Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Chelsea And Leicester Progress

FA Cup wins for Premier League sides are achieved in markedly different ways as the Gameweek 31 schedule remains threadbare.

Chelsea and Leicester City gave Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers two more compelling reasons to perhaps delay the Free Hit chip by confirming their absence from Gameweek 31.

Had the Blues lost at home to Hull City and Leicester done likewise against Sheffield United in last night’s FA Cup fifth round ties, then Gameweek 31 would have been boosted by an additional two fixtures.

As it was, both top-flight teams progressed to the quarter-finals, to be played on the weekend of March 17, meaning their league matches on that date will now have to be rescheduled.

The Blues were due to travel to Burnley, while the Foxes would have entertained Arsenal.

We’ll have a far clearer idea as to the final make-up of Gameweek 31 once today’s four cup ties are played, but it’s already starting to look like a particularly light weekend of Premier League action.

Only two matches are already certain to go ahead – Stoke City v Everton and Liverpool v Watford.

They will be joined by the losers of this evening’s tie between Huddersfield and Man United.

If that’s the Terriers, they’ll entertain Crystal Palace in Gameweek 31, while United will travel to West Ham should they bow out of the cup.

There had been a strong case for managers to employ their Free Hit chip to cope with Gameweek 31’s fractured schedule.

But exploiting the benefits of the chip on a Gameweek involving just three matches would be a tricky proposition; potentially there will be very few effective differentials at our disposal.

And as the FA Cup quarter-finals could very well involve exclusively Premier League teams, that will also have an impact on Gameweek 35’s fixtures when the semi-finals are due to be played. That would make using the Free Hit chip at that point all the more attractive.

Willian the Conqueror

Last night’s victories couldn’t have been more different.

Chelsea were home and hosed by half-time, four goals to the good thanks to a brace from Willian and one each for Pedro and Olivier Giroud, the latter scoring his first for his new club.

Assists came from Cesc Fabregas, Emerson and two from Giroud, while any thoughts of an unlikely Hull comeback after the break were quickly snuffed out when Willy Caballero saved a penalty.

While Willian’s clinical finishing will have turned heads, the biggest news for Fantasy managers arrived in Antonio Conte’s post-match press conference. The Chelsea boss confirmed that he expects Marcos Alonso to return from an ankle sprain to face Barcelona in midweek.

Alonso is the most sold asset player of Gameweek 28, with over 112,000 moving him out. His remaining owners may now look to hold the top-scoring defending, though investing in Chelsea assets at present is an unattractive proposition.

Conte’s men will face both Manchester sides – and both away – over the next two Gameweeks, with a visit from Spurs looming in Gameweek 32.

The Gameweek 31 blank therefore means they’ll play three of the top five over their next four matches, with two Champions League Round of 16 clashes with Barcelona to add into the mix as well.

Vardy strikes again

Leicester fielded a strong side against Championship promotion-chasers Sheffield United but had to wait until the 66th minute to break the deadlock.

Jamie Vardy scored what turned out to be the winner, set up by the returning Riyad Mahrez, who came out to boos but left the pitch to a standing ovation.

Vardy has now notched in five successive matches in all competitions and has picked up 55,000 new owners ahead of Gameweek 28. Only Oumar Niasse and Roberto Firmino have enjoyed more transfer interest.

Meanwhile, Fantasy managers will have welcomed Ben Chilwell’s presence at left-back for the Foxes. He ousted Christian Fuchs to provide another hint at the pecking order. Club skipper Wes Morgan also returned to the teamsheet, as Aleksandar Dragovic dropped out of the squad.

Leicester’s schedule is far more obliging than Chelsea’s.

A visit from Arsenal and a trip to Spurs are the only blots on an otherwise agreeable fixture landscape all the way through to the end of the season.

But with their Premier League status in no major doubt, coach Claude Puel picked a very strong team last night to signal his intention to make the FA Cup a priority.

That could eventually lead to squad rotation in the league, although their schedule, for now, is sufficiently well-spaced to make that an issue for the longer term, particularly if they make the cup semi-finals.

The whole picture will be a lot clearer following today’s ties and tonight’s quarter-final draw. But for now, Gameweek 31 looks to be a case of make do and mend for most FPL managers.

For further reference, we’ve written two articles providing a detailed look at the FA Cup implications for Fantasy managers.

Part One is available here, while Part Two can be found here.

