Rivalries are up and running in the ScoutCast as my old adversary Granville moves 16 points ahead, while Az closes the gap in his chase of Jonty.

Inevitably, Gameweek 31 will likely have a say in these contests, with opinions on that reduced set of fixtures divided in this week’s episode.

Against the backdrop of Ragabolly’s brilliant and extensive research, we investigate the real cost of Gameweek 31 hits and the benefit on offer for Free Hit managers.

Elsewhere it’s the Fantasy Premier League rules that get a grilling thanks to your community questions. We wonder whether the Norwegians have stolen a march with their Fantasy Eliteserien inventions as we assess the merits of the current chips.

Then the controversial bonus decisions of Gameweek 29 spark another appraisal of the Bonus Points System, with Granville taking his turn to be nostalgic as he pines for the mysterious “man in the stand” of yesteryear.

This ScoutCast was first beamed live via our YouTube channel on Tuesday evening. Be sure to subscribe to get notice of future live episodes.

Normally agree with Jonty on most topics, the man is a genius. However, his stubbornness against "players likely to haul" is not on point for me and could really influence the many watching the Scoutcast. Yes, facts are facts, Walcott hasn't hauled recently but it's all about playing the odds. We all know the more players you have (playing in 31) the better chance you have of hitting a haul, that's just a fact. Does this mean it's going to happen or warrant a -8 or -12? Possibly not. But to disregard the likes of Walcott or King just because they haven't hauled recently doesn't mean it can't happen. As they say you can only win the lotto if you buy a ticket.
I'm also quite surprised that he's going to have 9 or 10 players in GW 31 if this is his attitude.

Also don't understand why he disregarded Mark's point about the number of games Walcott has played. He couldn't exactly produce double digit hauls from the Arsenal bench.

Yes that argument was one of the daftest things I've heard on the scoutcast for some time and that's saying something.

It was v strange. Walcott has only had a handful of starts this season and has a haul.
He's also hauled lots in the past despite being in and out of the ars team.
He was a v explosive player as recently as last season. Baffling.

I'm not worried about historical data with Walcott. He's away to Stoke and Everton suck. Doubt he hauls

Yeah, not likely a haul but think he's a decent shout for 30 and 31 though.

Bgws are a poisonous cocktail. Experience says Jonty isnt far off the mark. You are right they might haul. But its the might part that is the issue.

I find it strange that he has so many to play in 31 when he has this attitude though. Why is he going to have 9 or 10 playing if he doesn't think they'll do well? His attitude says "I will only play 3 Liverpool and Shaqiri", yet he's loading up.

Fair enough! The probability of one of your players "hauling" is now increased though no matter what the previous stats say. I think that's where my main point lies. Why not get in Walcott? Not likely a haul but increases your chances of one. BTW while I have you. Love your work

The probability of a player hauling is irrelevant to whether they're in your team or not.

I would take what Jonty says with a large pinch of salt. I think most of what he says is just to disagree with things said.

Earlier in the season he went from Firmino being useless, to being great, to being useless again and now he’s great.

His inability to grasp Mark’s point regarding the extrapolation of Walcott’s games and hauls was baffling.

Also he’s very narrow minded to looking behind not in front in regards to points potential and struggles to think outside the ‘stats’ box.

Indeed. Massive fan of the eye test. Been known to make many an impulse move without even looking at stats.

Sometimes it works - Vardy .

Sometimes it doesn’t - Hazard after his Everton haul last season.

Walcott’s just not passing the eye test.

But someone who is for me is Coleman. If I do go for a Toffee it could be him. Also think he has more chance of returns v Stoke.

Two on target shots in his last four isn’t great - he’ll need to improve his accuracy - but that’s been his problem for much of his career.

i think that marks point that most people that play the free hit will most likely get walcott in and so it would be wise to get him in as a blocker because he does have potential to haul if he does or doesn't is secondary.
The pool of players to choose from is so small that people playing the free hit will have 3 liverpool shaq walcott for sure so to own these is probably essential.
Also i thought Az and Andy's point that they will look at getting 3 or 4 punts in and take the gamble spend 8 or 12 points and get in players like benteke, mounie and zaha (if fit) is a reasonable strategy as they said you just need one of them to haul to make the hits worthwhile and these are players you would never go for otherwise the only problem is it locks the wildcard in for 32.

