Yaya Toure returns to boost City’s Europa League hopes, as Sergio Aguero nets a rare away goal. Antonio Valencia is set for a spell on the sidelines, Jon Walters returns to the Stoke City front line, while Landon Donovan is already eyeing up a third loan spell at Everton:

Yaya Toure produced a stand-out performance for City upon his return from African Cup of Nations duties last night. The Ivorian – who signed off on league duties with a 14 point FPL haul against Liverpool back in Gameweek 20 – provided both assists in the 2-1 win at Porto and looks likely to see some Fantasy investment over the next few weeks. Toure had started every one of City’s league games prior to leaving for international duties and, with an average of 4.4 points per game, will be crucial to City’s chances of success over the remainder of the season- expect a Watchlist article sometime next week.

Sergio Aguero’s Fantasy owners will be hoping his late winner signalled a return to form. The Argentine- who hasn’t scored on the road for the past eight league games- was benched last night, as Roberto Mancini started with Mario Balotelli as a lone front man. While Edin Dzeko remained an unused sub, Aguero was sent on as a replacement for the Italian with twelve minutes remaining and slotted home from close range just six minutes later, after Toure’s clever pass.

Phil Jones, Nani and Tom Cleverley all returned to the United first XI in last night’s trip to Ajax. While the first two have missed the last three league games, Cleverley hasn’t featured since Gameweek 10 due to an ankle injury. The fixtures are extremely kind for Sir Alex Ferguson’s side from Gameweek 28 onwards and Cleverley, priced at 5.1 with a 2% ownership, could be a real cut-price differential if he can re-establish himself in the champions’ first XI.

As we mentioned in last night’s late article, Antonio Valencia is set for a spell on the sidelines, after picking up a hamstring injury in Amsterdam. The winger, on as a second half substitute, sustained the injury when setting up his side’s second goal in the 2-0 Europa League win. Ferguson spoke of his side’s injuries in the post-match press conference:

He has a hamstring injury unfortunately. It will be four weeks. It’s a blow to lose Valencia tonight, but bit by bit, we are getting stronger with Nani and Ashley Young coming back. Tom Cleverley has played a bit of football tonight and Phil Jones has played a full game which is good for us. Chris Smalling was on the bench but will play in the return match at Old Trafford next Thursday.

Fantasy owners of Jon Walters will have been pleased with Stoke’s lineup last night. The Irishman’s appeal as an out of position option has considerably lessened in recent weeks, with Tony Pulis affording the likes of Cameron Jerome, Kenwyne Jones and Ricardo Fuller a chance to partner Peter Crouch up front. Walters has been used as a winger instead but returned to the Potters’ front line alongside Crouch against Valencia, with Jermaine Pennant and Matt Etherington handed the roles on the flanks. With home games against Swansea and Norwich up next, investment in Stoke players looks likely but Walters, with a single goal in the last 13 gameweeks, seems to have lost his early-season form, with nearly 130,00 Fantasy managers transferring him out as a result.

Landon Donovan has admitted he is keen on a third loan spell at Everton. The US international – who has been instrumental in the Toffees recent five-match unbeaten run with 3 assists – plays his final game for David Moyes’ side in tomorrow’s FA Cup home clash with Blackpool before heading back to parent club LA Galaxy, but is already eyeing up a return to Merseyside next winter:

I would approach it the same way I have approach it each year. ‘One: Am I physically able to do it. Two: Does he (Moyes) want me to come back. Three: Do I feel like I can contribute and benefit the club? I’m not coming back if it is just for me to have an experience. I have too much respect for the club, manager and players to do that. The expectation is very clear if I come back and if I feel I can do that and they want me to come back then I would absolutely do it.

Liverpool have received an injury boost ahead of their FA Cup Fifth Round clash with Brighton. Maxi Rodriguez has recovered from the foot problem that has kept him sidelined for the past three weeks, while teenage full-backs Jon Flanagan and Jack Robinson are also in the frame for Sunday’s Anfield showdown, according to Kenny Dalglish.

