Saturday’s events end with the headline act, as leaders Manchester City host Spurs at the Etihad Stadium.

The big team news is undoubtedly the omission of David Silva, reportedly due to “personal reasons”. We have no further explanation as yet for a player who was the most signed ahead of Gameweek 18, with over 278,000 drafting him in.

Silva had returned four goals from his previous four Gameweeks and his absence will be felt by City, with İlkay Gündogan coming in to replace the Spaniard.

For Spurs, Dele Alli returns to the starting line-up as expected, though Danny Rose plays back-to-back league matches for the first time this season, with Ben Davies kept on the bench. Kieran Trippier returns at right-back.

Intriguingly, two of the most sold players this week – Leroy Sane (sold by 166,000) and Harry Kane (sold by 135,000) – are in opposition and will be under scrutiny.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

From what I can tell so far, City can be exploited by teams with genuine wingers that hug the touchline. If you watch City defend, they become very narrow and when the wingers come back for them, it's near impossible to break them down.

The sad thing is pretty much every team in England play with wide men that are actually attacking midfield centers which like to cut in rather than go out wide and cross the ball for the striker.

Travel to PSG and Real and you find players like Bale, Mbappe etc.

I'm not saying these players shouldn't cut in now and again but it's become a situation where that's all these players look to do. The way Sane is playing (hugging the touchline, getting to the byline, looking to cross) is exactly what teams need against City.

Alli, Eriksen and Son are playing way too narrow and add the fact that Eriksen and Alli doen't like protecting their full back, you end up with players like Sane having great success out wide.

I feel as if Eriksen or Alli whenever they are out wide purposefully relieve themselves of defensive duties because they don't want to play in that position next week. I say this because there's no excuse not tracking back.

Lastly I'd like to say that Winks and Dembele have not got the creativity to ping a cross diagonal ball to wingers running onto the ball which makes it hard for players like Alli, Son and Eriksen to run onto a pass rather than get it to feet.

He's not exactly the type I'm looking for but he'd be better than Eriksen or Alli right now. Spurs need that balance for me and so I'd lose one of those for the good of the team.

Thanks. In this half watch how City defend and how they defend narrow. Waler and Delph will tuck in because they know that Spurs won't attack by width.

    3. Deano
      • 13 Years
      8 years, 1 month ago

Agreed to a certain extent on width but the main issue is Dembele and Winks lack the class for that next forward pass.

I still think Spurs are best served with wing backs as they are their best creators and stretch the opposition.

      1. Fanta sea
        • 10 Years
        8 years, 1 month ago

Yeah I mentioned the lack of creativity for those two at the end and it really is a huge problem. However, I'd argue that Eriksen and Alli make it difficult for them as well since they demand the ball to feet rather than in space.

City players know that, so it allows them to push up. They don't have to worry about a ball over the top and also there's no full back bombing forward because there isn't enough time for them to do that.

Spurs are best served with wing backs because Alli and Eriksen don't provide width and to a certain extent nor does Son. Wing backs are their only way.

I don’t understand why teams don’t attack City?
United basically sat off them for 40 minutes, concerned, so then had one attack, equalised, and then went back to sitting off again.

City defence is not vulnerable, Delph isn’t a defender. Kompany is always injured...stones still learning, keeper is new to the league and I’ve not seen a single challenge on him from a cross/corner....like how teams targeted De Gea.

5-2-3 and leave the 3 right up the pitch. Make City either leave players back or gamble and you hit them on the counter. Let City have the midfield - they can't hurt you until they get near the box.

Yes, like united played the CL final against Barca, ultimately they still lost, but still made a game of it.

In my opinion teams are letting them play, they are very good, but not unbeatable.

It’s frustrating seeing teams except a 2-0 defeat, like it’s a positive result.

      2. Fanta sea
        • 10 Years

You're not wrong. It's to do with starting position. City pegs teams back as they build possession. They force teams back as they advanced with the ball and when it comes to a counter, they foul as high up the pitch and get set for a high press.

You need wingers and a Scholes type player to truly break down a team like this. Teams have to play long balls out wide and there needs to be wingers in the game willing to run into space.

United didn't try it enough for me and when they did they got lucky with a lingard goal.

The problem with united is the wide men want the ball to feet alot when really the ball needs to go into space.

It’s good analysis, you’d like to hope actual PL managers know more than any of us. But it’s frustrating to watch, and as a neutral frustrating that the title is over even before the Christmas fixtures.

I think Jose knows this. I just don't think he believes in his players, especially up front. It's one of the major reasons why perisic was a must buy type of player for United.

Rashford and Lingard are just not good enough. I've never bought into the Rashford hype with United or England.

Jose needs to be in the market for a couple of wingers.

We are missing Wanyama Sanchez and Toby massively. Then 3 in our side and playing a back 3 we would be much more competitive in this game

      1. Fanta sea
        • 10 Years
        8 years, 1 month ago

Wanyama is a big loss for me. I actually agree with alot of points but the reason is because Spurs lack a true winger. Playing 3-5-2 will allow Spurs to have wing backs that can provide the width. It's clear that Eriksen and Alli are not willing to be wingers for the team. Son is also another that likes to drift centrally but he's more trutworthy when it comes to defending that the other two. Eriksen was not helping Trippier and so Poch had to switch Son there because he knew he'd run back.

Geez, there are some ignorant football people on here with some comments. This is by far the best game of the season.

Quality of skill, strategy and execution. Yes, that game was good but this is a different level. Goals scored should not be the be all and end all.

Which one would you prioritise first?

      A) Coutinho to Sterling
      B) Ward to Christensen

Can’t do both as 0.1m off

Why get rid of Cout? Obviously you just brought him in like a week or so ago? If he hauls tomorrow then what? Give him some time. Get Christensen.
