Another blank for Mohamed Salah, returns for (mostly) low-owned Chelsea stars and an unexpected deluge of points from Arsenal – Gameweek 37 is starting to become the stuff of legend for all the wrong reasons.

The Blues’ 1-0 victory over Liverpool kept things nice and interesting in the fight for a top-four finish.

But it was neither of those things for many Fantasy Premier League (FPL), with more than half of them enduring a second successive Gameweek without a significant contribution from Salah.

Such has been the impact of the Egyptian this season that he went into Double Gameweek 37 as the second most popular captaincy choice, with 19.42% handing him the armband despite the lack of a second fixture.

“Ghost-ship” or inactive squads played a part in that percentage, though that impact of Sunday’s blank remains significant.

Following a yellow card, Salah returned one-point return for only the third time of an incredible campaign, with the other two occurrences arriving from limited pitch-time.

His failure to score for two league matches running was an even rarer event, mirrored just once this year across Gameweeks 7 and 8.

That would have pleased the 356,000 managers who had moved him out for the double, but they now have the awkward decision of whether to consider him once again for Gameweek 38 for a fixture against Brighton which now has greater importance for Liverpool.

Salah had just one shot on goal at Stamford Bridge, which suggests that the season is finally catching up with the winger and perhaps Jurgen Klopp’s side as a whole.

But the campaign is still not done, and Klopp is unlikely to be fielding a second-string side for the Seagulls’ visit on the final day, with Chelsea now able to draw level with the Reds in the fight for fourth should they win at home to Huddersfield in midweek.

Ahead on goal difference, Liverpool would then need to match Chelsea’s result next Sunday to ensure Champions League qualification.

Given that Klopp made just one change from the team that took on Roma, with Nathaniel Clyne replacing Jordan Henderson as Trent Alexander-Arnold moved into midfield, a strong final-day line-up looks inevitable.

Handing the armband to Salah for that match is not so clear-cut, however.

The initial moves in the Gameweek 38 transfer market suggest faith in both Salah and team-mate Roberto Firmino is still strong.

The pair were the top two for Double Gameweek 37 sales, but are now among the top four for transfers-in heading into the final weekend of action for the season.

For Salah, the recent ‘drought’ is relative to an extraordinary campaign thus far, though Firmino’s output has tailed off dramatically – he now has just two goals in eight Gameweeks.

Nonetheless, Liverpool have form against next week’s visitors.

They beat Brighton 5-1 earlier in the season, with the Brazilian scoring twice, so there is clearly hope of a similarly emphatic result to help wash away some of Gameweek 37’s more unsavoury memories.

But the simplicity that Salah had brought to the game – buy him, pick him, captain him – can no longer be relied upon for what will almost certainly be a crucial final round of fixtures.

The one big factor could, bizarrely, be Huddersfield Town. If they can pull off a result at Chelsea to match yesterday’s draw with Man City, then Liverpool would only need a draw against the Seagulls.

Chelsea not done just yet

A few weeks ago, Antonio Conte was the captain of a sinking Chelsea ship, with Fantasy managers rushing to the lifeboats as their expensive stars were moved on.

Five straight wins in all competitions later, it seems we all blinked too early.

Cesar Azpilicueta and Olivier Giroud were the two most bought Blues players for their Double Gameweek 37, welcoming aboard less than 70,000 new managers between them to indicate how little interest was to be had in their assets.

Both produced good returns against Liverpool, with the Frenchman – owned by a mere 2.6% – scoring yesterday’s winner to also claim maximum bonus points.

Giroud has now netted four times in those last five fixtures and seems to be the best fit up front in the 3-5-1-1 formation that Conte has employed to help stop the recent rot.

His start yesterday was helped by an injury to Alvaro Morata, although the Spaniard is expected to be in contention for Huddersfield’s midweek visit, with the Chelsea coach suggesting he will ring the changes:

“It’s not serious [Morata’s injury]. In my mind, there is the intention for him to be in contention for the game against Huddersfield. I hope to recover him, also because today, on the bench, we had no strikers.

We’ll have to make rotations on Wednesday because today took a lot of energy from us. Then we’ll see what happens. It’s important to approach this situation with great pride and a great will to fight, to show we are still alive.”

In defence, that recent change in formation has now produced back-to-back clean sheets, which meant instant returns for the 15.9% of managers who stuck by Marcos Alonso through his suspension, with the Spaniard fast-tracked back onto the teamsheet.