The ownership angle is a good point.

People do forget at times that fpl is a competition - against mini lg rivals, top 10k, etc.

If you are leading and everyone chasing has Walcott then it’s a valid tactic to block.

No. Just saying it’s a valid tactic.

Blocking is frowned upon but mainly because when mini lg leaders block it annoys chasers.

I’m currently looking at Butland and Mane for free to take me to nine.

I’m open to a hit but I want it to be someone I think could do well gwk 31.

Coleman could appeal - chance of cs and assist.

                  Benteke maybe.

                  Josh king

                  But none really excite me.

                  Will be scouting this weekend.

ya i think minimizing the differentials your rivals have is a good tactic when ur leading and in a week like 31 when the pool is so small and you know the key players its wise to just buy them and block.
I bought shaq in and my rival got walcott and we both bought the other the next game week. he got walcotts double figure haul tho and ive got nothing out of him but cant afford to sell till after 31.

                A question for you Jonty
I own bauer, shaq and walcott so does it make sense for me to get an Everton def/keeper in for 31 or best to avoid I can afford coleman if that makes a difference

There’s two ways of addressing the blank:

                  1. Hedging - going for attackers v defenders and hope one lot does well. Problem with this is you are minimising returns for some more f your players.

                  2. Go all out - avoid encounters and bet on one side prevailing. This is high risk and high reward.

A good way to sort of get both is to get defenders with the chance of points at both ends of the pitch - which is why coleman’s Assist potential appeals.

Cheers, that seems to be the best way to go ahead, to get Coleman in and get a bit of both options you've mentioned

The only issue I have with bringing him in is I will have to then choose between bringing mane or king in, unless I sell Kane to get both but that would lock me in for a wildcard in 32, but then I could take an additional punt and follow the route Az and Andy were planning on

I think Jonty is great on the Scoutcast - it would be boring if they all agreed, someone having a different opinion forces others to think deeper about their position and defend it. As community manager I imagine it's part of his job description to create debate amongst the community - here we are all typing away and debating!

With the Walcott argument there are valid reasons for having him, and valid reasons for ignoring him (and Everton). I actually think Everton are playing two form teams in the next two fixtures and whatever Walcott's xG stats may be, I worry they won't do too well regardless. Then they play Man City in GW32!

I think as an FPL manager it's important to remain level-headed, and not get dragged into defending one side of the debate/argument. Psychological framing is important to bear in mind - read this http://whogottheassist.com/psychology-corner-framing/

Essentially finding the counter argument is a worthwhile exercise. Weigh up both sides and then, with as little emotion as possible, decide what you think is best. That's what i'm going to try to do on the Walcott debate, I don't own him but he is one of the players under serious consideration for this week.

For the love of guacamole! I'm not going to read some psychology article to help me question my own decision making in FPL 😀

There isn't even an argument about Walcott. It's Jonty's attempt at banter with Mark. It boils down to Everton having a couple of nice fixtures, he's a good price, he might score a goal or two, and he's packed his suitcase for GW32.

Let's not turn it into a Freudian exercise.

Strictly speaking it's not a Freudian exercise, but OK point taken 🙂

I think there are valid reasons to ignore Walcott, I'll be simple with this - Everton are shit, they are playing two form teams; Brighton just beat Arsenal, confidence is up, they play as a team, Everton are mostly square pegs in round holes. But get him if you want, I might get him, I might upgrade McArthur, he stands a better chance of getting points than McArthur does, I will acknowledge that.

sorry mate, I was just teasing 🙂

I got Walcott in before his haul, amazingly, and that was only because I wildcarded. Let's face it, we're only considering him because of GW31 and a bit of nostalgia. But in a GW where only 8 teams are playing, then why not?

You did a Jonty on me 😉 Well done on getting Walcott before his haul. Yes 31 and nostalgia is precisely why I am considering him. I think the ownership argument is a good one, is it worth the risk going without him in a week with so few teams playing?...

