Chelsea leave it late to beat Bournemouth, with their match-winner picking up a one-match ban that has Fantasy repercussions, while Man United fall victim to a spot of Bristol City giant-killing.

Alvaro Morata scored a late, late winner to send Chelsea into the EFL Cup semi-final at the expense of Bournemouth.

But the Spaniard was also booked in the tie, meaning he will now miss Saturday’s trip to Everton having accrued five cautions this season.

That’s a blow to his 21.4% ownership – and also bad news for the 15.0% with Eden Hazard in their Fantasy Premier League squads.

The midfielder, who was brought on after 61 minutes by coach Antonio Conte last night, has thrived in partnership with Morata, but struggled in his absence.

Working with the forward from Gameweeks 9 to 16, Hazard scored five goals and produced three assists, with that run including a nine-minute cameo against Swansea City and a shutout by West Ham.

The partnership has been particularly fruitful for Hazard away from home – in just four matches on the road alongside the summer signing, he has produced 39 FPL points.

But he has just one assist from the last three Gameweeks, and he played two of those matches as a false nine due to a back injury to Morata.

With Morata now missing again, Conte looks likely to employ the Belgian in the same role at Goodison Park.

Willian, who opened the scoring last night, and Pedro would be expected to complete a front three – a system in which Hazard’s goal threat is vastly reduced.

Over the last two Gameweeks, he has managed just two attempts on goal.

Morata’s ban has understandably accelerated sales of the striker. The Spaniard has been transferred out by 92,000+ for Gameweek 19, making him the fifth most sold player.

He has now lost close to half of the two million managers who had him in their FPL teams going into Gameweek 16 as the move from premium forwards to big-hitting midfielders gathers pace.

All change from Chelsea and Cherries

Conte made eight alterations to the side that beat Southampton last weekend, with key defenders Cesar Azpilicueta and Andreas Christensen given the night off and Marcos Alonso serving a one-match suspension.

Cesc Fabregas started his first match in three in all competitions and set up Willian’s opener, while Hazard and Morata were only on the pitch thanks to the inability of their team-mates – and forward Michy Batshuayi in particular – to put Bournemouth away.

The Cherries rallied after the break and equalised in stoppage time when Dan Gosling curled home a shot from Callum Wilson’s pass.

Morata’s last-gasp winner was hard on Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe, who had made seven changes to his side, and his evening was hardly improved by the news that striker Jermain Defoe is now a big doubt for the weekend trip to Man City.

The veteran forward had to be replaced after 17 minutes last night with suspected ankle ligament issue. Harry Arter is also a concern after picking up a calf complaint.

United they fall

Man United suffered a shock 2-1 defeat by Championship high-fliers Bristol City, although the result will at least ease the fixture congestion for a side still in the Champions League.

Coach Jose Mourinho made ten changes to the team that won at West Brom last weekend, with Marcus Rashford the only survivor and Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic both starting.

The Frenchman, back from a three-match suspension, has picked up more than 84,000 new managers heading into Gameweek 19’s trip to Leicester City, making him the sixth most popular purchase this week.

But he cut a frustrated figure at Ashton Gate and picked up a booking for his troubles.

Ibrahimovic, meanwhile, started for the first time since sustaining a major knee injury at the end of last season and marked the occasion with the equalising goal from a free-kick following a foul on Pogba.

The Swede played 69 minutes before being replaced by the out-of-favour Henrikh Mkhitaryan, while Pogba lasted the entire match.

Key players missing included David De Gea, Phil Jones, Ashley Young, Nemanja Matic, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard, while Romelu Lukaku was introduced on 61 minutes as United went after a winner.

Gameweek blanks on the horizon

The semi-final draw has pitted Man City against Bristol City and Arsenal against Chelsea, with the two-legged ties taking place on Tuesday, January 9 – between Gameweek 22 and the FA Cup third round – and Tuesday, January 23.

Gameweek 24 comes before those second legs, involving Brighton v Chelsea, Arsenal v Crystal Palace and Man City v Newcastle, with the FA Cup fourth round to follow.

The Carabao Cup final is due to take place on February 25 – the weekend of Gameweek 28.

That week, Arsenal are scheduled to play Man City, while Chelsea are up against Man United.

Essentially, then, if Man City progress to the final, both themselves and Arsenal will have a blank Gameweek 28.

And if Chelsea beat the Gunners in the other semi-final, then Conte’s side and Man United will also be without a fixture that weekend.

It's pretty open. Could be a player that has low ownership - or one that is overlooked. So indeed Aguero (c) is a differential when the City mids are grabbing he attention.

But this is like what people are saying about Burnley. They are missing their first choice defenders. They have had defensive problems all season and are still keeping it tight. It's more about the system and whether it works or not right?

A younger player could come in fired up and ready to prove himself!

