Team of the Season – Nicolas Otamendi

Nicolas Otamendi has been named among the Fantasy defenders of the season after winning our recent poll.

The Manchester City centre-back’s starting price of £5.5m, combined with a steady stream of clean sheets (15), goal threat (four goals) and bonus points (21) paved the way for a hugely successful Fantasy season.

After ending 2017/18 as the most owned defender (25.8%), Otamendi topped our poll with 23.3% of the votes.

However, in Fantasy terms, the centre-back did not even begin the 2017/18 campaign as the most popular defender at the Etihad Stadium.

Going into the opening weekend, just 146,000+ Fantasy managers named Otamendi in their squads. Kyle Walker, recently signed from Spurs, was the far more popular figure having claimed 847,000+ initial owners.

That made perfect sense at the time as Walker had outperformed his new team-mate over the previous season.

Otamendi had not been a guaranteed starter in Pep Guardiola’s defence and had made just 29 appearances compared to Walker’s 31 for Spurs. Even Danilo (168,000+ owners), John Stones (193,000+) and Vincent Kompany (220,000+) all experienced greater demand than the Argentinian as managers prepped for a new season.

But the opening day trip to Brighton was to set the tone for the months to come.

Otamendi registered eight points, including two bonus point, in a 2-0 win, despite not being involved in either of the goals. Meanwhile, Walker, Danilo, Stones and Kompany were awarded the six points for the clean sheet.

Even so, Walker in particular still proved more popular in the market and pulled in another 169,000 new owners for Gameweek 2, only to be sent off against Everton. Otamendi meanwhile, convinced only 166,000+ managers to snap him up following his standout score at the Amex Stadium.

It wasn’t until Gameweek 8 that the Argentinian finally eclipsed Walker’s popularity.

By this point, Otamendi’s importance to the team had become clear, with his security of start boosted by Kompany’s Gameweek 4 calf-injury. Price rises had taken him to £5.7m, but that still represented strong value for managers compared to the £6.6m required for Walker.

Indeed, that sum proved an efficient investment over the first nine Gameweeks where Otamendi recorded 6.11 points per match. In that time, no defender had more penalty area goal attempts (nine), with only Marcos Alonso (five) landing more shots on target (four). Otamendi had already found that net twice.

Most importantly, by now, we had the data to determine that the Bonus Points System (BPS) favoured Otamendi and his role for City.

As a ball-playing defender in a team that dominated possession, he was top of the charts for pass completion for his position, a factor which boosted his BPS totals.

Otamendi’s most productive spell, between Gameweek 15 and 21, saw him score a further two goals, one against West Ham and another away from home in the Manchester derby. Adding in four clean sheets, this took his match average for that period to an impressive 7.42 points.

By Gameweek 23 his price had spiked at £6.5m.

The second half of the campaign was far less productive, with Otamendi registering negative points after conceding four and being booked in the memorable defeat to Liverpool at Anfield in Gameweek 23.

Between that setback and the end of the season, Otamendi produced just 3.38 points per match and failed to even feature in three of the last four matches.

THE PROSPECTS

Otamendi seems unlikely to rival his value to Fantasy managers in 2018/19 after recording his best FPL total score (156).

Only Azpilicueta (179) and Alonso (165) outperformed him among defenders, which will mean that the City man is set to start the new campaign in the £6.0m+ bracket after his modest initial value of £5.5m this season.

Rising £0.9m between Gameweek 1 and Gameweek 38, no defender experienced a more significant increase in price. Given that value was a key factor in his popularity, it’s difficult to see him maintaining similar ownership levels once placed among the top bracket.

But that won’t affect Otamendi’s points output, and we should still expect to see the centre-back challenge at the summit of the defender standings. That should ensure a healthy level of investment.

Indeed, we will have to consider cover of Man City’s defence.

Manchester United (19) were the only side to record more clean sheets than the champions (18), and both Otamendi and goalkeeper Ederson rank among the top three scorers in their respective positions. Both will go into 2018/19 as targets, regardless of price.

