Welcome to the latest in a series of regular Rate My Wildcard Team articles that will be published at key points during the season when Fantasy Premier League managers are most likely to consider using this chip.

This article showcases my thoughts on my current wildcard team to get the discussion started. Hopefully some of the issues I’m facing will be familiar to others currently wildcarding.

My wildcard team is based on deploying a Bench Boost chip in double Gameweek 34, Free Hit chip in the following week’s limited set of matches, and then the Triple Captain chip in Gameweek 37, when further double fixtures look highly likely.

With my chip strategy in mind there is a lot to juggle.

I need to ensure I can put out as many players with two fixtures as possible for Gameweek 34’s bench boost, ensure I have a credible XI for Gameweek 37’s double fixtures and make sure I can afford to bring in Harry Kane later in the season within two moves. Thankfully I still have my Free Hit chip which takes out the problem of key double fixture assets missing Gameweek 35.

Feel free to use this article thread to put forward your wildcard teams and to help others with their wildcard related issues. Perhaps it may be useful when submitting your wildcard team to let the community know what your chip strategy is as well.

Jonty’s Wildcard Team

Key issues

  • My current draft locks in a move ahead of Gameweek 34. Arsenal striker Pierre- Emerick Aubameyang’s Gameweek 32 and 33 fixtures look too good, plus he is nailed on to start due to being cup tied for the Gunners’ Europa exploits. I’m looking to move him to Jamie Vardy in Gameweek 34, but should I just get the Leicester man in now and avoid locking myself into a transfer too early?
  • Firmino has gone from my team and his hefty profit cashed in. I feel he may be prone to some rotation around Liverpool’s Champions League clashes with Manchester City. In addition, the lure of double Gameweek players looks too strong. Are Firmino owners wrong to jettison him ahead of still strong fixtures for the Reds and with his excellent form in mind?
  • Burnley and Brighton look ideal enablers for my chip strategy. But have I picked the right ones? What I like about Brighton’s Pascal Gross is that he can be downgraded to a cheaper midfielder to allow the slot currently occupied by Aubameyang to become Kane. Downgrading Seagulls striker Glenn Murray is less easy with limited ultra-cheap strikers.
  • I’ve taken a punt on Cedric Soares from Southampton. He offers the slight chance of attacking returns. But should I go for Jack Stephens instead?
  • Is Marcos Alonso too expensive? Or is the Chelsea left-back’s explosive potential and all round points scoring ability worth the cash?
  • Is Willian actually nailed on. All Chelsea fans, football fans and Fantasy managers view him as a great asset but will Conte continue to start him over the season run in?
  • Is Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku really worth having, with just one double digit points haul since Gameweek 5?

Would love feedback. 0.1 ITB right now.

    DDG / McCarthy
Alonso / Christensen / Morgan / Lowton / Simon Francis
    Willian / Mahrez / Son / Salah / Hojbjerg
    Lukaku / Barnes / Vardy

On WC this week, going for all DGW34 for BB. Have FH for GW35 and TC for 37.

I would be concerned about Francis - limped off early last GW (was in my team). If you downgrade Morgan, you can have your pick of 4.5m defenders (and they all have better fixtures than Bournemouth, even without a DGW!)

I am also concerned there. Who's more nailed-on if I downgrade Morgan -- Simpson or Chilwell?

Who would you take at 4.5?
        a) Tarkowski
        b) Dunk
        c) Stephens
        d) someone else?

Simpson seeing as he's first choice and the deputy is injured.
From that list, dunk = 2 doubles

Chilwell (look at minutes played when available - he's first choice LB and also plays far more forward).

Of those, Tarkowski. But don't be afraid to look at non-DGW players

I think Simpson is more likely to play both, yes? What's the reason for Tarkowski vs Dunk, and what's the argument for someone not on DGW if I'm going to BB?

I think both Simpson and chilwell play both

I think Burnley are better at the back than BHA, hence Tark over Dunk

I think a DGW for a budget defender can be something of a red herring. Could easily end up with 2 points across the two. Not sure there’s a better SGW option at 4.5, but for an extra 0.5 I think Robbo is a better option for next three weeks

I'd love an extra 0.5 ITB to get Robbo. Unfortunately, I have 0.0 ITB, unless you're suggesting another move for me to make to get it...