And actually, he's quite fun to own despite Big Sam's tactics. He's not been playing that badly, i think it's just that people who got him in after his haul are frustrated.

Siggy might be worth the shout for one week, or Tosun too. Both more suited to the free hit, perhaps.

Unless Wilson shows signs of life in GW30, I'll be ditching him for King on the FHC. I'll likely have Firmino, King plus one other - Tosun or Benteke (haha). I'll make sure it's someone no-one in their right mind would get with a FT 😉

I think it is also worth pointing out that Jonty is having an excellent season, and out performing the others on the Scoutcast. He's even ahead of Jay at the moment. Perhaps with this Walcott argument he's simply trying to create confusion to make sure he stays ahead?

Feeling confident with this line up this week. Means I bank the ft and would either have 10 next week or 11 if I -4. Any thoughts?

Depends. Was he not in the squad because he still isn't fit enough to play or because it was a dead rubber that they didn't need him in? Hopefully Pep gives us something useful tomorrow.

Best case scenario was he came off the bench and did well, he didn't and instead wasn't in the squad, which casts too much doubt over him and means it's probably best to sell.

The problem is they have to focus on the Europa League as their route into the Champions League for next season. Will be hard to predict Wenger's starting lineups in the league if they're going all out for Europa.

Fair point but having the EL to shoot for should give the whole squad a lift, if Milan had batterered them their confidence could have been well shot!

I wanted a reason not to get Ramsey. After Milan no brainer Deulofeu>Ramsey with 2FT and roll the other FT. All the 31 players outside Liverpool are frankly rubbish

I think Ramsey is a great option, he's averaged 5.58 points per game this season which is great for 6.9m. He also has good fixtures. I might bring him in myself tomorrow depending on Sterling news

BPS and chips could be innovated for sure. Some great ideas out there. 10-15 best proposals should be voted on lets say 2 weeks before the end of the season by public. Similar to captain charts, highest picks implemented next season.

Just been reading through it all. I'm pretty exhausted with all the postulating and people having a pop at other peoples' strategies. It's probably how different religions started lol.

The FHC will boost any gameweek. There's a lot to be said for using it in a DGW to maximise all the latest information on injuries and form and pick your best 11. I'd still like to play the BB in a DGW, but perhaps the FHC is next best because it impacts 11 players while the TC relies on you nailing one player.

I do find it funny that at the beginning of the season everyone said the FHC would be great in a blank GW. The worse the blank, the better. Now, the tide of opinion has changed - coloured by the fact people have been using FT's to get GW31 players and they can't wait to WC in GW32. Perhaps we like to overthink things.

I have just read through it all too TS, exhausting (but interesting alternative approach Virg)!
It seems like pointless warfare to me as many managers with different teams, ideas, amount of chips left etc. are all shouting their opinion with blinkers on over various articles over the past while!
I'm sort of glad that my rank is so bad in a way that I can just have fun for the rest of the season and not care, just need to decide when is the best time to use my BB!
Creating a FH squad in 31 should be interesting and I will throw a few curve balls in for fun.

Just imagine if we were in the top 100, eh? I'd end up with analysis paralysis!

I'm as guilty as anyone at spouting my opinions on the FH GW31, but I'm not precious about it. Voicing strategies is what the community is all about, it's just inevitable that people will have a dig at the post because someone is thinking differently and "their way is best". It might be, it might not.

I wildcarded about 5 or 6 Gws ago and went with an alternative approach with a power mid and super weak forward line (Wilson/Ayew/Quaner). It hasnt worked out great due to sanchez fail but at least I tried to do something different. The point I want to make is that I got a lot of abuse on here whenever I posted my team etc. This season has been much more negative on here I find and there are also a lot of trolls. 🙁

I've tried Sanchez twice this season; both times on my WC, interestingly. Neither time did it work out.

I think we know that by being different with our picks that we're never really going to be successful at this game. I've finished top 2k before when I ran a team for my new born son, but in general I like being different (original?) and justifying the odd hit.

This season has been crueler than most for people looking for differentials or following the fixtures rather than the form. My team would've done far better recently if I had triple Liverpool and Man City attack + Kane and captain Salah. No need to vary from that, at all, for as long as I can remember.

