Wayne Rooney continues his remarkable revival as a Fantasy asset with a double-figure return as Everton eventually overwhelm a struggling Swansea City at Goodison Park.

It is ironic in a season where stuttering forwards are failing Fantasy managers that it takes a legendary striker deployed in midfield to set the standard. But a revived Wayne Rooney is currently doing just that.

Despite a first-half penalty miss, he still mustered a 13-point return – a second double-digit tally of the campaign.

From a No 6 role, Rooney supplied the pass for Gylfi Sigurdsson’s sublime second-half strike, before converting a second penalty after full-back Jonjoe Kenny was felled.

That rewarded the 271,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers who invested prior to Gameweek 18, while 150,000 (2.7%) boasted a healthy profit from Rooney as their captain.

He has now produced six goals and three assists from his last five Gameweeks, against a backdrop where premium forward options have struggled to sustain consistent form to justify their price tags.

Indeed, in terms of points per million (12.1), Rooney is now the top-rated FPL forward and all from a deeper role in midfield.

Post-match, a buoyant Rooney enthused on his new role and it’s capacity to deliver influence matches…

“It’s the right position for me at this stage of my career. I can pick my moments when to get in the box and to stay out and help us control the game. It’s certainly a position I know I can play, score goals and create goals and I’ve been lucky enough to do that in the recent weeks.”

Managers have been quick to react to Rooney’s current trajectory, with over 80,000 making a move for the “forward” ahead of Gameweek 19 – making him the third most popular signing.

However, the schedule is now more punishing for the veteran, with Chelsea the next opponent and visitors to Goodison Park.

While away trips to Bournemouth and West Brom then follow, it remains to be seen if Rooney will play those back-to-back matches – three outings in seven days may be beyond his legs. Following that, Everton face Manchester United (h) and Spurs (a).

Calvert-Lewin plays his part

Dominic Calvert-Lewin may well be more assured of minutes over the festive period, with the 20-year-old remaining integral to Everton’s attack.

Leading the line, his pace and physical presence troubled Swansea throughout and he profited from Rooney’s missed penalty to tuck home a rebound – his third goal of the season.

Calvert-Lewin went into Gameweek 18 as the budget striker of choice, backed by over 80,000 new owners.

His first-half strike means that he has now provided owners with two goals and three assists from his last six Gameweeks. That’s a strong return for a 5.4 option, helping him sit second to Rooney for points per million among forwards (11.5).

Five shots on goal, four from inside the box, are also encouraging numbers from a cut-price striker who is perhaps providing the strongest reason to overlook Rooney at this time.

Sigurdsson in midfield is, of course, another consideration.

His long-range effort again suggested that the Icelander was edging back to his best and three goals and two assists from seven Gameweeks is encouraging.

However, given the value offered by Everton’s two forwards and the competition in our midfields, Sigurdsson is unlikely to make an impression on squads just yet.

Giving up penalties to Rooney – a situation that is unlikely to change – remains a major blow to his stock.

Everton breached but Kenny still profits

The Toffees backline has also represented value in recent Gameweeks, as they went into Monday’s contest on the back of three successive clean sheets.

Jordan Pickford and Jonjoe Kenny were under scrutiny as potential targets, with the latter still emerging with points despite Everton conceding a sloppy first-half goal.

Kenny’s raids forward provide back-up to his defensive potential and that proved a factor as he was brought down for Everton’s second penalty.

Still priced at 4.4, the 20-year-old remains a viable option, though given the aforementioned schedule, he surely requires a rotation partner over this spell.

The potential return of Seamus Coleman will also threaten his starts in the New Year. Kenny may well be a short-lived Christmas investment, then.

Bony blow for Swans

Swansea City’s night on Merseyside whimpered out after early promise delivered via Leroy Fer’s goal. Meanwhile, the early injury to Wilfried Bony – apparently after just 47 seconds – delivered another potentially damaging blow to their survival hopes.

Post-match manager Paul Clement gave us this update on the striker’s prognosis…

“He has injured his hamstring but how significant it is we are not sure. Hamstring injuries are normally a minimum of seven to 10 days, but we will have to see if it is worse than that.”

Seemingly set to miss the Gameweek 19 clash with Crystal Palace, that would bring Tammy Abraham back into the picture for that encounter.

The Chelsea loanee was benched for a third successive match on Monday.

In truth, neither Bony nor Abraham offer much encouragement as assets at present, with Swansea remaining bereft of creativity to feed either striker and Clement seemingly rejecting the idea of pairing both in attack.

