Scout Notes – Spurs out, City through

A pair of 2-1 home defeats have contrasting repercussions for the two English teams as Spurs bow out and Man City march on in the Champions League.

A change of personnel to accommodate a tactical switch undid all Spurs’ good work in just three minutes as Juventus found a way to win at Wembley.

The home side dominated the first half and deservedly went in at the break 1-0 up when Son Heung-min’s mis-hit shot, from a Kieran Trippier cross, found the net.

But Spurs failed to convert that dominance into further goals and when the Italian changes came, they turned the tie on its head and put the visitors through 3-2 on aggregate.

The loss may lead to a backlash when Mauricio Pochettino’s men travel to Bournemouth on Sunday, though, equally, the Cherries might fancy their chances against a side still struggling to cope with an emotionally draining encounter.

Pochettino made just the one change from the team that beat Huddersfield 2-0 last weekend, with Trippier in for the suspended Serge Aurier.

The roles could well be reversed at the Vitality Stadium, where it would also be no surprise if Son – owned by 11.1% – is rested to the bench.

The South Korean was the standout performer last night and made it five goals in his last three matches in all competitions with the opener against the Italian champions.

That form has persuaded 76,000+ Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers to make him the second most purchased player of Gameweek 30.

But he’s now started three fixtures in a week – the only Spurs player in action against Juventus to have such a workload – and could well lose his place to Erik Lamela, who was a second-half substitute last night, as a result.

Ben Davies (23.7%) is another threatened by rotation.

The left-back has seen his ownership rise by close to half a million in the last two Gameweeks and is currently the fourth most popular player heading into this weekend as well.

He, too, has been busy, however, with nine straight starts in the league prior to the Juventus match suggesting that Danny Rose could be in line for minutes at Bournemouth.

A blank Gameweek 31 follows Sunday’s match and Pochettino might well start fielding close to his first-choice team in the FA Cup for a serious shot at earning his first silverware as Spurs boss.

They face Swansea City in the quarter-finals, following that up with a huge Gameweek 32 trip to Chelsea that would go a long way to securing a place in next season’s Champions League should they win at Stamford Bridge.

The FA Cup semi-finals take place during Gameweek 35, when Spurs are due to travel to Brighton.

More pertinently, if the preceding Gameweek turns out to be a double-header, it would involve a visit from Man City and, very likely, Newcastle as well.

Should that be the case, Pochettino may be tempted to freshen up his options for the Magpies encounter, though last night’s exit should now lessen the chances of rotation over the run-in.

Nonetheless, those looking to Wildcard in Gameweek 32 could limit their short-term interest to Kane – all the more so given that Spurs’ next three league matches are on the road – with Son’s outstanding home form surely set to be a factor from Gameweek 34 onwards, given that four of their final six league fixtures will take place at Wembley.

Guardiola gives it a rest

Man City lost at home to Basel, but still eased into the Champions League quarter-finals 5-2 on aggregate.

The defeat was their first at the Etihad since 2016, but it was a price worth paying as coach Pep Guardiola made sweeping changes to his team.

Six players from Sunday’s win over Chelsea were either benched or rested and, crucially, the five who sat on the sidelines – Ederson, Nicolas Otamendi, Kyle Walker, Kevin De Bruyne and Sergio Aguero – stayed there throughout.

David Silva wasn’t even in the squad, while his namesake Bernardo continued his rich vein of form by setting up City’s opener for Gabriel Jesus, who was making his first start since returning from injury.

The Portuguese midfielder scored in the first leg in Switzerland and also has two goals and an assist from his last four Gameweek starts.

Meanwhile, Raheem Sterling’s owners were left none the wiser to his availability for the Gameweek 30 trip to Stoke City on Monday, with the England man omitted from the squad.

Another of last night’s team, Ilkay Gundogan, could also be under threat as he has started eight of the last ten league matches.

A full 90 minutes, and goal, for Jesus shouldn’t cause Aguero’s 26.7% ownership too much alarm, at least for Monday evening’s match.

The Argentine has started eight straight league fixtures, while De Bruyne has been an ever-present and Otamendi has missed just one Gameweek, so all three were certainly due a rest.

But Jesus is being eased back into action after missing close to two months of football, with the frenetic schedule to follow their Gameweek 31 blank the period when Guardiola will have to call on all of his resources.

City’s postponed fixture at home to Brighton is likely to drop into a double Gameweek 34 also involving a trip to Spurs.

But there will be both legs of a Champions League quarter-final and domestic matches away at Everton and home to Man United to accommodate before that.

That marks out Gameweek 32’s trip to Goodison Park as a rotation hotspot in which Jesus could replace Aguero up front – prior to his injury, the Brazilian started nine of City’s first 11 away matches this season.

At the back, John Stones partnered Aymeric Laporte at centre-half and both played the full 90 minutes without ever truly convincing as a pair.

The Englishman had managed just nine minutes across the previous five Gameweeks and although Guardiola seems to view Otamendi and Vincent Kompany as his preferred centre-back combination, he can now choose from four of them to ramp up the potential for rotation at the heart of his defence.

City join Liverpool in the Champions League quarter-final draw, which will take place a week on Friday.

