Our series of members’ Monitor articles on Wildcard targets continues this evening with a look at Manchester United’s number one, David De Gea.

As has been the case for almost the entirety of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season, the Spaniard sits on top of the positional rankings and is the most owned goalkeeper overall.

However, despite that, De Gea has rarely featured at the summit of our Watchlist rankings until this point, with his two double Gameweeks and kind schedule now a major factor.

De Gea has accumulated 144 FPL points, six points clear of his nearest challenger (Manchester City’s Ederson), while an average of 4.8 points per match (ppm) is bettered only by Burnley’s Nick Pope (4.9ppm).

Amazingly, De Gea is now just five points short of Tom Heaton’s league-leading 149-point haul recorded last season – despite the United keeper still having eight matches left to play.

More impressively, should he maintain his current per-game averages, De Gea even looks poised to break Joe Hart’s single-season record of 166 points recorded in 2011/12 – when the City keeper combined 17 shutouts with 99 saves.

On the basis of these numbers, it would seem impossible to argue that anybody but De Gea belongs between the sticks of in our squads over the final eight Gameweeks.

Digging deeper into the keeper’s numbers, however, highlights a surprising decline in output.

So much depends on Harry Kane.

I'll have to transfer him in for 34, meaning my other transfer will be a player with a DGW, which would limit the SGWers I can get in on WC.

    Dilemma.

Really ? Read that from vertonghen

"Jan Vertonghen has hinted that Harry Kane's injury woes may be worse than fans realise as he admitted he hopes that the striker can return to action before the season is done."

Would you really have to transfer him in? MCI, bri when returning from injury doesn't scream captaincy to me. Pretty sure if he gets fit I'll be going without until GW36 at the earliest.

A few standard choices to make, please make your views felt.

    A. Gundmundsson and Murray
    B. Gross and Barnes

    1. Stephens
    2. Tarkowski (have Lowton)

    W. Christensen (doubling with Alonso - awkward for this week)
    X. Bailly (or even Smalling - meaning doubling with DDG)
    Y. Vertonghen
    Z. Mustafi/Monreal (meaning a transfer to a doubler in 34).

If you're willing to take a risk it's better done whilst Wildcarding. Personally I'm going Mkhi as my 5th mid with the plan of downgrading in 34 to a double. If he doesn't play 32/33 I'm more than happy with Barnes/Murray first sub

Cheers. Do you think he (Robertson) could actually be better option than any of the one's I mentioned above. Smalling I'd count out already as I feel he's too risky pick on wildcard. Christensen is crocked all the time, and there might be rotation in Arsenal defence because of Europa League. Bailly could be the one to double up on United defence but Robertson would also allow Gross instead of Gudmundsson.

I don't. But I genuinely don't think there's a defender under £5m who I would back to outscore him between now and the end of GW34 (whether or not they have a DGW). Liverpool have sured up at the back, have reasonable fixtures and Robbo more or less playing left wing

Best option on WC without FH? Have 35 in mind...
    a) Tomkins, Kenedy, Lukaku
    b) Mustafi, Gross, Firmino

If b) then I would have to make two transfers in 34 to make funds for Lukaku, so would probably do Mustafi + Auba out for Lukaku and a DGW defender... I do already have Firmino as well

Paying £6.0M for Bailly is so frustrating when Smalling and Jones are much cheaper, it’s just who will start....

Rumours Murray unlikely to play both games in 34 because of his age and Brighton being safe at that point.

    1st Question;
The Utd presser should reveal if Jones is fit , even if he is, who plays?

    2nd Question;
    A:Gross & Barnes
    B:Gudmunson & Murray

    1. Going Home
      • 14 Years

IMO Jones is the second choice CB (behind Bailly). Problem is his fitness. I would get him in if he could guarantee me he would be fit for all league games, but that's never going to happen. Equally would get Smalling in if I knew Jones would be out all season - again not going to happen

Second question: not a clue, sorry lol

Behind DDG, Bailly and Valencia all UTD defenders are a risk - expect Smalling will start at the weekend but Jones will come in once he's in full training.

Gross and Barnes. I've also got Gudmundsson as I need triple Burnley. Out of the 3, I'm definitely keeping the midfielders.

Cheers Penman. Do you think getting Robertson as a sgw defender over the likes of Bailly, Christensen, Smalling or Arsenal defender could actually pay off as I'd rate all those somewhat risky picks considering game time? Lower price of Robertson would also allow Gross over Gudmundsson.

I think if you want to risk it then it could well pay off. I’m a double gameweek whore myself, so would always prefer a doubler, but Robertson’s got clean sheet potential over good fixtures and attacking value from a nailed on position.

How will you change things for GW37 you can't play 8 forwards without BB.

    Play 1 for GW32:
    A) Walcott (MCI)
    B) Shaqiri (ars)
    C) Kenedy (HUD) -4 points

Can only afford to have Christensen from the Chelsea backline on my wildcard. Is it worth the risk?

I've got him. If he gets dropped or Injured we will just have to get rid

Bit concerned. He's cursed after all. Otherwise I only have 5.5 in that position and i already have double MNU.

Better than nothing? Or at his price better than someone like Smalling, Mustafi or even Maguire?

If Chelsea loses against Spurs, Chelsea will probably 100% focus on FA cup

Conte is 90% leaving Chelsea this summer + a lot of international players at chelsea who might only play not to get injured. I can see a big slow down in the blues performance until the end of the season. I am not sure it is actually worth investing too much in them

agreed , but the opposite is true if they beat Spurs so lets hope they hammer them 🙂

      WC32/33, BB34, TC37.

      Or TC34, WC36, BB37.

Murray - minutes played vs top 6

    MCI: 30
    ars: 14
    mun: 74
    LIV: 90
    tot: 18
    che: 10
    ARS: 90

Certainly raises doubts as to whether he'll start vs Spurs in the DGW.

For 6m, you should be expecting more than 2 points in a DGW.

so that should mean he at least plays and then plays the other match vs Palace. Not sure if Barnes is any better, and there are few others to fill in that slot. But it seems like he plays more at home? Knockaert being out means also Locadia could start on right hand side. Hm, this is difficult as that 0.6 saved on Barnes could be handy.. Nice work by the way!

    Would you go:
    A) Valencia / Willian
    B) Alonso / Lingard

Valencia is the only certain starter both DGWs IMO. Can see Alonso getting rotated as well as Lingard and Willian.

A but save some money and just go Bailly and Willian

Any helpful (or unhelpful) thoughts or comments on this WC team? I've no FH so can't just load up on DGW34 players. This will get me 8 DGW players for 34, have 10 with a fixture in GW35 and have 9/10 (plus Salah) DGW players in GW37. Can get Kane back in for a hit too

    Cech McCarthy
    Alonso Robertson Lowton Chilwell Mariappa
    Son Salah Sterling Willian King
    Auba Firmino Lukaku

Tinkering a bit. BB in 34 and FH in 35.

    A)
    DDG - Pope
    Alonso - Vert - Simpson - Lowton - Smalling
    Salah - Son - Mahrez - Willian - Gudmunsson
    Auba - Firmino - Barnes
    0,6 ITB

    B)
    DDG - Pope
    Christensen* - Vert - Simpson - Lowton - Cedric*
    Salah - Son - Mahrez - Willian - Cork*
    Auba - Firmino - Vardy*
    0,3 ITB

Then save 2 FT to get Big Kaku in before GW34...
