The Pre-Match Preamble - Gameweek 38 Opinion

I’ve been shocked by the impact of the last few Gameweeks.

This period of the season, notable for the Double Gameweeks and blanks, has always troubled me. While I acknowledge that they bring the Fantasy Football season and communities to life, I’m also wary of the advantage that they present to myself and other managers who study and plan around them.

When the Triple Captain and Bench Boost chips were added to our armoury, those concerns were magnified further. Now it appears that the Free Hit has sharpened those weapons.

Quite frankly, I don’t feel that I deserve to be ranked just outside the top five thousand managers. It feels far too kind.

I set myself high standards and this season has felt like a disappointment. Memorable Gameweeks have been rare and, in the main, it feels like I’ve been treading water.

Looking back, while I avoided the pitfalls of #Kaneixt and benefited from that rather cruel twist, the Spurs striker has still done for me.

My unshakable faith in Kane’s ability to explode points and outscore Salah as a captain – particularly over a run of three double-digit scores for the Egyptian from Gameweek 26 – should have inflicted irreparable damage.

I felt it had. It seemed that a rank of around 30k was now the only realistic target, with any hope of edging into the top 10k abandoned.

But I’d played down how this period of the season can transform matters.

Three of my top four weekly scores have this season have arrived in the last four Gameweeks. The Double Gameweeks, blanks and chips have changed everything.

I’ll take some credit; there were some decent transfers and my solid preparation for Gameweek 31, allowing me to reserve the Free Hit for last weekend, was perhaps a turning point.

But may gains over these last few weeks are still surprising, with my current position feeling almost unjust as a summary of my season.

Before the chips were introduced, we would surely define a top 10k finish as an outstanding campaign. But with them, I’m wondering if we should be aiming higher.

In some of my mini-leagues, it’s a different story. Up against managers with great experience and pedigree, my rank shrinks back to mediocrity.

There are many proven FPL managers placed above me – Jay Eggersdorf, Jack Wain, Mark McGettigan (aka FPL General) – to name just three – who have, once again, experienced fantastic campaigns, pushing up into the top 1000 and beyond.

This is no accident. There is now a structure and formula used to build a strong FPL season and these guys have it cracked.

An early Wildcard and a consistent selection of the optimum captain can hopefully achieve a 10k rank by Gameweek 30. After that, the fixtures and chips can take over and help push on towards a three-digit finish.

Of course, it’s not that simple, and the achievement should still be applauded. However, I wonder if, like me, experienced FPL managers are now redefining their view of a “good” and “bad” season.

I’d be more shocked if any of that aforementioned trio of managers ever slipped to a finish outside the 100k, than if any of them won the FPL crown. Was that the case a few seasons back?

It feels like something has changed.

It seems that there is now a proven strategy for the final set of Gameweeks; it works and works well for those willing to invest time and effort.

I can’t deny that it’s been fun, but now we almost need a new ingredient to shake things up.

A Premier League winter break might do that. Early season chips would certainly change the landscape.

Something needs to disrupt the pattern of a Fantasy Premier League season before we all start getting a little too comfortable.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Not a fan this week either, but for a different reason.

This whole concept of it "feels" different is baloney. Need to look and assess all the things that happened a bit more realistically rather than just looking at score and rank. Luck, as always, has a massive part to play

Empty victory to do well due to chip strategy. People sign up to FPL to choose players they think will do well in the PL this season, and modify that across the season. The chips are a headache for the most part, and force us towards a subset of players with more fixtures than others, according to whichever chip strategy we happen to have submitted to.

      1. Deulofail
        • 9 Years

In that sense, I actually disagree with Mark. We need less enforced strategy by chips, and more freedom to choose our own strategies via WCs and transfers and hits.

I think the chips would be more of a headache if we had to consider them outside of this period. Then that really would shake it up.

Overall, I think many posters on here now expect to gain rank in this period and it's almost a shock if that's not the case.

I'm not sure that's all that great after 3-4 seasons. It doesn't keep us on our toes.

Reacting to the performances of teams and players should be enough to keep us on our toes imo. More exciting to me than simply choosing the more obvious players that fit a pre-set strategy.

Maybe I didn't communicate it effectively. I just feel the FPL season has become more formulaic as a result of the DGW's and Chips.

Experienced managers know what's coming and how to play the last eight Gameweeks and, it seems, the strategies work.

Those who have learned to play well should do well, but I feel that the chips have played into their hands rather than make it more open for those with fewer seasons under their belt.

Maybe Salah hasn't helped - absolute machine and in almost every active team. We'll see next season.

But it's now two years with the chips around DGW's and I think they've been too effective as tools for the experienced manager and I'm torn between this period being exciting, or just a little bit "by the book" in terms of following a set of rules to do well from it.

How about restricting the FH chip(s) to gameweeks in which you have at least one blank fixture?

People can still avoid missing players, so the casual player won't feel dejected when they realise they only have a few players one week.

Then the playing field is level for the BGWs and the weeks before and after it. We can choose from any players in the game rather than only the ones with fixtures that match our strategy (which splits the field in 2 or 3 groups - the winning group decided much more by luck than is desired!)

