Scout Notes – Arsenal March On

Arsenal book their place in the Europa League quarter-finals with a 5-1 aggregate win over AC Milan as their stars now go into Fantasy storage until the start of next month.

Danny Welbeck, with a brace, and Granit Xhaka scored the goals in a 3-1 win at the Emirates that had more than a hint of good fortune about it.

The Gunners went behind just after the half-hour mark, but the visitors’ lead lasted a mere four minutes when Welbeck was supposedly fouled in the penalty area and he picked himself up to dispatch the resultant spot-kick.

It was, by any and all standards, a terrible decision by the match officials and knocked much of the stuffing out of the Milan side.

A goalkeeping error allowed Xhaka’s long-range effort to find its way into the net after the break before Welbeck sealed the deal late on with a header from an Aaron Ramsey rebound.

With no FA Cup action and a Gameweek 31 blank this weekend, Arsenal won’t play again until the visit of Stoke City on April 1, giving us plenty of time to assess the merits of their key assets for what is a very favourable domestic run-in.

A trip to Man United in Gameweek 36 will be tough, but the rest of the fixtures are eminently winnable for a side that has regained some form and confidence after a run of four defeats in all competitions.

Following the Stoke match, the Gunners will entertain Southampton before a probable double Gameweek 34 involving trips to Newcastle and Leicester City.

That will be their only double, although the subsequent fixtures (WHU mun BUR hud) still offer the prospect of decent returns and could play a part in our Gameweek 32 Wildcards.

The issue for Fantasy managers is gauging the extent of Arsene Wenger’s rotation to maximise their chances of winning the Europa League – their only route into qualifying for next season’s Champions League.

There were only four survivors from the side that started the 3-0 win over Watford last Sunday – Shkodran Mustafi, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Mesut Ozil and Xhaka.

One change was enforced, as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang remains ineligible for the Europa League. At the back, however, Wenger essentially played his first-choice defence – both Nacho Monreal and Hector Bellerin were passed fit to return, while Laurent Koscielny – rested against the Hornets along with Ramsey – was also named on the teamsheet.

The French centre-half was then forced off with a back problem, although Wenger played down the severity of the problem post-match.

“He got a kick on his back. We don’t think it’s bad, but he cramped up and he couldn’t go on.”

Those home matches with Stoke, Southampton, West Ham and Burnley might tempt some into considering an Arsenal defender for their Wildcard and Gameweek 35 Free Hit teams.

But the Gunners’ clean sheet against Watford was their first in the league since Gameweek 18 and, having rode their luck in the first leg with Milan, the backline was not wholly convincing last night either.

It is further up the field where Fantasy interest in their assets lies, with Aubameyang the strongest candidate as we shop for replacements for Harry Kane and Sergio Aguero.

He has three goals and an assist from his five league starts and while Wenger is highly likely to shuffle his pack for the Europa League quarter-finals on April 5 and 12, the striker cannot be saved for Europe.

The first leg of the tie is sandwiched between the home matches with Stoke and Southampton – ideal fixtures, you would think, for Wenger to rest key players.

The conclusion of the quarter-final comes between the Saints match-up and a trip to Newcastle. Again, that should allow the manager plenty of scope to field a weaker league team without necessarily jeopardising the result.

Should Arsenal make it to the Europa League semi-finals, the two legs will be played on April 26 and May 3, with the trip to Old Trafford coming in between, which suggests the home matches with West Ham and Burnley either side of that could be rotation hot spots.

Mkhitaryan (7.7) went into last night’s match with back-to-back goals to his name, while Ramsey (6.9) also scored in the first leg of the tie. However, the latter has now been rested in back-to-back league matches as Wenger looks to preserve his fitness.

Meanwhile, Ozil (9.3) had produced three assists across his previous two starts in all competitions but was subdued last night.

How Wenger sets up his side for the Stoke match in Gameweek 32 may tell us a lot more about his rotation plans for the Europa League.

The Champions League picture

The quarter-final draw for both European competitions takes place later this morning, with Man City and Liverpool the sole English survivors in the Champions League.

Their ties will take place on April 3/4 and 10/11, while the semi-finals follow on April 24/25 and May 1 and 2.

City have the small matter of a Manchester derby and a trip to Spurs to deal with after each leg of the quarter-finals, so any European rotation is likely to occur in the match before the first leg – Gameweek 32’s trip to Everton.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have a Merseyside derby at Goodison Park sandwiched between their European duties, so the matches either side – at Crystal Palace in Gameweek 32 and home to Bournemouth in Gameweek 34 – would appear to be the obvious opportunities for Jurgen Klopp to rest key players.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Season Run In: Man Utd v Arsenal Players

A key issue those wildcarding/preparing for future doubles have encountered is Man Utd v Arsenal assets.

Many can't afford both Lukaku and Aubameyang. Which do you prefer for the season run in and doubles?

At the back De Gea looks good, but is it better to invest money in one of Arsenal's goal scoring defenders?

And what of midfield are there any Arsenal assets we can rely on to be rotation free? Are there any Man Utd midfielders to consider?

This could be the major divide among wildcarders. Those with a heavy frontline inc Lukaku AND Aub...and those with a strong midfield.

why not both? if its down to just mids and forwards,
i have Vardy-Aub & firmino up front with Mihk,Mahrez,Salah and hazard in midfield.