But the star performer at the back was Victor Moses (2.7%), who set up Giroud’s winner and was awarded two bonus points for his second double-digit haul in three Gameweeks.

The Nigerian has now accrued 35 points from his last five starts, scoring once and providing three assists along the way.

It remains to be seen if both wing-backs retain their starts amid Conte’s rotation in midweek, with Emerson and Davide Zappacosta available as options to the Chelsea coach.

Not everyone has benefitted from Conte’s recent formation change.

Willian’s 13.7% ownership makes him the third most popular player in Chelsea’s squad, but he has now managed just 13 minutes of action across the last three Gameweeks as Eden Hazard continues to support Giroud as the most advanced of the Blues’ midfielders.

Aubameyang to the rescue

While the majority of big hitters failed to fire in their first match of Double Gameweek 37, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was the star of the show as Arsene Wenger was afforded the perfect Emirates send-off.

The Gunners manager named a strong line-up after his side exited the Europa League on Thursday evening, with the Gabon international and Henrikh Mkhitaryan stationed on either side of Alexandre Lacazette against Burnley.

Despite that initial role on the left, Aubameyang still produced two goals and an assist to tally 16 points – his biggest haul of the season.

The most sold player (207,000) for Gameweek 36, he was moved on by a further 56,000 last week.

As many as 41,000 of them swapped him out for Harry Kane or Gabriel Jesus, who currently sit on two points apiece.

As a result, just 11% of FPL managers held the winter signing heading into yesterday’s match, with only 104,000+ handing him the armband.

In terms of Triple Captain chips, while over 190,000 were played on Kane and 75,000+ on Jesus, just a little more than 8,000 had the foresight to opt for Aubameyang.

With a trip to Leicester up next, he now has the platform to cement his spot as a huge armband differential and shake up the FPL rankings.

Aubameyang’s numbers already hint at his potential for our three-man frontlines next season.

An average of 6.5 points per match is second only to Sergio Aguero’s 6.8 among FPL forwards, while his 112.6 minutes per goal is ranked third behind the Argentine (93.8) and Kane (107.5).

Gunners profit from home comforts

As many as four Arsenal player delivered double-digits in the 5-0 win over Sean Dyche’s side, with Lacazette, Hector Bellerin and Sead Kolasinac joining Aubameyang with bumper hauls.

While the likes of Nacho Monreal and Shkodran Mustafi warmed the bench from start to finish, full-backs Bellerin (two assists) and Kolasinac (one goal) both profited from Arsenal’s twelfth clean sheet of the campaign.

Lacazette’s goal and assist means he has five goals and an assist over his last five league outings, with the Frenchman’s link-up play with Aubameyang looking more promising as the season unfolds.

Currently sitting on ten points, Lacazette has proved another big differential – only 742 played their Triple Captain chip on the summer arrival.

Yesterday’s victory means the Arsenal are level with Man City for wins (15) and points (47) in front of their own fans, scoring 54 times to the champions’ 58.

That contrasts starkly to their tally of 13 points on the road – only three teams have picked up fewer points away from home.

Those backing the Gunners will hope they can address this form quickly, given that the final two fixtures of 2017/18 take them to Leicester and Huddersfield.

    Gameweek 38 moves

For many Gameweek 37 has been a set of fixtures to forget so far. I thought it may be good to dwell no longer and instead look ahead to the final Gameweek of the campaign.

Who are you thinking of captaining?
Who are you thinking of bringing in?
Who will be the best differentials?

And how much of an influence is mini league standings to your decision?

For me I'll base my decisions on trying to get the best rank I can.

I've two of my three cash leagues sown up...but the third is in the balance - the current leader has an 18 pt lead and is currently bench boosting. Worse of all he incredibly still has his triple captaincy left - which will certainly go on Salah in the final week.

With that in mind I'm going to captain Salah and bring in a player that could score well that he doesn't own - so maybe Zaha.
Its a long shot though but you never know.

Surely if your rival has a lead and is going to triple Salah then you straight captaining Salah when chasing makes no sense.

I have two aims - get highest rank I can and there's a slender hope of catching my rival.

But I would never base all decisions on what one player may do.. Have to still consider rank.

For me Salah is the best captaincy option by miles, especially having seen how Brighton performed last season once they had promotion secure.

