Scout Notes – Chelsea Held By Barca

A defensive error costs Chelsea a Champions League win against Barcelona as the Blues begin a season-defining run of fixtures.

As detailed in our recent Burning Question article, the jury is out on whether to sell or keep Fantasy Premier League’s (FPL) most productive defender, Marcos Alonso.

Many managers have already made up their mind – the Spaniard is Gameweek 28’s most sold player, with 130,000+ moving him on – and one of the key reasons for that is his side’s brutal schedule.

That started last night with the first leg of their European tussle against Barcelona; a match which finished 1-1 to set up an intriguing return at Camp Nou in three weeks’ time.

The visitors’ away goal, from Lionel Messi, gave them the edge in the tie, but Chelsea will have been heartened by a disciplined display in which they took the lead when the excellent Willian found the net from an Eden Hazard pass.

The Brazilian also hit both posts as the Blues allowed Barca most of the possession, but precious few sights of goal.

Coach Antonio Conte made seven changes from the team that beat Hull City in the FA Cup at the weekend, with only Antonio Rudiger, Cesc Fabregas, Willian and Pedro retaining their places.

Alonso returned after a three-match absence in all competitions, but the manager’s biggest call was to keep both Alvaro Morata and Olivier Giroud on the bench, opting for a fluid front three in which Hazard was deployed as a false nine to flood the central areas and force Barca to attack down the flanks.

That move has tended to reduce the Belgian’s offensive threat this season, and so it proved again last night as he managed just two attempts on goal, neither of which were on target.

Post-match, Conte was quick to praise the front trio’s recent impact, with Willian’s displays lauded in particular.

“I think our three strikers played very well, they played a fantastic game. Willian played really well against Hull and scored twice. In the last three games we scored eight goals and six have come from Pedro, Willian and Hazard, they work very well together.

Willian has the potential to play this type of game in every game and I hope to see this for a long time. Against Hull he was fantastic, tonight he was fantastic and when you play in this way the coach doesn’t have any doubts about you playing.”

The worry for Hazard’s 8.2% FPL ownership (and, indeed, those holding Morata or Giroud) is that Conte could employ similar tactics again as the Blues travel to Man United on Sunday and then host Man City the week after.

A London derby with Crystal Palace, the return leg in Barcelona and a Gameweek 31 blank when they play an FA Cup quarter-final at Leicester City follow before March’s international break.

And when all that is done and dusted, Chelsea will still have the small matter of a Gameweek 32 visit from Spurs to contend with.

The major concern will surround that visit from Palace in Gameweek 30 – four days before the trip to the Nou Camp. Conte’s teamsheet for the Eagles visit will be difficult to call. While he is unlikely to risk resting key men at United or City, that would not be the case for the encounter with Roy Hodgson’s charges.

Sales of their most popular players, Cesar Azpilicueta (22%) and Alonso (20.8%), have been ongoing for the past six and two Gameweeks respectively and look set to continue.

But the Blues’ form has picked up since shock defeats to Bournemouth and Watford, and it took a loose pass from Andreas Christensen to hand Barca their equaliser last night. The young Dane has endured sales of his own in six of the last seven Gameweeks as a series of ill-timed injuries denied his FPL ownership clean sheet points.

Given their resilience against the La Liga leaders, many FPL owners could now consider sticking with the Blues’ defensive assets for Sunday’s trip to Old Trafford.

Chelsea have kept three clean sheets in the last five Gameweeks, while Man United have scored just three goals in four league matches as the balance of the side has been compromised by the arrival of Alexis Sanchez in the January transfer window.

Hazard owners will hope that Conte will opt for a more progressive side involving Morata or Giroud on Sunday as that would allow the Belgian to play in his most effective role as a free-roaming support for the lone striker.

FPL managers are clearly torn as to what to do with the midfielder at present.

He’s the team’s most bought player of Gameweek 28, with close to 20,000 new owners, while 22,000+ have also sold him on – behind only Alonso and Azpilicueta.

But with Man City and a blank Gameweek looming ever larger, the days of most Chelsea assets are surely numbered until their schedule turns kind again from Gameweek 33, with at least one double Gameweek to factor in as well.

How is karius playing nowadays, saw some CS for him ,is he a good option if you can't have pool defenders like VVD or Robertson ???

    Thoughts??

Thinking of spurs and arsenal defenders & karius with good fixtures can come in if Pickford doesn't keep CS

I'm going DDG to Karius. More pts than VVD and nailed - I understand Klop stated he is no 1 keeper.

Liverpool tight at home - may consider rotation GK for away but fixtures suit saves n CS away!

Think VvD best option as more chance of additional points. However, I would go Karius over any other Liverpool defender if you cannot afford VvD

Yeah, thinking of arsenal & spurs defence so VVD will make too much money in defence ,that's why thinking about karius

I would stay away from the Arsenal defence, you pay a lot of money for next to no returns (I refuse to accept that Monreal is going to keep doing what he's done for the last month or so).

The Otamendi point is the relevant one for me. You would hope for similar returns from VvD as you would from Ota for about £1m less. You can get similar returns to Karius for less than £5.8, surely?

Good point & yes Monreal can't score always ,will assess a few weeks then decide on VVD or karius and also maybe keep a utd defender instead of arsenal ones

I think that is the best option. United are very solid at the back so unlikely to be hurt greatly in the coming weeks. It gives to time before GW31 to assess which third Liverpool player to go for.

I agree with this - I do prefer VVD as basically a cheaper Otamendi in terms of goal threat, but if you want to get the "most" nailed player (Klopp's said he's the no1!) it'd be Karius.
Feel a bit nervous about relying on Liverpool - Klopp has no hesitations with heavy rotation to favour continental competitions!