I would avoid man united right now they are not playing well and jose keeps changing things up to accommodate sanchez who is out of form. Arsenal have better fixtures in particular home matches and have less rotation risks by that i mean players playing in their best positions

I'll be having ddg auba and lukaku on wildcard for sure

Mhki is an option in a 5 man best midfield.

Aubameyang seems very likely to be in my GW32 wildcard but I haven't attempted to piece anything together yet - that's next week's fun!

One decision I need to make now though; I have to decide whether to ditch Mkhitaryan or Sterling for a BGW midfielder and have value in both (albeit only 0.1 in Mkhi).

I like Mkhitaryan a lot and would be happy to have him in my wildcard team so it would be mildly annoying to buy back at an extra 0.1. Ditching Sterling feels even weirder though. Decisions, decisions...

Atm going Auba over Lukaku and holding Firmino.
Want DDG but torn over whether too expensive if I'm getting a decent 2nd keeper for DGW BB. Not sure I want to have to use an FT for a keeper just for DGW.
      Monreal seems a decent option.
But am going without Alonso. With DGWs rather use money on two good defenders (Bavies & Monreal) rather than Alonso and a 4.2m duffer. Gamble on his form being like GW3-17 rather than 18-23/24.

Firstly, my view on WC defense should be 2 premium and 3 budget options( due to the health of budget options available) + DDG&Fab GK's.

      Having said that:
Double up Man Utd def: DDG,Valencia looks pretty good

Arsenal: Only really looking at Auba due to Europa Commitments and serious rotation.

Will be similar position to Man city if they win the League vs Utd I assume, full rotation prior to the UCL mid week matches. although more happy to risk a city mid than an arsenal mid.
UTD attackers I think can wait until I see some convincing 3-0 etc. results (last one GW23)

Auba/Firmino for me with maybe Rotation to Lukaku in GW34

De Gea the only United asset i'm interested in. Attackers are too unreliable with Mourinho's approach to games. Aubameyang the only nailed Arsenal player with Europe being the priority. Would like Monreal but I think he'll get rotated.

Aubemyang and Lukaku, De Gea and Monreal. Pack the defence with cheaper options from doubling teams (hello, Swansea & Leicester), go for a cheap 3rd striker, and utilise the £8.xm Star midfielders like Mahrez, Son and David Silva. Simples.

      De Gea
      Mustafi/Monreal

I'm thinking utd defensive assets and arsenal attacking assets.

Let's face it, we wouldnt even consider utd attacking assets if there was no double in 34. There are 6 other fixtures around the double that is far more important. Getting Lukaku is simply throwing away 2m.

Arsenal are awful away, so I don't think their double in 34 is the best. They however have 2 very nice fixtures before that. Looking at Aubameyang and ramsey/mikhi double up.

Without Kane in mix for first dgw auba+lukaku looks fine. Then can replace auba with Kane after city match.
Rest ars players will rotate as europa is their only way to et championsleague. So best get de gea lukaku auba from manutd+ars. Rest you can balance by picking cheap but equally good options like son over eriksen, willian over hazard, gross over arnie

Would really like Mounie for a -4 hit, but that would mean taking out Quaner - who is my third Huddersfield player, going into this GW.

Will have to look at Tosun, Sørloth, Benteke or someone like that for that third striker spot.

Right thoughts on my FH chip please? Not sure to start Shaq or Stani?

    Butland
    Baines - Coleman - PVA
    Salah(C) - Stanislas - Zaha - Mane
    Mounie - Firmino(VC) - Benteke

    Lossi - Shaq - Alex - Dawson

I have Schindler (for Coleman) Wilson & King, but otherwise the same 11.

      Issues I see
      -Will Benteke start?
      - Hudds blanked in 5 of the last 7 and Mounie seems to go on barren runs, will he even start ?
      - consider 4 different players in defence / keeper means you shorten the odds on getting a clean sheet (higher floor)

Was playing about with a wc 32 team and got this 1.4 mill short tho ☹️

    Ddg Fab

    Alonso Valencia Davies Lascelles Fernandez

    Salah Mahrez Silva Son William

    Auba Vardy Barnes

I guess Valencia to Smalling or Auba to Firmino could work

    A) Mane & Wilson/Benteke/Mounie

Save it for gw35, or even a dgw.

      • Ajax Hamsterdam

        6 years, 1 month ago

better option in gw35. not a great pool of player to choose from. 35 will have city arsenal and liverpool player to choose from

        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

so that you can plan your WC solely around DGW players and then not worry about the blank in the gw following. and that in the blank following you’ll have a better choice of players so can choose more ‘guaranteed’ return

that’s the theory. could work out better to do it this week, only time will tell

Think I'm going to continue to ignore Shaqiri. He's been a pain to not own over the last month or so but this is the last week it will be the case.

At least it can't be as bad as not owning Josh King last season, he was a nightmare for about 4 months.

This is the problem - any goal alerts will inevitably have me fearing the worst as he's the only one who seems to do anything in that team. History tells me that he's a poor FPL option but I'm not going to be comfortable going without when I know he's so well owned and how terrible Everton are away from home.