    My current team is:

    Fabianski (Foster)
    Alonso, Otamendi, Masuaku (Kabalese, Mariappa)
Hazard, Sterling, Salah, RLC (A Young)
    DCL, Morata, Kane

    0.1m ITB

Any suggestions on how to improve this?
(I'm possibly looking at Hazard & Young > Pogba & Zaha)

    Thanks in advance 🙂

I wouldn't sell Hazard with his next 3 fixtures.

If you're unsure on your captain pick this week, I'd consider Kane > Aguero/Lukaku and captain, then bring Kane back for the DGW22.

I have been treating Kane as essential but Lukaku's form and £ difference is definitely worth my attention, Hadn't really considered this an option until now..

    Smalling or Jones?

Both should be nailed with Bailly requiring surgery. I quite like Smalling as he's a touch more reliable physically and has a greater goal threat (in my mind, anyway).

I think Smalling is less likely to be rotated at the moment and he gets forward for corners unlike Jones. Jones does seem to do better on BPS though.

    Which would you recommend guys?

    A) Kola > Alonso
    B) Kola > Jones
    C) Kola & RLC > Holgate & Pogba -4

Really want to get pogba in and have exact funds today. Leaves me poor at the back with the holgate transfer this gw though.

Think its time Alonso stepped up a gear. Little rest with his suspension in the league cup.
Jones is more price friendly indeed but surely cant play all through the xmas period either.

Yes. Rooney has Chelsea so might not score big or at all. Pogba is also not that safe, and in spite of their loss to Crystal, Leicester is not that easy at home I think. Sterling vs Bournemouth should be good if he is rested in midweek. (He'll be my Captain this week). Then you can have a fresh look at the others later.

I made this post around a month ago regarding the fixture congestion.

    http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2017/11/19/scout-notes-gameweek-12-sunday-5/?hc_page=11#hc_comment_16974573

Since this post, we now have the DGW to consider in GW22. This follows the blank GW21 for West Ham and Spurs, and is just 48 hours apart.

If you chose to load up on Spurs and West Ham players over the coming couple of weeks, say Kane and Ogbonna, that leaves you only one outfield player to handle the squad rotation of 2 games in 3 days.

    https://i.imgur.com/IIBtfK9.png

I'm looking at bringing in Adrian as my second keeper as they're far less likely to be rotated, and am considering selling Kane this week and using another FT to bring him back for GW22.

I don't know why this isn't being discussed yet, and am seeing people bringing in West Ham players already, in particular.

I think you know already,.. you said it was a bad move 🙂

Am waiting until I get more information from the Carabao cup matches tonight, but it's likely to be Aguero. I then decide whether to captain Aguero or Sterling v Bournemouth.

I usually dismiss Lukaku, but he's worth another look given that Pogba will be back this weekend.

A premium striker would be best so that I'm not taking hits transferring funds to midfield and back again before DGW22.

        Kane: bur, SOU, blank
        Aguero: BOU, new, cpl
        Lukaku: lei, BUR, SOT
        Morata: eve, BRI, STK

I'm not sure what has happened to FFS over time, but when a throwaway comment receives more up votes than an effort to discuss a genuine FF topic, then forget it.

I thought about how to make this as short and succinct as possible, like, if you have Kane and Ogbonna in GW21 when they don't play, you'll only have one sub to handle any rotation issues. But I didn't think it quite cut it.

Getting Aguero is just one option, I (me personally) am considering for the Bournemouth game. There are clearly other options lol.

Mods, please remove this hot topic.

Presumably, you're getting Aguero then Kane back in for GW22. In which case I'm not sure why opting for Aguero would be frowned upon. I'm planning something different for GW21, just not sure on the target yet.

Same thoughts exactly. Did Kane, Gross to Aguero, Sterling (-4). Yes Kun may be rotated but he's capable of big hauls, even from a few minutes. And people saying Kun has no form, against Swansea he was so dangerous, on another day he could have bagged a hat trick.

Playing the Free Hit in GW21 would be an option, but there'll be bigger blank GW's to come, so that may be premature.

was rather ok vs Brighton and Stoke so lets not be totally blinded by that City massacre. Not up against city every week, Burnley next without Ward, Tarkowski and possibly Lowton hm, not so sure Spurs will do badly there. Have a feelin that Burnley gonna crack soon in a game or two, that style of defense along with fixture congestion and injuries, they are bound to implode at one stage and when that happens it will be ugly. Kane worth the pricetag? No, not atm no.