If I'm to catch him I really need Kane to do well midweek - without that I think his lead will be too much. I'll rely on my diffs then - already got a few and I'm banking on him not getting Zaha. Ramsey another I may consider - those sort of capable of double digit haul players.

I have the triple captain chip. I wouldn't be so sure your rival will captain Salah. Auba looks more appealing at the moment.

Hudders battling for their lives. Doesn't look like a great pick. Salah is Guareented to score a goal in the last match IMO to break the record and is the best captaincy option by miles unless Kane convinces me vs Newcastle

I'm having an awful season and might go for a fun punt - but then again I (like you) am quite dull so I might go for something relatively safe.

I'm thinking it has to be Salah captain. Zaha looks a good move.

But what about someone like Andy Carroll? If I thought he'd start I might do Austin > Carroll. I don't know why I ever bought Austin and I don't really want to end the season with him!

Sam Vokes if Barnes is out another possible.
Zaha will probably only come in if Arnie is out.

I really want to get Ramsey - ultimate high risk though given Wenger's team sheets.

Yeah you nailed it. I expect Arnie to be back, but him out is the only way I get Zaha in. It was Arnie vs. Ramsey and I went Arnie as he seemed safer.

Probably not looking back now, and going Zaha, unless Wenger says something to make me think Ramsey is 100% nailed

Haven't taken out Salah he has to come back for me. For sterling or sane depending on who plays mid week

Rashford the worst punt of all time so he'll also come out for a cheap final effort in what will hopefully be a high scoring last weekend

This week has been a disaster. Mini league leader inexplicably avoiding city and spurs and placing his triple on Auba

You just don't get any luckier than that. Fair play, but the dream is over now. 63k currently so want to get in top 50.

Straight 6 top 70k finish for me, but I loose my mini-league 2nd season in a row, something go wrong and I`m feel really depressed...

For 38 I will get Salah for a hit and captain him.

Whoever I guess is least likely to be benched of jesus, sterling, sane.
Was Salah, but can't be fussed now for a hit. Perhaps Arnautovic.
        Arnie/Zaha.

As I've said before Salah is saving his brilliance for the final so it has to be Kane (c).

Best differentials: PvA, Mane (instead of Mo if you're chasing) and Pogba - if he plays.

Im thinking Aubameyang, Arsenal finishing strongly and he looks in fantastic form. Isn't Salah a risk given the CL final?

I'm considering bringing in a replacement for Mustafi as my team has scored will this week, 87 points from BB with TC left.

Best differential, De Bruyne? Away to Southampton, a team that will need to come on to City which will play into the Belgians hands.

I have the Leicester beach boys, Vahrez, and it sets me up in an akward price bracket because Salah for Mahrez gives me 7m on a striker, and no one really strikes me as good options. I could go for Mané, but it leaves me 0.1 short of Giroud, which is the only striker under 9 i really want. i´ll take a hit, question is do i take Firmino which i think is the worst pick from Liverpools front three but who gives me better options in midfield or Salah who gives me far worse options up front? Do i want Salah after the last couple of performances? Firmino and a punt on Wijnaldum?

Captain is out in the blue at, no idea

Differntials, Mkhitarian, Lacazette, Wijnaldum, Andre Ayew

My aim is high as possible, from 44k, but having 15 players left with Kane tc this week so difficult atm to name exact target, but 20-25k could possibly in reach?

I'm playing to stay in the top 10k and am currently 23 points behind the leader of my ML. Don't think I'll catch up, in part because we have similar teams, so it's not much of a consideration.

For GW 37 I did Salah to Sterling, which funded Vardy to Jesus. I kept Mahrez though, and for 38 I'm selling to get Salah (c) back. Originally my plan was to fund this by selling Azpi for a Liverpool defender (CS odds: 1.53), but since both Vertonghen and Arnautovic have become injury doubts, so I just have to wait and see. Crystal Palace players are good enablers as well.

My moves this GW has gone well for me so far, but now leave me an awkward position with no Salah and 0.0 ITB. It will be a -4 to get Salah (C) back, but I can't decide which attacker should make way out of Aubameyang, Sterling and Alli.

0.1 short of being able to do Jesus > fodder, Ibe > Salah (-4).

Aubameyang came in this week for a hit and has already justified the move and then some. Very hard to drop him but it's an away game. Alli vs Leicester on the beach. Sterling is Sterling.

Or do I save the hit, spend 1 FT on upgrading a defender, and not have Salah. Kane (C). Really torn.

