With Premier League action resuming this weekend, we have launched our latest Captain Poll to canvass your opinions on the best armband options for Gameweek 23.

A home encounter with Everton provides Harry Kane (12.9) with a golden opportunity to atone for a disastrous double Gameweek 22 that produced just three Fantasy Premier League points against Swansea and West Ham.

As well as topping that Gameweek’s poll, more than 1,320,000 (24.2%) of FPL managers handed him the captaincy, with 121,000+ trusting the Spurs striker with their Triple Captain chip.

Those backing Kane again will be comforted by his brace against AFC Wimbledon in the FA Cup yesterday. Furthermore, he collides with a Toffees defence that has conceded more shots (81) than any side over the last four Gameweeks.

His team-mates Dele Alli (9.0), Son Heung-min (8.1) and Christian Eriksen (9.3) could also profit.

Intriguingly, all six goals that the Merseysiders have conceded over the last nine Gameweeks have been scored by midfielders, with Charlie Austin’s brace in Gameweek 13 the last time a striker breached their backline in the league.

Of this trio Alli has the slight edge in terms of form, having scored twice and assisted a further four goals over his last quartet of league matches. However, Son has also impressed over this period with two successful strikes and as many assists – indeed, the South Korean has scored in all but one of his last seven outings at Wembley Stadium.

At home to a managerless Stoke side that have shipped a league-high 27 away goals, Manchester United’s key assets are bound to be popular.

The number one transfer target for Gameweek 23, Jesse Lingard (6.3), has emerged as a viable captaincy option having dominated the Red Devils’ attacking play since cementing a starting berth in Gameweek 14.

Over that period he has been involved in more than half (53%) of his side’s goals, having found the net seven times and assisted two more. His goal in the FA Cup against Derby on Friday further underlines his potential ahead of this clash, which is the first match for the Potters since Mark Hughes’ departure.

Despite missing three matches through suspension over that period, Paul Pogba (7.9) is second only to Lingard among Jose Mourinho’s charges for goal attempts. The Frenchman was handed licence to roam forward away to Everton last time out, claiming two assists and 12 FPL points – his first double-digit haul since Gameweek 12.

Romelu Lukaku (11.3) also scored against Derby in the FA Cup and could attract interest, despite only finding the net twice in his previous nine league run outs.

With a solitary shut-out and 18 goals conceded on their travels, Leicester’s poor away defence should encourage interest in Chelsea’s assets for their head-to-head at Stamford Bridge.

Should he recover from a calf injury Eden Hazard (10.7) may be the most popular option. Even though his penalty in last week’s clash with Arsenal was a first goal since Gameweek 15, the Belgian’s six efforts in the box was more than any single-Gameweek player.

Marcos Alonso (7.3) form and broad points potential continue to smash the myth that a defender should never be handed the armband.

Over the last six, the Spaniard has averaged an impressive 8.8 points having notched three goals, an assist, four clean sheets and six bonus points. He is also second only to striker Alvaro Morata (10.5) for shots this season among Chelsea assets.

Manchester City’s trip to Liverpool is among this Gameweek’s trickiest ties to call and could hinder the prospects of both sides’ big-hitters.

At home, no side have allowed fewer shots (63) or goals (four) than the Merseysiders, while their visitors have been similarly miserly at the back on the road, shipping a league-low five away goals.

But with both sides in fine attacking form, their defensive records could be shattered this weekend. Away from the Etihad, Pep Guardiola’s troops have had more shots (193) than any other side while at home only Spurs (233) have fired off more goal attempts than Liverpool’s 225.

Those backing City assets in the poll could well turn to former Red Raheem Sterling (8.9). The winger has earned attacking returns in each of his last five league starts, notching three double-figure FPL points hauls along the way.

With no competition for a start from the injured Gabriel Jesus, Sergio Aguero (11.7) should also attract interest – a brace in the FA Cup against Burnley this weekend brings the Argentine’s goal tally to six in his last eight starts.

Mohamed Salah (10.1) looks the man most likely to prosper for the hosts – providing, of course, he recovers from a groin injury. The Egyptian – who is FPL’s top scoring player – has produced a goal or assist in 12 of his last 13 league outings.

Meanwhile, Roberto Firmino has served up four sets of double-digits in his last six starts and has moved to just two points off Aguero in second in the FPL forward standings. He is, however, currently involved in an FA enquiry following Friday’s altercation and exchange with Everton’s Mason Holgate.

