Our usual post-match delve into the Gameweek data arrives this evening as we check in with some of the standout players from the previous round of fixtures.

Gameweek 31 remains a factor in our selection, with Everton and Bournemouth midfielders catching the eye.

Watford’s defence under Javi Gracia is also analysed, while Brighton’s playmaker and Leicester’s attack-minded centre-half more than merit their place under the spotlight.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Currently trying to decide on an XI myself, whether to go for Firmino Salah Mane or drop Mane for VVD/Robertson, Shaqiri + Stanislas I'm looking at as cheap MF's, also not sure whether I'll even field an Everton player, they're dross currently

3 Liverpool attackers, you know which

      Shaqiri

      Walcott

Plus any 6 assorted mediocre players, maybe a Hudd def, a Bou pair of your choosing, Bauer from Stoke, Coleman maybe.

If you can field minimum 6 decent players in GW31 without using FH, it may well come in handier GW35 or later...

    For the next 2 only:

    A) King + Stanislas
    B) Walcott + Mounie

Not keen on the reasoning that covering more teams increases points returns, guys.

Brain fart moment. I somehow figured they were playing WBA this week (even though I planned to bench Wilson). Thanks for pointing out the obvious to me 🙂 That's why I ask for the reasons haha

I’m in a similar predicament. Not sure if I bench Wilson (TOT) or Shaqiri (MCI) this week. Thoughts?

Probably benching both this weekend, but I always took it as a given that I was benching Wilson anyway. He's just a massive disappointment, and has been for both the stints I've owned him. No longer with the promise of pens, and with King and Defoe around, not even nailed again. If it weren't for GW31, I'd have sold him a couple GWs ago, and I def don't wanna play him against TOT defence. Others are even possibly selling him for King next week.

Shaq, on the other hand, is on form and set pieces. There is a lot more hope for him, even if he isn't actually likely to get much more than Wilson this week. I feel like if the game was simulated 1000 times, Shaq would get more hauls, and more baseline points from appearance and baps, so overall he's the better pick in my mind.

Hope that answers your question 🙂

Well, when you put it like that I can safely say goodbye to Wilson 😆 !

I had him on my bench mainly due to the point you raise about rotation with Defoe lurking. I think Howe would want to play Defoe against his old club too, his experience is exactly what Bournemouth would need in that game.

Completely agree with you, Wilson has been one of my worst transfers this season.

      A for me, by default

B is too risky and highly based on Baines fitness after long time out, plus Mounie can get dropped for Depoitre at a whim of Wagner.

C is all eggs in one basket

The specific suggestion from someone in the community was to give all players from the winning team extra bonus.

We were discussing whether that was a good idea.

      1. Deulofail

Okay Andy, thanks. I remember you arguing (against another Scout) that a player *shouldn't* be rewarded for being on the winning team, or vice versa. One example you gave was the great performances of Palace players, who lost to United. I believe you were making the same point as me about individual performances because at least one other person in the discussion thought otherwise. It wasn't just the the winning team bonus (although that did come across as a spur-of-the-moment idea to me, rather than a community suggestion).

Anyway, I found it interesting to hear the views of other players. Even though I can sometimes wholeheartedly disagree with them! 🙂

Not sure if anyone agreed to giving the winning team bonus or whether they were pointing out a community comment but either way yes, I don't agree with it for the same reasons as you 🙂

The thing is in some cases it would work well, others it wouldn't - pretty much the same as the BPS we have now

That’s the problem with the big squads of rich teams, even excellent players aren’t nailed. Think it makes the game a bit more luck based than skill based each year, and hence detracts from the enjoyment.

So excessive money not only killing football, it’s killing FPL slowly as well.

    Foster - Elliot
    Dijk - Otamendi - Mee - Hegazi - Ogbonna
    Sterling - Salah - Deulofeu - Carroll - Shaqiri
    Kane - Firmino - Agüero

    0.4M ITB, 2FT.

Either doing Deulofeu to La Parra, or Deulofeu+Otamendi+Carroll to La Parra, Schindler and Walcott for a hit, giving me 9 players ready for GW31 (plus a transfer between 30 and 31).

Josh from Always Cheating summed up the problem with the bonus points system perfectly on today's pod.

If the best player in FPL by a country mile and arguably the best player in the league (Salah) doesn't get bonus points, then there is something inherently wrong with the system.

Kane falls way short in the distribution metrics compared to Salah. Salah is a more rounded player in terms of assists and chances created. Kane just shoots at will.

Palace were at home. Mourinho is a disgrace. United fans should remember Fergie's philosophy and be protesting outside old Trafford about Mourinho's tactics. Instead they eat prawn sandwiches and applaud when he gets offered a new contract.

I want the bonus to go to incredible players. What Salah has done this season is almost beyond belief. He is head and shoulders above everyone else. The guy deserves a lousy bonus point.

Would you rather CDMs get the bonus for successful backwards passes?

I'd drop the passing bps. If Salah was a forward, he'd get 6 more for the goal. If you want CDMs involved, award tackles and workrate more bps.

Brandon from Always Cheating argued for something like save points for CBI to get CDMs involved. It could work.

I'd like it to be really basic. Remove all the repeated rewards from the normal points allocation, and allow the players with the best cbi, passes made, chances created, etc to earn points steadily for contributing during a game, rather than large jumps in bps for a single action.

Should allow for some closer representation of a good performance, rather than moments of luck or unluckiness.