Zoltan Gera is hopeful of a return to action before the end of the season. The Hungarian played just three games for West Brom before rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament in Gameweek 13 but reckons there is a slim chance of returning for the Baggies before the current campaign is out.

    Thoughts on United last night:

de Gea- Much improved in the last 3 games, vs Chelsea, Liverpool & Ajax. As it was Europe, de Gea had no trouble with any aerial balls or crosses from free kicks/corners that we had become accustomed to seeing him struggle with in the League. Even so, he's improved his concentration, and it was nice to see a game where he could boost his confidence without being dealt a barrage or aerial abuse. Been able to show his best quality which is shot stopping, and produced some great saves since Lindegaards' injury. Furthermore, he hasn't been at fault for any of the goals conceded since he came back into the side. Even when Lindegaard returns now, you have to question whether he'll be nailed on for the remainder of games. Personally i think the two of them will be rotating till the end, therefore frustrating Lindegaard owners.

Full backs- It was rare to see a period of games where Rafael and Fabio have completed 90 minutes on a couple of occasions. They must've been working on their fitness as it's been much improved. Evra will be strraight back into the side though so nothing to glean from Fabio's recent appearance other than he did have a great game, but still has a tendency to tackle too hard and get needless bookings. Rafael has been excellent since playing consecutive 90 minutes and i maintain that he is our best/1st choice RB. Hopefully he can string a run of consistent performances, granted he'll still be benched on occasions but that would be due to rotation, and not a blight on his performances.

Evans- He's been our best defender of late, and i hope/think he'll be nailed on for the rest of the season. You can tell his confidence has been sky high. He''s growing more into the Vidic role with every game, but he's also been bringing the ball out of the defence on numerous occasions, showing that he's also a well rounded defender, who's comfortable with both feet. I think he'll win our player of the month for February on the United site. Been a cut above the rest of the United defenders.

Wingers- It's a massive blow to lose Valencia for 4 weeks(if it's accurate). He'll more than likely miss the Spurs game which is a crying shame. I would've taken a 0-0 yesterday if Valencia didn't get an injured. I'd even have taken a Valencia injury if Nani and Young actually looked good, after returning to the side. Neither player looked capable of beating their man in the 1st half last night, and Nani was really frustrating. End product wasn't there. However this can be attributed to the fact that Nani's just returned from injury and Young is still finding match fitness. It's a timely return nonetheless. Hopefully Nani can now find his best form on the right wing. Played excellently there at the start of the season when Valencia was out of form and covering at RB.

Hernandez - Thought he had a very good game last night. He was getting more involved with the build up play and looked really sharp/energetic throughout. Took his goal very well, and made other numerous dangerous runs throughout the game. Him and Welbeck will be rotated. I see Welbeck playing more as he's a better all round player and Rooney seems a better fit with him. Furthemore, Fergie must prefer Hernandez coming off the bench to change a game, rather than Welbeck. They'll be rotated throughout, so i wouldn't advise getting either in FPL, unless it's a 1 week punt when you know someone's injured.

Cleverley/Carrick/Scholes- It was great to see Cleverley return to the line up. This was a great match for him to get his match fitness up, and i wouldn't be surprised if he started the 2nd leg aswell and then was on the bench for Norwich. Don't want to be rushing him at this crucial stage of the season. On his performance, he was solid, without being spectactular. Always gave the other players an option to receive the ball and always found a man with most of his balls. 16/16 completed passes in the attacking 3rd last night is a good comeback. Scholes has just exuded class since he's comeback, and gives us a great option for when we want to just control the game. He makes it all so effortless even at the old age of 37. Carrick was just great again. Always putting in consisent performances, and it's no wonder he's been an ever present in the side since missing early on in the season. He protected the back 4 well, and we didnt' look in any danger of conceding last night. Neither of them tempt me fantasy wise but from a United point of view it's good to see that we won't just be throwing together whoever we have fit in central midfield, but that we actually have options now. Think Carrick is due a rest though, and i reckon he'll get it in the return leg.