I agree, it's risky bringing in West Ham players prior to the blank. Although, Moyes has also said that Hart will get games, so one of the ones round Xmas may be a game for him.

no sound manager will chop and change keepers during christmas i think not. Adrian is there to stay until he makes a howler i guess. Moyes won´t change anything as long as they play well, his manager career is at spell here, you don´t take risks in that position.

Adrian seems the smarter choice in hindsight if you have a playing goalie.
I got Ogbonna a couple of weeks ago which I'm happy about but if I decide to lose Kane then Adrian will most likely come in.

Not really when many of the top teams play each other or have difficult fixtures but have very good fixtures after that. I see it as a much better option than playing it in a blank GW where most of the big teams don't have a match.

I mean that he's less of a risk than an outfield player, because your goalkeeper should play 2 games in 3 days. I think you could consider yourself unlucky if he doesn't.

Whether you think Adrian is nailed as the West Ham goalkeeper is a personal opinion. I think he is based on West Ham's form since he displaced Joe Hart.

I agree Adrian should be number 1. Joe Hart isn’t the same as he was years ago.

Given 3 CS in a row and a visit of Newcastle next, a West Ham defender looks a good prospect regardless of the DGW
I'm feeling a lot happier now with Masuaku then any of the potential Watford defenders

I also upgraded my second keeper to Adrain (DDG is the main one) ... a nice fallback when I don't quite trust Man U defences ~ I will be playing double W/Ham this week with DDG on the bench

Haven't owned Kane is a long time but the DGW and following fixtures means I am considering Haz+Rooney to Lanzini+Kane ...requires a extra 1.6M which is findable

It will definitely give you an advantage for this DGW assuming they all play twice. I think this DGW is unusual in forcing West Ham and Spurs to play two games in 72 hours. They could field practically two different starting line-ups.

        1. bench boost for every gamew…
          • 8 Years

if one look at the squads, defensively both teams doesnt have many options do they? You would think both teams keepers and cb´s will play both matches, i´m not mentioning spurs fullbacks, no point, and one would suspect West ham will play with approximately same backline, i think wingbacks most likely to be rotated if any. Spurs will most likely play with Kane but Alli, Eriksen, Son and Lamela, and to a lesser extent Sissoko/Nkodou will in all likelyhood be rotated in some way. Could mean Alli, Son and eriksen all start but they won´t play 90minutes neither i´m certain. West Ham attack is also likely to be rotated, Lanzini and Arnie is probable starters in both but there is both Hernandez and Sakho and maybe Carroll f fit.

To me, Son could be worth it as he will start one and he is often very dangerous when he comes on as a sub and at 8.0 your invenstment isn´t that high.

Yeah. Just saw the Morata has Arsenal away in 22 as well. So a mid + Morata to Lanzini + Kane would be a no brainer for 2 FTs.

Now, for best laid plans and all that...

Makes sense to sell Kane now.
      1. Fixtures - not great.
      2. Value falling. Another drop could happen this week. Maybe more next week if he blanks at Burnley. And possibly a double drop in the blank week.
      3. Plenty of good captaincy options GW20. hard to look past Man City GW19.
      4. Lukaku looks a decent straight swap for a simple return strategy.
      5. West Ham defender seems a good option now. Newcastle at home, bournemouth away, blank, DGW, 6 straight decent fixtures from GW23

For a 4 point hit (Ward, RLC, Kane OUT-> Jones, Pogba, Firminho IN) I can get this team

    Pope
    Ota - Jones - Christiansen
    Haz - Salah - Pogba - Sterling - Richarlison
    Morata - Firminho

    Elliot - Hegazi - Naughton - DCL

Any advice/input appreciated. planning on free hitting for the dgw to load up on spurs and wham

Those considering going for a power 5 in Midfield. The Top Midfielders this season:
    Pogba (7.9m) 7 ppg
    Hazard (10.8m) 5.3 ppg
    Sterling (8.5m) 7 ppg
    Salah (10m) 7.5 ppg
    KDB (10.3m) 6.3 ppg
    Coutinho (9.0m) 7.3 ppg
    Silva (8.3m) 6 ppg
    Eriksen (9.3m) 6 ppg

Hazard points per game suggest he isn't value for money. Pogba, Coutinho and Sterling the three midfielders to have for value.