Voters may also consider taking a punt on an Arsenal player. The Gunners travel to Bournemouth desperate to make amends for yesterday’s FA Cup exit to Nottingham Forest and two successive league draws, to West Brom and Chelsea.

The Cherries last kept a clean sheet in Gameweek 13 and since then have shipped 20 goals, with only Stoke conceding more.

Three goals and an assist in his last four league run outs again makes Alexis Sanchez (11.8) an explosive differentia, although one that comes with risk attached as speculation mounts over a rumoured move to Manchester City.

Mesut Ozil (9.3), with two goals in his last quartet of starts and Alexandre Lacazette (10.3), with three assists over the same period, could also plunder the points against Eddie Howe’s erratic defence.

The poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under recent comments.

Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of the Gameweek 23 deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

      Waiting on GW24 for that.
Hoping Mahrez stay, known beast on upcoming and no distraction Leicester team.
We dont know how he will settle at Liverpool, and where he's going to play. Of course he would move to an att jugernaut that can give him plenty of chances....but would he play 10.role?

Hmm - I think go for a more sure thing (Pog; Lingard) for Cout and reassess as January develops. I'd worry about getting a transfer rumour victim in

Lingard has come in for me. Son was always a 1 GW punt and I'm freeing up funds basically whilst getting the form player in.
Definitely nailed his spot in the xi, I just fancy what Lingard offers more to draft him in right now.
Sure I'll rue my decision on the weekend, but swings and roundabouts....

Think Son at his price might be worth keeping.

But wouldn’t like to get Lingard next week as he has 2 tough fixtures then against Burnley & Spurs away.

Yes. Great run-in for Everton, with just 2 from the top 6 to play in their final 11 gameweeks - just wait and see how he adapts to the PL, but the price today was very kind indeed

Deffo - I don't mind twitter, but I've left a lot of FB groups I've been added to because some people are happy to spew the most disgusting stuff. What's even weirder is that it's their own name, rather than an FPLdonym. Don't get that. Even twitter is mostly alright, apart from that Trump guy that everyone is going on about

comes as no surprise. People running them hide behind freedom of speech & expression when it's obviously all about making money.
It cannot be beyond the capabilities of the obviously highly intelligent people that run these companies to differentiate/moderate what is or isn't offensive/abusive or in some cases even dangerous to people.
If a normal media forum like this site can have clear rules that are enforced shouldn't beyond these big companies with their resources to do the same.

My little experience of it just left me cold. The very worst traits of people I thought I knew entering into bragging matches with each other. As you say it has the potential to be a destructive place for teenagers. I am glad that my kids hardly ever used it during their formative teenage years.

My final comment on there today....and probably for a long time to come...

Just to be clear being as I seem to be in trouble again....

There's nothing wrong with young folk today, or kids, other than how they react to how we treat them in terms of pressure and how we belittle everything about them.

Anybody who wants to start telling me that...

All young people these days are lazy
All young people these days are fat
All young people these days are thick
And on and on and on...

Can just go and stuff off and stick their copy of the Daily Mail up their own arse.
      Is that clear.

Believe it or not that was directed towards an ex copper who stuck his nose in telling me all about "kids today"...

Just thought that might amuse you.

Oh and FWIW. My passion for it came from when I used to work with emotionally disturbed children in schools before I became the full time carer to my son.

We as a country have absolutely no respect for young people at all. As a nation and as an older generation we breed all their problems for them with endless criticism and pressure.

It's shocking the state some young people get into through that....

Thoughts on a wildcard to this:
    Fabs
    Alonso Virgil Stones Jones

    Kane Kun
    Elliot Carroll Quaner Marriapa
Basically seeing it as a 352 as Alonso is so attacking

Oh yes. He's also becoming essential, just because if he scores and you don't own the punishment to your OR is pretty acute. Was a nice differential for a while, but is now a shield signing for many to mitigate exposure to his points.
He is, however, the mid range striker we were looking for !

Exactly, the 3rd striker was doing my head in, it's too expensive to have 3 big hitters up front and no one cheap really did well for me. I switched to 4-4-2 a couple of weeks ago and it's been a great decision, I'm currently in the top 100.

Wow congrats! Also having issues with third striker here, got the goals/assists from DCL for a while but not sure what to do next. He's benched for this week and will decide if I release the funds from him by selling on to a cheapie (Quaner if ok) or seek to upgrade to Tosun

Thanks. I got DCL a few gameweeks back, but decided to just get Jones as the 4th playing defender, because he'll easily outscore him.

