In the run-up to the start of the Eliteserien season, I sent a few questions to promoted side Bodø/Glimt’s front man, Kristian Fardal Opseth. Here’s what he had to say ahead of his side’s first top flight game this weekend.

Which players are you most looking forward to facing this season?
I look forward to meeting Bismar Acosta from Brann. It will be a tough match between us, that’s fun.

Who do you think will challenge Rosenborg for the title?
Nobody. They are well settled.

How far up the table do you think Glimt can finish?
Our ambitions are to end on the upper half of the table. That’s our goal.

Do you feel you have unfinished business in Eliteserien after your time with Sogndal?
Yes, I do. I want to show myself. I have more confidence from Bodø/Glimt, and are allowed to show what I am made off.

Do you play Fantasy Football?
I always start with a team, but then I quit. I am such a bad loser.

Which Glimt players should fantasy managers keep an eye on?
Ulrik Saltnes and Amor Layouni can be a surprise. Also Martin Bjørnbak.

What have you been up to during the off-season? Holiday?
I went to Thailand and to Hamburg. In Hamburg I watched the World Championship in handball. Then I spent Christmas and New Years with my family.

Where’s the place to be on a Friday night in Bodo?
At home on the couch. (He said laughing). I actually don’t know. Maybe Hundholmen? I rarely go out.

Weekly summary

This is just my thoughts and observations after the first gameweek, please feel free to correct me as I'm likely wrong at points and to add to the discussion with your own observations 😀

Bonus points:
Last season we saw a few players that always seemed to mop up bonus even when not contributing much to the game from an FPL perspective, due to the man in the stand system. This was a useful little redemptive tool for several players, and on the hunt for more this season, after a bonus point in a 2-1 loss, could Kitolano be one after being a bonus point despite conceding twice? Another possible candidate for bonus magnet is Ejuke from Valerenga, collecting two bonus despite no attacking contributions.

Promoted teams:
Bodo/Glimt and IK got off to a flying Start (sorry for the pun, couldn't help myself) beating their teams 3-1 and 4-1 respectively, with BG's performance a more noteworthy achievement as Lillestrom are being tipped to be one of the better performing teams this season. Attacking options look plentiful in both sides, with several budget mids (Kabran, Sigurdarson, Saltnes) and forwards (Opseth, Floki) to pick from. Whilst BG have not much of a platform to build from in terms of fixtures, some returns look inevitable, and IK Start have a DGW in the works soon which should further boost their prospects as picks.

Bendtner alternatives (A knee jerk):
The season opened with several striker options for many teams getting decent hauls, but unfortunately for patrons of the Lord, he was not one as RBK blanked playing a tough S08. This could be the sign that those willing to go without Bendtner have been hoping for; he could be replaceable yet.

  Nice summary. I'll put in my 2 pence:
  
  1) bonus points: You may well be right, and it is probable you'll find those players likely to get bonus no matter what, but one GW is not enough to point out Kitolano and Ejuke. As I actually watched the games, both really looked rather good out there despite the actuall end results. Of the two, Kitolano is more likely to be one of those bonus magnets, as he was letting in a few crosses from his side.
  
  2) Yes, both teams looked good for that first match, I'd like to see more of Start though, as Tromsø looked like they are back to their early season form from last year. Watchlist is rife with yellow players.
  
  3) The striker bonanza in GW1 was insane, and quite a few out there who like a bit of jam on their bread with their spissrush payday. I'd still look to Bendtner as a big man over the season.

  Nice. Ejuke looked good to be fair. Only saw highlights from Odd, but Kitolano also promising.
  
  Perhaps worth considering shots/shots on target - https://www.sofascore.com/tournament/football/norway/eliteserien/20 (scroll down). Early days but some ratios will be more sustainable than others. e.g.
  
  Pedersen 9 shots, 5 on target, 2G
  Amang 5 shots, 3 on target, 1G
  Finnbogason 3 shots, 1 on target, 1G (1 key pass, 1A)
  Kabran 2 shots, 1 on target, 1G (2 big chances created, 1 missed, 5 key passes, 1A)
  Opseth 2 shots, 2 on target, 2G
  
  Fingers crossed on my Bendtner cap this week.

    Good luck with Bendtner 🙂 RBK could easily let loose against KBK this week, which is why I've got (H)elland. Those are some great stats on Amang, be nice to see if he can keep his spot as an owner.

