Mikel Arteta strikes at the death for Everton, his first Fantasy haul in five games, to claim a point for the visitors after loan star Danny Welbeck notched a brace for Steve Bruce’s Sunderland. Elsewhere in our collection of Tuesday morning scribbles, there’s news of a potential Christmas absence for Tim Cahill and updates on injuries to Joe Cole, Karl Henry and Chris Brunt…

Danny Welbeck continued his outstanding spell of form with a brace of goals in last night’s 2-2 draw with Everton. The United loanee took his tally to 3 in his last 2 matches then and earned his second consecutive 3 point Bonus haul in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. Available for just 5.0 as a Forward option, he will be beginning to tempt investment, although it must be said that he will be under considerable threat for a role up front once Asamoah Gyan recovers from a thigh injury that kept him out of last night’s game. That injury cured Steve Bruce’s selection headache and allowed him to recall fit-again Darren Bent to the forward line. Welback could find himself out on the right-flank or even benched in away games, once Gyan is available for selection.

Before last night’s kick-off, Steve Bruce revealed the reason for Gyan’s absence on the night, but the most worrying injury setback concerned defensive stalwart Titus Bramble. News is thin on the ground right now but his own club’s website were wiling enough to go to print on initial fears that he has picked up a knee problem which may require surgery to fix. That will come as a major blow to the Black Cats’ back four and investors in their remaining defensive assets will now have to be wary of the impact that Bramble’s absence could cause over the coming weeks.

Elmohamady was once again on the bench for Sunderland. His prospects of a recall to starting XI look bleak given that Sunderland’s results have improved markedly since Bruce took the step to drop him to the bench. The likes of Boudewijn Zenden and Kieran Richardson (who both claimed assists last night) have now gone above him in the midfield pecking order. Over 20,000 FPL Managers have got rid of the Egyptian in the last Gameweek – more sales are to be expected in the weeks to come.

Tim Cahill’s opener for visitors Everton again demonstrated his value to them. He has now chipped in with seven goals in 13 appearances, putting all of his team-mates, and particularly the actual strikers, to shame. David Moyes however will now need to find a plan B in the not too distant future – Tim Cahill is set to head out with his Australian cohorts for a while…

“They are due to take Tim in mid to late December and depending how far they go in the tournament will determine how long he is away, I’m trying to delay him going until January and will do the best I can”

This is all in name of The Asian Cup, of which now Australia are a part of after switching allegiances a few years back. If Moyes isn’t dealt any favours and The Socceroos make good progress, then Cahill could be absent from Premier League actions for as long as six weeks. Fellow internationals Mark Schwarzer, Vince Grella, Brett Emerton and David Carney could also be called up for duty in this time – as well as Korean Republic internationals Park Ji-Sung and Chung-Yong Lee. It’s not quite as crippling as last season’s African Cup Of Nations, but something to beware of all the same.

Cahill’s goal last night was yet again assisted by Leighton Baines who then went on to set up Arteta’s equaliser – his fifth assist of the season and third in three matches. Incredibly, 8 of Cahill’s last 12 headed goals have arrived via the service of Baines from the left and he remains the most productive attacking full-back in the league.

The award of 2 Bonus Points to Mikel Arteta last night is made even more mysterious by some quick analysis of the performance stats. Steven Pienaar actually had more touches and completed more passes in Sunderland’s half than Arteta. While Arteta can boast 2 efforts on goal, Tim Cahill registered 3 goal attempts, all of which were on target. Leighton Baines meanwhile, aside from his 2 assists, put in more crosses last night than any other full-back over the Gameweek, and only Florent Malouda provided more successful crossed balls. Arteta it seems, is well and truly favoured by the Press Association representatives that award the FPL Bonus, and the Spaniad’s team-mates continue to get overlooked as a result.

Liverpool fans will be left wondering whether the following news is a blessing or a curse as Roy Hodgson revealed that Joe Cole had made progress in his recovery from injury…

”Joe is not that far away really, so hopefully he will have recovered in time for Tottenham.”