I agree Burnley are better and Tark over Dunk...but would you say I am better off doubling on Burnley hedging (since I already have Lowton, and I have no one on BHA)?

It would take work to get the extra cash and you’d end up with a very different team to the one you started with (which is clearly what you wanted ideally, albeit with tweaks).

And I would double up on Burnley, hell I’ve done it a few times for a SGW this season with Pope and Mee and haven’t been disappointed

Seems like Tarkowski is a better choice than Dunk. Burnley better at the back (especially at home 2x in DGW34). Also a better matchup in GW32 (wba) than Christensen (TOT) so I can get a second use out of him. Thoughts?

    De Gea - Fabianski

Current plan is TC Lukaku in GW34 and BB in GW37. Free Hit in GW35.

On wildcard, this is the team I'd like to have for gw32:

    DeGea Ryan
    Alonso Monreal Otamendi Chilwell Robertson
    Salah DSilva Mkhi Willian Mahrez
    Aubameyang Firmino Barnes

The way the double gw34 has shaped up though, will require a few hits (2 free transfers + 5 hits) for me to be
happy with my team sheet each gameweek, so I'd like your advice on which of the below players I should
include in the wildcard to avoid hits:

Tarkowski (planned to come in for Monreal just before dgw34)
    Davies/Vertonghen (...in for Otamendi after gw32 (after EVE-MCI and CHE-TOT) )
Valencia (...in for Robertson just before dgw34. Not enough money to include him yet, and plays at MCI in gw33)
Son (...in for DSilva after gw32 (after EVE-MCI and CHE-TOT) )
Gross (...in for Mkhi just before dgw34)
Lukaku (...in for Auba just before dgw34. Not enough money to include him yet, and plays at MCI in gw33)
Vardy (...in for Firmino after gw32 or 33)

You may say I could avoid hits by getting in straight Tarkowski, Davies/Vert, Son, Gross, Vardy, but I think
Monreal, Otamendi, DSilva, Mkhi, Firmino have the fixtures to reach even double digits to justify the hits
    to take them out after.

The intended dgw34 team would look like this, with 14 doublers and Salah:

    DeGea Ryan
    Alonso Tarkowski Davies Chilwell Valencia
    Salah Son Gross Willian Mahrez
    Lukaku Vardy Barnes

Sounds complicated. Maybe consider getting in a good team for GWK 34 now rather than tie yourself down to too many moves. I have similar with Aub - who I want out GWK 34 but really want GWK 32-33.

No FH so on WC have to balance week 34 double week players with players with game in 35. 3 Burnley therefore essential as only side with double 34 that play 35.

Have come up with team below. What do you think? Would transfer Auba to Lukaku for week 34 and reverse in 35. So 12 double week 34 and 8 week 35 ( perhaps take hit and get 9 or 10 out)

    De Gea Ryan
    Alonso Mustafi Robertson Lowton Morgan
    Salah Son Willian Mahrez Gudmundsson
    Aubameyang Firmino Wood

Chilwell & Fuchs compete/rotate for one spot equally
    Simpson is totally nailed.

Fuchs is hardly in the picture. Check out chilwell’s minutes. Starts as often as Simpson and pretty much plays left midfield too. No greater risk than Simpson imo

Would love some feedback on this. Don't have FH, so I'm trying to balance a decent amount of BB DGW players in 34 with a respectable side in 35. Main things I'd like advice on:

    A) Is it too risky going without any City? (for now - plan to get more in from 35)
    B) Would you rather get Son/Vardy over Gross/Lukaku?

    DDG Ryan

Is it madness to consider getting Auba on WC now and actually keeping him for GW34 if he's on form in GW32 & 33? Sure, he's got just 1 game but he may run riot vs Newcastle. The very least he could do the same damage as a weaker DGW attacker. Besides are we really sure we can trust the defender of the top clubs to actually keep clean sheets? DGWs usually mean goals, at least from what I recall.

Come to think of it, I don't even know if I want to stick with my plan for 1 premium defender, Alonso. Will he actually play all games until the end of the season, or with less and less worth fighting for, Konte will decide to switch it up and play Emerson? Why did they even buy the guy? Argh, so many questions

Yes you’re right, Auba could outscore most DGW strikers. People get obsessed with maximising DGW players.
Also Alonso is far from guaranteed either clean sheets or attacking returns; both chelsea’s defence and his attacking stats have been poor lately.