  Will Pedersen start ahead of Mos, or will they play together? This is one of the reasons why I didn't include him in my team from GW 1. If he plays 90 minutes every time, I might have to reconsider.
  
  Midfield is the big question for me. Start could be a go-to, as well as Molde, but you want players starting every game.
  
  Bendtner look likely to be my captain this week also, but triple Rosenborg might not have been the best idea. Might have to think of alternatives if points doesn't come. There's also the prize issue.
  
  What are the best alternatives in the 7.0 striker category, by the way?

    In my opinion Amang looks like a great option at 6.5 if he can stay first choice. I feel like Stokke could redeem himself as an option as well, although maybe not straight away. Floki maybe after next weeks blank.

    We could see Strømsgodset field both strikers, but for now I think they will stick with one up front. It's Pedersen's place to lose for now, but a few bad games and Mos will be given the chance. Pedersen is one to watch though, probably the standout performer of this gameweek. Could easily had more points and were unplayable at times.

    If you can find 0.5m you could double up on Brann with Haugen. Otherwise shifting to Nguen seems pretty safe and would free up 2.5m. Also look at Hestad, Zachariassen or Kabran/Sigurdarson if you can deal with Start's blank.
    
    Re: Godset - Pellegrino to come straight in on the left? Or could we see two up top with Mos and Pedersen?

      I started the season with 1.0 ITB so I could get Haugen for one of my Strømsgodset mids if needed. Very likely to be my move.
      
      Remains to be seen. They could change formation and field both strikers up front, or stick with 4-2-3-1 and put Pellegrino out wide.

I've put myself in a difficult position. Already went ahead with a transfer this morning, and was prepared to do a -4 if Stokke was ruled out. With a bench full of blank players, and Ulland Andersen now confirmed out, I need to rethink.

1.) -4 to get Ulland Andersen out for a player for 9.5 or less, and hope Stokke plays.
2.) -4 to get Stokke out, and just deal with a Ulland Andersen 0 point.
3.) -8 to get both Stokke and Ulland Andersen out - possibly for a Brann double-up.

Thoughts?

  We don't know the algorithm for it, but last season had observations that about 2000 transfers was minimum for movement. Probably some ownership-elements in there too, but right now the most transferred in and out is only at 1500, so my guess is we are close on quite a few, Including Ulland Andersen out, Marcus Pedersen and Kristoffer Zachariassen in.

      The commentators were pushing for a national team call-up for him, he was the outstanding player in the game.
      
      He had a great break-through season last season as well, but was sort of outshined by Diatta at the time. We really should have had a note on him in the Returning Options section, slight oversight that....

Am I crazy now thinking about taking a -8? Could do Stokke to Skålevik, Lehne Olsen or Brustad.
Leaning towards not doing this, but with a blanking bench, and if Stokke looks unlikely to play (providing we get news about this), it could be an option to consider.

    If Stokke doesn't get minutes, I would have to take a -8 the get a full startung eleven, yes. That would of course give me the oportunity to double up on Brann or Molde.
    
    Either way, the player I bring in would need to be a long term option. A bit of a gamble though.

One thing I can tell from experience is that team value really did not matter at all last year. I did not take any hits all season, I missed that 0.5 price rise of Ohi, but I was still able to build any team I want towards the end of the season. I remember having 3-4 million ITB even with Bendtner in my team. I do not think you have to worry about price rises and take hits for that reason.

    Still agree that hits/price rises aren't as effective in this game, but I think this year will definitely be harder.
    
    Towards the end of last season, building a team was easy due to lots of well performing, nailed, cheap options like Gjertsen, Lehne Olsen, Åsen, Wangberg, Diatta, Stokke all below 6.5m. McDermott was a starting keeper for 4m, Ohi was great value all year. All more expensive this season.
    
    Add that to the fact the premium options from RBK are more expensive and it could be difficult to shuffle your team, especially if like me you're starting without Bendtner but want to get him in later.

      Took 2 hits last season. Paid off nicely in the SGW, but completely failed in the 2nd DGW… Planning to take 2-3 more this season due to more accurate pricing. Last year at the end I had ca. 4.0 ITB; with my cheap players (exactly the same you mentioned) scoring well above the average.

(although tried this analysis last season and predicting proved an utter fail)