I have 5 grand riding on winning a ML so for me, that takes precedence and whether I'm leading. If leading, I play safe since I think I have a better all round team and rivals will captain Kane. Salah seems to have lost a little form. If Sterling sits vs Brighton I may C since he would be a likely starter. All depends on results this week though and who still has something to play for which seems the key metric.

-He seemed tired and out of pace yesterday against Chelsea but probably Salah will be my captain.

This is my first season, and with BB active with 15 DGW'ers I have started the GW with 66 (-8), jumping from 35k OR -> 18K.

Currently 33 and 62 behind the leaders in my cash ML (£1200)

On one hand I would really like to finish inside the top10K in my first ever season, but on the other hand I would really like to challenge and possibly overtake my ML-rivals. Guess my transfers will try to do both since they're both in top10K.

On -148 in hits so far this season, and I think that has hurt my rankings a bit, but it has been alot of fun though 😉
I am most likely doing KDB -> Salah for free, and field those of my players my rivals do not own.

          Something like this for GW38:

          Fabianski
          Bellerin - Vert - Smalling - Naughton
          Sterling - Eriksen - Salah - Sane
          Ayew - Kane

Quiet lucky Stoke is doomed now. Makes my 3x Swansea assets much better for last GW 😉
If Vert is ready, and Bellerin looks like starting I will not take a hit before next GW.

-4 before next week would would actually result in an average of -4 pr. GW throughout the entire season.

Need to take 1 more hit I guess 😉

See what happens rest of this GW but might just keep captain on Kane.

Quite like Zaha as differential, not sure who I would take out though if I did go for him.

I wonder if Andre Ayew could be the best differential option in the Zaha / Arnie bracket. I know he’s out of form, but Swansea might have to win, while Palace and West Ham can finally relax... And we saw what that did to Burnley. Thoughts?

I was weighing up a move for A.Ayew but then realised having triple swansea put paid to that thought.

Depends what happens in next match too, lose to the Saints and they're as good as relegated.

Yeah, not so far anyway, still a game to turn-it-around! I already have triple swansea, not that I think that itself is a bad idea (although maybe it is, we'll find out soon).

0 ITB & 1 FT. Unbelievably might not make a transfer on the last week!!

          Foster Elliot
          TAA Lowton Kompany Vertonghen Alonso
          Sterling Shaqiri Eriksen Ramsey Lingard
          Kane Jayew Jesus

Completely focused on trying to keep my top 10k record in tact - going for an eighth straight top 10k finish.

But it's very much in the balance as I've not been in there all season and currently sit just inside the top 15k. Potentially 11 DGWers to go this week (Kane TC) but that includes Vert who's a doubt, Willian who's been dropped and triple Leicester!

So, depending where I sit at the end of this GW I'll be either playing safe to consolidate (probably by getting Salah back) or punting to try and get in the top 10k!

Looks like Kane could easily turn out to be the best of the top three captaincy choices, so you're still in there fighting.

          I've got Willian & Son.
Considering either Willian to Zaha/Ramsey for free & keeping Son with Kane (C).
My other option is Willian & Son to Salah & RLC.
RLC has returned in the last 2 GWS & may be a decent differential to get Salah (C) back in.

I've got Kenedy unavailable, now Vertonghen a doubt. My ML is safe, so just need to preserve rank now. Hoping to be inside too 20k so probably Salah or Kane captain. See how this week goes. Might even bring Van Aanholt back had him for a few weeks around GW31-35.

waiting to see how much more carnage this week does before even thinking about differentials - Chilwell, Barnes, Vertonghen all doubtful. Eye on city rotation.

Sticking with the plan, which was to choose between these option:

          Eriksen > Salah
          Lingard > Zaha/Ramsey
          Wood > Rashford
          Lowton > 5.5 def

One of the midfield transfers looks to be the best at the moment. I'll have to think a bit more about whether Salah is worth it (incl. Whether I would captain him or not)

Considering captain, I think Auba will be hardest to ignore. If Mkhi looks nailed on, then he's another option along with Sterling and Jesus.

I’ll be following the plan from my GW33 Wildcard and do:

        Eriksen -> Salah

Choosing the little Dane over Salah has been a profitable decision, but feel I should move it back for GW38

Depends who you get in. I took a hit for Arnie over Willian. Assist and confident Arnie plays where as I thought Willian would be stuck on the bench for two games and I still think that.