If upgrading I'd also have a look at Wilson - cheaper than Tosun, proven in PL and playing while Defoe is out injured. Also has 2 goals in last 3. If downgrading, and if Firmino is banned, I'd have a look at Solanke

Same here a sad sorry list of Diouf, Wilson, Okazaki, Austin (who at least was OK till crocked) and the current clown Depoitre. Done my season in and can't wait to drop for a 4.5 and be done with it.

Terrible terrible players at that price range. Despite having them for a long time I realized the change of formation is the way to go soon enough to improve my rank enormously. Gabiaddini, Joselu, Wilson, and DCL, I think they got me 3 goals in 18 gameweeks, when I could've just been playing someone like Mee with a clean sheet in every second game.

I got him for the easy schedule to cover Chelsea with Morata and him instead of Hazard. I'm glad I decided against Hazard, Eriksen was just too good to let go for me then (despite the blank period).

Had a look at him for our player profile on him - signs are promising, lots of shots actually and by all accounts quite a few Turks on twitter (shockingly, perhaps) singing his praises. At 7.5 and with Everton's fixtures in the run in (think they play 2 of the top 6 in their last 11 games or something, plus no blank in 31) many might find themselves with him in their teams.

Probably Tosun to get him in now, though

Lacazette was an interesting one - decent record, but a lot of it was actually due to penalties, he'd never exceeded 20 goals a season without them... and he'd had a fair few for Lyon.

So tough to call. At home Huddersfield are strong but can concede. I marginally favour Huddersfield victory or possible a 0-0. I'm playing Masuaku and Schindler that game so hopefully its the most boring game ever.

Similarly with Palace Burnley so hard to call. think there are goals there though. If I had Zaha or another attacker in this game I'd be minded to play them.

            Haha yeah

            Huddersfield 1 West Ham 1

            Van La Parra 58'
            Kouyate 74'

            Crystal Palace 1 Burnley 1

            Benteke 75'
            Hendrick 28'

But it was also based on my own home and away form tables - both matches predicting 1-1 draws, with marginally less goals predicted in the Burnley palace game, so if a clean sheet is going to happen, I'd say it would be in that one 🙂

Haha yeah not the returns you want from a DGW player, in fairness though, the hammers were very unfortunate to concede v WBA. And 4 pts from a 4.5 player is better than par per week, if that helps you feel slightly better about it? 😛 yeah I don't have anyone in that one either bar RLC, but he seems to have disappeared, any idea whats happenned to him?

I own Schindler and Adrian, but have both on the bench as things stand!

haha yeah exactly. OHH YES I do have RLC too, and I'm starting him I think too (d'oh - completely forgot about him). Dinnery said it was an unspecified injury to me on twitter - suspect it's just fatigue as with Arnie where they aren't truly injured but need a bit of respite so they come out of the fabled "red zone"

Schindler was on my list (badum chhh) but I opted for Dunk in the end. I did look at Lascelles too and captain hindsight is telling me I should've gone for Jamaal over Lewis - just hope he (Dunk) finally scores the goal he's been threatening to all season. Any money it's the week I ship him out.

Ah ok, thats encouraging then 🙂 Hope he's back as he's by far the best of the 4.5 mids and I'd like to not have to transfer him out until my next wildcard ideally.

Haha have you been looking at my FPL team name? 😉 Very good, I'm rotating Schindler with Duffy at the moment, they work quite well as a pair, and I'm convinced Duffy or Dunk has to score soon! Lascelles is great isn't he? A real leader and has improved Newcastle a lot since returning from injury, they really missed him when he was out. Haha always the way!

Yeah me too - exactly the same feeling. Was saying on the pod this week that I'm going for a fluid "core 9" formation jobbie going forward, with RLC, Dunk, Oggie, Kenny and Quaner (who'll come in for DCL all being well) rotating around a core of players who play every week. RLC such a good option for home games and got 2 assists in the last 3 before he got injured!