Alonso plays imo, Jones to VVD as blank week ,later switch to Davies, and Walcott is nailed

Alonso plays. But I've gone for VVD here to free up funds plus get the sole premium option worth owning for the blank gameweek!
Son to Walcott perhaps, but a good next 3. I'd keep him for one week, then if Lamela/Lucas has forced him out of automatic inclusion then sell on, no rush on EVE mids

So this is my plan until WC in GW32:

GW28 - Alonso, Otamendi and Lingard > VVD, Bauer and Erikson (have 2FT so -4pts)
    GW29 - Carry over FT
    GW30 - DDG > Pickford (or Jones > GW31 defender)
    GW31 - Erikson and Albrighton > Sigurdsson and Shaqiri/Ibe (2FT)
    GW32 - WC

Would give me 10 players for GW31 and allow me to have Erikson for next three games with only 1 hit.
    Good plan??

Kane could easy haul this week and a VVD clean sheet seems likely, so reckon you've got a good chance of making up that -8pts if not this week then definitely next week. Go for it!

Being swayed by the reports that Hennessey may have picked up a serious knock (unconfirmed) and of course my Spurs heart which has probably caused me to slip down the rankings this season haha.

thoughts on this potentially stupid -8:

Aguero, Hazard, RLC, Dyer -> Niasse, Mane, Eriksen, Mahrez

    Salah Mane Eriksen Mahrez Sterling
    Kane Wilson (Niasse)

-8 probably too much, but like how it sets me up for the next few. Kane/Eriksen become Firmino/Siggy in GW31, possibly.

Here's what I can field in GW31 without hits.

    VVD
    Salah(C), Walcott, Shaq, McArthur
    Firmino, Wilson

Should I use the FH chip, or perhaps spend a couple of hits on a couple extra defenders, or just leave it at that?

Of course, this would mean ignoring Spurs and Arsenal assets completely until then and missing their juicy fixtures.

Yeah, if I use FH I will bring in Siggy, Daniels, Bauer and Pickford/Hennesy. Also replace McArthur with Milli.

Out of those only Siggy and Milli worry me a little - they could each bring around 10 pts.

That looks good! no point getting defenders with hits that only get you 2 points at the end

Could be 2 points, could be 15 points. Thanks for the advice still 🙂

Would you rather have Alonso, otamendi and albrighton or Mee, VVD and Erikson till 32?

Jones owner, what you will do?
    A. Hold
    B. Replace with ....
Thinking to sell him for VVD.
Still have Ota and Alonso though.

Same boat. Wait until presser, then if out, replace with VVD.

I'm holding. If fit, he has three fixtures where Jose will be looking to keep a clean sheet between now and the blank. Also the fact he doesn't play tonight increases his R & R time from his last run out

I'm replacing with VVD regardless if Jones is fit.

VVD outscores him in the next 3 games and VVD doesn't blank in GW31.

      It's a no brainer.

Agree, though if Jones is fit I would say getting rid of Ota (or in my case - Lingard) is more pressing,

      B for a -4.

VVD also a season keeper while United have some bad batch of fixtures.

Best pick here? A probably concentrates on the BGW31 and B more the next 3!

    A. Kun+Ox+Jones >> Firmino+Walcott+VVD (-4).

    B. Kun+Ox+Jones >>
    Vardy+Eriksen+VVD (-4)

    Current lot:
    Pick
    Jones / Duffy / Christen
    Son / Salah / Sterling / Ox
    Kun / Kane / Wilson
    (Elliot, Choupo, Ota, Kiko*)

Same boat as you in that it will take a hit to get VvD in. FWIW I am holding Ox this week as there's a good chance of returns (if he starts) and he at least got a start in the last league game

If you take into consideration the other transfers then yes.

I'm doing Jones, Lingard and Richarlison > VVD, McArthur & Eriksen.

Doesn't feel as bad then saying a -4 for a defender.

I'm going to bring Kane in next week.
For the moment, do I bench Aguero with the possibility of Jesus returning?

    Fabianski
    Naughton/Maguire/Davies
    Walcott/Sterling/Salah/Willian/Mahrez
    Wilson/Firmino

What do you think of this current team for the next GW?

    Schmeichel (Speroni)
    Alonso, Simpson, Smalling (Bauer, Gomez)
Shaq, Salah (C), Hazard, Sterling (Mili)
    Wilson, Firm, Aguero

    1 FT. 0.1 itb.

Next week doing Gomez, Haz, Aguero > VVD, Siggy & Kane (-4)
The above transfers would give me 8 players playing in GW31.

Outfield players have gone in goal before when goalie is sent off/injured and all subs have been used or there is no sub keeper. Sure I remember Dexter Blackstock doing it for Southampton in the Cup at Newcastle a few years ago.

Is Sanchez, Jones, DCL ➡️ Mkhi, VVD, Vardy worth a hit?

    Pickford (Elliot)
    Ota, Mawson, Alonso (Schindler, 3.9)
    Haz, Salah, Sterling, Lingard (Carroll)
    Aguero, Firmino, Wilson.

Have 2FT, concerned about Lingard, and having money tied up in Ota & Alonso. Also if I should be selling Aguero for Kane?
If I had to keep someone out of Alonso and Ota leaning towards Ota for a week to use Alonso money elsewhere. Any advice would be much appreciated. Cheers

        Nothing itb unfortunately.
        Tossing up a few options:
        a) Aguero, Hazard, Lingard > Kane, Mahrez, 7.1 midfielder (-4 and leaves me with Ota and Alonso at the back still).
        b) Lingard, Ota, Alonso > VVD, Vertonghen, 7.7 midfielder (-4 and leaves me with no Kane for the moment)
        c) Any suggestions - very stuck at the moment.