Rooney- Had one of his consistent without being exciting games, which is good to see now and again. Doesnt help though i guess, that the wingers weren't on form. He may get rested vs Ajax too, though i hope not.

Finally i just want to say what a relief it is that our squad is shaping up so nicely now for the rest of the season (shame about Valencia). All our defenders( bar Vidic) are fit so it will be rotation central, especially at RB. Great to see lot of options in central midfield now too.

      Great post, dude!

On the fantasy front - I agree with Lindegaard and De Gea being rotated till the end of the season. Hence a united goalkeeper is out of bounds.

Nani will continue to be a frustating option as he will continue his consistent runs of hit and miss. But he is the only viable midfielder I would now consider from United.

      Great comprehensive write-up.

      Personal conclusions for United players...

Getting Lindy is not worth it anymore for me (the combination of waiting on his injury and doubt over whether he'll start)
Evans is a season keeper now
Not biting for Nani or Young until either plays two good matches in a row.
      That's it for Valencia, sadly.
      Welbeck, Chico, no-go zones.
      Rooney GW28 onwards.
Cleverley would be an awesome FPL prospect if he got assists... wait and see.

Spot on about Evans. He's been great the last few games. I think he's kicking on now, and finally making that step up thats expected of him. His composure has been fantastic, which wasn't always something you could say about him. But its the effective way he's carrying the ball out from the back, in recent games, and his willingness to play it with both feet, that have caught my eye lately, both of which you picked up on.

I know we conceded 3 at Chelsea, but i think we've finally settled down at the back now, and he's the main reason why.
I think he's nailed on to start every game, unless he has a blip or injury. We'll always need one of the two to be dominant arially, and thats him in lieu of Vidic, so it'll be one from Rio/Smalling/Jones to partner him at centre half, and probably in that order too i'd imagine.

ENR, are the team values calculated with money in the bank also?
If so, the current leader for the 'Ancelotti in Paris' award is Dr Ennet (Odense Boldklub) with a team value of 113.3M, a full 14M better off than the current 'leader' of the 'KFC Bargain Bucket' award Jakey (Maribor) with a team value of 99.3M.

    Hi guys.

    My team:
    GK: Krul and Vorm
DF: Richards, Taylor (Swansea), Shawcross, R Taylor, Ekotto
MF: McClean, Dempsey, Sessegnon, Bale and Silva
    FW: Ba, RVP and Aguero

    I am planning to:
    1. Remove Ba and Silva and acquire Rooney and either Sigurdsson or Sinclair (both Swansea) ---> if I go for Sigurdsson, maybe i can switch Shawcross for Phil Jones next GW.

    Or
    2. Remove Aguero, silva, shawcross and acquire Rooney, Nani and J Evans (got hit 4pt since i have 2 FT)

    Or
    3. Remove Aguero, Silva, Shawcross and acquire Rooney, Yaya Toure and Evra (got hit 4 pt since I have 2 FT)

Any opinion and advice is very much appreciated....

    Thank you very much guys!

I'd keep Aguero for 2 more GWs... can then switch to Rooney.

I'd keep Ba for at least the next 4-5 GWs.

Silva out could be a decent option, but then no City mid/att could be dangerous... Yaya is a possible, if he appears to be pushing forward in away games.

      Evans instead of Evra.

    ENR/Pamtree if your around:

I'm just wondering what the point of the 4 point headstart for home teams in the Europa league is. Isn't it a bit unfair on the teams who play 1 home game? And with the teams so similar nowadays that 4 points could be the difference between winning and losing.

*I'm not moaning or anything, i think it's a great competition you've organised. Just wondering about this 4 point advantage.

"with the teams so similar nowadays that 4 points could be the difference between winning and losing." Precisely the point of the all-impt home advantage.

Every team goes h2h twice (home & away) against the other 3 teams in the group. Also to be noted, the home advantage holds valid only in the group stages (aka Round 1)