The ties will then be played on April 3/4 – prior to Gameweek 33 and 10/11 before Gameweek 34.

Sterling's coming back from injury so not rotation as such.

Aguero rotated last night so he'll start Monday. Perhaps spend Sunday down DFS to buy a bigger sofa? 😉

      Good question. Some interesting posers:-
      - Will Arsenal show up after their trip to Milan?
      - How are Spurs going to react after their CL disappointment?
      - Utd/Live Bus parked or goalfest?
      - Will Sterling show his face?
      - Will Everton wake up?
      - etc etc

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Manchester City issues

With tough fixtures and inevitable rotation due to Champions League commitments is it time to ditch Manchester City options.

Or are they so good that even off the bench their assets are worth owning?

For GWK 32/33 Wildcarders which Man City players will make the cut?

More specifically for this week is it time to finally show the door to Sterling, who may not even start against Stoke on Monday?

And in the commotion around GWK 31 are we taking the eye off the ball regarding City, particularly regarding the GWK 30 captaincy. Could Aguero (c) be the surprise secret to success in the next set of games?

If Kane blanks - as he often does - and Aguero runs riot it - as he often does - it could be highly lucrative to back the Argentinian.

more about one game though Jonty... you'd be violating your own rule of only picking guaranteed starters. Because maybe Jesus will play Monday to build up his match fitness. Last night was a joke game for City and no better than a run out in the reserves for Jesus to build up fitness.

Sterling to Theo 'loves a haul' Walcott is on the cards at this point given how much time he's missed. Starting to remind me of Rose last year who was always okay but never came back.

Aguero definitely has to be a look in for the captaincy this week, if I had him I'd be very tempted to lock him in ahead of Kane

Capping Kun this week I think. Rested alongside KdB and Silva. Should be all guns blazing at Stoke. Worried about Spurs' morale also after that defeat.

Probably lose Aguerro heading into 31 and WC in 33 to get Kane for the Stoke fixture

I think City will shortly be in a unique position amongst recent english champions league sides, of having their league title won whilst also being a major contender for the european trophy. This I think makes them very dangerous assets to invest in due to rotation.

In goal Pep has not been afraid to play Bravo for certain games. We already know he has 4 centre backs for 2 positions, and very shortly will have Mendy back to fight it out with Zinchenko, Delph, Danilo and Walker for the full back positions. Further forward there is huge competition in midfield once sterling returns, and Jesus and Aguero in competition as the striker.

However all this was true earlier in the season also, and we still invested in City, as they had the potential to score so heavily, and even do so off the bench.

As we want to minimise funds on the bench, I would only consider their cheapest attacking options, such as the 2 Silva's. But I may still go completely without, as without the league title to win, whats the motivation in the league to put 6 or 7 past a team on the saturday when you're playing Barcelona on the Tuesday?

Tough fixtures don't worry me, it's not like City will stop scoring. Rotation-wise - again, I don't think it's going to be as bad as people assume. I remember a conversation with Mark around GW24-25 about Aguero - I was advocating selling Kane for Aguero given the fixtures, Mark said he didn't believe Aguero would start all the matches given the fixture congestion. In the end, Aguero ended up playing every single minute vs. Newcastle, West Brom, Burnley and Leicester, scoring 8 goals in those 4 matches and outscoring Kane by 46 points to 20.

Now, I'm not saying Aguero will again play every minute with Jesus back, but I think we're overthinking the threat of rotation a bit.

Only own KDB right now as got rid of sterling for Mane last week.
In my GW32 WC, I will ponder the thought of either keeping KDB or moving to B silva/Sane. Obvious trouble but do you just play through the rotation knowing that you'll have a strong enough bench considering GW34 BB etc.

      Interesting topic!

For example: Is Sane playing one out of 2GW's scoring more than a UTD/Che mid playing every GW, you could argue he might.

This feels like a question that I won't have an answer to until we see the DGW fixtures - hopefully before GW32.

Yes we know there'll be rotation but we also know that SGW players should not be ignored in DGWs - few will ditch Salah. Up until now, City assets have managed fine with rotation and I fancy a player like Aguero with 100+ minutes could easily match a Lukaku or Vardy with 160+.

I certainly won't be writing them off yet, but I will probably sell Aguero before GW31.

Man City don't have tough fixtures, they dominate everyone they play (apart from Liverpool who they don't play)

Re Sterling, waiting until the presser before doing anything, not selling someone with 15 goals and 10 assists because some bod on the internet thinks he might not start, need to hear it from Pep with a bit more certainty about his status.

    1) Bentekkers
    2) Wilson
    3) King
    4) Rondon
    5) Deeney
    6) Tosun/Niasse
    7) Mounie
    8) A N Other

I have been wanting him since January hauls and still haven't got him, definitely hurt my rank and could explain the 30k 8 week stagnation but I think its a risk to go with out and would only get him in for FT. Not worth a hit and getting rid of VVD for example if you already have 3 liv.

Im going Bobby less. I could switch Van Dijk and depoitre, Alonso for a hit to get bobby but think its better to go without as Own VVD,Mane,Salah.