Otamendi’s goal threat provides the extra incentive to invest. Only three defenders bettered his totals of four goals and 32 shots this season.

And bonus points will also remain a key factor. Overall, Otamendi finished the season in third place on the BPS among defenders, his total of 742 ranking behind only Azpilicueta (913) and Vertonghen (778).

His impressive passing statistics made a crucial contribution, with Otamendi attempting and completing more passes than any other defender. He collected 182 BPS points from pass completion alone, with Azpilicueta ranked second back on 152.

Despite Guardiola’s team selection over the final fixtures, Otamendi should remain his go-to option at the back as City bid to retain the title. And if rotation becomes more of a factor in attacking areas, we may be confident in filling our third City slot with a defender.

Otamendi can undoubtedly push over the 150 barrier for a second season. But his popularity will come down to his price tag and whether we again struggle to find assured starters in the defences competing with City for clean sheets.

This is one example where I think FFS blinders came into play. The conventional wisdom on here was "MCI defence is poor" when stats suggested otherwise. 5.5 for a BAP magnet + goal threat was an absolute steal.

The main difference is the transfers - you get 3 transfers a gameweek with an optional 4th and you can use these at any time throughout the gameweek, so you can bring in players that are going to play later in the gameweek if you want to

Pope and Heaton certainly both deserve to be number one Premier League goalkeepers, so I hope one of them gets the chance to move on.

But they may not get quite as many points for another team as they do at Burnley.

And Liverpool's high press is completely different from the Burnley defensive system.

If he signs then I think he's going to play deeper behind the front 3 and be the first choice back up to each of them. It's a squad game, and ours is poor. I think we're gonna see XXX-Keita just behind Fekir, who feeds the front 3. Then use the likes of Ox Gini Hendo Milner to rotate. Looks like Klopp wants another winger too so rotation central at Pool next season

Never owned Otamendi once this season. I didn't trust Pep's defensive rotation at first, and by the time it was clear that he wasn't being rotated I was priced out and felt like I'd missed the bandwagon.

Mendy for me next season though, especially as they'll probably be the same price.

Mendy will probably be 6.5 as FPL seem to overprice all the wing backs for some reason. Do you think Otamendi will be as high?

Otamendi will definitely be 6.0, just unsure if they'll go the extra half a mil with him.

Mendy will definitely be 6.5, I think he was this season so they won't drop him after the season they've had.

I imagine the 'budget' defender will be Laporte, so if he breaks in regularly he might be a popular pick.

      A miracle.

Being honest, I think we'd need a City meltdown to win the Premier League. I don't think there's any particular transfers we could make that would give us instant gratification when City have such a settled squad with Pep at the helm.

There's areas to improve, of course, but I don't think we can improve enough to close 19 points in one season.

I feel a bit sorry for ManU fans, as I fear the second place finish will build fans expectations in an unrealistic way.

I follow and read a lot of people in the football analytics community, the consensus seems to be that ManU are probably(probably) the 6th best team in the country, plus De Gea. And De Gea is very unlikely to ever have a season that is as good as the one he just had.

Germany are always a threat and Muller's record at world cups is unbeatable for me. Sane and Werner will probably share goals with him but he always seems to be the talisman.

Lloris should be known as Mr Consistency.

    A look at his history.
Outta the 3000+min seasons he's had:
    17/18: 144pts
    16/17: 143pts
    15/16: 140pts
    14/15: 121pts
    13/14: 140pts

Anybody more consistent than this guy?

Funny that he's scored his highest total this year despite being pretty poor in my opinion. Made way too many mistakes for a Top 4 keeper and always looked shaky when I watched Spurs.

I agree. He's probably considered their weakest link after this season, but I guess they would struggle to find a replacement that they can be totally convinced is a better option?

Yeah, I still think he's a quality keeper and maybe just had an off-year. He isn't old for a keeper, unlike someone like Cech who I think is simply finished at the highest level.