One important thing that I got from Jay on the Scoutcast was:
You need all of your team to perform not just your big hitter and/or captain. And you should take this into account when taking Kane out - Does it seriously improve your whole team enough to counter his potential hauls.
I've analysed my proposed -12 move below and I feel long term it might be a winner:

    1. DDG v Fabianski (got a great run out of Fabianski but DDG will score more and it gets rid of my get in Jones or not concerns).
    2. Otamendi v Daniels (no brainer atm with BOU fix/form and Daniels injury concern)
    3. Pogba v Alli (this one's obvious also, held Alli for far too long & Pogba should prove good value)
    4. KDB v RLC (KDB will pound him into the ground on points)
    5. Depoitre v Kane (Should be close for the golden boot but I think Depoitre just nicks it in the end)

Not for me - because I can't see me going for the rest of the season without Kane. It's a -12 to get him out and redistribute, and a -12 (or 4 weeks of transfers) to get him back in again.

      1. jia you
        • 9 Years
        7 years, 11 months ago

Appreciate your comment but I disagree mate. If/When Kane finds his form I can get him back, it's not so difficult, particulary if KDB becomes a rotation risk (which I believe he will eventually).
I'm using the FH chip to get him in for the DGW btw.

        1. Pasqualinho
          • 16 Years

I wouldn't go for that either - if you say you'll get Kane back when he finds form, what does that mean exactly? Is it 12 points for the hit to take him out, 12 points (or so) for the game he finds form in (which you won't get because you don't have him) and at least a 4pt hit to swap him for KDB? That's 28 points you've just frittered away - minimum. These replacements you get for the Kane cash better be good to cover that.

            • 9 Years

Your looking at the glass half empty mate 😉
The thing is Spurs are not in form, Kane is not producing the goods, so is it best to sit on our hands and keep Kane while it's affecting the rest of our squads as we can't go for the better in-form players due to budget constraints?

            1. Pasqualinho
              • 16 Years
              7 years, 11 months ago

I don't agree. People who say Kane is out of form, he's got Burnley up next, then a blank in a couple of weeks, but plan to get him back for the double I can get on board with - they're gambling he won't score well in the first two weeks (and we know he'll get 0 in the 3rd so you're relying on a sub) and that's a pretty fair gamble. But if you say I'll get him back after he picks up a shed-load pf points then, by definition, you are guaranteeing that you aren't going to pick up that shed-load of points, and others are. Which personally I wouldn't advise.

I see your point but City assets are just too good atm, their fixtures are just too good atm. Selling Kane allows me to load up on them. It also allows me to get MUN defensive cover in DDG and punt on Pogba. Well worth it atm imo, but of course it could backfire if Kane goes on a goalscoring spree!

Fair enough. As they say, you can't have them all. And if this is your only way to get the Manchester players you want then it has to be that way. But for me, if there's a must-have player that you feel you might need to rip your team apart to get back in (as I would feel about someone like Kane), then maybe you need to plan a near-painless way back (which unfortunately would mean only re-allocating the released funds in one player, rather than spreading it around), or consider strongly not getting rid in the first place.

12 to get him out and 12 to get him back in? How did you reach that conclusion? This is greatly exaggerated imo. Most have one or 2 of Morata/Hazard/Aguero/Lukaku as placeholders for cash and neither of them is essential really. If Kane is back in form, a simple 2FTs can get him back. Morata -> Kane and Premium defender -> budget defender and that is all it takes.

        1. Pasqualinho
          • 16 Years

It is artistic license a little, I agree. But if you're upgrading Fab to DDG and Daniels to Otamendi and RLC to KDB then that's a lot of re-allocation of funds. And then you have to re-allocate to get back. And I doubt you can do it with premium defender to budget defender easily - Premium to non-playing, maybe.

Sterling and Pogba are juicy picks. Im looking to Get Pogba and Sane/Sterling. The back draw of lighter forward, compared to,keeping Morata, is u probably need to switch between the cheap forwards, as their form shifts more. With Morata u could probably keep as long as he is injury free, and no bans etc.

Would you do it for a few hits now if you have exact cash to do it?

i’m a fan of the 3-5-2/4-5-1 but worry about your rotation cover

jones and your keepers could be prone to a rest, DCL has some hard fixtures and your bench can’t really cope with that.

but the only way I can see to upgrade the defence is to downgrade Alonso which I’m assuming you’d be reluctant to do after last week

The strange thing is my current team bench is Niasse Tarkowski and Hunemeiyer so that's where I'm at basically and the point is to get a playing bench (besides Hunemeiyer)

Unless Jones is unfit, can't see him benched. Jose prefers to play a settled CB pairing.

    current defence:
    ota, christensen, masuaku, tarkowski, mbemba

who’s the best defender to replace mbemba for under 4.7 for the next few gws (plan to replace tarkowski with mee)

A - zanka (sot, STK, BUR)
B - Gomez (ars, SWA, LEI)
C - other (any suggestions gratefully received)