Defence is awful, downgrade a mid and upgrade in defence. There is value in the 5m- 6m midfielder bracket. JWP has got 41 points in the last 6 gameweeks for example.

Both Ward and Tarkowski are on the brink of returning, so Lowton might be risky. Chilwell and Simpson also risky. Robertson may give way to Moreno.

      Look at Francis?

      1. We Will Klopp you
        • 7 Years

Cheers. Lowton plays RB, so his competition is Bardsley. I like the idea of Francis in for one of the lei defenders but I found it interesting that they played a full strength team in the cup and both Simpson and Chilwell started with Fuchs benched. Robbo won't be dropped Imo, has looked great but will give it some more tinkering.

Yep, Moreno has been fit for about a month now and still no rotation other than in the cup where Moreno looked terrible. Matip is a far more riskier pick than Robertson. Lovren has looked very good last couple of games and it's telling that Lovren was picked v Spurs and in the CL

    What's up amigos!?

I was thinking to go ALL IN in order to catch up the first places in 2 of my leagues and I decided to do a TEST using my WC only picking shitty defenders (I might get 0 points). I know is a bit insane, but what you think of this:
    Lössl - Elliot
    Alexander-Arnold - Edwards - Ferguson - Long - Mbemba
    Groß - Salah - Sterling - Eriksen - King
    Firmino - Agüero - Kane

Thanks for your advice guys! (I know is too silly but maybe the midfielders and forwards points can compensate the points I need from the defenders)

It's a piece of cartilage in your knee that cushions and stabilizes the joint. It protects the bones from wear and tear. But all it takes is a good twist of the knee to tear the meniscus. In some cases, a piece of the shredded cartilage breaks loose and catches in the knee joint, causing it to lock up

If you don't have all your chips left, you may not be able to wc or free hit for gwk 35 meaning you will have to plan for this when also trying to maximise gwk 34. Arsenal could be key to people in this situation

Well they have 2 upcoming games against Man City so gives us the perfect chance to assess who will be best to get in. One drawback is if Arsenal do progress in the Europa league then they may rest players in the league like Utd last so we could have the scenario where even in a DGW most of the players only start one game.

    Remember Burnley?

It's time to reconsider our old friends, the CS magnets, especially in light of their upcoming fixtures. With SOT/EVE up next and whu/wba/wat getting you through GW33, they look to be a real bargain. Additionally, if they enjoy a DGW34 against LEI/CHE (which looks likely), their affordability could enable big-ticket players elsewhere in your squad.

Personally, I have already gone in on Mee, Lowton, and Gudmundsson--Mee because I already owned him, and the latter two to allow an upgrade to my forward line. This almost certainly necessitates a GW31 Free Hit, but I found myself moving in that direction already, and I would much rather ride these players in their GW28/29 fixtures than prepare for the BGW with players from Watford and Stoke (the closest analogues for price). I should note as well that I'm going without a WC, so I also have an eye on the end of season fixtures, and Burnley's look as promising as any, with ars in GW37 my only real concern.

Call me crazy, but if you're overlooking Burnley to get ready for GW31, I think you're missing out on two incredibly favorable fixtures in the meantime.

I think early in the season Burnley where overachieving in terms of clean sheets. i.e. conceded lots of shots but managing to sneak a cleanie. They have reverted to norm now, hence a lot of 1-1 draws and 1-0 defeats. I am happy to hold Mee for favourable fixtures but I don't expect too many cleanies.

Some people on here talking a lot about gw31 and getting enough players in for that gw31. Quality is not great. Only Liverpool have the players you would really want before gw31. Possibly Bournemouth attackers. Won't it be more rewarding to get say Mahrez and Eriksen in for the next 3 gws. Great fixtures and near the top of the points charts. I can then have 10 gw31 players for minus 4 over 3 gws

    Liverpool Watford
    Stoke Everton
    Bournemouth WBrom
    Huddersfield palace

Lots of good players from these teams already in most squads. Shouldn't be too hard to get 8 or 9 players out, without loading your squad up with shite. E.g.

    VVD, Daniels, Kenny
    Salah, Theo, Mili, Shaq

I've no WC so need to come up with a plan there! But getting 7 or 8 out in GW31 (with zero hits) looks easy enough... might need a few hits to properly prepare for doubles... or alternatively writeoff GW31 & use the 4 or 5 FTs in between times to target only DGW'ers
