Chelsea are knocked out of the Champions League, as expected, but their performance in Barcelona is a reminder that their key players still have much to give as the season nears its completion.

The 3-0 scoreline flattered Barca as individual errors – in particular from goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois – scuppered an otherwise excellent team showing by the Blues, who out-shot their opponents 14-8.

Coach Antonio Conte made two changes from the side that beat Crystal Palace at the weekend, with Antonio Rudiger and Victor Moses replacing Gary Cahill and Davide Zappacosta.

That meant a second straight start up front for Olivier Giroud at the expense of Alvaro Morata, who only replaced him after 67 minutes last night, which in turn could be a significant development if the 1.5%-owned Frenchman retains his place for Chelsea’s domestic run-in.

Giroud’s inclusion has brought a genuine balance to the attack, freeing up Eden Hazard and, in particular, Willian.

The Brazilian was again excellent at the Nou Camp, firing in two shots and causing the home defence all manner of issues with his direct running.

Hazard was more subdued, but still managed three attempts and produced two key passes as Chelsea offered a consistent threat throughout the match despite going a goal down in just the third minute.

The most likely Chelsea player to score on the night, however, was Marcos Alonso.

The wing-back hit the post with a free-kick, one of a match-high four shots he had in an eye-catching attacking performance.

Blues defenders have been consistently sold by Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers during a six-Gameweek spell in which they’ve kept just one clean sheet.

Alonso has been no exception – he’s lost around 400,000 owners in that time frame – but his offensive threat remains undeniable, and it would be a surprise if he is not part of many Wildcard plans despite his budget-busting 7.2 price tag.

Short-term, there is little Fantasy interest in any of Conte’s players, however.

They have a blank Gameweek 31 as they’ll face Leicester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals and follow that up with a huge home match against Spurs once the international break is done.

After that, though, their assets should return to our radars.

If Chelsea get past the Foxes and into the cup semi-finals, they’ll have two double Gameweeks to come.

The first, likely to be in Gameweek 34, would involve trips to Southampton and Burnley, while the second would probably feature home matches with Liverpool and Huddersfield in Gameweek 37.

Fixtures at home to West Ham and away at Swansea City and Newcastle round out their generally attractive league schedule.

On paper, Chelsea’s form – they’ve lost three of their last four matches in all competitions – doesn’t warrant investment in their players.

But the defeats came against both Manchester sides and Barca, all away from home, and last night’s performance was as positive a showing as a 3-0 defeat can be.

The defence remains a concern and Hazard’s 10.6 price means he can’t afford too many more off days – he’s served up consecutive blanks in the league – if he is to find a way into our Wildcard midfields.

Willian (7.0), however, offers value and fine form, while Alonso has the potential to deliver returns at both ends of the pitch – since returning from a two-match absence in Gameweek 28, only the Brazilian and Giroud have fired in more attempts than the wing-back’s six.

And if he continues to be handed starts by Conte, Giroud could be an interesting differential option up front, particularly as Harry Kane and Sergio Aguero are currently injured, and the latter is likely to be a rotation risk when Man City finally wrap up the league title and can concentrate fully on their Champions League ambitions.

    Current team:

    Pickford
    Daniels Robertson
    Salah Pritchard Shaquiri
    Wilson Firmino

Thoughts on these options would be greatly appreciated:

    A) Stanislas, zaha (-4)
    B) stanislas, Mounie (-4)
    C) get all 3 for a -8

    Thanks all

Here are the X Men (as in 10) for GW31. Decided to punt on a couple of hits to maximise chance of points. Hoping they don't end up being the 10 Plagues. I think the best part about pressing "Confirm team" was seeing I had £10.3m itb 😉

    Simple one...

Better to have a Huddersfield attacker or a palace one?
Have Schindler for Hud and still tempted to go pva as palace cover.
    Neither is an option!

I can get this team for GW32 for a hit:

    Pope
    Alonso VVD Dawson (Coleman)
    Salah Mkhi Son Stanislas (Shaqiri)
    Auba Firmino King

Given this, would it be better to save my WC for GW33 or just play it in GW32 to avoid the hit?

I think with that team you COULD leave the WC one week, but not sure what you would gain. Although it's true that sometimes one week of information is a lot of useful information.

Yeah it's tough, the way I see it:

        WC in GW32:
        - Get rid of the dross.
        - Avoid taking a -4 hit.
        - Get 2FT before GW34 which may be useful in getting Kane back (this may sway it for me).

        WC in GW33:
        - Alot of extra information.
        - Get to keep Liverpool players and don't have to jump on Spurs and Chelsea.

Attack wise - triple Bournemouth or diversify/just get two?
Mounie versus King in particular is a tricky one.

      I'm struggling with this too.

Have PVA and actually fancy a CPL cleanie so might sway me away from Mounie.

Thinking King or even A Smith due to OOP and form.

Thanks Over. Essentially I'm trying to work out what move is most/least worth it...
        Kane to Mounie/King
        Ogbonna to PVA
        Elliott to Butland
        Mahrez to Stanislas
        Kenny to Baines

I'm okay with -4/-8, but -12 is too much!