However, I don’t have a FH so I am a bit biased in favour of Auba and against Chelsea players

How about this for a wildcard side?

    DDG Ryan
    Alonso Vert Stephens Lowton Morgan
    Mahrez Son Salah Willian Gudmundsson
    Lukaku Firmino Murray

The plan is to BB 34, FT 35 and TC 37.

Maybe Auba instead of Lukaku with a view to change it for gw 34.

Definitely an interesting team. Guessing you'd be looking at BB34 with those keepers.

I'm increasingly thinking about getting a budget United mid. Lingard most likely to get attacking returns but also most likely to be rotated. Young and Matic could be a bit too defensive, but they've got two good DGWs and they're both cheap routes into the 2nd place team.

Indeed bench boost gw34 I have FH & TC to use after gw34. I see alot of teams with a weakend defence & I feel that its a waste of a bench boost but thats my opinion. I was looking @ Lingard too but the extra 1.1 million is helpful for beefing up the defence.

Yes if fit Kane will come back in Via Lukaku or Vardy possibly, I will have transfers between GW34 - 37 to plot a route back in.

If I remove Hugo Lloris for GW37 leaving me Thibaut Courtois it lets Kane back in, I could easily free up funds via Alonso, Obviously alot can happen between now & then but having high value defenders gives me cash options for funds.

Still doing it here. WC'd to get rid of my GW31 dross, and don't think BB in GW37 is wise

The more I think about BB, the more I want to spurn it, going forwards, whenever I have a nice looking XV in a normal GW - not worth damaging your WC XI for IMO

Yeah I agree. But my bench for boosting will probably be Ryan, Gross, cheap def with a decent fixture (Mariappa?), Barnes. So it's not like I'm limiting my XI massively anyway 🙂

In my case that is. I appreciate that other people's situations are different 🙂

The new fixtures are growing on me a bit. Would've much preferred Arsenal/Swansea/Newcastle to be involved but all the best TC candidates are still in GW37 and for BB I'd prefer to play it while all the teams involved have something to play for.

With Kane injured , poor spurs fixtures pre GW34, no Arsenal double in GW34 this wildcard aint gonna do for both DGW’s at all.

Just maximise it now and use points gained to take hits for the perfect GW37 Team?

    Iv no TC left ....

I’m hoping the strides I’ll make in the next 3 weeks are enough for me to win my mini leagues

Vardy stays and auba and firm swap around with lukaku and possibly kane up to gw 38 but it s all planned out 🙂

    RMWCT, 0.2m ITB.

    DDG (Ryan)
    Alonso Christensen Lowton (Morgan Cedric)
    Salah Son Mahrez Willian Stanislas
    Lukaku Auba (Barnes)

Before GW34 will do Auba to Vardy and then upgrade a defender to Valencia or Stanislas to a mid.

Hi, I’d appreciate any feedback please.

Plan is BB 34 and TC 37. I don’t have FH, so need to plan for 35.

    Approach without FH;
Rather than load up solely on DGW players I’ve had to prioritise those with the best fixtures. So I’ve ignored Chelsea, and mostly Spurs (except Son). Instead of the latter two teams I can get a few players who have a good SGW in 34 and play 35 (eg Arsenal). I’ll adjust this by 37.

I know arsenal are rubbish, but fixtures are good so I am betting on them until 35.

I’ll use FT to get two City players in for 35.

    DDG, Karnezis
    Mustafi, Duff, Dunk, Mee, Morgan
    Salah, Mahrez, Son, Mkhi, Gudmonson
    Lukaku, Auba, Barnes

    Rate my team:

    DDG/Ryan
    Alonso/Bailly/Christensen/Morgan/Lowton
    Willian/Salah/Gross/Mahrez/Son
    Vardy/Aubameyang/Barnes

1.2 ITB to upgrade Aubameyang to Lukaku for bench boost GW34.
    Have free hit for GW35.
Will drop Barnes, Lukaku and Gross for Kane (TC), Ayew and RLC/Milivojevic/Ki for GW37.

    Thoughts?