Looking at depoitre > King/Benteke/Mounie for GW31 depending on performances and minutes this week. I own Wilson.

Repost from bottom of last article...

What would you do? Plan is wildcard GW32, bench boost GW34, free hit GW35. 1FT, 0.0 ITB.

    De Gea
    Otamendi, van Dijk, Chilwell
De Bruyne, Salah(v), Sterling, Shaqiri, Pritchard
    Kane(c), Firmino

    (Elliot, Wilson, Duffy, Kenny)

    A. Save FT (easier to distribute funds next week for GW31)
    B. Duffy > Schindler
    C. Sterling > Walcott/Sigurdsson/? (don't mind risking Sterling for one more week)
    D. Other

    Some loud thinking here. Currently have 6 for 31 along with 2FTs. (3 pool + 1 wba + 1bou + 1stk)

I think i'm pretty well placed for 32 with pool playing pal, brom play BUR, bou playing wat. In addition, Spurs play Che (i have 3 of them and it's a good fixture). City play Everton and i have Kun. Adrian also has SOT at home. That makes it 11 playable folks for 32.

Of course i can optimize this team but is it worth playing just 8 or 9 in 32 (I can add a couple HUD players who play new in 32 and punt on some United/Lei/City/Arsenal players in 32 as well).
Which is why i'm thinking of going into 31 with 9 and no hits, ignore EVE players and go into 32 with a couple of juicy punts for a hit.

This also makes sense to me as Che and Swans (2 teams i'd be investing in on the wc and can help me FH in 37 instead of 35) have poor fixtures in 32.

Just some loud thinking and your input and thoughts would be great.

9 will be above average for top 10k. If you were WCing in 32 it might be worth a punt on an extra player but I don't see good odds on many hits paying off.

    Pope
    Alonso - Otamendi - Dawson
    Salah - Son - Sterling - Walcott
    Kane - Firmino - Niasse

    (Elliot / CM / Daniels / Wimmer)
    2 ft & 0.1m

GW30: Sterling to Van la Parra
GW31: Son & Niasse to Mane & King

Sound plan? Gives me 9 players for GW31.

Given that Kenny is almost definitely not going to play I have only six nailed gw31 players and 3ft in the bank (2 this week, 1 next). All chips in play and had always planned to WC in 32-33. Would you lean towards...

    A) Free hit?
    B) Just get as many as possible (9) and save FT for 35?
    C) As above and take a hit where it seems worthwhile?

    Copied from old article:

Any suggestions on what to to here?

    Adrian
    Speroni

    VVD
    Azpi
    Ward
    Duffy
    Jones

    Salah
    Mahrez
    Son
    Shaq
    Albrighton

    Kane
    Firmino
    Niasse

    2FT and 0,5ITB

For GW 31 I am thinking:

Adrian --> Lössl (or Butland depending on funds)
    Son --> Walcott
    Duffy --> Bauer/Aké/Schindler

I'm also considering Albrighton --> Pritchard (would mean a hit) if he's passed fit and dependant on my GW30 score.

However, I'm a bit tempted to do Son to Sané for this gameweek, given that Son started yesterday, and is better at home. That would mean one less GW31 player though.

    Any thoughts?

The Scout is selecting five Fantasy Premier League players set to make an impact in Gameweek 30.

    Theo Walcott (EVE) £7.2m
Now is the time for FPL managers to reassess Everton's winger.

After a flying start on Merseyside, Walcott has not produced a goal or an assist in any of his last four Gameweeks.

But the underlying statistics suggest that he could soon make amends.

    Trigger happy
Since his Everton debut in Gameweek 24, Walcott has produced more shots, 13, and shots on target, six, than any of his new team-mates.

He has fired 10 shots from inside the penalty area, a tally bettered only by the 20 of Mohamed Salah (£10.6m) and the 15 of Sadio Mane (£9.4m) among FPL midfielders.

Walcott faces a home fixture with Brighton & Hove Albion this weekend.

The Seagulls travel to Goodison Park without a clean sheet in their last eight Gameweeks.

    Goodison gains
They will attempt to shackle an Everton attack that has impressed on Merseyside.

The Toffees have scored 23 goals from 14 home matches, compared with only 10 from 15 away trips.

That is reflected in Walcott's returns. His two goals and an assist in Everton colours have all been produced at Goodison Park.

    Stoke trip
Saturday's contest is followed by a trip to Stoke City seven days later.

That fixture is pivotal to Walcott's appeal; Everton are one of only eight teams in action in Gameweek 31 due to the FA Cup quarter-finals.

A recent loss of 120,000+ in ownership may indicate that FPL managers are losing patience. But Walcott's potential as a midfield option for the next two Gameweeks is difficult to match.

Kane doesnt seem good captaincy that appealing now. Kane and entire team may be in bad hangover after missing those easy chances vs Juve.

What would you do? Plan is wildcard GW32, bench boost GW34, free hit GW35. 2FT, 0.3 ITB.

    DDG - Elliot

Alonso - Otamendi- Naughton - Kenny - Ogbonna

    Salah - Mane - Sterling - Mahrez - Mili

    Kane - Wilson - Niasse

    Cheers