      3. willl
        • 10 Years

Yeah, chips are very effective, and that is amplified when used with well thought out plan, but surely adding another set of them to the game will just make the gap between experienced and less experienced managers greater?

I think chips being adding is always going to play into the hands of strong managers, and the addition of them is more to keep casuals interested than anything.

A lot of people have also used the chips in a different way and been successful, so can't help but feel all the scouts going with the GW32 WC route has shaped your views there. There isn't a set of rules that fits every player.

Anyway, great rank, congrats. Wasn't trying to have a go :S .

Yeah, maybe I'm playing in a bubble. But I look in the mods and cons league and almost everyone used the same strategy, with about 5-10 points maximum separating our scores. And this, in my best GW of the season!

That tells me that there is an accepted strategy and that this strategy works. It doesn't get us an advantage versus our peers, but it does versus those who don't use that method.

Just a bit flat, that in the best GW of my season, everyone around me in my leagues also did very strongly. Not sure what that says about the game or the communities that have formed.

I'd love to have the balls to go off piste and play the chips at other times, but not sure I'll ever be shaken from playing the same way and I'm sure some of the managers I mention in the article would say the same.

No offence taken btw - the article wasn't meant to be a veiled brag. It was tricky trying to make my point without mentioning my own experience.

Again the emphasis is about the FFS ‘herd’ strategy as if no other strategy exists and the playing of the chips is now done and dusted. If someone WC in 33, BB in 34 and FH in 35 and well ... err yes ... you will get your best gameweeks.

Now others are playing their WC in 36, will BB in 37 and hopefully get great game week ranks too. There is no tried and tested strategy yet because other strategies are still being played out.

No, I wasn't talking about a specific strategy. Just the combination of chips thrown in with the DGW.

As we've said on the ScoutCast, how and when they are played around the DGW's probably won't matter too much. Though of course, everyone thinks their own strategy is best 😉

Fair enough but the below reads as a specific chip strategy not the general use of chips ...

‘’I look in the mods and cons league and almost everyone used the same strategy .... And this, in my best GW of the season ... That tells me that there is an accepted strategy and that this strategy works. It doesn't get us an advantage versus our peers, but it does versus those who don't use that method.’’

Indeed. It's a bit like this Anfield Express thing.

We kind of have to use it, but then we end up questioning it.

We're not going to stop using the DGW/Chip strategy for success because it works. We almost need the game to throw us a curveball and disrupt our established thinking.

The answer is not more chips or more complications. The basic model of FPL works well and introducing lots of chips etc just deviates away from that. I would love to see a return to what makes FPL a great game and lose the chips (but i know this is just a pipe dream)

Jonty's a good example. By his standards he would say he had a terrible season in 2016/17. He still came 88k. Is that awful? No it's not.

But his end of season hike owed a lot to the DGW chip spell, again highlighting how this period can really shift things in favour of an experienced manager.

It's all good, but I think another couple of seasons of it and we'll be taking it for granted and I don't think that's great.

No, I was saying my season doesn't feel mediocre based on rank, but does next to our experienced managers in my mini-leagues - like the names I mention.

Best 4.4m defender for the double guys?

    A) VDH (bou SOU)
    B) Chilwell (WHU ARS) - also got Morgan
    C) Dummett (wat tot)

Is VDH nailed on? His minutes seem a bit sporadic

Syd mentioned reports of a “well owned City player” not playing today? Sterling? Press predicted lineups seem split between inclusion and exclusion. (Although I thought Silva was back in Spain right now)

D.silva or sterling. Sterling has highest ownership for city I think

I mulled yesterday that I bet Silva was back in Spain...I based it entirely on the fantastic agreement Silva and Pep seem to have over this arrangement in the past.

I think it’s credible. Do they want him for the trophy and last home game to be party of the celebration? Yes. Do they need him today? No. His son is very sick.

Would you do David Silva (not playing this week) -> Son for a hit? Ignore next week, I'm only looking at this week.

Depends on what you have off the bench if Silva is out

Bailly and Mahrez to Smalling and Sterling for a hit? (Don’t have Salah)

Great preamble! Couldn’t agree more! Pleased with my rank but just feel I’ve never really had many very good weeks and my enjoyment has been limited

Yeah. That's at the heart of it for me. In previous seasons it feels like I would have had to work to earn a high rank and have some stellar Gamweeks. This season has felt pretty ordinary, until the DGW/chip period.

Just feels a bit hollow compared to when I've had to really have some outstanding moments to crack a 2k finish.

Well you’ve had some outstanding gameweeks as in the last few. Many people who used a similar chip strategy didn’t do as well btw.
Actually I think that it’s getting more difficult to get a high rank than before since the number of active/experienced teams is getting bigger and bigger. I honestly think you’re oversimplifying the season because of this last month, while many here sit on much lower ranks so you must have been having a fine season already.

Maybe. But one GW rank in the top 30k all season (before the DGWs) doesn't feel like a great season. Maybe I've just been slow and steady. Dunno.

In the top 50 career Hall of Fame the average is 2056 points. 12/50 are in the top 10k. I think it's fair to say you're having an okay season. The level of play is continuously increasing, but chips strongly favor the most dedicated managers.
