Though every Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season has its ebbs and flows, it would certainly feel that the tides are changing with greater frequency than ever this term.

Just a few short weeks ago, driven by a strong Christmas schedule and the outstanding form of premium defenders such as Marcos Alonso and Nicholas Otamendi, numerous Fantasy managers (myself included) found themselves stacking up at the back – hoarding high-priced defensive assets from the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City, and Manchester United while making financial sacrifices further up the pitch.

Yet on the back of one of the most disappointing defensive Gameweeks in recent memory – in which a suite of premium defenders either failed to provide returns or, in many cases, feature altogether – the notion of trimming funds from the backline is becoming increasingly popular.

Moreover, a glance at the upcoming fixture list demonstrates huge potential for a number of so-called “smaller” clubs to provide strong clean sheet prospects over the medium term.

With this fact in mind, this week’s Technical Area will be assessing the defensive capabilities of these sides based on their recent form and upcoming schedules.

We’ll also appraise a number of budget defensive options in an effort to identify those lower-priced players with the potential to match bigger-budget rivals during the season’s run-in.

Nope, nothing bar holgate's word on the matter suggests Firmino said anything racist

I also think the fact Liverpool let sturridge go suggested they are very comfortable legally that no big racism ban coming

Word of someone will never be enough. For an investigation yes (hence the investigation) but if denied by the perpetrator then no legal footing for it with no third party evidence

The Kane / Salah captaincy is a tricky one.

I feel it’s Kane if your chasing and Salah for safety.

Salah for me. He is probably on pens too and is clearly chasing the golden boot giving he took the Huddersfield pen

Don't see why it's that tricky to be fair. I'm a spurs fan and salah is the best option this week. Somone does an hot topic with a load of numbers and it changes everyone's mind . People was going salah crazy after the spurs game. He's on fire

Salah is unreal with consistency. Absolute no brainer imo. Harry is more than capable but it's a NLD, anything can happen and stats are irrelavant. Yellow and red cards could be rife. I certainly wouldn't be taking numbers into account in a game like this

Not a fact at all... and if your chasing the smart pick is the less captained option as it is really a 50/50 run.. or 33/33/33 if Aguero counts as well

I think i'm going to go for Kane just because I think it's pretty likely he'll get 90 minutes, pretty likely he'll get something, and there's that minimal chance of a huge haul

Southampton more often than not concede 1 goal at home and i think they're turning a corner. I don't expect a rout

Have Kane and Salah. Currently on Kane.
      Reasons why:
      - In form
      - Great record against Arsenal
      - Arsenal defense is horrible
      - Has a great record at lunch time kick-offs
      - Race for Golden Boot is getting tighter
      - Spurs are in good form

I can’t decide between Mo and Harry. 2nd in 2 of my mini leagues by 40ish points and feel they will go Salah so this is tempting me to Kane but this might be bad logic and I’ve messed up my captaincy a lot this season! Watching Kun at Burnley rules him out for me

I see your point, but isn't the best thing to do to play your own game and not to base your decisions on other players actions? In other words, captain a player who is most likely to deliver a haul, if not in a defensive position. Also those "odds" you presented were without any foundation.

4 blue in the next 5 and the article talks short term.

I think the problem is down to what Deus says though.

When scanning the fixture list for the upcoming Gameweeks, a handful of clubs stand out as offering particularly kind defensive match-ups over the next six-to-eight Gameweeks.

Sort by difficulty over the next 5 has them mid table. Only gets worse after.

Thought I'd settled on Salah as C then saw Paddy Power anytime goalscorer odds :-

    Aguero 1/2
    Kane 8/11
    Salah 11/10

    Hmm

saints haven't been all that bad defensively of late, midtable for chances in the box conceded, pretty much fewest shots on target conceded, and very few errors (albeit against mixed opp wat, CPL, TOT, wba)

Arsenal on the other hand have conceded three defensive errors leading to a goal in this time period. That's almost one a game, literally handing away almost a goal a game on top of whatever you can conjure up yourself

      Kane for me

I've switched b/w Salah and Kun a number of times. Really a toss up. Aguero at home is hard to overrule, yet Salah is consistently scoring and has struggling opponent. I think the tipping point for me may be that Leicester are messed up with Mahrez out, and Pool are a bit unpredictable.

Starting to consider Salah as a decent option. My main concern is, can he keep it up? Time to throw caution to the wind and just get him?