Either top 3 get bonus or every player with 11-15 gets 1bap, 16-20 gets 2baps and 21+ gets 3 (or whatever tiers would be appropriate).

This would increase the pool of legitimate options too, since the game wouldn't only be about assists, goals and CSs, but good individual footballers (plus still a lot about goals and assists).

            • 9 Years

I also think this makes the bps itself more exciting as a minigame within the game, as you watch players vie for the top of the bap table. You can see how the actions on screen relate to the performance score in the baps, and know it's not all going to be decided by a goal (which already decides other points allocations).

    3. Deulofail
      • 9 Years
      7 years, 9 months ago

Just by glancing at the bps, it's easy to tell it's silly. Rewarding people again for things they've been rewarded for already, and scaling it the opposite way around too (e.g. goals for defs>mids>forwards vs forwards>mids>defs). It's just ill-conceived, transparent, blatant bonkersness!

I think people have just got used to it, because I'm sure most people who actually take a look for the first time must be truly taken aback. - And then they get over it.

When goalies get bonus points for chucking the ball in their own net and costing their team 2 precious points in a relegation fight also springs to mind.

I’m an Otamendi owner and benefitted from his BPS regularly this season but for basically doing nothing passing it about sideways 5 yards, back 5 yards, forwards 5 yards and repeat. Hardly breaks sweat, 98% pass completion, one or two easy interceptions and suddenly he’s one of the best players on the pitch in that star studded Man City side.....nonsense.

        What if it's 0-0

Jones kicks the ball at De Gea who isn't even looking his way. The ball goes in the net. De Gea own goal 0-1.

United then go on to score twice and De Gea makes 12 saves in the process. Should he have no chance at bonus because of Phil Jones?

Yes. He still conceded. And if he wasn't looking at the game in front of him he doesn't deserve a bonus point. Not watching the game is a pretty fundamental error that shouldn't be rewarded.

Salah gets a bonus point for every goal he has scored by being classified as a midfielder. We can start using Salah as an example of the weakness of the bonus point system when he is correctly classified as an attacker.

What about limiting bonus points to those players that don’t score any additional points during the game?

      “Unsung hero points”

If a player already has got goals, assists, clean sheets, save points etc they do not qualify. Bonus could then go to best of the rest who contributed most to game without actually scoring any points.

I'd like to see players who score consecutive goals in a match get more points.

So Kane would get 5 points for his second goal; 6 points for his third.

It was badly flawed with no transparency.
There were serious arguments every weekend.
We joke about it now but certain players always picked up bonus points, Ferguson & Adam were the famous two but the John Terrys of the world were always handed out points - reputation got in the way.
Some downright bizarre awards with no idea why. at least there is a transparency to this system, flawed-yes but much better than the MitS system.

Man in the stand will likely give Salah the 3 baps most game if done right

It would also bring defensive players like Kante and Matic etc into the game. Not the best example from Jonty with the Barry Ferguson knocking it from side to side because players annoyongly get baps for that now.

It only failed last time because it was done badly.

I'd probably still play Walcott as Brighton are finding it hard to keep clean sheets. A few more people (at least those planning for GW31), I feel, may be bringing him in this week due to the good fixture - so it's okay to play him.

VLP is definitely an alright shout; appreciate that there's not many other good options eligible. Could get another Liverpool attacker, although United isn't the -best- fixture...

People been saying that FPL is getting boring this season.
People saying that bps system is flawed.
People complaining that Salah should be getting much more bonus points each game.

Wow, how boring would this season be if the 'perfect' system was giving Salah 3 baps everyweek?
    Captain Choice, forget it.

Nobody mentioned KdB, who's favourite (I believe) to win Player of the Year not winning enough baps?

I think there's some tweaks that can probably be made, nothing is perfect but the hysteria over the BPS is too much.

Give the amount of games and BPS given out there's not that many truly horrendous errors.

People only focus on the negatives.

    I’m really low on GW31 - only 5 players!
    2ft though - and £1.2 itb

Any suggestions? 31 players have *

    DDG Elliott
    Otamendi VVD* Davies Ogbonna Long
    Salah* Sterling Walcott* Shaqiri* Gross
    Kane Firmino* Ayew

elliot to lossi and ogbonna to bauer

      Sterling to Mane

Gross to whichever midfielder you can afford

Ignore the defenders, all generally crap and usually concede

7 attacking players will be fine

Are there any teams from the top 6 likely to have a DGW in 34 and then play in the BGW35?

Man City possibly. Arsenal will be 7th by then.

Arsenal, and one of City/Spurs I think depending on who wins Swa v Spurs in the cup.

Ben crellin's twitter probs has something more concrete

What should I do with my team?

    DDG Adrian
    Otamendi Daniels Bauer Ogbonna Kenny
    Salah Mane Sterling Walcott Ibe
    Kane Firmino Ulloa

    2ft 2.3m itb

Not using free hit in 31.

Worried about getting 11 out this week. Only got 9 last week. Schindler and Mounie in for Kenny and Ulloa?

Think Coleman is worth the money? Everton are looking poor

I'm getting Coleman for Mee this GW and I think it's worth a gamble. Hardly anyone owns him and he's a fantastic player going forward. Yes, Everton do look poor, but he could still get points and I'm willing to take the fairly small risk of getting rid of Mee for Coleman and starting Coleman vs BHA and stk.

Ashamed to say I am a Richarlison owner 🙁

Does anyone out there also still own him? And what are your plans with Arsenal and Liverpool up next? I have 7 GW31 players including him but I’m considering parting ways with him. Is it too sideways?