I don't play the game too seriously but I have a broad knowledge of football and enjoy the challenge of FPL. I havently played too much differently than last season when I finished top 5k. But I think last season might have been the season of the maverick hit crazy manager haha!

I like a manager who takes reasonable hits. I think it says a lot about the person, tbh. Bravery, independence, lack of sheepness lol...we need more of these people wallowing outside the top 100k 😆

I'm the anti-dullard haha. TBH I think taking hits have never been my problem as most of them seem to work out well. Probably having too many differentials and captaincy fails are my rank killers.
This season I know exacly what went wrong.
                                1. Being very late to the Salah party (even though I monitored him pre-season and took him out last minute).
                                2. Selling Firmino early on.
                                3. Ignoring DDG in first half of season.
                                4. Holding Alli & Sane though their terrible runs of from.

Similar story here, mate. Next season, I must keep a couple of the highly owned players rather than ignoring or selling them prematurely. Better to have the highly owned players for captaincy and take a few punts on 2 or 3 others.

I watched the scoutcast on Tue night (I watch it most weeks) and subsequently read the hot topics.

And I still don't know what the hell Jonty was talking about with regards to not taking a hit on a blank GW player being dependant on how many double digit scores they have had this season.

                  wtf

Being a dullard is fine. But steadfastly sticking to a view just because you've done a bit of stats research and using that research to try and justify an unjustifiable standpoint and talking over the other contributors makes the scoutcast a poorer view imo.

Get some community members on there. Every few weeks have a community regular guest appearance. Doesn't matter who. Just shake things up a bit.

IMO Jonty shows classic passive aggressive tendancies on the scoutcast and on the forums. You can't throw in veiled digs at fellow FPL players (like he did infamously last season, when belittling an FFS poster's season history) and cover it up with a flash of admittedly super white straight teeth and get away with it. Not in my eyes anyway.

                  Resurrect the community lads.

Get Applebonkers back on for a guest appearance.

Or invite guys that know their stuff. (Jonty does know his stuff ofc, great FPL player but is stiffling the format imo)

Numb, Back on the Horse, Torres Magic, Triggerlips, Ville Ronka ( have you reached out to try and find him lol) Zan Keroski, Hooky, Spectrum, Jay Eg (he was great on his one off appearance) Ruth NZ etc.. All great FPL managers who I'm sure could contribute to a scoutcast brilliantly if given an invitation and were willing to come on, on a once off basis just to shake it up a bit.

Or regular contributors that may not have the HOF ranking but could contribute to a scoutcast making it more relevant to the newer members that might recognize a mate from the boards. EG Jafooli, Optimus, FPL virg, Bemba.

                  Peace.

Even Mark looks worn out by it all. Andy and AZ dive for shelter while seemingly waiting for the storm to pass, before Mark encourages them with a few encouraging tit bits.

Maybe the Scouts have lost a bit of enthusiasm for FPL. I mean, if they do something different they get slaughtered for it. But when you have a blank GW and you're fielding less than 11 players, and you can't back yourself to bring in a player that might break even, it's pretty depressing. Where's the fun gone?

...agree with you and RCA, I always watch the scoutcast and love Jonty's humour but I must say that this week's one made me tired by their depressing outlook on GW30 & 31. Az and Andy had little to no input and the lack of alternative ideas from all was a bit frustrating. Hope it was just a blip and the fun returns!

I thought it was a great scoutcast and i really enjoyed the discussion on the bps system chips and gw31.

Jonty is going to play conservatively that is just his style but Andy who has a more reckless style did advocate taking a hit if i remember correctly so there was another point of view on how to play it.

I would also love to see some of the community on the show from time to time some of the names you mentioned would be great.

If RuthNZ made an appearance on the show it would be box office i would gladly pay for view to see that.

well ...stats is something you can rely on with data. in some ways reduces to risk on the punts you wanna take. take me for example i go by my gut.... went from 100k to 500k in 4 awful gws.