By all accounts this should be a bonus for Liverpool as one of their “star” players returns to the fray, but the £8.3m has had a fairly torrid start to his time at Anfield by all accounts. Investors in his team-mates will certainly have raised eyebrows, as whether by coincidence or not, Liverpool’s performances and results have been on an upward trend in his absence.

Newcastle may have a mini defensive crisis on their hands for the next few weeks as Fabricio Coloccini is already set to serve a guaranteed three game suspension for his elbow on Johan Elmander while partner in crime Mike Williamson will join him for that duration if he accepts a charge he received from the FA for a challenge on the same player. This move would likely see Sol Campbell and perhaps even Steven Taylor thrown back into the deep end this weekend, in front of the Sky cameras, as Chelsea come to visit. Drogba doubters may indeed want one last roll of the dice.

Remaining on the suspension front we move over to the Latics of Wigan who will now be down to their vice-vice-vice-vice-captain this week, with Gary Caldwell injured, Antolin Alcaraz suspended for one week having picked up two yellows and Hugo Rodallega out for three thanks to his two-footed effort at Old Trafford. Franco Di Santo will most likely look to step into the Colombian’s boots – we’re not even going to dare wonder what Mauro Boselli is up to these days – and offers a cheap lifeline at only £4.5m in the FPL.

It would also seem likely that Charles N’Zogbia and Jordi Gomez will be left to tussle over the matter of who takes the penalties for the next three games also, a handy bonus for whoever gets it. The fact that N’Zogbia has been speaking out again and calling Wigan ”a stepping stone” might not shine in his favour so much.

Wolves have been rocked by the news that their captain and chief enforcer Karl Henry is likely facing two months on the sidelines having picked up a medial ligament injury to his knee. One man’s loss is another man’s game and the likes of David Jones, Nenad Milijaš and Michael Mancienne (an FPL defender) will all have slightly more room to claim regular starts with Henry sidelined. [Andy]

The Baggies are in a right old slump right now so need every man they can get to turn it around, one of the key man who can help aid such things is previously scribbled “eight out of ten” performer Chris Brunt

”We’re hopeful he might recover for the next game, But he’s still a doubt and we’ll have to see how this week goes. He’s an important player for us.”

The words of Di Matteo are nothing near definitive at this early stage, especially considering he was equally hopeful on striker Peter Odemwingie for a good two weeks before he was able to actually return, but it certainly can’t be bad news for West Brom or those still clinging to Chris Brunt in their squads.

Guys, lookin for some thoughts on defences & defenders for the next couple of months, players/teams I have & players/teams I'm looking at:

    A) Cole / Chelsea
    B) Kolarov / City
    C) Vidic / United
    D) Samba / Blackburn
    E) Konchesky / Liverpool
    F) ??? / Sunderland

Who are people looking to keep / have and why? I'm really looking at 3 from the above but im just not sure who.

Nelsen appears to be getting in the goals and assists lately and having gotten 4 goals and 2 assists last season, so it is by no means freak that he has a goal and an assist already. He is also .2 cheaper than Samba and is also remarkably disciplined for a central defender.

Liverpool still don't interest me, I wil be doing Elmo OUT Nelsen IN this week (have 2 freebies and will most likely bench Nelsen against United) and also do Krul OUT Gordon IN for a general tidy up of my defence.

Cole is a keeper for me, I have Boateng and would prefer Kolarov now, have Vidic and Jagielka also (don't recommend Everton obviously!) and Gordon for Sunderland is the safest option for their defence right now, although Bardsely was very impressive last night

Cheers for your thoughts as always JU.

I'd still rather pay the extra for Samba, I just personally think he's more goals in him.

I think Kolarov is a certainty to come in for me so if I keep Cole I have to decide whether to keep Vidic or go for Samba?

