First-half goals from Romelu Lukaku and Jesse Lingard were just enough for Manchester United to claim victory at The Hawthorns, as a Gareth Barry strike for West Brom broke the hearts of David De Gea’s growing army of Fantasy owners.

Lukaku’s towering header from a Marcus Rashford cross gave the Belgian back to returns for the first time since Gameweek 7.

Backed by 819,000+ (14.9%) with the captaincy, Lukaku has now scored three in his past four appearances in all competitions.

Together with two bonus points, an eight-point return for the striker means that he is finally showing signs of turning the corner and reviving his stock as a premium-priced option.

Lukaku increased his ownership for the first time since Gameweek 7 prior to the meeting with the Baggies. But he had shed over 1.4 million over those ten previous Gameweeks.

Improved form, coupled with Man United’s fixtures could now help him reclaim some of those numbers.

Lukaku will face Leicester City next weekend, before Old Trafford encounters with Burnley and Southampton. That final home encounter falls in Gameweek 21, the blank for Harry Kane.

Lingard the Pogba alternative

Elsewhere in United’s attack, it is Jesse Lingard who has shown promise as a cut-price midfield option.

Valued at just 5.9 in FPL, Lingard again started in the No 10 role, flanked by Juan Mata and Rashford. His deflected strike from a Mata lay-off took him to four goals from his last three away matches.

Lingard claimed the maximum bonus points to give him a third double-figure return in five Gameweeks.

He is perhaps unfortunate that he has timed his ascent as a Fantasy prospect just as Paul Pogba returns to the equation.

The Frenchman – now down to 7.9 and 9.0% ownership in FPL – is back from suspension for the midweek EFL Cup tie at Bristol City, though he will likely be saved instead for the trip to the King Power Stadium.

Pogba averages 7.0 points per match and will doubtless be a key transfer target over the festive period.

He is already the fourth most-signed midfielder ahead of Gameweek 19, and his return to the United starting line-up could change the dynamic of their attack. This impacts on Lingard’s minutes and his current scoring rate requires monitoring.

Valencia blow as De Gea is denied

Gareth Barry’s second-half strike dragged West Brom back into Sunday’s contest and deprived Man United and David De Gea an eleventh clean sheet of the campaign.

The Spaniard still made four saves at The Hawthorns and has now produced at least one save point in seven of his last nine Gameweeks.

Mourinho kept faith with a back four having deployed a three-man defence in previous away matches.

That saw Phil Jones retain his start alongside Chris Smalling, with that pair seemingly the first choice centre-back partnership. It was the first time that Jones has started two matches within seven days this season.

Both Marcos Rojo and Victor Lindelof were on the bench but will likely get minutes at Bristol City and at least one of the four Gameweek outings to come.

Rojo did see action in the second period, replacing an injured Antonio Valencia who limped off on 65 minutes to claim a clean sheet for his 17.6% ownership. The Ecuadorian is now back at the top of the defender standings, though Mourinho confirmed post-match that the right-back had sustained a hamstring problem.

“This is what I call a December injury. It is an injury of accumulation of fatigue. It is a muscular one. Hamstring. Big, small, medium, I don’t know.”

However, Valencia was quick to play down concerns via social media earlier this evening, going on to say.

“Thanks for your support and concern. I am fine”.

Although that offers hope of a quick recovery, given how key he is to Mourinho’s plans, it’s perhaps unlikely that United will take any chances with Valencia and the Portuguese yet protect him over the Christmas fixtures. Valencia is yet to miss a Premier League appearance this season.

Depending on the prognosis, that could open the way for a number of options, including Rojo, Matteo Darmian (5.0) and even Luke Shaw (4.9) given that Ashley Young could be switched to the right to cover.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Seems like Pool and City are the only teams you really want to double up on in attack, but which duo's do you actually prefer?
Personally I like Firmino + Salah/Coutinho and Sterling + Silva/Sané (I got Salah, Stering and Firmino)

If you double up on Salah and Coutinho you will first of all block yourself from getting 2 city mids, but you will also somwhat have a problem filling your 3 striker spots and be 'happy' about it. I think Firmino + premium striker + cheapie is the way to go (you could argue for Vardy, Rooney and so on, but I just don't trust the Leicester and Everton to score alot of goals)

As long as Jesus/Kun rotates I would not trust them, and buying KDB probably makes you lose Hazard. Fair enough if you want to go without Chelsea attack, but I would much much rather own Hazard than Morata.

    1. mcrayeps

      this

    2. Pierce34
      • 10 Years
      7 years, 11 months ago

And that's part of the problem really - in all these cases, the best options are in midfield. Salah and Coutinho are better than Firmino (and so is Mane still, in my opinion), Hazard better than Morata and the City mids better than Aguero/Jesus.

I may well double up on Liverpool soon by getting Firmino, but I don't really like him, despite today. 1 point less per goal, no clean sheet points, and fewer goals than Salah - the latter is not what you'd want from a 'forward'.