I'm a gut player. Always have been. Stats bore me. That's just me though. For those that like digging into the numbers some do it well and some don't. You can skillfuly and objectively interpret data or you can poorly interpret data and get useless information that's no better than guessing

I think I’m going to make an early transfer for Sterling > Mahrez
I can take another drop on Sterling but Mahrez rising is just putting extra strain on getting a decent team for DGWs without my WC

You will loose even more value getting sterling back on that wc..

                    Hey OB

I brought Mahrez in 2 GW's ago for this nice run of fixtures and DGW34 as I've used my 2nd WC already. I also brought in Eriksen at the same time with 2 x FT's.

I kind of expected a little more returns from them. Ok, Mahrez scored in the 96th minute or something ridiculous and I'd be considering it a disaster if he hadn't. Heaven knows how Vardy owners much be feeling.

Although Leicester blank in GW31, they are playing Chelsea in the FA Cup, so just be mindful of that if you're thinking of bringing in Mahrez this week. Maybe last week was the ideal time and now leave it until GW32?

Vardy has scored in 3 of the last 5 .. not to bad imo

4 in his last 6, or none in his last 2.... stats eh? 😉

He seems to like playing against West Brom, so could be a good pick this week.

Every now and then strikersstriker blank to in a row.. but I agree Leicester have not been impressive, and the he should feel lucky for scoring that amount as it is not a fair reflection of how he (and leicester) has played

                  For a hit.
Dunk and sterling for schindler and siggy.
                  Hope it works before wc32.

No. Hudd don't keep CS I think Palace will score in 31 and Sterling could play. Everton are junk

Some great ideas and some not so great in RedLightning's HT on what changes we would like to see in next seasons game.
I liked some of the ideas i seen here it gives us some good food for thought anyway.

A revamp next seaon would be cool. The chips on the Norwegian version seem far more exciting!

They were mentioned on the scoutcast this week. From memory but I might be slightly off:
One was a Double captaincy chip where both you C & VC get double points in a GW.
Another was where are all of your strikers get double points in a given GW.
I think another was that your whole defence gets double points in a given GW.

They sound interesting and i have played with the idea of different types of chips at times myself but i have come to the conclusion that i just want to see the chips removed from the game except for the two wildcards.

Same.. calls for to much tinkering and time to think of the endless possilities.. lucky punts also gets a too high reward, and one-week players keep winning the weekly prizes by playing TC or BB week in week out.. so annoying

I don't like the BB chip at all, one season is fine as a novelty but it has gotten very boring! No chips and just keep the two wilcards like you say is probably best or mix it up by changing chips like the Norwegian ones every season.

Some analysis on van La Parra's playing time:

                    - Started 20 / 26 games he was eligible for (he got sent off in GW 13 so he missed the next 3 games)

                    - Was subbed in 5 times:

GW 1 - cry for Mounie at 86'
GW 5 - LEI for Depoitre at 92'
GW 6 - bur for Sabiri at 63'
GW 9 - MUN for Kachunga at 39'
GW 25 - LIV for Mooy at 79'

                    - Was an unused sub only once, vs Chelsea (H) in GW 16 - this game came right after his ban ended.

                    - In the 20 games he started, he was subbed off 9 times, with only one of those being due to injury. In games that he has started (bar the game he was subbed off in due to injury), he's averaged 80 minutes of playing time. In GWs 2, 3, 11, 18, 19, 20, 26 he was subbed off close to the hour mark for tactical reasons. In the 12 games he's featured in since coming back from his suspension, he's only been subbed off early three times.

I think he's pretty nailed on even if Kachunga is back, though I'm not sure who would drop out the first 11 if Wagner wanted to start Kachunga.

Thanks, he's an option but if Mooy is back he could be the one for 31. Prichard maybe. But tbh I might go without either of them on FH. Thinking one of GK, Schindler or Zanka perhaps. But I do fancy Palace I that one, especially if Zaha is fit for it!

I'm going with VLP because it allows me to bring in Coleman for Mee this GW. Also, Huddersfield very rarely keep a CS so I'm not sure if I'd even bother bringing in their defenders on a FH.

Thinking about it, you are right, they won't keep a CS v Palace imo. Zanka has some goal threat from stats but not worth it I reckon.