Stanislas is the top pick due to fixture and form.

All are good moves really.. Baines is also excellent due to his high ceiling.

How many FTs do you have?

It's exactly what I am thinking about. WBA could get trashed, but if Hudd score, it'll probably be Mounie.

If Walcott is not fit, I'm getting both (Stan, King, Mounie for -8).

    3. JasonG123
      • 12 Years
      7 years, 8 months ago

For me I'm getting King provided he is confirmed fit because:
      - The expected scores of King and Mounie are very close.
      - King may be on penalties now, and has a better (and home) fixture.
      - It allows additional flexibility since he has a good GW32 fixture so could potentially hold the WC to GW33 (this is the main reason in truth so may not apply to you).

But I may waver if we don't get a clear indication of King's likelihood of starting.

      1. JasonG123

I will also have Stanislas and Wilson, so it's the triple up for me.

Enjoyed your hot topic yesterday 🙂

On similar lines, i was all set on just going with 9 players this week for no hit. But Josh King (if confirmed fit) in for Kane for -4 is tempting me now, partly as i'm gaining a player over a blanker, but also as it could protect 0.1 value on kane dropping again.

        What do you reckon?

        1. JasonG123
          • 12 Years
          7 years, 8 months ago

Applying my analysis from yesterday to King:

          - 2 points for playing.
          - King is averaging 0.2 xG this season and gets 4 points for a goal, so his expected returns from scoring is 0.8.
          - King is averaging 0.2 xA this season and gets 3 points for every assist, so his expected returns from assisting is 0.6.
          - Expected returns from bonus points are 0.25, based on 5 bonus points in 1800 minutes.
          - 10% chance of a YC (based on 2 YCs this season in 1800 minutes), so minus 0.1.

          Adding that together is: 2+ 0.8 + 0.6 + 0.25 - 0.1 = 3.55

BUT note that these are just averages and don't take into account the fact that he's playing WBA and he's been in better form recently so I think his projected xG and xA for this week would be higher (is there any where I can get betting odds for him scoring and assisting???). So bearing that in mind I'm going for it.

            Brilliant, thanks Jason, much appreciated.

Anytime goalscorer on William hill has him at 5-1 currently. I think the WBA factor definately raises his attractiveness. His dropoff from last season to this has been remarkable though. I think the arrival of Defoe really didn't help him. Now wilson is playing he seems to be performing a little better.

            1. JasonG123
              • 12 Years
              7 years, 8 months ago

Hmm so that is exactly the same as his xG over the season - perhaps then he is not worth the hit.

As I mentioned yesterday, where the decision is close (as with both Butland and King), there is more scope to use your own discretion.

The defence will need playing round with a little.

Yep I noticed you had Chilwell. My reply was for the fella above as he stated he wouldn't want a Leicester defender.

Only just seeing this. No clean sheets in 6 is the number 1 reason. As season comes to a close they won't have much to play for either, and if anything more likely to throw caution to wind. They're not a really bad pick though, just I don't want one!

    On -4 with 10/11 for GW31

    Butland
    Robertson, Bauer, Baines, PVA
    Salah, Shaquiri, Milli,
    Firmino, Wilson

    (Pope, Erikson, Sterling, Aguero, Alonso)

No WC so need to have a minimal damage plan for GW34.

It’s going to be tough going into GW32 with WC. That’s why I’m rolling my FT to have 2 afterwards.

    On a -4 already.

Kenny > Baines worth a further -4? ...Kenny hasn't even made the bench last 2 gw's?

    *****
    Robertson - Keane - Kenny
    Salah(c) - Walcott - Richarlison - Zaha - Mili
    Firmin - King

Bench: Elliot, Lloris, Maguire, Smalling, Vardy

I'm considering the same, it's basically a 2 point punt on CS or attacking returns. Given the fact he is on set pieces and probably pens, could be worth a try.

Stoke everton could easily be 0-0, I wouldnt factor in that you got walcott. Butland also gets alot of saves and in bonus contention if they keep a cleanie

Nah, it means you will still get some points if Walcott fails to deliver

wouldn't bother with a hit for a keeper personally

especially not butland (as mentioned above) given you have coleman and walcott in your team

If you had/have no WC would you:

    A) roll your FT this week giving you 2 FTs for GW32 and play 10 this week or
    B) use your FT to bring in Baines/Coleman

    I’m currently on A

    1. Adam West - Team Serbia for…

Roll . 10 is well above average

That’s my thinking too. Just worried that Baines/Coleman could punish me....

Does Kane's red flag stop his price from dropping further now? Or is it likely we will see it drop again before the weekend?

I thought about it,well actualy Martina to Baines...
But Stoke will probably score so you would need some attacking returns
Im just hoping Martina will come in 90th min for Wally after his 2 goals ,for BFS to steal some time and save the 2-1 lead

This for -4 would get me 9 players for GW31 (assuming Kenny plays no part).

    Elliot > Butland
    De Bruyne > Stanislas
    Sterling > Walcott

    Butland
    van Dijk, Kenny*
    Salah(c), Walcott, Stanislas, Shaqiri, Pritchard
    Firmino, Wilson

    GTG?
