option but he's been injured. Aguero can be just as devastating but Pep will continue to manage his minutes. If Lukaku can chip in with attacking returns every game then he could be the best option. Lacazette has trolled me twice already this season and will share minutes with Giroud over christmas. Even Rooney is starting to look like a good option.

    Pope/Elliot
    Gomez/Christensen/Masuaku/Simpson/Naughton
    Hazard/Richarlison/Salah/GroB/Caroll
    Lukaku/Firmino/Vardy

    1 FT 2.5 ITB

What would you do with this squad ? Who would you get rid off ?

Masuaku has kinda awful stats. Is he really worth more than Ogbonna? Considering WHU don't score goals, surely Ogbonna will keep racking up bonus making him clearly the better option.