      1. Salarrivederci
        • 9 Years
        7 years, 11 months ago

Totally agree. But I think Firmino + Lanzini would outscore Coutinho + 6,4 striker.
Said in another way. Firmino will give you more points/price than Kun/Jesus and makes you able of getting either a second city mid or a very good midfielder like Richarlison, Zaha, Lanzini, Arnautovic and so on. If you go with Kun/Lukaku/Morata/Jesus you will end up with RLC or Surman. Kane is kept out for the sake of the argument (and because all will have him in soon enough for GW22) 😉

        1. Pierce34
          • 10 Years
          7 years, 11 months ago

Yeah good points - I certainly wished I had Firmino this week instead of Jesus for his penalty miss!

Jesus out has been in my mind for a while but I always either had other moves to make first or fancied him to start/do well. At this rate I may as well keep an extra week as they have Bournemouth and he can score off the bench. With Kane/Jesus up front btw, my midfield was

          Hazard / Salah / Sterling / Richarlison / Lingard

          so I'm happy with that.

          1. Salarrivederci
            • 9 Years
            7 years, 11 months ago

Yeah I get that, and that also looks good!

            My team:
            Courtois, Speroni
            Otamendi, Monreal, Masuaku, Klavan, Mariappa
            Salah, Sterling, Hazard, Zaha, Richarlison
            Kane, Firmino, DCL

            1 FT and 0,3 ITB

Gonna do Zaha -> Lanzini next week most likely and then get Adrian and swap Kane in and out in GW21 and GW22. Might do Monreal -> Smalling/Jones, but that would just end up making all these transfers cost -4.

            1. Pierce34
              • 10 Years
              7 years, 11 months ago

Ooh, Zaha, another good call. Why is there no option to play 3-7-0? 😀

                7 years, 11 months ago

                Haha IDK 😉

Well with my midfield it feels like I play 3-0-7 😉 Zaha, Richarlison, Hazard, Salah and Sterling all in the box where the magic happens 😉 Just to bad that 2/7 striker gets less points when scoring and does not get that 1 CS point 🙂

            2. Pierce34
              • 10 Years

Those were my thoughts at the start of the season and why I went with Firmino. He always looks like a good option once he hauls like he did this week but after 2 or 3 blanks everyone jumps ship. It suddenly starts to feel like you have an 8.5 striker getting you 2 points every week which is why I eventually sold. He's a decent option I'd encourage you to stay strong if the blanks do come, I don't think I'll be getting him again this year.

Blocking City mids shouldn't be a concern if you're playing 3-5-2.

My current midfield is Salah, Coutinho, Sterling, Sane and Hazard and I'm PRETTY happy with my team.

Got Lacazette (a big mistake, he becomes Morata next week) and Firmino up top.

is it a good plan to change 3-4-3 to 3-5-2 (rotate with 4-5-1)?

    Before :
    Hazard / Salah / Richarlison / Silva / Young
    Kane / Morata / DCL

    to :
    Hazard / Salah / Coutinho / Sterling / KDB
    Kane / DCL / Quaner

    yay or nay?

Anyone know why Kevin Long is starting for Burnley all of a sudden, and how likely he is to play over the new couple of matches.

2FT and wildcard left to be played on the last gameweek possible so i'm looking extremely short term and I need a 4.0m defender to afford Kolasinac + Gross > Def (benched) + Pogba. Could also go for Cresswell + Willian as a slightly less risky duo. Decisions, decisions, decisions...

Still think it's probably worth having one cheap(er) midfielder, could get punished with that forward line.

I stil have other option to free some cash available though..

But i cant see potential in heavy striker..only kaku seems consistent enough but hes at 11.3..

I like Lukaku, Aguero and Firmino as a premium striker currently.

Would give Morata one more week just in case he picks up another yellow card but he has good fixtures.

Kane to think about for GW22.

    Salah, Hazard, Sterling, Zaha, Loftus-Cheek
    Lukaku, Calvert-Lewin, Benteke

    1FT, £1.8m ITB

Obviously the suspended Benteke is the priority to move, could move straight to Firmino.

Aguero would be my preferred striker but would need to downgrade elsewhere (Azpi or Hazard but I still like both).

Got the exact money to do Zaha to Sane which could pay off.

    Ideas?

        Elliot, missed that out sorry

Fair enough even as a pool fan I have doubts about consistency but they were devastatingly good today.
I had Kane and Morata for a long time could work out. Che just don't seem to be as explosive as City and pool.

Between Sterling and Sane for me I will C one and VC the other and hope if the C one is rested they are not even in the squad. Sane seems less prone to rotation after his rest had a feeling he might come back strong.

So as things stand now will you TC Kane in 22.
Not exactly to be trusted now but on the flip side unlikely any team will get 2 fixtures as nice as that in any other dgw. Currently think C is enough.

Also how many dgwers you planning to have for 22. I have 2 now and will probably max out at 3 maybe 4

I am planning to TC Kane because I don't think a better opportunity is guaranteed. He might not be on top form, but it's the game biggest hitter with 2 good fixtures and a break either side to be rested. Sure, there is some chance of Salah or Hazard looking like a great pick later on, but I've got my Free Hit ready to go and will probably use my second WC just before another DGW then Bench Boost. So this GW22 chance seems ideal.

Saving 2 FT in GW21 and will turn 2 dgwers into either 4 or 5 (-4).