In previous doubles there have been people (not me) taking -12s and more all who made it count.

It really does depend. My -8 looks likes it's going to pay off massively, and it's that potential high ceiling that I take the risk for.

            Tarkowski (-1) > Masuaku (6)
            Salah (1) > Arnie (5)
            Wood > Aubameyang (16)

With a game each still to play that's a big points swing already.

To me a bad hit is one where the players you transfer out could easily outscore those you transfer in. If it's a hit because you just fancy the the form or fixture, it's risky.

A good hit is one where there is a very clear advantage to the new player/s e.g. DGW over SGW, old player is an injury doubt, new player will be your captain, the hit actually helps you strengthen in both positions not just one player, etc.

I was very confident in my -8 this week. At other times this season I've taken hits and realised later they didn't have enough strong reasoning behind them, regardless of how they turn out.

Only one player in the overall top hundred captained Aubameyang.
That player is Faisal Idris, and it lifts him from 12th in the world up to 2nd.
Faisal is also now 2nd in our main FFS league, as well as taking the lead in My Doubles, Blanks & Chips mini-league.
He has 11 DGW players in his starting eleven, plus a couple more on the bench, but he didn't even play a chip this game-week - he had already used them in GW22 (TC), GW33 (WC), GW34 (BB) and GW35 (FH).
His differential captain in DGW37 has trumped all our chips!

To be fair, removing all the rotation concerns and the blindness to poor form, an Arsenal forward (Auba/Laca) was the best captain choice for this week. Having said that, kudos to him for actually going through with it and not getting wrongly swayed by GW37 of previous seasons.

Most of the others probably thought it was too risky to captain someone other than Kane, Jesus or Sterling, and hoped that their own captain (possibly tripled) would outscore the other two and thus thin out the opposition.

They may also be waiting till GW38 before taking bigger risks.

Im actually surprised by that stat, surely you would want to be going for it when youre in the top 100. If everyone is going Kane or Jesus, it makes sense to go with a differential and a guy with Aubameyangs stats, what a differential!. In fact, for it to be just one manager in the top 100 is shocking, they all following templates?

Number 100 is 76 points behind Bharat - probably too much to catch up.
But there are 15 players within 40 points of the leader, so perhaps more of them ought to have been going for big differentials.
Ka Vee Yong in 13th place did captain Alli, but all the others in the current top 15 (apart from Faisal and Ka Vee) captained Kane, Jesus or Sterling.

Some of them probably also suffer from be a lack of ambition or belief, and may be happy merely to secure their place in the top 100, top 50 or top 10.

Thanks for posting this Redlightning. And thanks for all the respect..

No chips left, and for me it's no difference between finish in top 12-100. That's why i go for a differential (c).

          Why auba?
          - It's must a DGW player
          - A striker have more chance to explode (hattrick from striker is more possible rather than 3 assist/goal from midfielder)

With Kane & Jesus are TC candidate, Lukaku and Morata injured, big name left are Giroud, Vardy, and Auba/Laca. Given the form, fixtures, and security of start, Auba is my man.

But there's still big chance for Kane/Jesus(C/TC) to ruin my dream of winning FPL.. 🙂

        He has Jesus(c) ,Vert-Lemina-Arnie doubts

I have a similar scenario where my rival is about 25 points ahead and he has Kane TC. I'm thinking Newcastle have a good defence and could cause him problems to score big. But its Kane, he has the potential to score a hatrick against anyone. City's goals can come from anywhere so less a target man than Kane. But its football, impossible to predict.

        Perspective, people.

Any gameweek where the top 4 all fail to win, and indeed all 4 fail to score, will be disappointing.

For those of us with 10+ DGWers in our squads, we’ve just been given 30-40 points for free. We all start again on Tuesday. Chill out.

The perspective is comforting, if u realize that the majority of us on here have had terrible weeks(from the hype)
...but not as nice when part-timer’s & ghost ships are beating us ‘serious players’ (ie. 43pts gave me Green Arrows in all my leagues—except Overall Rank!)...lol!
But Fair Play mate, and here’s looking to midweek matches!

My rival has Auba, Ota, Davies, Lingard, Arnie, Lingard & a 27 point lead.

I only have Son, Willian, Morgan & Vertonghen left.

        Battle lost?

My only hope is that he doesn’t have Salah for next week and I can get one differential by transferring out Willian/Barnes.