Liverpool do have some nice fixtures but the return of Johnson probably means we'll concede more.

I'd like to bring in Gordon for Jaas at some point but I'm just not sure when, he doesn't rotate well with Foster but the whole rotation doesn't seem to work too well anyway.

        Good post JU. As usual.

Will have a closer look at Mr Nelsen myself, I tend to overlook him as I got him for some double gameweek a few seasons ago and he was sent off in the first game and ended up on negative points.

Having watched Bardsley last night and been well impressed I have just done Elmo OUT Bardsley IN, frees up a further .5m, Elmo would probably drop again this week (where I would lose .1 off selling price, and I needed to do a transfer today to cheer me up!

Have another freebie but may hold fast again this week and have 2 next week to maybe do 2 Blackburn boys in!

          Team this week so far:

          Foster
          Jagielka/Boateng/Vidic
          Fabregas/Nani/VDV/Albrighton OR Adam
          Drogba(C)/Piquionne/Elmander

          Krul/Bardsley/Simpson

What you think of either Albrighton or Adam?

Adam is the superior choice for me. On pens and a bonus magnet, and Bolton are a real "3-2 team" this season. They don't do 1-0 wins.

Albrighton looks good enough but it's Arsenal after all, I think they have good full backs and leak more goals through the middle where Albrighton won't be spending much time.

I really want to get in Evra for Elmo. But it will compromise my team somewhat. Surely with Rooney back there's more potential for the little frenchman. I'm surprised Vidic is getting more attention than him.

I don't think Vidic will score that many. Evra is cheaper. Evra pushes forward much more than Vidic. With the aerial threat of Rooney and Berbatov it could pay off.

I've adopted a cheap defensive strategy thus far but think this is the time to gamble.

If the stats are anything to go by, Evra won't score again until 2014 (his senior career has one league every 3.5 years on average). Obviously he has assist potential but Vidic will score more points.

For Vidic you have to wait for set pieces. Evra is a constant threat. In all honesty i think they'll score almost equally. Evra's just cheaper.

With Nani perfecting his delivery into the box at set pieces this season I would say that Vidic is a constant goal scoring threat at set pieces. United haven't looked so dangerous on free kicks into the box (not shots, Nani's shooting free kick is way way less effective) for a couple of years now.

in all seriousness stokes defence has tightened up compared to early doors they have a far better keeper in now

begovic could be a good goalkeeping punt when the wild card comes in to play in january

stoke have been far better in their last 3 fixtures at home against man city, dont expect them to have an easy ride

JU - I have had Foster & Jussi since gw1 and they rotated well at the start. They way Foster is playing I'm playing him week in week out now.

When he was on my bench he kept a CS and Jussi leaked goals.

I'd say use Jan WC to change keepers. Just stick Foster in goal and forget about him.

depends what the transfer was....if it was for someone who will go up, you only have enough money and is not playing midweek then an early transfer is no bad thing.

Reasons why (rightly) everyone is interested.

      - He is very attacking
      - He loves a shot
      - He crosses the ball alot
      - He takes corners

      No.

As a United fan it is odd that he was offered, or reported to have been offered a new £80K a week contract for 5 years, and has been on the bench ever since. I had him for 6 weeks, and he played twice in that time, on the weekends performance Rafael, while admittedly shaky at times, is first choice RB. The only glimmer of hope for you is the Champions League, and whether Rafael plays in that, but that being said, he played in CL 3 weeks ago and then played at the weekend too, much to my annoyance being an O'Shea owner.

Brown didn't play well against Villa and was skinned time and time again, so that may bring O'Shea back into the picture, I however did O'Shea OUT Vidic IN 2 weeks ago, and would advise you to do the same with either Vidic or Evra, too much uncertainty.

Agreed, the cheapies just weren't doing it this season, now I have 2 cheapies Bardsley/Simpson, 2 mid-priced Boateng/Jagielka and 1 expensive - Vidic. I was only fooling myself with this rotation nonsense, which simply does not work when defences aren't playing well.