He's definitely still better than Vorm who is their back-up.

Mourinho is unbelievable. Yesterday going on the defensive and claiming he got 100 points in Spain and then accusing Chelsea of being defensive and not deserving to win. Utd only looked better because they were chasing the game. So many people being mugged off by the new specialist in failure.

Does anyone know if the fantasy football for the world cup where you pick a 25 player squad and make substitutions each day is available for this world cup? I remember FFS had a tournament using this format for the 2014 world cup that was brilliant fun and got a lot of people here involved. Hopefully something like that will be happening again this year.

It must have been mentioned plenty of times already, but I think it's better to start the season with the cheapest 3rd forward and invest more in cheap 4th and 5th defs, where value and nailedonness can be found at prices as low as 4,5.
    Do you agree?

    1. McEwan
      • 14 Years
      5 years, 11 months ago

Cheapest 3rd forward, as in the cheapest playing forward at say 5.5/6 or 4.5 bench fodder?

I don’t think I’ve ever written off the 3rd striker slot in the way that I have 5th def/mid but that’s just me. My tactics have become a bit stale so something I might look at when the fixtures/preseason/prices become available

        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

People always seem to look at that 3rd striker spot as needing to be filled, but there are more high-scoring 4.5m defenders than there are 5.5/6m forwards normally and you've then got an extra million to spend elsewhere

        1. McEwan
          • 14 Years

I am one of those that is guilty of that tbh and whilst it’s been fairly successful over the years, it’s something I maybe need to open my options to include.

I don’t digest data as such, and comparing points isn’t an exact science, whilst their may be more high scoring defenders in terms of total points, that 3rd striker slot tends to be the budget option over a 4-6 gw period then transfer to another. 4th/5th defender slots tend to be rotators over a longer time frame. As I say, my tactics probably need a refresh so it’s something I will look at going forward

Gabbiadini, Joselu, Depoitre, Niasse, Wilson, Ayew... I've had them all in 17/18, haha. Last year I had Austin right before getting injured, Origi, Iheanacho and so many others who simply didn't bring in points at the time. It's fair to say I've been unlucky with the third strikers.

Milik is so much more than a bargain. He gets himself into goal scoring position with such ease, his left foot is simply magical.
Many in Poland say that pound for pound he is more talented than Lewandowski, and even Dennis Begrkamp said that he is veryspecial.

The only problem with young Arkadiusz is that he is quite injury prone, but should he stay fit we all might be looking at the next europeen top striker.

Pretty solid team with a few holes - watch the potential for Neuer to be Germany's no1 again by the actual tournament and Dzagoev isn't Russia's main man any more and even when he was he was never a great fantasy asset. Also I prefer Paulinho as a cheaper and arguably better option in Brazil's midfield - 7 goals in qualifying including a hattrick.

Yeh, keeping an eye on Neuer's return. Looks like Russia and Egypt have a double in GW1 so that's the reasoning behind Dzagoev. Didn't consider Paulinho but could be a good shout. Think the freindlies before will be massively helpful. Cheers for the feedback

If you're under 18 or not from the UK it won't come up because of gambling regulations I think but if not then Alan Davey who runs it has been around or just email them to try and sort it out

No - despite no official announcement thus far it’s still assumed there will be one released soon

I even e-mailed fifa to ask them this but not heard from them (tho if anything like uefa who still haven't replied 2yrs later) I v much hope so as I'm hoping to run a mini league n my players understand that format from UCL this year

Yeah, I've put feelers out and been told to stay patient and that it's coming.

Takes time working out how much [if any] money they can make out of it ... they'll get there no doubt but only when they've squeezed it for maximum personal gain first.

I really hope FPL don't do early price reveals this year. Just rather wait and see everything at once. They ended up doing so many last year, it kind of took the anticipation out of it.

I think they did those price reveals because they were having issues with the new release.

      Doubt they’ll do it again.