Haha I'm sure that pun has been made ad nauseam - including by yours truly. Yeah I can see how that'd work, think Nick got Zanka in to do a similar job but hasn't had any reward yet save a 0.1 price rise. Duffy was the one I was most interested in due to the pen box touches and headed attempts, but I elected to save myself 0.1 by getting Dunkster in and hoping he doesn't score anymore own goals!! Well, whichever one of them scores will have one of us saying "**** Du" at the other 😉

About to go to the gym and just been downloading the pod to listen to while I am there! 🙂

Ok cool, I've got a nice 4-4-2 setup at present, with most of the value in 9 players aswell: 3 of the defenders, 4 mids and 2 strikers. I'm quite happy to leave the others be for now as bench players or rotation options and focus my transfers on jumping on emerging big hitters to maximise my value on the pitch now we are out of the congested fixtures. Son or Kane may need to go in a gameweek or 2 and I've booked in a vertonghen to stones transfer too. Salah may well need to return to my team too.

Yeah RLC has been excellent at home, and even got that assist away to Leicester too so was hinting at away form too!

Haha indeed. Schindler got me 9 points the other day which was nice, I am slightly concerned by Kongolo arriving though, not sure who he threatens the most really. Haha very true! I look forward to saying it! 😛

Haha I've templated my way to my move this week already, with Lingard in for Sonny. Looking like:
                          DDG
Dunk Alonso Otamendi / Oggie Kenny
                          RLC Salah Lingard Sterling Arnie
                          Kane © Firmino / DCL
So achingly template it's unreal! Just the way it goes I think tho come this point in the season.

Hope you enjoy the pod!! Catch up here on on another platform soon no doubt

Yeah thats true to an extent, although injuries, jan transfers, and the BGW and DGWs to come will soon shake it up I imagine. Keep an eye on Sanchez's possible move to City. Gives Pep another option up front. Aguero's current attraction is his nailedonness...take that away and his value falls. He can't score points on the bench.

Yep - think that's a good shout. I've freed up the cash to enable it as, on paper, Kun for NEW WBA bur is a strong (c) for all games, however as Jonty says if Sanchez signs he's in a tail spin.

Also I wouldn't be too keen to remove Kane just because of big games!

True Jon but if Sanchez doesn't move I would be very tempted to go Kane to Aguero for those 2 or 3 games anyway and see then. I've a feeling he could get a bag ful in those two home games.

Looking at it objectively, the Utd fixture will be tough, but Kane does enjoy playing Arsenal and their defense isn't much to write home about. Liverpool I find tough to call. There's also the bonus, looking more longer term, that Kane definately has a fixture (and a decent one at that) in GW28 where he is a standout captaincy option.

Sanchez 14 points in his first DGW last year for 42 overall.

DGW37, when most of us played bench boost, he got 27 points, and Kane 28.

Thank you sir, I'd completely forgetten his score in that DGW! Was it Stoke and Sunderland he faced?

Can't remember that one, Sunderland for sure, I don't know about Stoke.

The extra DGW36 match was vs. Southampton, but again I don't remember the other one.

        Lukaku - 4
        Sanchez - 14

Haven't played it this year, but ideally I want it on Salah in a DGW. I don't trust Kane.

25 and then a 27. It’s not that many points really is it. A loss of maybe 20. Don’t stress it

Bardsley looks like an absolute bargain at 4.3 as he is nailed on and is playing for Burnley who have already kept 9 clean sheets this season

Yep, good shout - tough three home games coming up (where they tend to keep their cleanies) but after that it's looking pretty rosy in the run in. I notice Lowton is also down to 4.4.

Tomkins another in the bargain bucket category emerging - 4.3 and nailed with Dann out for the season.

Tomkins also looks. Palace is starting to play better defensively. Is Lowton or Bardsley first choice

Think Lowton was the first choice but he's quite a defensive full back, as is Bardsley. Dyche probably just flips a coin - both seem to offer the same output

He was over 100% a few days ago and didn't budge.

Plus he's had 68K transfers in over last few days.

He may 'do a Cedric' and forever be on the edge of a fall.

Sales associate Tom Logan is miles ahead of his nearest FPL rivals after diligently managing his transfers over the Christmas fixtures, but trails them all in the revenue chart that will determine if his contract is renewed.

Logan’s line manager Donna Sheridan said: “Tom is always hunched over his computer looking serious, but he never seems to actually make a sale or answer emails.

“He looked pale last week and when I asked him what was wrong, he explained that he’d triple-captained Harry Kane because it was a double gameweek but he’d picked up a knock and now he might have wasted a wildcard.

“I didn’t know what that meant so I just nodded and made a mental note to sack the useless f**ker as soon as the Christmas decorations come down.”

With Lukaku back Pogba could drop deep again, bit risky imo. Although Pog looked great in the last game.