Also brought in Gyan instead of davies/Elmander (what a disaster) so have missed out on potential 30/40 pt swing 🙁

I think Gyan is a better long term prospect with upcoming fixtures. Bolton can't thrash every team out there.

In all truth I need a differential so am steering clear of the bandwagon.

Don't chase points. I WC'd too and I'm pretty happy despite having Drog (I have got VdV though). My problem is Gyan. I could have bought Tevez and kept a weak defence but I went for Gyan and Vidic. Not sure what to do now. If Gyan is fit this weekend, I want him and hits after wild cards should definitely be avoided where possible.

Stick with Gyan, he may be back for Wolves.

Drogba is up against a banged up Newcastle defence this weekend, again, stick.

If Elmander and Davies maintain their form then Gyan OUT Elmander/Davies IN is a good move should Gyan either miss this weekend or be injured for a longer period. Carroll is a season keeper for me, albeit that I got rid of him on my WC weeks and weeks ago, and now slightly regret same ( I did take him out for Elmander though!). Carroll is now almost a goal a game guy, and is great value for that.

Good looking team, save your transfer to have 2 next week, patience is a virtue.

Your team looks good. Just be patient. Tevez's points will be shared with balotelli. Gyan will have a great run if he is fit for the next few.

yes I think its made worse that I wanted at least one Bolton coverage from lee/davies/Elmander and then they all go and score big pts 🙁

peaks and throughs my friends will monitor Gyan and remove if need be

It's a mix really, nice home fixtures but stinking away fixtures.

I really need to sort my defence of - ALex, Elmo, Coleman, Enrique, Kolarov.

        Elmo - non starter
Alex - crocked, going for surgery soon Chelsea not upto much.
Coleman - gonna lose his place after last night I think
Enrique - Toon rubbish at the back, scored very few points

        Kolarov - Ace, mega, awesome.

SO I have to start with Elmo and I have 5.0 to spend, well stuck.

Did you see Fulham on Sunday? Much better options out there IMHO: Blackburn defenders, Stoke defenders, even Birmingham maybe

I did Elmo to Bardsley just now, good to know I now have a fully active 15 again.

I am always wary of the Fulham defence, they are not the same under Hughes, but Salcido does look dangerous. I would say stay on the Sunderland buzz and do Elmo OUT Bardsley IN too!

Ok I might be crazy but I might hold onto the Egyptian. Easy fixtures so hopefully he might get a shot. Pray with me fellow managers.

I don't see why that's bad luck. Most people didn't think Elmo would start recently.

It was a risk, a risk that went wrong.

You can't get mad against good reasoning

Loads of stuff happens each week you can't predict

              (Chelsea 0 - 3 Sunderland)

As long as your reasoning was right before kick off then you did the right thing!

Probably not. I didn't start Elmo and I had him in my team though. took a risk with Williamson and Foley.

It's not bad luck to start a player not in favour at his club at the moment was all I was trying to say

Didn't start because MM being over - cautious, then threw him on when chasing the game.
He's not been renowned for tracking back and putting a shift in, but he's getting better at working harder.
Jones is his direct competition at AM but if MM is again feeling cautious he might well play 2 DM's instead. Unlikely though, think MM knows we gotta go for it now and with Henry injured he's running out of defensive players.
So yes, he should start 🙂

        Cheers Turbodog.

I signed him because he always seems to get lots of shots at goal every time I see him play.

Won't get many shots from the bench though...

No, that's very true mate. Trouble is, I don't think Mick knows his best team at the moment.

I can see him starting more frequently from now on, purely based on the number of injuries we have in Midfield - Henry, Guedioura, Edwards etc

Going Elmo > G. Cahill this week. Cause with Elmo out i have 5.6 and Kolarov i 5.7 and dont want to do 4 hit.

    Other defense: Bramble/Bosingwa/Dunn/Jara

    Good move ?