Andre Gray! I brought him in after Deeney ban. Needed to decide between Gray and Austin and chose the former. Watford can bang some goals this weekend and with Gray and Rich they have much more pace. I still dont understand why Deeney was first choice.

Deeney and Gray have been competing and rotating all season. The reason why Deeney was maybe getting the edge is Gray has been extremely wasteful

      Dwight gayle

Finally fit and stringing together some games. When he plays he transforms the Newcastle attack. His running between the lines and exploiting openings with his pace gives them an unpredictability in attack that they lack when joselu and perez play. Put the ball in the net in 4 of his last 6 starts.
West ham have played out of their skins. Easy to get up for city, chelsea and arsenal. Then stoke away was obviously a potential banana skin so they were on their toes. I think they might get caught napping against a rafa drilled Newcastle side that's in survival mode

Stefano Okaka , with Deeney out and Gray pretty ineffectual and Silva desperately trying to get Watford back on track , i think he might turn to Okaka to try something different , especially with Doucoure out too they'll be lacking a bit of muscle in the team , which Okaka will bring in abundance as he's a big lump who can cause carnage in the opposition defense , a bit like Deeney on steroids , which will help Richarlison by pulling the defense apart

from what i've read he was dropped from the team for non footballing reasons , but Silva did bring him on for an 8 minute cameo last week

Think Zaha could be a differential this week. He has looked good last couple of weeks. Swansea without manager, and their defenders looked to carry bricks while running in the game against Everton. Also given the fact that people now tend to go 5 power midfielders. I can easily see Zaha and/or Richarlison outscore some of those, and the extra cash results in Kane leading the line. (K)ane + Zaha could be huge this week (I hope) 😉

I see this error being made sooooo often on here... People making transfers because of point drops. If that happens to me I'll just go "oh well, time to find another option". I refuse to take early transfers when there are midweek games or other worrying issues that need clarification.

Cheers Jinswick, you fancy Alonso more than Pogba then I take it? I've heard no news re Coleman, but I don't expect him to feature before the FA cup round

I think Pogba's a solid option (looking at him myself next week), but RLC has a decent fixture this week so I'd be fine starting him. Pogba also played 90 mins last night so his minutes could get managed.

Maybe Duffy -> Masuaku this week and RLC -> Pogba next week?

            1. Hurricane Gilbert
              • 10 Years
              8 years, 1 month ago

@Jinswick RLC could be a decent shout against Swansea, I agree. I want Adrian instead of Masuaku (already have Ogbonna), so that's not an option for me. Thoughts on Hazard to KdB and get Pogba next GW? Enables a Niasse upgrade later, the downside is it's potentially a waste of a precious transfer prior to the DGW.
              '
Alternatively I'll just get Pogba straight in and leave him there. Hm... I think Pogba is a good option this week away to an awful Leicester defence, and I expect him to play the whole game to get into the loop and prepare himself for the congestion.

              What are you planning?

What about Speroni -> Adrian and then get Pogba next week? I'd keep Hazard - fixtures are great and he'll come good imo. I think both your options are decent though, so you won't go too wrong with either. Good luck!

I'm waiting on Valencia news. If he's fit then I'll probably either save a FT or do Francis/Daniels -> Masuaku. If Valencia is out then Valencia -> Masuaku (which leaves me enough cash for RLC -> Pogba next week)

Unfortunately I can't afford Pogba for free if I bring in Adrian this GW, as I have exact funds for RLC to Pog. Cheers man for your thoughts!

I see man, looks like a sound plan, although I prefer Ogbonna as I think he is more likely to play both DGW games. You stuck with double Bou defence, wow, that's not nice. Stock up your defence with some nice budget picks over Xmas. West Ham, Everton and Huddersfield the best shouts imo.

      What’s the deal with Depoitre?

Has this lad been playing regularly? I thought Mounie was the boy at Hudds.

Completely obviously to the current trend. Is Andre Gray a better pick at 1.0 more?

They are competing with each other. Wouldn't touch any of the 3 myself. Gayle or Austin

Mounie picked up an injury a few weeks into the season that kept him on the sidelines for a while didn't he?

      Any thoughts appreciated?

      Pope
      OTA-Christensen-Jones
      Salah-Maherz-Haz-RLC
      DLC-Kane-Morata

      Elliott-Mee-Carroll-Mariappa

      1FT 0.1 ITB

      a) Morata > Austin
      b) Morata > Austin + T Carrol > Sterling/sane (-4)
      c) Any other transfer suggestions?

Final a chance to say bye bye to Carroll.

After blank gameweek, would you prefer Lanzini or Otamendi?

Lanzini: WBA/tot, hud, BOU, CRP, bri, WAT, liv
Otamendi: cry, WAT, liv, NEW, WBA, bur, LEI

On paper, Otamendi's fixtures looks good... 😮
